ELY RACE DAY OVERVIEW — SATURDAY, AUGUST 22, 2026

Elko County's Elko Raceway — known locally as ELY, Nevada's premier bush track destination in the high desert — hosts an eight-race mixed card on Saturday afternoon featuring a blend of Quarter Horse sprints, distance Thoroughbred routes, and the featured ELY Governor Stakes at 400 furlongs in Race 7. The card represents one of the more complete offerings you'll find at this level, with purses ranging from $5,000 in the maiden sprint openers up to $17,400 for the stakes finale at Race 7. The card draws from a regional pool of Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred horsemen operating out of Nevada, Utah, and the surrounding states, with several barn names appearing multiple times across the card.

Trainer Sergio Canales and trainer Mark Jensen each saddle multiple runners across the afternoon, as does trainer Chris R. Mitchell and the dual-entry Dominguez barn in Race 6. Jockey Jayden R. Ironeyes figures to be one of the busiest riders on the afternoon, drawing mounts in nearly every race. Jockey Brayan Juarez similarly carries a heavy book and should factor in multiple outcomes.

The card structure is notable for its short-distance Quarter Horse races — 250f, 300f, and 400f sprints — alongside longer distance routes measured in 1100f, 1210f, 1540f, and 1830f, the latter being the closing Thoroughbred affair in Race 8. Race 7, the ELY Governor Stakes, is the highlight at $17,400 all-sources purse with six entered.

WEATHER AND TRACK CONDITIONS

Elko, Nevada in late August sits at approximately 5,100 feet elevation and typically experiences warm, dry afternoons with afternoon temperatures in the mid-80s Fahrenheit. Late-season monsoon moisture occasionally pushes into the Great Basin from the south, bringing isolated afternoon thunderstorms, but the region's low humidity generally keeps precipitation brief and track drying quick. For August 22, 2026, forecasts point to partly sunny skies with afternoon highs near 85 degrees, low humidity around 20 percent, and light southwest winds of 5 to 10 mph. No significant precipitation is anticipated, and the track surface is expected to be rated fast throughout the afternoon.

The Elko dirt surface tends to play consistently at this time of year with dry, packed conditions that reward horses who break cleanly and establish early position. The quarter-mile and shorter sprints will be run over a chute or straightaway configuration typical of bush-circuit Quarter Horse racing, where gate speed and reaction time are paramount. The longer Thoroughbred routes will favor horses with tactical efficiency and the ability to rate behind the early pace.

TRACK BIAS AND POST POSITION ANALYSIS

At a track of Elko's configuration, the shortest races — 250f, 300f, and 400f — are essentially decided at the break. There is virtually no rail bias or post advantage in a straight sprint; pure gate speed and stride efficiency over the short run are everything. In these races, horses who have posted the fastest gate-to-wire fractions in their most recent outings hold a natural structural advantage. Post position bias is essentially neutral in the sprints.

In the route races — the 1100f in Race 2, the 1210f in Race 4, the 1540f in Race 6, and the 1830f in Race 8 — early positioning out of the gate can matter more depending on the curvature of the track. Lower posts (Posts 1 through 3) in the routes typically see horses able to secure the rail quickly, which at smaller regional tracks is often a meaningful advantage. Horses drawing outside posts in the longer routes who are natural speed types may need to expend additional early energy to establish position, which can compromise late efficiency. Horses with tactical versatility that can relax in mid-pack from an outside post tend to have better outcomes in the routes at this level.

RACE 1 — Post 4:00 — 300f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | AON | Purse $5,000

Seven maiden Quarter Horses go short in the opening sprint over 300 feet — the straightaway dead sprint format that is entirely gate-dependent. This is about raw speed off the break, no more.

Pace Analysis

At 300 furlongs, there is no traditional pace scenario. Every horse breaks and runs as hard as possible to the wire. The horse that breaks cleanest and maintains stride efficiency to the finish line wins. Speed figures from recent 300f or similar distance outings are the primary handicapping tool. Any horse with gate-breaking struggles is eliminated immediately.

Key Contenders

Mr Clapback (POST 3), trained by Sergio Canales and ridden by Brayan Juarez, draws the morning line favoritism at 2-1 and deserves respect as the top choice. Canales is one of the more active conditioners on the card and clearly has confidence in this runner at the short price. Juarez is a capable rider who will be tested throughout the afternoon. The 2-1 morning line in a seven-horse maiden sprint at this level is a meaningful public endorsement.

Ibz Buenrostro (POST 5), trained by Ignacio Buenrostro and ridden by Devon Ellis, is the second choice at 3-1 on the morning line. A trainer-owned entry often carries extra motivation, and Buenrostro saddling his own horse is a small but positive angle. Ellis is a reliable rider at this circuit and should produce a clean break.

Secondary Choices

Sagrado (POST 2), trained by Jesus Nolazco and piloted by Carlos Castruita, shares the 4-1 morning line with FAME S. Nolazco runs multiple horses on today's card, indicating an active stable in good order. Castruita gets the call here, and Post 2 in a straight sprint is about as neutral as it gets. SAGRADO is worth watching as a legitimate secondary play.

Fame S (POST 6), also trained by Sergio Canales and ridden by Jayden R. Ironeyes, represents the barn's second entry in this race alongside Mr Clapback (POST 3). When a trainer enters two horses in the same short sprint, neither should be overlooked — the stable is clearly confident in both runners. FAME S draws Post 6 and, at 4-1, offers slightly better value than the barn's top choice.

Longshots

Five Bar Bar (POST 4), trained by Abelardo Gonzalez and ridden by Julian Zavala, opens at 5-1 and is not without a puncher's chance. In a gate-speed race, any horse capable of breaking fast can win. Gonzalez has horses entered across the card and is clearly an active participant at this meeting.

Ur Papas Dream (POST 7), trained by Randy Maldonado and ridden by Jose Elias Rodriguez, draws the outside post at 8-1. The wide post at 300 feet is not an automatic disqualifier since it is a straight sprint, but UR PAPAS DREAM would need an exceptional break to compete with the morning line favorites.

Ap Classic Virus (POST 1), trained by Juan Manuel Hernandez and ridden by Oscar Cervantes, opens at 12-1 and is the longest shot in the field. The inside post is no particular advantage in a straight sprint, and the 12-1 price suggests limited recent form. Difficult to recommend in a win-only context, but horses like this can show briefly in exotics.

Selections

Win: Mr Clapback (POST 3) Place: Ibz Buenrostro (POST 5) Show: Sagrado (POST 2)

Wagering Strategy: In a seven-horse maiden sprint at 300 feet, exotic wagering is the primary vehicle. Box Mr Clapback (POST 3), Ibz Buenrostro (POST 5), and Fame S (POST 6) in the exacta at a minimum. If budget allows, include Sagrado (POST 2) in the exacta as a fourth wheel. Trifecta key Mr Clapback (POST 3) on top with Ibz Buenrostro (POST 5), Fame S (POST 6), and Sagrado (POST 2) filling the second and third slots.

RACE 2 — Post 4:25 — 1100f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | BUN | Purse $6,000

Five maiden runners stretch to 1100 feet in the second race, the most competitive maiden route on the early card. Five horses, a clean field, and a route distance that separates pure speed types from those with tactical range.

Pace Analysis

With five runners in a route maiden, the pace will likely be moderate early as horses sort out position. Swiningdwntheln (POST 2) and Layneesdovecandy (POST 5) both draw 2-1 morning lines, suggesting the public expects a two-horse battle. The question is whether the pace develops hotly or slowly — in a small field at this distance, moderate fractions typically favor the horse with the best late kick. Front-end speed that can regulate its own pace from the rail is also dangerous.

Key Contenders

Swiningdwntheln (POST 2), trained by Mike Scudder and ridden by Jayden R. Ironeyes, is co-favored at 2-1. Scudder saddles runners throughout today's card and appears to be a prominent figure at this meeting. Ironeyes gets the mount and is among the busiest riders on the afternoon. In a five-horse field at 1100 feet, the inside posts carry a real advantage, and Post 2 is an excellent draw. Scudder's confidence in this entry is reflected in the low morning line.

Layneesdovecandy (POST 5), trained by Mark Jensen and ridden by R. Morris, co-headlines at 2-1 from the outside post. Jensen also conditions JUST N JACK in Race 4 and AUX ARCS in Race 4, suggesting an active operation. The outside post at 1100 feet is a slight tactical disadvantage in terms of securing the rail, but a 2-1 morning line means the handicappers at Elko see genuine ability here. Morris is a capable handler of route types.

Secondary Choices

Midnight Zee (POST 3), trained by Edgar Osvaldo Moreno-Alcala and ridden by Jairo Moreno, is the third choice at 3-1. Moreno-Alcala is the trainer-jockey connection in a sense, with a shared surname suggesting a family operation. Post 3 in a five-horse route is comfortable and keeps this runner in a position to track the early pace without burning energy.

Dream Big (POST 4), trained by Kelly Jensen and ridden by Brayan Juarez, opens at 4-1. Juarez is a capable rider who draws a full book today, which speaks to the track's confidence in his abilities. DREAM BIG sits in the middle of the pack in terms of morning line price and post position, making this runner an interesting secondary option in exotics.

Longshots

Vie (POST 1), trained by Mac L. Hansen and ridden by Oscar Cervantes, opens at 4-1. The rail post in a route is not a bad draw at all, and the 4-1 price may represent mild public underestimation. Hansen is not as prominently represented on the card as other trainers, but a fresh horse on the rail in a small field can always steal a pace-pressured sprint route.

Selections

Win: Swiningdwntheln (POST 2) Place: Layneesdovecandy (POST 5) Show: Midnight Zee (POST 3)

Wagering Strategy: With a co-favorite structure, exactas are the primary play. Wheel Swiningdwntheln (POST 2) over the field in the exacta, and also construct a reverse exacta with Layneesdovecandy (POST 5) on top over Swiningdwntheln (POST 2). The trifecta box of Swiningdwntheln (POST 2), Layneesdovecandy (POST 5), and Midnight Zee (POST 3) is the recommended structure. Vie (POST 1) merits a small inclusion in the trifecta as a potential rail-skimmer at a price.

RACE 3 — Post 4:50 — 250f | D | A | Alw 5000n1y | BUN | Purse $5,000

Seven horses go 250 feet in an allowance sprint for non-winners of one year. The 250-foot distance is the shortest on the card and the most purely gate-dependent event of the afternoon. These are all horses that have presumably broken their maiden and are attempting to prove themselves at the allowance level.

Pace Analysis

At 250 feet, this race is decided in approximately 13 to 14 seconds from gate to wire. There is no pace scenario in the traditional sense. The horse that breaks cleanest and covers the short ground with the best stride pattern wins. Any history of gate issues is disqualifying. Post position has no meaningful bearing on the outcome at this distance.

Key Contenders

Rtm My Turn (POST 5), trained by Mark Hanson and ridden by Jose Elias Rodriguez, is the morning line favorite at 2-1. A 2-1 price in a seven-horse allowance sprint at 250 feet is a strong public statement. Hanson also saddles SWEET RACY EAGLE in the Race 5 stakes and WESTON in Race 4, suggesting a stable in good form. Rodriguez gets the mount here and rides throughout the card.

Jess Be Genuine (POST 7), trained by Edgar Osvaldo Moreno-Alcala and ridden by Luis Fernando Zapien Jr., is the second choice at 3-1 despite drawing the widest post. In a straight sprint, the outside post is not a disadvantage per se — every horse runs its own lane. Moreno-Alcala fires a runner here after also entering MIDNIGHT ZEE in Race 2, and the trainer appears to have horses ready to perform. Zapien Jr. is a capable rider at this circuit.

Secondary Choices

Magic King Corona (POST 2), trained by Humberto Lira Ramirez and ridden by Julian Zavala, opens at 4-1. Ramirez also trains Triple D Governor (POST 1) in the Race 7 stakes, and an active trainer at this level frequently cycles horses into condition simultaneously. Zavala is a regular rider here and handles the mount competently.

La Punsada (POST 3), trained by Jesus Nolazco and ridden by Luis A. Collazo, also opens at 4-1. Nolazco runs multiple horses on the card and clearly has an active string. LA PUNSADA draws Post 3, which is a comfortable central position in the straightaway configuration. Collazo gets the call here.

Longshots

Rp Pretty Woman (POST 1), trained by Sergio Canales and ridden by Brayan Juarez, opens at 5-1. Canales is one of the more prominent trainers on the card today and putting Juarez up here is a sign of genuine intent. In a 250-foot sprint, the inside post is as good as any.

El Serafin (POST 6), trained by Jesus Nolazco and ridden by Carlos Castruita, is Nolazco's second entry in this race alongside La Punsada (POST 3). EL SERAFIN opens at 8-1 and represents fair value if the trainer's stable is in sharp form. In exotics, dual-trainer entries in sprint events always merit inclusion.

Dovers First Diva (POST 4), trained by Steven Flores and ridden by Jayden R. Ironeyes, opens at 12-1 as the longest shot in the field. At this price, it is difficult to construct a case for a win bet, but Ironeyes is capable of producing clean breaks and DOVERS FIRST DIVA is not without a token trifecta inclusion.

Selections

Win: Rtm My Turn (POST 5) Place: Jess Be Genuine (POST 7) Show: Magic King Corona (POST 2)

Wagering Strategy: Key Rtm My Turn (POST 5) on top in exactas with Jess Be Genuine (POST 7) and Magic King Corona (POST 2). Trifecta structure: Rtm My Turn (POST 5) over Jess Be Genuine (POST 7) and Magic King Corona (POST 2) with Rp Pretty Woman (POST 1) and La Punsada (POST 3) filling the third slot. At 250 feet, spreads are cheap — use them.

RACE 4 — Post 5:15 — 1210f | D | A | Alw 6000n1y | BUN | Purse $6,000

Eight horses go 1210 feet in the strongest allowance route on the card. With a $6,000 purse and eight entrants, this is a full field that will test trainers who have horses fit and ready at this distance.

Pace Analysis

Eight horses in a 1210-foot route creates a genuine pace question. Weston (POST 5) at 2-1 is the clear public choice and likely a pace-setter or pace-presser from the middle post. The question is whether Lawless World (POST 2), Thunder Ball (POST 7), or Just N Jack (POST 1) can match WESTON's early fractions and set up a contested early pace, which would benefit closers like Red Garnet (POST 8) or Hunter Quick (POST 6). A slow, uncontested pace favors WESTON running away on the front end.

Key Contenders

Weston (POST 5), trained by Mark Hanson and ridden by Jose Elias Rodriguez, is the clear favorite at 2-1 and deserves the top billing. Hanson is one of the more active trainers on the card today, and WESTON at 2-1 reflects strong stable confidence. Post 5 in an eight-horse route allows Rodriguez to pick his spot early and settle into a tactical position. If WESTON controls the pace, this is the one to beat.

Lawless World (POST 2), trained by Chris R. Mitchell and ridden by F.M. Gamez, opens at 4-1 from a favorable inside post. Mitchell conditions multiple runners across the card today, including ADIOS MUCHACHAS in Race 6, SOUTH COAST ROUTE and HERECOMEGEORGIEBOY in Race 8, and BLOW UR WHISTLE in Race 5 — suggesting a barn that is firing on multiple cylinders. An inside post in a route at a smaller track is a genuine advantage, and LAWLESS WORLD at 4-1 is well worth a look.

Secondary Choices

Thunder Ball (POST 7), trained by Jackie Smith and ridden by Devon Ellis, opens at 4-1 and shares the secondary price bracket with Lawless World (POST 2). Smith also trains BERNALINHO in Race 8, and the trainer appears active at this meeting. From the outside portion of the draw, THUNDER BALL needs a clean break and a moderate early pace to make a forward move. Ellis is steady and capable.

Red Garnet (POST 8), trained by Chris R. Mitchell and ridden by R. Morris, opens at 6-1 and is the second Mitchell runner in this race alongside Lawless World (POST 2). A trainer double entry always carries tactical implications — one horse may play pace for the other, though at this level it is rarely coordinated. RED GARNET from the far outside at 6-1 in a route is the type of horse that can benefit from an honest early pace.

Longshots

Just N Jack (POST 1), trained by Mark Jensen and ridden by Brayan Juarez, opens at 5-1. Jensen saddles two in this race alongside Aux Arcs (POST 3), which is a bold stable double entry. JUST N JACK on the rail with Juarez up is not without merit in a route. The inside post with an active trainer behind it is always dangerous at this level.

Aux Arcs (POST 3), Jensen's second entry, is ridden by Jayden R. Ironeyes and opens at 8-1. With two in the race, Jensen clearly has confidence in both. AUX ARCS at 8-1 is the longer of the two Jensen runners and may represent value if the stable's shorter-priced runner draws early attention.

Kloe's Ladybug (POST 4), trained by Robert McCracken and ridden by Oscar Cervantes, opens at 12-1 and is likely facing a step up in company or returning from layoff. At the price, only viable in large trifecta/superfecta spreads.

Hunter Quick (POST 6), trained by Kyndra D. McKinney and ridden by Daniel Aguilar, opens at 10-1. McKinney also has runners in Race 6 and Race 8, suggesting an active string. HUNTER QUICK at 10-1 is a fringe longshot for trifecta inclusion only.

Selections

Win: Weston (POST 5) Place: Lawless World (POST 2) Show: Thunder Ball (POST 7)

Wagering Strategy: Weston (POST 5) appears to be the class of the field, but the 2-1 price limits straight win value. Target the exacta, wheeling Weston (POST 5) over Lawless World (POST 2), Thunder Ball (POST 7), and Red Garnet (POST 8). A trifecta key of Weston (POST 5) over those same runners with Aux Arcs (POST 3) and Just N Jack (POST 1) as secondary fill is the recommended approach. The Mitchell double entry of Lawless World (POST 2) and Red Garnet (POST 8) in the exotics is a logical pairing.

RACE 5 — Post 5:40 — 300f | D | N | Stk 8k | BUM | Purse $8,400

The first stakes race of the afternoon features seven fillies and mares going 300 feet with an $8,400 purse. This is a non-winners condition stakes, and the competition is a step above the earlier maiden and allowance sprints.

Pace Analysis

At 300 feet, the race is gate speed and nothing else. Sweet Racy Eagle (POST 3) at 2-1 and Hw Tellum Sweetly (POST 6) at 3-1 headline the field. The outside spread of speed in a short sprint with wide posts on both favorites creates an interesting dynamic at the gate, where all seven horses will fire simultaneously from adjacent posts.

Key Contenders

Sweet Racy Eagle (POST 3), trained by Mark Hanson and ridden by Jose Elias Rodriguez, is the morning line favorite at 2-1. Hanson is having a strong afternoon with multiple live runners across the card. SWEET RACY EAGLE from Post 3 in the middle of the field is well-positioned for a clean break. Rodriguez has been consistent throughout the afternoon and this is Hanson's stakes runner, suggesting peak readiness.

Hw Tellum Sweetly (POST 6), trained by Pedro Urias Soto and ridden by Oscar Cervantes, is the second choice at 3-1 from Post 6. Cervantes gets the mount here and has been active all afternoon. In a 300-foot straight sprint, Post 6 creates no disadvantage. The 3-1 morning line suggests genuine ability, and Urias Soto's stable confidence is evident in the price.

Secondary Choices

Feisty Jo (POST 4), trained by Gilberto Canales and ridden by Jayden R. Ironeyes, opens at 4-1. This represents one of the Canales family's stakes entries, and Ironeyes in a sprint stakes is dangerous. Center post, capable rider, and active barn — FEISTY JO is a legitimate play.

Blow Ur Whistle (POST 7), trained by Chris R. Mitchell and ridden by R. Morris, opens at 4-1 from the far outside. Mitchell has runners throughout the card and clearly has horses ready to run. The outside post at 300 feet is neutral in a straight sprint, and at 4-1, BLOW UR WHISTLE has win value.

Longshots

Go My First Doll (POST 2), trained by Cresencio Ortiz and ridden by Carlos Castruita, opens at 5-1. A mid-range longshot in the stakes field, GO MY FIRST DOLL at 5-1 is included in trifecta spreads but is not a primary target.

Shiza A Turbo (POST 5), trained by Juan Antonio Ruiz and ridden by Julian Zavala, opens at 8-1 and is the second-longest price in the field. Zavala fires mounts across the card, and at 8-1 in a short stakes sprint, SHIZA A TURBO merits a small exacta and trifecta inclusion.

Hunny Moon (POST 1), trained by Juan Manuel Hernandez and ridden by Brayan Juarez, opens at 12-1 and is the longest shot in this field. The inside post and Juarez riding means this runner will have every chance to break clean. Still, at 12-1 in a seven-horse stakes sprint, HUNNY MOON is primarily a trifecta longshot play.

Selections

Win: Sweet Racy Eagle (POST 3) Place: Hw Tellum Sweetly (POST 6) Show: Feisty Jo (POST 4)

Wagering Strategy: In the stakes sprint, use Sweet Racy Eagle (POST 3) and Hw Tellum Sweetly (POST 6) in an exacta box. Add Feisty Jo (POST 4) and Blow Ur Whistle (POST 7) to form a four-horse exacta box for maximum coverage. Trifecta key: Sweet Racy Eagle (POST 3) on top over Hw Tellum Sweetly (POST 6) and Feisty Jo (POST 4) with Blow Ur Whistle (POST 7) and Go My First Doll (POST 2) in the third slot.

RACE 6 — Post 6:05 — 1540f | D | N | FlliesMare9k | BUM | Purse $9,000

Five fillies and mares go the longest distance so far in what is essentially the co-feature of the card before the stakes. A $9,000 purse for non-winners of a specified conditions attracts a tight field that should produce solid form lines.

Pace Analysis

Adios Muchachas (POST 1) and Seeking Quality (POST 3) both open at 2-1, creating a co-favorite scenario in a five-horse field. The pace question centers on whether these two will press each other early over 1540 feet, which would benefit Skyexpress (POST 4) at 3-1 sitting just behind them. If the early pace is honest, the closers in this race have a real opportunity. If ADIOS MUCHACHAS controls the pace uncontested from the rail, it will be very difficult to beat her.

Key Contenders

Adios Muchachas (POST 1), trained by Chris R. Mitchell and ridden by R. Morris, is co-favored at 2-1 from the inside rail. Mitchell's barn is firing all afternoon, and ADIOS MUCHACHAS on the rail at 2-1 is the race's structural favorite. The rail post in a five-horse route is a significant advantage, and Morris has been a consistent presence in the Mitchell barn's rotation throughout the card.

Seeking Quality (POST 3), trained by Mike Scudder and ridden by Jayden R. Ironeyes, co-headlines at 2-1 from Post 3. Scudder also trains SWININGDWNTHELN in Race 2, and the trainer's horses appear ready across two different distances today. Ironeyes has been busy and productive all afternoon. In a five-horse field, Post 3 is comfortable, and SEEKING QUALITY will have options to track the pace or make a forward move.

Secondary Choices

Skyexpress (POST 4), trained by Joseph M. Dominguez and ridden by J.R. Valenzuela, opens at 3-1. Dominguez runs two horses in this race — SKYEXPRESS and Forever N Love (POST 5) — which is a significant statement about the barn's form. SKYEXPRESS at 3-1 is the higher-priced of the two and may serve as the tactical runner. Valenzuela is capable of placing a horse in position on the far turn over a route distance.

Forever N Love (POST 5), trained by Joseph M. Dominguez and ridden by Jose Elias Rodriguez, opens at 4-1 as the second Dominguez runner. Two Dominguez horses in a five-horse field means the barn controls 40 percent of the entries — a substantial tactical advantage. At 4-1, FOREVER N LOVE represents value if the trainer's form carries over.

Longshots

Clay's Ruby Love (POST 2), trained by Kyndra D. McKinney and ridden by Daniel Aguilar, opens at 4-1. McKinney also has runners in Race 4 and Race 8, and the active trainer is clearly running multiple strings in condition. CLAY'S RUBY LOVE at 4-1 from Post 2 is not expensive to include in exotics, and in a five-horse fillies and mares route, every horse has a genuine mathematical chance.

Selections

Win: Adios Muchachas (POST 1) Place: Seeking Quality (POST 3) Show: Skyexpress (POST 4)

Wagering Strategy: With co-favorites and a small field, straight exacta play is the most efficient use of capital. Adios Muchachas (POST 1) over Seeking Quality (POST 3) is the primary exacta play. Also invest in the reverse: Seeking Quality (POST 3) over Adios Muchachas (POST 1). The Dominguez double — Skyexpress (POST 4) and Forever N Love (POST 5) — belongs in all trifectas, and Clay's Ruby Love (POST 2) at 4-1 can round out any trifecta or superfecta construction.

RACE 7 — Post 6:30 — 400f | D | N | ELYGovernS17k | BUN | Purse $17,400

The featured ELY Governor Stakes goes six runners at 400 feet with a $17,400 purse. This is the race of the afternoon and the primary betting event of the card. Two horses are co-favored at 2-1: The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) and Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5). Stakes racing at this level at Elko draws horses that have demonstrated competitive ability at the route and sprint levels, and the quality of competition is the highest on the card.

Pace Analysis

At 400 feet, this is still a gate-speed event, but slightly longer than the 250f and 300f sprints earlier. The extra distance does allow a tiny margin for a horse that breaks a fraction slow to recover — but the margin is razor thin. The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) and Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5) are clearly expected to be the class of the field. Post 3 and Post 5 bracket the center of the gate, both favorable positions in a straight sprint. The pace will be maximum from the gate to the wire.

Key Contenders

The Prize Ferarri (POST 3), trained by Mark Hanson and ridden by Jose Elias Rodriguez, is co-favored at 2-1 for the featured race. Hanson has been the dominant trainer on today's card with multiple runners performing at or near the top of their respective fields. THE PRIZE FERARRI drawing Post 3 with Rodriguez — who is riding a full card book — puts the top Hanson runner in the best possible position. Hanson's stakes confidence in this horse is evident, and Rodriguez will have had several races to develop his feel for the track before this featured event.

Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5), trained by Joe Hadley and ridden by Jayden R. Ironeyes, shares the 2-1 morning line and is equally dangerous. Hadley gets the top rider of the afternoon in Ironeyes, who at this point in the card will have accumulated significant experience on the track's surface and any quirks in the gate. At 400 feet, FIRE OF THE MOUNTAIN from Post 5 will run a clean lane.

Secondary Choices

Paint The City (POST 4), trained by Cesar Luna and ridden by J.R. Valenzuela, opens at 4-1 from the center post in the six-horse field. Luna is not among the more heavily represented trainers on today's card, but the 4-1 morning line in the featured stakes suggests this runner has documented ability. Valenzuela has been aboard SKYEXPRESS in Race 6 and will have track feel going into this stakes. Center post at 400 feet is ideal.

Katies Boy Joe (POST 6), trained by Mike Scudder and ridden by R. Morris, opens at 4-1. Scudder has had a productive card today, and KATIES BOY JOE from the outside post at 4-1 in the stakes is worth a look. In a straight sprint, the outside post carries no penalty, and at this price the value is acceptable.

Longshots

The Rev Rocker (POST 2), trained by Abelardo Gonzalez and ridden by Brayan Juarez, opens at 6-1. Gonzalez trains FIVE BAR BAR in Race 1 and returns with THE REV ROCKER in the featured race. Juarez has been active across the card, and 6-1 on the second post is an interesting long shot angle. In a six-horse straight sprint stakes, the price gap between 6-1 and 4-1 is enough to make THE REV ROCKER a worthwhile trifecta inclusion.

Triple D Governor (POST 1), trained by Humberto Lira Ramirez and ridden by Julian Zavala, opens at 8-1 from the inside post. Ramirez also trained Magic King Corona (POST 2) in Race 3. The inside post in a straight sprint at 400 feet is not an advantage or disadvantage — TRIPLE D GOVERNOR simply needs to break clean and run fast. At 8-1 in the featured stakes, this runner is a longshot but belongs in trifectas and superfectas.

Selections

Win: The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) Place: Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5) Show: Paint The City (POST 4)

Wagering Strategy: The ELY Governor Stakes is the primary exotic investment race of the card. Exacta box of The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) and Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5) is the foundation bet. Add Paint The City (POST 4) to form a three-horse exacta box covering six combinations. The trifecta key structure: The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) and Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5) on top, over Paint The City (POST 4) and Katies Boy Joe (POST 6) in the second slot, over The Rev Rocker (POST 2) and Triple D Governor (POST 1) in the third slot. A superfecta box of the top four — The Prize Ferarri (POST 3), Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5), Paint The City (POST 4), and Katies Boy Joe (POST 6) — is also recommended at a modest base unit.

RACE 8 — Post 6:55 — 1830f | D | N | Thrbred10k | BUN | Purse $10,400

The card closes with a seven-horse Thoroughbred route at 1830 feet and a $10,400 purse. This is the longest race on the card and the one most dependent on sustained pace analysis and class assessment. Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) is the 2-1 morning line favorite with Mother's Prayer (POST 6) at 3-1 as the second choice.

Pace Analysis

At 1830 feet — the longest route on the card — pace development becomes critical. The early fractions will set up the race, and horses that are sent too aggressively early in such a long route are vulnerable to determined closers. Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) as a Mitchell barn runner is likely a pace horse or close-presser. Mother's Prayer (POST 6) at 3-1 may represent a horse that runs best with cover. The presence of South Coast Route (POST 3) and Dixon Tuff (POST 7) adds additional pace complexity. If multiple horses contest the early fractions aggressively, the closing speed of My Crazy Neighbor (POST 4) or Bernalinho (POST 2) could be decisive.

Key Contenders

Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5), trained by Chris R. Mitchell and ridden by R. Morris, is the morning line favorite at 2-1. Mitchell's barn has been the most productive on today's card with runners in nearly every race, and HERECOMEGEORGIEBOY is the trainer's primary closing entry. Morris has been aboard multiple Mitchell runners throughout the afternoon and should have a clear read on the surface. Post 5 from the middle of a seven-horse Thoroughbred route is an excellent tactical draw.

Mother's Prayer (POST 6), trained by Ronald F. Carter and ridden by F.M. Gamez, opens at 3-1. Carter is not as frequently represented on today's card as Mitchell or Hanson, but a trainer who fires a runner in the closing route at 3-1 typically has that horse in solid condition. Gamez has been active on the card and gets the mount on what looks like a genuine second choice.

Secondary Choices

My Crazy Neighbor (POST 4), trained by Kyndra D. McKinney and ridden by Daniel Aguilar, opens at 4-1. McKinney has had runners throughout the afternoon in Races 4 and 6, and the closing route entry is a logical extension of an active stable. MY CRAZY NEIGHBOR from Post 4 is well-positioned to track the early pace and make a move in the final stretch of a long route.

Dixon Tuff (POST 7), trained by Mike Scudder and ridden by Jayden R. Ironeyes, opens at 4-1 from the outside post. Scudder has had a strong afternoon with SWININGDWNTHELN in Race 2 and SEEKING QUALITY in Race 6, and DIXON TUFF in the closing route gives the trainer a third shot at the winner's circle. Ironeyes, if he has ridden well throughout the card, will be fully warmed up and reading the surface correctly. The outside post at 1830 feet requires a tactical break and an early decision about position.

Longshots

Bernalinho (POST 2), trained by Jackie Smith and ridden by Devon Ellis, opens at 5-1. Smith also trains THUNDER BALL in Race 4, and the trainer has been steady throughout the card. BERNALINHO from Post 2 inside is a favorable draw in a route, and Ellis is a capable Thoroughbred rider. At 5-1, this is the most attractive longshot price in the closer.

South Coast Route (POST 3), trained by Chris R. Mitchell and ridden by Brayan Juarez, opens at 8-1 as the second Mitchell runner in this race alongside Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5). Mitchell enters two runners in the closing route, suggesting strong stable form. At 8-1, SOUTH COAST ROUTE represents the longer-priced Mitchell runner, and the barn double in a seven-horse route carries tactical implications.

Dontim (POST 1), trained by Lynn B. McNeely and ridden by Oscar Cervantes, opens at 12-1 as the longest shot on the morning line. In a long Thoroughbred route, the inside post is advantageous for positioning, but 12-1 reflects either poor recent form or a significant class question. DONTIM is a token superfecta inclusion only.

Selections

Win: Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) Place: Mother's Prayer (POST 6) Show: My Crazy Neighbor (POST 4)

Wagering Strategy: Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) is the card-closing win bet for the Mitchell barn. Exacta: Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) over Mother's Prayer (POST 6) is the primary play. Reverse that exacta as well. Trifecta key: Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) on top, Mother's Prayer (POST 6) and My Crazy Neighbor (POST 4) in the second slot, Dixon Tuff (POST 7) and Bernalinho (POST 2) filling the third. For value players, South Coast Route (POST 3) at 8-1 as the second Mitchell barn runner is worth a trifecta inclusion in case the barn has a pace-and-close setup at work.

JOCKEY NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Jayden R. Ironeyes leads the afternoon in terms of book volume, drawing mounts in Race 1 (FAME S, POST 6), Race 2 (SWININGDWNTHELN, POST 2), Race 3 (DOVERS FIRST DIVA, POST 4), Race 4 (AUX ARCS, POST 3), Race 5 (FEISTY JO, POST 4), Race 6 (SEEKING QUALITY, POST 3), Race 7 (FIRE OF THE MOUNTAIN, POST 5), and Race 8 (DIXON TUFF, POST 7). That is a full eight-race card. When a jockey draws this many mounts at a small regional meeting, it typically means the local trainers have significant confidence in his ability to manage the surface and deliver competitive efforts. His Race 7 mount, Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5), is one of two co-favorites in the featured stakes, and by the time that race goes off Ironeyes will have extensive on-track experience from the afternoon's earlier races.

Jose Elias Rodriguez carries a similarly heavy book, riding in Races 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, with his key rides including Rtm My Turn (POST 5) in Race 3, Weston (POST 5) in Race 4, Sweet Racy Eagle (POST 3) in Race 5, Forever N Love (POST 5) in Race 6, and The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) in Race 7. Rodriguez aboard the Hanson barn's featured stakes runner is the most compelling jockey angle on the card. When the top rider at a meeting finishes the afternoon on the favorite in the stakes race, pay attention.

Brayan Juarez draws mounts throughout, including the morning line favorite Mr Clapback (POST 3) in Race 1, Dream Big (POST 4) in Race 2, Rp Pretty Woman (POST 1) in Race 3, Just N Jack (POST 1) in Race 4, Hunny Moon (POST 1) in Race 5, and The Rev Rocker (POST 2) in Race 7. Juarez is the primary rider for multiple stable connections and figures to have one or two winning afternoons among his heavy book.

Oscar Cervantes rides for multiple trainers, drawing Vie (POST 1) in Race 2, Kloe's Ladybug (POST 4) in Race 4, Hw Tellum Sweetly (POST 6) in Race 5, Dontim (POST 1) in Race 8, and Ap Classic Virus (POST 1) in Race 1. His most notable mount is Hw Tellum Sweetly (POST 6) in the Race 5 stakes at 3-1.

R. Morris handles the Mitchell barn's primary mounts for much of the card, including Layneesdovecandy (POST 5) in Race 2, Red Garnet (POST 8) in Race 4, Blow Ur Whistle (POST 7) in Race 5, Adios Muchachas (POST 1) in Race 6, Katies Boy Joe (POST 6) in Race 7, and Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) in Race 8. Morris is effectively the stable jockey for the Mitchell and Scudder operations on this card.

Devon Ellis draws mounts for multiple trainers including Ibz Buenrostro (POST 5) in Race 1, Thunder Ball (POST 7) in Race 4, and Bernalinho (POST 2) in Race 8. The Race 1 mount at 3-1 is Ellis's best win shot.

TRAINER NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Chris R. Mitchell is the single busiest trainer on the ELY card, entering runners in Races 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 — five of the eight races. His entries include Lawless World (POST 2) and Red Garnet (POST 8) in Race 4, Blow Ur Whistle (POST 7) in Race 5, Adios Muchachas (POST 1) in Race 6, Katies Boy Joe (POST 6) in Race 7, and South Coast Route (POST 3) and Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) in Race 8. A trainer who enters multiple horses across five of eight races at a meet is clearly in strong stable form. Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) at 2-1 in the closing route and Adios Muchachas (POST 1) at 2-1 in Race 6 are the barn's prime win candidates.

Mark Hanson, spelled slightly differently from trainer Mark Jensen, appears to be a separate conditioner who trains Rtm My Turn (POST 5) in Race 3, Weston (POST 5) in Race 4, Sweet Racy Eagle (POST 3) in Race 5, and The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) in Race 7. The co-favorite in the featured stakes is Hanson's marquee entry of the day, and given that the stable has legitimate morning line favorites in three of its four races, this barn is clearly in excellent form.

Mark Jensen saddles Layneesdovecandy (POST 5) in Race 2, Just N Jack (POST 1) in Race 4, and Aux Arcs (POST 3) in Race 4. The double entry in Race 4 reflects Jensen's confidence that both runners are ready to compete, though it also means the stable's resources are split.

Sergio Canales runs Mr Clapback (POST 3) and Fame S (POST 6) in Race 1 and Rp Pretty Woman (POST 1) in Race 3. With the morning line favorite in Race 1, Canales has his best chance early on the card.

Jesus Nolazco saddles Sagrado (POST 2) in Race 1, La Punsada (POST 3) in Race 3, and El Serafin (POST 6) in Race 3. The dual entry in Race 3 follows a pattern of active trainers sending multiple runners at short sprints.

Mike Scudder trains Swiningdwntheln (POST 2) in Race 2, Seeking Quality (POST 3) in Race 6, Katies Boy Joe (POST 6) in Race 7, and Dixon Tuff (POST 7) in Race 8. Scudder has runners at multiple distances across the card, and his Race 2 co-favorite is the most likely win candidate.

Edgar Osvaldo Moreno-Alcala trains Midnight Zee (POST 3) in Race 2 and Jess Be Genuine (POST 7) in Race 3. An active trainer with entries at different distances always merits attention.

Kyndra D. McKinney enters Hunter Quick (POST 6) in Race 4, Clay's Ruby Love (POST 2) in Race 6, and My Crazy Neighbor (POST 4) in Race 8. The Race 8 entry at 4-1 is the barn's best win opportunity.

Joseph M. Dominguez saddles both Skyexpress (POST 4) and Forever N Love (POST 5) in Race 6, the five-horse fillies and mares route. With two of five runners, Dominguez controls the race tactically.

Jackie Smith trains Thunder Ball (POST 7) in Race 4 and Bernalinho (POST 2) in Race 8.

BEST WAGERING STRATEGIES AND VALUE PLAYS

The ELY card on August 22 presents a mix of gate-speed Quarter Horse sprints and longer Thoroughbred routes, which creates a natural division in wagering approach. The strategy below addresses each segment.

For the Sprint Exotics (Races 1, 3, 5, and 7), gate speed and break efficiency are everything. The recommended approach is to invest the majority of exotic dollars in exacta boxes and trifecta keys rather than win bets. At 300 feet and 250 feet, slight odds variations between horses make the exacta box the primary play. In Race 1, an exacta box of Mr Clapback (POST 3), Ibz Buenrostro (POST 5), and Fame S (POST 6) at $2 covers six combinations for $12. In Race 3, box Rtm My Turn (POST 5), Jess Be Genuine (POST 7), and Magic King Corona (POST 2).

The Race 5 stakes sprint at $8,400 is best approached with an exacta box of Sweet Racy Eagle (POST 3) and Hw Tellum Sweetly (POST 6) as the foundation, then layering Feisty Jo (POST 4) and Blow Ur Whistle (POST 7) into trifecta positions. The two horses at 4-1 each have enough class at this level to finish ahead of the second favorite on any given break.

The Race 7 ELY Governor Stakes is the card's marquee betting event. At $17,400 all-sources, this race will generate the card's most significant exotic pools. A superfecta box of The Prize Ferarri (POST 3), Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5), Paint The City (POST 4), and Katies Boy Joe (POST 6) at $1 covers 24 combinations for $24 and represents solid value given the stakes nature of the race. The trifecta key structure described above — with The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) and Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5) at the top — is the most efficient investment.

For the Route Exotics (Races 2, 4, 6, and 8), the longer distances allow for more tactical variation and create better value in exacta and trifecta structures. In Race 6, the five-horse co-favorite setup means the exacta reverse between Adios Muchachas (POST 1) and Seeking Quality (POST 3) is the primary play at a modest cost. Adding the Dominguez double — Skyexpress (POST 4) and Forever N Love (POST 5) — in the trifecta is essentially a free roll at the price.

In Race 8, the Mitchell double entry of Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) and South Coast Route (POST 3) in the closing Thoroughbred route is the most intriguing barn angle on the card. If Mitchell is setting up a pace-and-close scenario with South Coast Route (POST 3) drawing the attention early while Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) closes, any trifecta structure that includes both is potentially profitable.

A late Pick 3 targeting Races 6, 7, and 8 — the final three races of the card — is the recommended multi-race structure. The core ticket uses Adios Muchachas (POST 1) and Seeking Quality (POST 3) in Race 6, The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) and Fire Of The Mountain (POST 5) in Race 7, and Herecomegeorgieboy (POST 5) and Mother's Prayer (POST 6) in Race 8. That is a 2 x 2 x 2 structure covering eight combinations at $2 each for a $16 base ticket. A secondary ticket that expands Race 6 to include Skyexpress (POST 4) and widens Race 8 to include My Crazy Neighbor (POST 4) and Dixon Tuff (POST 7) creates broader coverage for a modest additional investment.

The single best value play on the card is The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) in Race 7 at 2-1. Hanson's barn has been dominant across the afternoon, Rodriguez will be fully warmed up on the surface by the time this race goes off, and the center post in a straight stakes sprint is the best possible draw. If The Prize Ferarri (POST 3) breaks clean, this is likely the most confident win bet on the ELY card.
