EMERALD DOWNS RACE DAY OVERVIEW — MONDAY, MAY 25, 2026

Memorial Day brings an eight-race card to Emerald Downs in Auburn, Washington, with the first post set for 4:50 PM Pacific. The card spans a range of conditions from maiden $10,000 claimers to a $26,000 allowance, with purses ranging from $10,000 to $26,000. The eight-race program is a solid holiday offering for Pacific Northwest horseplayers, with plenty of wagering interest across the card.

Jorge Rosales is the most active trainer on the card, saddling horses in five of the eight races. Karlo Lopez is among the busier jockeys with mounts in seven races, as is Alex Cruz, Blake Nunnally, and Kevin Krigger, who figures to be among the leading riders on the afternoon. The $26,000 allowance in Race 3 is the class race of the card, while Race 7's $25,000 claiming event at a mile and a sixteenth will attract the most serious wagering action.

The Memorial Day holiday traditionally brings stronger-than-usual handle to Emerald Downs, with families and casual bettors mixing with the regulars. Expect live action in the exotics, particularly the Pick 4 and Pick 5 sequences.

WEATHER AND TRACK CONDITIONS

Auburn and the South King County region is forecast to see partly cloudy skies on May 25, 2026, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 50s at post time for the first race and dropping to the low 50s by the final race. There is a chance of light shower activity, particularly in the afternoon hours leading into the early races, which could impact the surface going into the card.

Emerald Downs' one-mile dirt oval tends to play on the wet to muddy side during the Pacific Northwest spring season. With any overnight or early-day moisture, expect a sloppy or muddy surface that could favor horses with proven wet-track form. If showers clear by the afternoon, a drying fast track that plays with speed-favoring characteristics is possible by the later races. Track maintenance crews at Emerald Downs typically work to maintain a consistent surface on holiday cards, but spring weather in western Washington is notoriously variable.

TRACK BIAS AND POST POSITION ANALYSIS

Emerald Downs is a one-mile oval with a relatively short stretch run of approximately 945 feet from the final turn to the wire. The track has historically demonstrated a pronounced speed bias, particularly at sprint distances, where horses that can establish position early and secure a stalking spot near the lead have a significant advantage.

On fast or good tracks, inside posts at six furlongs and seven and a half furlongs (1210f and 1320f) tend to be neutral to slightly favorable, as horses can save ground. However, in wet conditions, the inside path can be problematic if the track cups or becomes deep along the rail, which is common at Emerald Downs during the spring meet. In those scenarios, horses with outside draws or those that can work into a three-wide or four-wide path often find cleaner footing.

For route races, the one and three-quarter-furlong run to the first turn from the gate at nine furlongs (1430f) can be contentious for outside posts, as horses from posts five and beyond must work hard to secure position before the first bend.

At 1210 furlongs, which is the distance for the majority of today's races, the bias historically favors horses that break alertly and can either lead or stalk within two lengths of the front. Closers are at a disadvantage unless pace collapses completely. Watch posts two through five as the optimal slots in sprint races today. Outside posts at 1210 furlongs, particularly posts seven, eight, and nine, carry a meaningful pace disadvantage unless those horses are able to angle in quickly.

RACE 1 — Post 4:50 PM — 1210f | D | M | Md 10000 | BOF | Purse $10,000

This is a maiden $10,000 claiming sprint for fillies and mares, run at seven and a half furlongs on the main dirt track. At the bottom of the claiming ladder, these horses come with significant question marks, and the morning line reflects a fairly competitive field with Tricky Highway (POST 2) installed as the 2-1 favorite.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

With seven runners, this race has multiple potential pace-setters. Tricky Highway (POST 2) from the inside draws suggests she can get to the front or close to it early. Con Leche (POST 1) on the rail will need to break alertly to avoid traffic. Smoothie Ryder (POST 5) and Polaris Dawn (POST 6) figure to have more ground to make up. Expect a moderate to honest pace given the competitive nature of the morning line. The winner is likely to come from the front or from a stalking position within two to three lengths of the leader.

Key Contenders

Tricky Highway (POST 2) is the morning line favorite at 2-1 under trainer Frank Lucarelli and jockey Pablo Castillo. Lucarelli is a capable conditioner at Emerald Downs with solid success in maiden claiming events. The inside post at 1210 furlongs is a significant advantage, allowing Castillo to establish position early without burning extra energy. At 2-1, the price is short but reflects a horse with the clearest path to the front in this field.

Con Leche (POST 1) at 4-1 under trainer Jorge Rosales and jockey Alex Cruz brings the rail draw, and Rosales is the meet's most active trainer. Cruz is a leading rider at the meet and knows this track exceptionally well. The challenge for Con Leche (POST 1) is breaking cleanly and avoiding early traffic from the inside, but with Cruz in the irons, that concern is minimized.

Secondary Choices

Roxie's Secret (POST 4) at 4-1 under trainer David Martinez and jockey Karlo Lopez draws the four hole, which is a solid pace position at this distance. Lopez is an experienced hand at Emerald Downs and will have this filly in the right spot early. If the pace is honest, Roxie's Secret (POST 4) could be sitting on the outside of the leaders rounding the turn, giving Lopez the option to angle into clear running.

Go Prancealot (POST 3) at 5-1 under trainer Jorge Maravilla with Blake Nunnally up draws the three hole and should also have a stalking position. Maravilla has shown the ability to get maiden claimers ready, and Nunnally is a competent apprentice-level rider.

Longshots

Smoothie Ryder (POST 5) at 8-1 is the second Rosales entry, ridden by Adrian Castellanos. The dual Rosales entry is worth noting — when a trainer runs two horses in the same race, stable connections can sometimes offer insight through betting patterns. At 8-1, Smoothie Ryder (POST 5) may offer value if she breaks alertly and gets a favorable trip.

Too Much Tatum (POST 7) at 12-1 under trainer Alexis Silva-Martinez and jockey Kevin Orozco faces a tough post draw at the outside in this sprint. Getting into contention early from post seven will require a sharp break. Difficult to recommend at this price without more evidence of speed.

Polaris Dawn (POST 6) at 15-1 under Silva-Martinez and jockey Talliyah Timentwa is the longest shot in the field. Silva-Martinez handles two runners in this race, and Polaris Dawn (POST 6) is clearly the second string of that duo. Hard to make a case here.

Selections

Win: Tricky Highway (POST 2) Place: Con Leche (POST 1) Show: Roxie's Secret (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: Key Tricky Highway (POST 2) on top in exactas with Con Leche (POST 1) and Roxie's Secret (POST 4). A small exacta box of Con Leche (POST 1) and Tricky Highway (POST 2) makes sense at even money returns. Use Smoothie Ryder (POST 5) as a small saver underneath in trifectas.

RACE 2 — Post 5:18 PM — 1210f | D | M | Md 25000 | BON | Purse $16,000

An upgrade in class to maiden $25,000 claiming for horses that have never won, run at 1210 furlongs on the dirt. A seven-horse field with a co-morning-line of Silicon Native (POST 1) and Oregonian (POST 6) both at 2-1. This is the most competitively priced race on the card through the first two events.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

Silicon Native (POST 1) from the rail will likely be sent forward early under trainer Debbie Peery and Kevin Krigger, who is one of the top jockeys on the meet. Oregonian (POST 6) at co-favorite from the six post will need to work into the race from off the pace or find running room down the stretch. With two 2-1 choices and several mid-range horses, the pace could develop into a contested early affair. Count Dalia (POST 3) and Somekindaoutlaw (POST 4) figure to be in midfield.

Key Contenders

Silicon Native (POST 1) at 2-1 under trainer Debbie Peery and Kevin Krigger is a formidable combination at Emerald Downs. Peery is a well-established trainer in the Pacific Northwest with a strong record placing horses appropriately in maiden claiming company. Krigger is one of the best jockeys on the West Coast circuit and brings class above this level. The rail draw at 1210 furlongs can be advantageous for a speed-oriented horse, and if Silicon Native (POST 1) can break sharply, this could be a wire-to-wire effort.

Oregonian (POST 6) at 2-1 under trainer Faustino Patino and C. Montalvo is the other co-favorite. The six post is workable at this distance, but Oregonian (POST 6) will need to be ridden aggressively out of the gate to avoid being mired too far back. Montalvo is a capable rider who has had success at this meet.

Secondary Choices

Count Dalia (POST 3) at 4-1 under trainer Patricia Leaney and Alex Cruz draws a favorable post and should be competitive. Cruz's familiarity with the track and the three post gives Count Dalia (POST 3) a chance to get into a stalking position early. Leaney is a steady conditioner whose horses are usually fit when they show.

Somekindaoutlaw (POST 4) at 6-1 under trainer Doug McPhee and Silvio Ruiz Amador presents solid midfield value. McPhee has had consistent success at Emerald Downs, and the four post is one of the better draws at this distance. Worth including in exotic wagers.

Longshots

Sir Bark Knight (POST 7) at 8-1 under trainer Scott Tubbs and Karlo Lopez draws the outside post, which is a disadvantage at 1210 furlongs. Lopez can work horses from tough draws, but the seven hole in a seven-horse field is a concern. Tubbs occasionally fires with longer-priced horses, making a small saver worth considering.

Livin Right (POST 2) at 10-1 under trainer Jorge Rosales and Blake Nunnally is the longest of the Rosales entries today. At 10-1, there may be some morning line overlap inflating this price, and Rosales has enough horses in today's card that Livin Right (POST 2) might not receive the full stable attention. Below-average interest.

Another Lifer (POST 5) at 12-1 under trainer Jim Gilmour and jockey Allyssa Morales is a difficult recommendation. The 12-1 morning line in a field with two 2-1 choices suggests Another Lifer (POST 5) may be outclassed or lightly regarded by the connections. Use only in wider exotic coverage.

Selections

Win: Silicon Native (POST 1) Place: Oregonian (POST 6) Show: Count Dalia (POST 3)

Betting Strategy: Silicon Native (POST 1) is the win play, with the exacta keyed over Oregonian (POST 6) and Count Dalia (POST 3). The co-favorite dynamic makes the exacta between the two 2-1 shots a potential overlay in the pools. Trifecta: 1 over 6 and 3 over 3, 4, and 7.

RACE 3 — Post 5:46 PM — 1210f | D | A | Alw 26000nc | BUM | Purse $26,000

The class race of the afternoon — a $26,000 non-winners of a condition allowance for mares, run at 1210 furlongs on the dirt. Five fillies and mares with Aloha Breeze (POST 1) hammered to 1-1 morning line favoritism. This short field should produce a definitive pace scenario.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

With only five runners and a heavy favorite on the rail, the pace picture is fairly straightforward. Aloha Breeze (POST 1) under C. Montalvo and trainer Tom Wenzel will be sent to establish command early from the perfect rail post. Saleen G T (POST 2) next door under trainer Frank Lucarelli and I.D. Enriquez will apply pressure. If these two battle early, it could set up a strong closing run for Stay Sassy (POST 5) or Someday Lady (POST 3). However, if Aloha Breeze (POST 1) can steal cheap early fractions, the heavy favorite may simply gate-to-wire this field.

Key Contenders

Aloha Breeze (POST 1) at 1-1 under trainer Tom Wenzel and C. Montalvo is the class of this field, installed at morning line odds that reflect near-certainty. Wenzel is a capable trainer at the Emerald Downs level, and Aloha Breeze (POST 1) clearly warrants the short price based on class and form. The rail draw is perfect. At even money, this is a legitimate single in multi-race sequences rather than a win bet unless supporting exotic plays.

Saleen G T (POST 2) at 2-1 under trainer Frank Lucarelli and I.D. Enriquez figures to be the main test for the favorite. Lucarelli is a quality conditioner who consistently places horses competitively in allowance company. From the two post, Saleen G T (POST 2) can press or stalk Aloha Breeze (POST 1) and could capitalize if the favorite is asked to work hard early.

Secondary Choices

Precise Timing (POST 4) at 4-1 under trainer Kay Cooper and Kevin Orozco has mid-card appeal as a potential closer. The four post gives Precise Timing (POST 4) room to maneuver, and Orozco can find horses in the late stages. If the pace is contested up front between the top two, Precise Timing (POST 4) could pick up a piece.

Stay Sassy (POST 5) at 5-1 under trainer Charles Essex and Kevin Krigger is the farthest outside in this field. Krigger elevates any horse he rides, and Stay Sassy (POST 5) at 5-1 represents solid value if she can overcome the outside post in a small field. Essex is a steady conditioner, and Krigger will have this filly well-placed despite the five draw.

Longshots

Someday Lady (POST 3) at 6-1 under trainer Mike Puhich and Alex Cruz is an interesting longshot from the three hole. Puhich is a respected trainer at this level, and Cruz is the type of rider who can get a horse into a winning position if given any opportunity. At 6-1, Someday Lady (POST 3) offers value if the pace collapses in front. Include in trifectas.

Selections

Win: Aloha Breeze (POST 1) Place: Saleen G T (POST 2) Show: Stay Sassy (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: Use Aloha Breeze (POST 1) as a single in multi-race sequences. The win bet alone at 1-1 offers minimal return. The primary play is exacta with Aloha Breeze (POST 1) over Saleen G T (POST 2), Stay Sassy (POST 5), and Precise Timing (POST 4). An upset exacta with Saleen G T (POST 2) on top over Aloha Breeze (POST 1) is worth a small investment if you believe the pace scenario plays against the chalk.

RACE 4 — Post 6:15 PM — 1210f | D | C | Clm 3500b | BUM | Purse $15,000

A $3,500 claiming sprint for mares at 1210 furlongs — bottom rung claiming territory, but with eight horses this field has legitimate depth. Bakburner (POST 4) is the morning line favorite at 2-1 under trainer Vince Gibson and Karlo Lopez.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

Eight runners in a cheap claiming sprint typically produces a chaotic early pace, with several horses angling for position. Bakburner (POST 4) from the favorable four post under Lopez figures to be near the lead. C Her Beauty (POST 1) from the rail under Krigger and trainer Scott Tubbs will also be forward. Bronze Girl (POST 7) and Prancing Matilda (POST 8) from the outside posts will need to angle in. With multiple speed horses in this field, the pace could be contentious, which may give an opportunity to a closer.

Key Contenders

Bakburner (POST 4) at 2-1 under trainer Vince Gibson and Karlo Lopez is the clear morning line choice. Gibson is a sharp conditioner at the claiming level, and Lopez at 2-1 on a horse positioned in the four hole at 1210 furlongs is a solid combination. If this filly can establish position within the first two furlongs, she should be tough to catch at this class level.

C Her Beauty (POST 1) at 4-1 under trainer Scott Tubbs and Kevin Krigger is a compelling alternative. Tubbs and Krigger form a formidable pairing, and the rail post in a sprint favors a horse that can break alertly. Krigger's tactical ability makes C Her Beauty (POST 1) dangerous at 4-1.

Secondary Choices

Prancing Matilda (POST 8) at 4-1 under trainer Joe Toye and Silvio Ruiz Amador faces a tough outside draw but has appeal at the co-second choice odds. Toye is a capable claiming trainer, and Amador has shown the ability to overcome wide trips. If Prancing Matilda (POST 8) can angle in early and find a stalking spot, she could be a factor in the stretch.

La Popis (POST 5) at 6-1 under trainer Jerry Kum Hon Cheung and Jose Elias Rodriguez is in a solid pace position at the five post. At 6-1, La Popis (POST 5) offers value in exotics.

Bronze Girl (POST 7) at 6-1 under trainer Jorge Maravilla and Blake Nunnally is another outside-post longshot with some appeal. Maravilla has occasional success at this level, and Nunnally can get horses rolling late.

Longshots

Union Coach (POST 2) at 12-1 under trainer Rigoberto Velasquez and Adrian Castellanos is a significant outsider. The two post is workable, but the odds suggest this filly is below the top tier of this field.

Shanghai Barbie (POST 6) at 15-1 under trainer Jose Puentes and Jairo Moreno faces a tough battle in a competitive eight-horse field. Difficult to recommend in win wagering.

Dress Rehearsal (POST 3) at 20-1 under trainer Jorge Rosales and Allyssa Morales is the longest shot on today's card. Even with Rosales saddling, the 20-1 morning line suggests connections do not expect a big effort. A wide-open trifecta saver at best.

Selections

Win: Bakburner (POST 4) Place: C Her Beauty (POST 1) Show: Prancing Matilda (POST 8)

Betting Strategy: Key Bakburner (POST 4) on top in exactas with C Her Beauty (POST 1) and Prancing Matilda (POST 8). Use La Popis (POST 5) and Bronze Girl (POST 7) as trifecta fillers. The eight-horse field makes a $1 trifecta box of the top four horses a cost-effective play.

RACE 5 — Post 6:45 PM — 1320f | D | C | Clm 5000 | BUN | Purse $12,000

A $5,000 claiming sprint at 1320 furlongs for horses that have not won recently, with co-morning-line favorites Great Runner (POST 4) and Olympic Legend (POST 6) both listed at 2-1. This seven-horse field sets up as a top-two race with legitimate upside from the rest of the field.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

Great Runner (POST 4) under trainer Jorge Rosales and Alex Cruz figures to be on the engine early. Olympic Legend (POST 6) under trainer Debbie Peery and Kevin Krigger from the outside post may stalk. Bad Sneakers (POST 3) under trainer Joe Toye and Amador could be forwardly placed. At 1320 furlongs, the slightly longer trip may allow closers a chance. Blackjack And Beer (POST 7) under trainer Kendra Lyons and Lopez from the outside is the farthest back horse and will need pace to slow.

Key Contenders

Great Runner (POST 4) at 2-1 under Rosales and Cruz is an interesting combination. Rosales continues his prolific booking of horses on this card, and Cruz is in top form at the meet. The four post at 1320 furlongs gives Great Runner (POST 4) a clean run to the first turn. Cruz will have this horse in a prime position.

Olympic Legend (POST 6) at 2-1 under Peery and Krigger is equally compelling. Peery and Krigger have already combined for a key entry in Race 2, and if both fire, this tandem could be the value angle of the afternoon. The six post at 1320 furlongs requires some early racing room, but Krigger is a master at saving ground.

Secondary Choices

Blackjack And Beer (POST 7) at 5-1 under trainer Kendra Lyons and Karlo Lopez from the outside post is a fascinating secondary play. Lopez knows this track well, and at 5-1 this horse offers meaningful value if the early pace between the two co-favorites produces a fast enough tempo to set up a closer. Blackjack And Beer (POST 7) at 5-1 is a potential overlay.

Bad Sneakers (POST 3) at 4-1 under trainer Joe Toye and Amador from the three post figures to be a pace factor. Toye's horses are competitive in this class range, and the three post is favorable at this distance.

Longshots

Keep It Coming (POST 1) at 6-1 under trainer Ian Jewell and Blake Nunnally from the rail is a speed horse that could battle early. Jewell occasionally fires with rail-drawn horses in sprint conditions.

Gypsy Gun (POST 5) at 10-1 under trainer Michael Bullene and Montalvo is an interesting name but faces significant odds against more established contenders.

Ice Tower (POST 2) at 15-1 under trainer Vince Gibson and Talliyah Timentwa is a significant outsider. Gibson is active on the card but this particular horse draws a bottom price.

Selections

Win: Olympic Legend (POST 6) Place: Great Runner (POST 4) Show: Blackjack And Beer (POST 7)

Betting Strategy: Exacta box of Olympic Legend (POST 6) and Great Runner (POST 4) is the primary play. At co-2-1, this exacta could return in the $10-14 range for a $2 wager, which is solid value in this class range. Trifecta: Olympic Legend (POST 6) and Great Runner (POST 4) on top, with Bad Sneakers (POST 3) and Blackjack And Beer (POST 7) for third.

RACE 6 — Post 7:15 PM — 1210f | D | C | Clm 3500b | BUN | Purse $15,000

The second $3,500 claiming sprint of the afternoon, this time for horses that have not won at a higher price recently, with nine runners. Real Good Magic (POST 9) is the morning line choice at 3-1 under trainer Alexis Silva-Martinez and Silvio Ruiz Amador. The nine-post is a major concern in a sprint at this distance.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

With nine runners, the early pace in this race could be frenetic. Mojave (POST 3) under trainer Jaymie Pearman Cruz and Alex Cruz is a logical speed type from the three post. Roll Dem Bones (POST 7) under trainer Joe Toye and Karlo Lopez could be forwardly placed. Bedrock (POST 1) from the rail under Timentwa could push for the early lead. The wide-open pace scenario and large field makes this a difficult race to call, and the trifecta and superfecta pools could offer tremendous value.

Key Contenders

Real Good Magic (POST 9) at 3-1 under Silva-Martinez and Amador is the morning line choice despite the outside post. Silva-Martinez conditions multiple horses today, and connections have supported this horse as the top of the card. The nine post is a major negative, but Amador can overcome wide trips if the horse is talented enough. This is a horse to respect but not necessarily to rely on in win wagering at 3-1 from post nine.

Mojave (POST 3) at 4-1 under trainer Jaymie Pearman Cruz and Alex Cruz is a more appealing alternative on pace grounds. The three post in a nine-horse sprint at 1210 furlongs is significantly better than the nine post. Cruz has been sharp all meet, and a 4-1 horse from a favorable post is the type of value play that experienced handicappers favor.

Secondary Choices

Roll Dem Bones (POST 7) at 4-1 under trainer Joe Toye and Karlo Lopez co-shares the secondary odds with Mojave (POST 3). Toye and Lopez are both active today, and this horse's post position, while outside, is manageable if Lopez can angle in quickly. At 4-1 from post seven, Roll Dem Bones (POST 7) is live.

Upright (POST 4) at 6-1 under trainer Kendra Lyons and Kevin Krigger is an intriguing spot. Lyons runs two horses in this race — Upright (POST 4) and Won Bid (POST 2) — and the fact that Krigger is assigned to Upright (POST 4) rather than Won Bid (POST 2) tells you which horse the stable views as the stronger runner. Upright (POST 4) at 6-1 with Krigger aboard is a value play.

Longshots

Bedrock (POST 1) at 8-1 under trainer Doug Carlson and Talliyah Timentwa is an inside speed horse that could be dangerous if allowed to get loose on the lead. At 8-1, there is some value here in exotic plays.

Stephen James (POST 6) at 8-1 under trainer Mary Pirone and Lenny Seecharan is a longer price with limited upside in a deep nine-horse field.

Om Fire (POST 8) at 10-1 under trainer Liz Kowalski and Montalvo faces a tough outside draw in a large field sprint. Include only in wide exotic coverage.

Won Bid (POST 2) at 10-1 under trainer Kendra Lyons and F.T. Alvarado is the second Lyons entry. As noted, the assignment of Krigger to Upright (POST 4) rather than this horse suggests Won Bid (POST 2) is the stable's secondary option.

Stan From Malibu (POST 5) at 12-1 under trainer Sergio Perez and Blake Nunnally is a mid-field horse with limited appeal at double-digit morning line odds.

Selections

Win: Mojave (POST 3) Place: Real Good Magic (POST 9) Show: Upright (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: Mojave (POST 3) over Real Good Magic (POST 9) and Upright (POST 4) in exactas. The upset play is Mojave (POST 3) with Upright (POST 4) in exotics. Trifecta: 3 with 9 and 4 and 7 and 1 in various combinations. The nine-horse field makes the $1 trifecta the primary exotic play. Superfecta with the top four at $0.10 per combination offers excellent coverage in a field this deep.

RACE 7 — Post 7:45 PM — 1320f | D | C | Clm 25000 | BUN | Purse $23,000

The premier event of the afternoon — a $25,000 claiming route at 1320 furlongs with a $23,000 purse. Seven runners, with Baladi (POST 7) at 2-1 installed as the morning line choice under trainer Mike Puhich and Pablo Castillo. This is the race where serious money and exotics will converge.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Counteract (POST 1) under trainer Mark Cloutier and Amador from the rail is a likely pace-setter at 4-1. Dirt Road Red (POST 2) under trainer Shelly Crowe and Kevin Krigger at 5-1 from the two post is another logical speed type. With two established pace horses from inside posts and a deeper field, the pace figure in this race should be honest, which could set up Baladi (POST 7) to come running from behind. Adios Jojo (POST 6) under trainer Howard Gibson and Adrian Castellanos at 3-1 from the six post is the second choice and should find a comfortable stalking position.

Key Contenders

Baladi (POST 7) at 2-1 under trainer Mike Puhich and Pablo Castillo arrives as the morning line choice. Puhich is a respected trainer at Emerald Downs who conditions horses carefully, and Castillo is a seasoned jockey capable of rating a horse from an outside post at this distance. The seven post at 1320 furlongs requires some early positioning, but at 2-1 this horse is trusted by the morning line maker to have enough class to overcome the draw.

Adios Jojo (POST 6) at 3-1 under trainer Howard Gibson and Adrian Castellanos is the most dangerous horse in the field from a pace and post standpoint. Gibson is an experienced claiming trainer who places horses well, and Castellanos is a competent jockey who can hold a stalking position through the first turn. At 3-1, Adios Jojo (POST 6) represents excellent value compared to the 2-1 favorite.

Secondary Choices

Counteract (POST 1) at 4-1 under trainer Mark Cloutier and Amador from the rail is the most interesting secondary play. If Counteract (POST 1) can get out of the gate cleanly and establish the lead without being pressed hard early, the rail advantage at 1320 furlongs could prove decisive. At 4-1 from the ideal post, this is a legitimate upset candidate.

Dirt Road Red (POST 2) at 5-1 under trainer Shelly Crowe and Kevin Krigger is another compelling option. The two post in a mile race is nearly as advantageous as the rail, and Krigger is the top rider at this meet. Dirt Road Red (POST 2) at 5-1 with Krigger is a strong value play.

Longshots

Dynamic Secret (POST 4) at 6-1 under trainer Doug McPhee and Karlo Lopez draws the comfortable four post. McPhee is capable at the claiming level, and Lopez is active throughout the card. Dynamic Secret (POST 4) at 6-1 is worth including in trifecta and superfecta combinations.

Fantastic Day (POST 5) at 10-1 under trainer Jorge Rosales and Montalvo is the Rosales entry in the class race of the card. At 10-1, either Rosales' multiple entries today have diluted public support on this horse, or it is legitimately outclassed. Include in wide trifecta coverage only.

Golden River (POST 3) at 12-1 under trainer Sergio Perez and Jose Elias Rodriguez is the longest shot in the field. At the $25,000 claiming level with a 12-1 morning line, this horse faces a tough assignment. Wide exotic coverage only.

Selections

Win: Adios Jojo (POST 6) Place: Baladi (POST 7) Show: Counteract (POST 1)

Betting Strategy: This is the marquee race for exotic wagering. The primary exacta play is Adios Jojo (POST 6) over Baladi (POST 7), with the reverse also worth a play. The trifecta: 6 and 7 on top, with 1, 2, and 4 for third. Counteract (POST 1) and Dirt Road Red (POST 2) are legitimate threats at prices that offer better value than the chalk. Consider a saver exacta of Dirt Road Red (POST 2) over Baladi (POST 7) as well.

RACE 8 — Post 8:15 PM — 1430f | D | C | Clm 8000n3l | BUM | Purse $11,500

The finale is a $8,000 claiming route at 1430 furlongs — nine furlongs — for horses that have not won three races, fillies and mares. Eight runners with Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) installed as the 2-1 favorite under trainer Jorge Rosales and Alex Cruz.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

At nine furlongs, pace shape is critical. The 1430 furlongs distance at Emerald Downs is the longest test on today's card, and horses with route experience and stamina will be at a premium. Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) under Cruz figures to be placed in a stalking position rather than on the lead. Chokechery Shari (POST 3) under Lopez at 4-1 and Hakuhia (POST 7) under trainer Steve Fisher and F.T. Alvarado at 4-1 figure to be forwardly placed. Savita (POST 1) under Krigger from the rail could set the tempo. With multiple horses capable of showing speed, the pace scenario is contested, which could benefit a closer at this longer trip.

Key Contenders

Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) at 2-1 under Rosales and Cruz is the clear top choice. Rosales has trained multiple horses on today's card, and assigning Cruz to this horse in the final race suggests it is the most important of the Rosales runners. The five post at nine furlongs gives Cruz options — he can rate behind the pace and make a sustained run in the stretch, which is the ideal setup for a route race at this level.

Chokechery Shari (POST 3) at 4-1 under trainer Jim Gilmour and Karlo Lopez is the most dangerous alternative. Gilmour is a capable route conditioner, and Lopez has been busy and effective all card. From the three post at 1430 furlongs, Chokechery Shari (POST 3) can find an ideal tracking position.

Secondary Choices

Hakuhia (POST 7) at 4-1 under trainer Steve Fisher and F.T. Alvarado is equally priced as a secondary choice. Fisher is a respected trainer, and Alvarado brings solid experience. From the seven post, Hakuhia (POST 7) will need to work for position early, but the longer trip should allow more time to settle.

Bumping River (POST 4) at 6-1 under trainer Jose Navarro and Francisco Diaz-Lopez is an interesting secondary player. The four post is excellent for a route race, and Diaz-Lopez has shown ability on the Emerald Downs circuit.

Longshots

Savita (POST 1) at 8-1 under trainer Alan Bozell and Kevin Krigger is a fascinating longshot. Krigger getting a horse at this price in the final race of a long card is worth noting — top jockeys sometimes reserve their best efforts for later in the day on horses where they see a chance. At 8-1, Savita (POST 1) with Krigger from the rail at nine furlongs is a saver worth including.

Rabble (POST 6) at 8-1 under trainer Howard Gibson and Talliyah Timentwa is another longshot to consider. Gibson runs Adios Jojo (POST 6) in Race 7, and if that horse fires, the connections may feel confident in their stable's form heading into Race 8. Rabble (POST 6) at 8-1 is a situational play.

Dandy Day (POST 8) at 10-1 under trainer Alexis Silva-Martinez and Amador is a route longshot. Silva-Martinez has run multiple horses today, and at 10-1 in the closer, Dandy Day (POST 8) appears to be a secondary consideration.

Pocket Knife (POST 2) at 15-1 under trainer Doug Carlson and Lenny Seecharan is the longest price in the field. At 15-1, Pocket Knife (POST 2) faces a steep challenge in a nine-furlong route where class and stamina are tested.

Selections

Win: Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) Place: Chokechery Shari (POST 3) Show: Hakuhia (POST 7)

Betting Strategy: Key Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) on top in exactas with Chokechery Shari (POST 3) and Hakuhia (POST 7). The trifecta: 5 over 3 and 7 over 4, 7, and 1 with a saver on Savita (POST 1) at 8-1. Use Savita (POST 1) in any superfecta fourth-leg combinations.

JOCKEY NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Kevin Krigger is positioned as one of the top riders at the current Emerald Downs spring meet and carries multiple big-stable mounts today. His assignments include Silicon Native (POST 1) in Race 2, Stay Sassy (POST 5) in Race 3, C Her Beauty (POST 1) in Race 4, Olympic Legend (POST 6) in Race 5, Upright (POST 4) in Race 6, Dirt Road Red (POST 2) in Race 7, and Savita (POST 1) in Race 8. Krigger is a West Coast-based rider who has shown consistent ability to get horses into winning position at Emerald Downs. His mounts today span a wide range of class levels, and his presence in a race is a significant class upgrade for any horse he rides at this level. Handicappers who follow Krigger closely at this meet should note that Dirt Road Red (POST 2) in Race 7 at 5-1 and Upright (POST 4) in Race 6 at 6-1 are the most compelling value plays of his book today.

Alex Cruz is equally loaded with mounts today, riding Con Leche (POST 1) in Race 1, Count Dalia (POST 3) in Race 2, Someday Lady (POST 3) in Race 3, Great Runner (POST 4) in Race 5, Mojave (POST 3) in Race 6, and Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) in Race 8. Cruz's local familiarity with the Emerald Downs surface is an asset, and the late-card assignment on Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) suggests connections trust him with their top horse.

Karlo Lopez is the third key jockey with a full book of rides today. His assignments include Roxie's Secret (POST 4) in Race 1, Sir Bark Knight (POST 7) in Race 2, Bakburner (POST 4) in Race 4, Blackjack And Beer (POST 7) in Race 5, Roll Dem Bones (POST 7) in Race 6, Dynamic Secret (POST 4) in Race 7, and Chokechery Shari (POST 3) in Race 8. Lopez has the most volume of any jockey today, and experienced horseplayers know that a jockey riding seven races in a day can have selective attention toward horses where they see a genuine chance.

Silvio Ruiz Amador rides five horses today — Somekindaoutlaw (POST 4) in Race 2, Prancing Matilda (POST 8) in Race 4, Bad Sneakers (POST 3) in Race 5, Real Good Magic (POST 9) in Race 6, Counteract (POST 1) in Race 7, and Dandy Day (POST 8) in Race 8. Amador has solid experience at this meet and is capable of firing on multiple mounts in a day.

C. Montalvo rides Aloha Breeze (POST 1) in Race 3 as one of the day's most prominent assignments. Montalvo also handles Oregonian (POST 6) in Race 2 and Gypsy Gun (POST 5) in Race 5 and Fantastic Day (POST 5) in Race 7, and Om Fire (POST 8) in Race 6. The Race 3 ride on Aloha Breeze (POST 1) is the standout assignment of Montalvo's day, and that horse's 1-1 morning line speaks to the quality of the mount.

Blake Nunnally rides throughout the card with mounts including Go Prancealot (POST 3) in Race 1, Livin Right (POST 2) in Race 2, Bronze Girl (POST 7) in Race 4, Keep It Coming (POST 1) in Race 5, and Stan From Malibu (POST 5) in Race 6. Nunnally has an apprentice book with a range of longshots and mid-priced horses.

TRAINER NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Jorge Rosales is unquestionably the dominant trainer on today's card with entries in Races 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8. Rosales saddles Smoothie Ryder (POST 5) and Con Leche (POST 1) in Race 1, Livin Right (POST 2) in Race 2, Dress Rehearsal (POST 3) in Race 4, Great Runner (POST 4) in Race 5, Fantastic Day (POST 5) in Race 7, and Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) in Race 8. Rosales' late-card assignment of Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) with Alex Cruz in the nine-furlong finale is the most significant of his day's work, and when a trainer with this volume assigns his top jockey to a specific horse, it is worth taking notice. Rosales is an established conditioner at Emerald Downs who knows how to place horses effectively.

Debbie Peery handles Silicon Native (POST 1) in Race 2 and Olympic Legend (POST 6) in Race 5, both with Kevin Krigger. When a trainer repeatedly pairs with the same top jockey on a card, it reflects confidence in both horses, and the Peery-Krigger combination is one to watch in both races.

Frank Lucarelli trains Tricky Highway (POST 2) in Race 1 and Saleen G T (POST 2) in Race 3, both from favorable inside posts. Lucarelli is a reliable conditioner at the Emerald Downs level with a steady win percentage in the 14-18% range historically at this meet. Both horses today draw favorable posts.

Alexis Silva-Martinez has multiple entries on the card, including Too Much Tatum (POST 7) and Polaris Dawn (POST 6) in Race 1, Real Good Magic (POST 9) in Race 6, and Dandy Day (POST 8) in Race 8. Real Good Magic (POST 9) is the morning line favorite in Race 6, which reflects that Silva-Martinez has positioned that horse as the most capable of the stable's Memorial Day runners.

Vince Gibson saddles Bakburner (POST 4) in Race 4 and Ice Tower (POST 2) in Race 5. Bakburner (POST 4) is the morning line favorite in Race 4, and Gibson has historically shown the ability to condition horses at the $3,500-$5,000 claiming level at Emerald Downs.

Scott Tubbs trains C Her Beauty (POST 1) in Race 4 and Sir Bark Knight (POST 7) in Race 2. The pairing of Krigger on C Her Beauty (POST 1) in Race 4 at 4-1 is the more intriguing of the Tubbs entries today.

Joe Toye has a multi-horse day with Bad Sneakers (POST 3) in Race 5, Roll Dem Bones (POST 7) in Race 6, and Pocket Knife (POST 2) in Race 8. Toye is a solid claiming trainer at Emerald Downs with a workmanlike approach to placing horses in competitive spots.

Mike Puhich trains Someday Lady (POST 3) in Race 3 and Baladi (POST 7) in Race 7. Baladi (POST 7) is the 2-1 morning line favorite in Race 7, Puhich's most significant assignment of the day.

Kendra Lyons runs Won Bid (POST 2) and Upright (POST 4) in Race 6, and Blackjack And Beer (POST 7) in Race 5. As noted in the Race 6 analysis, the assignment of Krigger to Upright (POST 4) over Won Bid (POST 2) is a meaningful stable signal.

BEST WAGERING STRATEGIES AND VALUE PLAYS

Memorial Day at Emerald Downs is traditionally a strong handle day, meaning the tote pools will be deeper than a typical weekday card, and value will be harder to manufacture in straight betting but more readily available in the exotics. Below are the key wagering angles and structures for today's eight-race card.

Win Bet Value Plays: The top value plays in straight wagering are Adios Jojo (POST 6) at 3-1 in Race 7, Dirt Road Red (POST 2) at 5-1 in Race 7, Mojave (POST 3) at 4-1 in Race 6, Upright (POST 4) at 6-1 in Race 6 with Krigger, and Blackjack And Beer (POST 7) at 5-1 in Race 5. Of these, Adios Jojo (POST 6) in Race 7 represents the strongest win play of the card, combining a favorable post, a capable trainer-jockey combination, and a morning line price that should hold or slightly drift in the pools given the public's attraction to Baladi (POST 7) at 2-1.

Exacta Plays: The Race 7 exacta between Adios Jojo (POST 6) and Baladi (POST 7) is the most compelling of the day. Key it both ways for a $2 investment each direction — the payoff if Adios Jojo (POST 6) beats Baladi (POST 7) could return in the $18-25 range, which is excellent value on the race card's premier event. In Race 5, the Olympic Legend (POST 6) and Great Runner (POST 4) exacta box is the structural play of choice.

Trifecta Structures: Race 6 with nine runners is the prime trifecta target. Key Mojave (POST 3) and Real Good Magic (POST 9) on top with Upright (POST 4), Roll Dem Bones (POST 7), and Bedrock (POST 1) in third. A $1 trifecta partial wheel using those horses in a nine-horse field with a contested pace should return meaningful value. Race 8, the finale, is also a strong trifecta target keying Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) on top.

Pick 4 Sequence Recommendation: The best Pick 4 sequence runs through Races 5, 6, 7, and 8.

In Race 5, use Olympic Legend (POST 6) and Great Runner (POST 4) as the two-horse leg.

In Race 6, use Mojave (POST 3), Real Good Magic (POST 9), and Upright (POST 4) as a three-horse spread.

In Race 7, use Adios Jojo (POST 6), Baladi (POST 7), and Counteract (POST 1) as a three-horse spread.

In Race 8, use Can'tdealwithit (POST 5), Chokechery Shari (POST 3), and Hakuhia (POST 7) as a three-horse spread.

This creates a 2x3x3x3 structure with 54 combinations. At $0.50 per combination, the total investment is $27. Given the race conditions and field sizes, a returning ticket in a Pick 4 at Emerald Downs on a card like this could realistically pay in the $150-400 range depending on which horses fire, with stronger returns if a mid-price winner surfaces in Race 6 or 7.

Pick 5 Opportunity: If Emerald Downs offers a Pick 5 beginning in Race 4, the structure would include Bakburner (POST 4) as a strong single in Race 4 before expanding into the later legs. A Pick 5 single on Bakburner (POST 4) in Race 4 followed by the Race 5 through Race 8 combinations creates a focused and cost-effective multi-race sequence.

Best Single of the Card: Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) in Race 8. The combination of the top trainer on the card in Rosales, the top-form jockey in Cruz, the favorable post draw for a route race, and the 2-1 morning line in a field where the price reflects genuine class superiority makes Can'tdealwithit (POST 5) the strongest single on the program. Use as a back-half anchor in all multi-race sequences.

Best Value Play of the Card: Upright (POST 4) in Race 6 at 6-1. Trainer Kendra Lyons assigning Kevin Krigger to Upright (POST 4) over stable companion Won Bid (POST 2) is a clear stable signal. Add in that Krigger is the meet's best rider, and this horse is in the four post in a nine-horse sprint — the combination of factors creates an overlay situation that sharp bettors should exploit in win wagering and exactas.
