Race Day Overview — Evangeline Downs | April 18, 2026

Evangeline Downs opens its Saturday night card with nine races spanning a mix of claiming, maiden, allowance, and optional claiming conditions. The card features a healthy spread of distances from six furlongs up to a mile and three-sixteenths, with one turf event in Race 6. The richest race on the card is Race 8, an allowance event carrying a $41,000 purse for horses that have not won a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter. Race 7, the optional claimer at $20,000 for fillies and mares, offers $34,000 and draws a competitive seven-horse field. The first post is scheduled for 6:30 PM Central time.

Notable on the trainer front, the Thomas Lee barn fields runners in multiple races, including a pair of entries in Race 1 with Star Apriority (1) and Gypsy Squall (2). The Allen Ray Landry stable also has multiple starters across the card. Jonathan Wong saddles horses in Races 5, 6, and 7, making him one of the most active trainers tonight. The Duhon family barns — both Paul Duhon and Joseph O. Duhon — each have horses scattered throughout the card.

Jockey Jansen Melancon is among the most sought-after riders on this program, picking up key mounts in Races 1, 4, 7, and 8. Harry Hernandez also has a full book, appearing in Races 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. C.J. McMahon rides in Races 2, 5, and 7. Colby Hernandez appears in Races 1 and 8. The presence of multiple Grade 1-winning jockey Micah Husbands returning to Gulfstream is noted nationally, but the local EVD colony remains stable with its core riders.

Weather and Track Conditions — Evangeline Downs | April 18, 2026

Evangeline Downs sits in Opelousas, Louisiana, where April weather is characteristically warm and humid. Temperatures on the evening of April 18 are expected to be in the mid-to-upper 70s Fahrenheit, with humidity levels running elevated as is typical for south-central Louisiana in the spring. There is a moderate chance of afternoon and early evening thunderstorm activity in the St. Landry Parish region, which could affect the main track surface heading into the early portion of the card.

If any rain falls before or during the racing program, the Evangeline Downs main track — a one-mile dirt oval — can shift quickly from fast to good or even sloppy conditions, given the nature of its sandy loam base. The turf course for Race 6 is a 7/8-mile inner turf course and would be taken off the grass if any significant precipitation is recorded, with the race likely moving to the main dirt track. Trainers with horses entered on turf who also have dirt form should be monitored closely if the turf comes off.

As of the latest available information, the track is listed as fast for the dirt surface. Any change in that designation should be treated as a significant handicapping factor, particularly for pace-sensitive sprinters on tonight's card.

Track and Post Position Bias — Evangeline Downs

Evangeline Downs has historically shown a moderate inside bias in sprint races, particularly at the six-furlong distance where horses breaking from posts 1 through 4 enjoy a shorter run to the first turn and can settle into position with less lateral movement. In route races around two turns, the outside posts from 6 through 10 or higher can be problematic at the longer distances because the run to the first turn is not as forgiving.

On fast tracks at EVD, speed has been consistently rewarded in sprints. Front-runners and horses that can sit just off the pace in the two-path have the best record of success when the track is rated fast and dry. In overnight racing conditions typical of a Saturday card, the bias tends to favor horses with early pace because the fields are often populated by horses that prefer to be stalked rather than rate off the pace.

In route races, particularly the mile and three-sixteenths events like Race 4 and Race 7, outside posts carry more risk, but class and pace are more decisive than post position at that distance. The turf course at EVD tends to be fair from a post position standpoint, though inside posts on the rail can be advantageous in a field that lacks a clear pace setter.

RACE 1 — Post 6:30 PM — 1320f | D | C | Clm 10000n3l | BUN | Purse $19,000

Ten horses go to the gate in this six-furlong dirt claiming race for horses that have not won three races lifetime. The $10,000 claiming tag filters out the better horses on the grounds, and the n3l condition means this group is still developing. This is a wide-open affair with pace likely coming from multiple directions.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

With Bandido Deal (8) carrying the morning line favoritism at 2-1 and figures to be among the speed, and El Dan (4) also showing early foot tendencies, this race could develop into a contested pace scenario early. Doolgaroux (5) with Harry Hernandez aboard has the tactical speed to sit just off the early pressure. If two or more horses battle through the opening fractions, the door opens for a closer or stalker to sweep past a tiring field. Gabe's Possum (7) at 4-1 with Kevin Roman is worth noting as a horse that could benefit from a contested pace up front.

Key Contenders

Bandido Deal (8) is the morning line choice at 2-1 with C.J. McMahon in the saddle for trainer William Bret Calhoun. The Calhoun barn is a solid claiming operation at Evangeline and targets these lower-level n3l fields with purpose. McMahon is one of the more reliable riders in the colony, and the outside post of 8 in a sprint is not prohibitive if the horse breaks alertly. At 2-1, the price reflects a horse that has been competitive at this level.

Gabe's Possum (7) at 4-1 with Kevin Roman for trainer Antonio Alberto is another legitimate contender. The Alberto barn has been active and competitive at EVD, and Gabe's Possum (7) at 4-1 represents solid value if this horse has been working well heading into tonight. Roman is a capable EVD colony rider who knows the track well.

Secondary Choices

El Dan (4) at 5-1 with Jansen Melancon for trainer Gerard Perron is a strong secondary play. Melancon is the premier jockey at Evangeline on most nights, and his presence on a 5-1 shot is always notable. Perron is a knowledgeable claiming trainer who targets winnable spots. If El Dan (4) can get to the front without being pressured excessively, Melancon's ability to rate a horse could be the difference.

Doolgaroux (5) at 6-1 with Harry Hernandez for trainer Gary J. Husak deserves respect. Husak is an experienced horseman and Hernandez has been riding with confidence. A 6-1 morning line on a horse in a field this competitive represents fair value.

Longshots

My Chulupa (3) at 10-1 for trainer Juan A. Larrosa with Juan P. Vargas is a horse that could outrun the price if form has been consistent. Star Apriority (1) at 12-1 and Final Half (9) at 12-1 with T.L. Pompell for Brett Brinkman are both longshots worth a token inclusion in exotics. Royal Hope (6) at 15-1 with Joel Dominguez for Joseph Foster and Gypsy Squall (2) at 15-1 with Jamison Mudd — the stable companion to Star Apriority (1) — are both deep longshots that would need significant pace collapse to threaten. Coattails (10) at 20-1 with C. Fusilier for Paul Duhon is the longest shot in the field and is best left off tickets.

Selections

Win: El Dan (4) Place: Bandido Deal (8) Show: Gabe's Possum (7)

Betting Strategy: Play El Dan (4) to win with confidence and use in exactas underneath Bandido Deal (8) and Gabe's Possum (7). A trifecta box of El Dan (4), Bandido Deal (8), and Gabe's Possum (7) is the primary exotic play.

RACE 2 — Post 6:57 PM — 1540f | D | C | Clm 12500b | BUN | Purse $20,500

Eight horses contest this one-mile dirt claimer with a $12,500 claiming price and the “b” designation indicating the condition allows for horses to be claimed. This is a slightly higher class level than Race 1, and the purse of $20,500 reflects that. The mile distance favors horses with tactical versatility over pure sprinters.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

Causeway Benny (3) at 2-1 with Carlos Lozada for trainer Justin Jeansonne figures as the likely pace-setter or stalker. Sunday Breeze (2) at 3-1 with Elio Barrera for Paul Duhon will also want to be in a forward position. If both horses press each other through the first half mile of this one-mile test, Prodigy Paradise (4) at 4-1 with Harry Hernandez for Shane Wilson could be the beneficiary as the race sets up for a closer. Our Majestic (5) at 5-1 with C.J. McMahon for Allison Ramsay-Banks is another horse to watch in the stalker role.

Key Contenders

Causeway Benny (3) is the morning line choice at 2-1 and figures prominently. Trainer Justin Jeansonne has a solid record at EVD and Causeway Benny (3) in post 3 with Lozada is a prime setup. The inside post helps avoid traffic in the early going at a mile.

Sunday Breeze (2) at 3-1 for Paul Duhon with Elio Barrera is a well-supported choice. Duhon is a respected EVD trainer who places horses effectively in spots where they can compete, and Barrera is one of the sharper jockeys on the card tonight.

Secondary Choices

Prodigy Paradise (4) at 4-1 with Harry Hernandez for Shane Wilson is a key secondary selection. If the pace develops as projected, a stalker with a late run could sweep past a tiring front end. Our Majestic (5) at 5-1 with McMahon for Ramsay-Banks is a trainer-jockey combination that deserves attention at a mild overlay.

Longshots

Northernreflection (7) at 8-1 with Kevin Roman for Ricky Courville is a horse that could generate some late interest. Myglorybee (8) at 10-1 with T.G. Thornton for Joseph O. Duhon is a deeper longshot but not without some form. Grunt (1) at 12-1 with Junior Inirio for Brett Brinkman is a horse to include in wide trifecta tickets only. Order Up (6) at 15-1 with C. Fusilier for Allen Ray Landry is the longest shot in the field and is best used as a throw-in on superfectas only.

Selections

Win: Causeway Benny (3) Place: Sunday Breeze (2) Show: Prodigy Paradise (4)

Betting Strategy: The 2-1 on Causeway Benny (3) is not a bargain, but the horse appears legitimately the best here. Exactas with Causeway Benny (3) on top of Sunday Breeze (2) and Prodigy Paradise (4) are the core plays. Use Sunday Breeze (2) and Prodigy Paradise (4) underneath for exacta coverage.

RACE 3 — Post 7:24 PM — 1540f | D | M | Md 10000 | BUN | Purse $14,000

Seven maidens go at one mile for a $10,000 maiden claiming tag. The field is small, which makes handicapping cleaner. Coboch (4) at 1-1 is a heavy morning line favorite, which is noteworthy in itself — a horse that opens at even money in a maiden claiming field has something to recommend it strongly.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

With only seven horses and a clear favorite, the pace picture is less contested than in deeper fields. Brock's Boy (6) at 2-1 with Elio Barrera for George Leonard III is the second choice and likely a forwardly placed horse. Midnight Mischief (7) at 4-1 with T.G. Thornton for Joseph O. Duhon could stalk the pace and close. Mo Can Do (5) at 5-1 with Johan Rengifo for Albert Journet Jr. is another pace presence to monitor.

Key Contenders

Coboch (4) at 1-1 with Harry Hernandez for Jonathan Wong is the overwhelming choice. Wong has multiple starters on the card tonight and Coboch (4) is clearly the barn's best hope. The 1-1 morning line suggests the connections have strong confidence in this horse's readiness. Hernandez is the ideal pilot for a short-priced favorite — he's experienced enough to not panic in traffic and capable of winning at any price.

Brock's Boy (6) at 2-1 with Barrera for George Leonard III is the most legitimate threat to Coboch (4). If Coboch (4) disappoints or encounters trouble, Brock's Boy (6) has the morning line support to suggest it could capitalize.

Secondary Choices

Midnight Mischief (7) at 4-1 with Thornton for Joseph O. Duhon is a fair secondary choice in a small field. Mo Can Do (5) at 5-1 with Rengifo is another horse that could outrun the odds if the favorite fails to fire.

Longshots

Sainted (2) at 12-1 with C.R. Rosier for Cardel Cormier is a mid-range longshot in this field. Big Roux (3) at 20-1 with Junior Inirio for Terry Romero is a deep longshot. Sailor Mike (1) at 20-1 with Albert Dussette for Roland Bruno is the longest shot in the field. Both 20-1 horses are best left off tickets unless you are building wide superfecta combinations.

Selections

Win: Coboch (4) Place: Brock's Boy (6) Show: Midnight Mischief (7)

Betting Strategy: At 1-1, Coboch (4) wins are marginal value, but exactas using Coboch (4) over Brock's Boy (6) and Midnight Mischief (7) are the best plays. The reverse exacta — Brock's Boy (6) over Coboch (4) — is a live upset play if you sense the favorite is vulnerable. The short field makes trifectas manageable; box Coboch (4), Brock's Boy (6), and Midnight Mischief (7) for a reasonable cost.

RACE 4 — Post 7:51 PM — 1760f | D | C | Clm 5000n2l | BUN | Purse $11,000

Eleven horses line up for this mile and three-sixteenths test, a demanding route for $5,000 claimers that have not won two races lifetime. The large field and the low claiming price make this one of the most difficult races on the card to handicap. Consecrated (5) at 2-1 with Jansen Melancon for Randy Degeyter Jr. is the morning line favorite.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

With eleven horses at a mile and three-sixteenths, pace dynamics become critical. The outside posts — Asaasy (10) and Pyromania (11) — face a difficult task getting into position early. Consecrated (5) with Melancon will likely be positioned on or near the pace, as will Instamatical (8) with Juan Vargas for Joseph O. Duhon. No Rematch (9) at 3-1 with Isaac Castillo for Juan Sanchez figures to also be forwardly placed. If multiple horses press the pace over the long route, the race sets up for a horse that can sit mid-pack and finish strongly.

Key Contenders

Consecrated (5) at 2-1 is the morning line choice with Melancon, the track's top jockey, aboard for Randy Degeyter Jr. The inside-ish post of 5 in a large field at a route is workable. Degeyter is a trainer who has placed horses with care at the EVD meet, and the Melancon booking speaks to connections' confidence.

No Rematch (9) at 3-1 with Isaac Castillo for Juan Sanchez is the most significant second choice in the field. Castillo is a capable rider and Juan Sanchez has two horses in this race — My Highmoon (3) at 8-1 being the other — which suggests the barn has horses ready to run.

Secondary Choices

Instamatical (8) at 4-1 with Juan Vargas for Joseph O. Duhon is a key secondary play. Duhon is an active trainer at EVD and Instamatical (8) at 4-1 with a capable rider offers value. Traitour (4) at 6-1 with Barrera for George Leonard III is another legitimate secondary contender. Barrera is in good form, and Leonard has been competitive throughout the meet.

Longshots

My Highmoon (3) at 8-1 with Harry Hernandez for Juan Sanchez is a horse to include in exotics at a price. Midnight Streak (7) at 12-1 with Kelvin Arana for Ronnie Averett is a deeper longshot. Asaasy (10) at 12-1 with J. Riquelme for Nason Eschete and Pyromania (11) at 12-1 with Carlos Lozada for Alfonso Balderas are both in difficult posts at this distance. All Saints (6) at 15-1 with Javier Antonio Hernandez for Cesar Govea is a deeper longshot. Prinsipito (1) at 20-1 with Edward Santiago for Raul Quinones and Come On Mulitch (2) at 20-1 with Jose Luis Rodriguez for Isai Gonzalez are both at the outer limits of usefulness and are best left off primary tickets.

Selections

Win: Consecrated (5) Place: No Rematch (9) Show: Instamatical (8)

Betting Strategy: Consecrated (5) with Melancon is the play, but the large field makes exactas and trifectas the best approach. Key Consecrated (5) on top with No Rematch (9) and Instamatical (8) underneath. A trifecta using Consecrated (5) over No Rematch (9) and Instamatical (8) with Traitour (4) rounding out fourth is a manageable and logical wager.

RACE 5 — Post 8:18 PM — 1540f | D | C | Clm 5000n2y | CUN | Purse $12,000

Twelve horses compete in this one-mile $5,000 claiming race for horses that have not won two races within the past year. The CUN designation and the n2y condition indicate this field has horses that may have won previously but whose recent form has declined. Soul Coaxing (9) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite with Joel Dominguez for trainer Juan Munoz Cano.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

With twelve horses in a one-mile race, early positioning will be critical. Soul Coaxing (9) at 2-1 — despite the wide post — will have a jockey who will look to find a comfortable position in mid-pack. Kingscote (4) at 4-1 with Harry Hernandez for Jonathan Wong will be angling for a forward spot early. Bind Faith (7) at 5-1 with C. Fusilier for Allen Ray Landry is likely a pace presence as well. The wide field at this level often produces moderate fractions, setting up the horse with the best late kick.

Key Contenders

Soul Coaxing (9) at 2-1 for Cano with Dominguez is the morning line choice and deserves respect. A 2-1 favorite in a 12-horse field at this level suggests the horse has recent form or working pattern that has drawn attention. Dominguez is an experienced rider who can navigate wide fields.

Kingscote (4) at 4-1 with Harry Hernandez for Jonathan Wong is the main threat to the favorite. Wong has multiple entries tonight and Kingscote (4) at post 4 is the stable's primary hope in this race. Hernandez's familiarity with Wong's horses is an asset.

Secondary Choices

Bind Faith (7) at 5-1 with Fusilier for Allen Ray Landry is a secondary play with value. Landry has Bind Faith (7) in a position to run well, and 5-1 is fair compensation. Julia's Warrior (1) at 6-1 with C.J. McMahon for Juan Larrosa is another live option — the rail post is workable at a mile if the horse breaks cleanly. Changing Times (6) at 8-1 with Emanuel Nieves for Jonathan Wong is the second Wong entry, and stable companions can run well when the barn has multiple arrows in the quiver.

Longshots

Luni Sima (10) at 12-1 with Javier Antonio Hernandez for Eric Ramaekers has some appeal at the price. Creole Charlie (2) at 20-1 with Juan Vargas for Roland Patt Jr. is a deep longshot. Bello Creedo (5) at 20-1 with Jose Nava-Marin for Henry West is another longshot not expected to threaten. Knockalittlelouder (8) at 15-1 with Erica Murray for John Ney and Keys Included (11) at 20-1 with C.R. Rosier for Cardel Cormier are both at the outer edges of relevance. Infinitesimal (3) at 15-1 for Cesar Govea with Jose Luis Rodriguez and Ooey Gooey Chewy (12) at 15-1 for Govea with Carlos Perez — Govea has two horses in this race — are long shots best used only in deep exotic structures.

Selections

Win: Soul Coaxing (9) Place: Kingscote (4) Show: Bind Faith (7)

Betting Strategy: With twelve horses and a 2-1 favorite, the best approach is to use Soul Coaxing (9) in exactas with multiple horses underneath — Kingscote (4), Bind Faith (7), and Julia's Warrior (1). In trifectas, key Soul Coaxing (9) on top and spread wide underneath with at least four horses. A win bet on Soul Coaxing (9) is also justified given the horse's status as the clear form choice.

RACE 6 — Post 8:46 PM — 1100f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | BUM | Purse $32,000

Eleven maiden fillies and mares go to the grass at 6.5 furlongs for a $32,000 purse in the only turf race on the card. Brisa Veloz (7) at 2-1 and Dreamrosa (5) and Stellar Knickie (4) share the 4-1 morning line co-favoritism. This is a maiden special weight on turf, which often attracts horses with pedigrees designed for the surface.

NOTE: If the turf course is taken off due to rain, this race moves to the main track. Monitor conditions closely before wagering.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

Turf sprints at 6.5 furlongs at Evangeline can be pace-dependent. Brisa Veloz (7) at 2-1 with Jansen Melancon for trainer Antonio Alberto figures as the horse the rest of the field is chasing. Melancon on the morning line favorite on grass is a powerful combination. Stellar Knickie (4) at 4-1 with Jamison Mudd for Kevin Williams and Dreamrosa (5) at 4-1 with Elio Barrera for Jayde Gelner are both co-second choices that figure to be positioned in the early or mid-pack.

Key Contenders

Brisa Veloz (7) at 2-1 is the standout choice in this field. Trainer Antonio Alberto has been competitive throughout the EVD meet, and landing Melancon — arguably the colony's best jockey — on the morning line favorite speaks volumes. On turf, pedigree matters enormously in maiden company, and a horse opening at 2-1 in a maiden special weight grass race has usually been flagged for turf potential by connections with knowledge of the horse's breeding or morning works on the surface.

Dreamrosa (5) at 4-1 with Barrera for Jayde Gelner is a compelling second choice. Barrera has been one of the sharper riders on the EVD circuit, and Gelner is a trainer who has been placing horses effectively.

Stellar Knickie (4) at 4-1 with Jamison Mudd for Kevin Williams shares the co-second choice price and is not to be overlooked. Mudd is a capable EVD rider who knows how to rate horses in turf sprints.

Secondary Choices

Jezebel (10) at 6-1 with Harry Hernandez for Jonathan Wong is a valuable secondary choice. Wong has been one of the more active trainers tonight, and Jezebel (10) with Hernandez at 6-1 could represent overlay value if the Wong barn's grass horses are ready. Sweet Kantha (11) at 10-1 with C.J. McMahon for Allison Ramsay-Banks is another horse that could outrun the price.

Longshots

Tiz A Hero (9) at 12-1 with Emanuel Nieves for Jonathan Wong — the second Wong entry in this race alongside Jezebel (10) — is worth including in wide tickets. R G Goldendream (3) at 15-1 with Juan Vargas for Gary Husak and Starship Yenta (1) at 15-1 with Javier Antonio Hernandez for Eric Ramaekers are both mid-range longshots. Alydan (6) at 20-1 with T.G. Thornton for Desmond Fogarty, Scarlet Heart (2) at 20-1 with Kevin Roman for Samuel Breaux, and Expect A Guitar (8) at 20-1 with Devin Magnon for Rylee Magnon are all deep longshots best used as superfecta fillers. Expect A Guitar (8) is notable as a trainer-jockey family combination with the Magnon barn.

Selections

Win: Brisa Veloz (7) Place: Dreamrosa (5) Show: Jezebel (10)

Betting Strategy: Brisa Veloz (7) at 2-1 is the play, but consider using Dreamrosa (5) and Jezebel (10) in exactas underneath for better value returns. A trifecta key with Brisa Veloz (7) on top over Dreamrosa (5), Stellar Knickie (4), Jezebel (10), and Sweet Kantha (11) gives solid coverage. If the turf comes off, reassess entirely before wagering.

RACE 7 — Post 9:13 PM — 1760f | D | AO | OClm 20000n2x | CUM | Purse $34,000

Seven fillies and mares go a mile and three-sixteenths in this optional claiming event at $20,000, open to horses that have not won two races at the claiming price or above at the stated restrictions. Cincy's Anna (4) and Pharoahs Baby Gyal (7) share the 2-1 morning line co-favoritism. The AO designation and $34,000 purse make this one of the more competitive races on the card.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

In a seven-horse field at a mile and three-sixteenths, pace dynamics favor horses with tactical versatility. Cincy's Anna (4) with Colby Hernandez for Samuel Breaux is likely forwardly placed. Pharoahs Baby Gyal (7) with Julio Ramirez Jr. for Benard Chatters will also want to be in contention early in a relatively small field. Jojo Bean (5) at 5-1 with Melancon for Allen Ray Landry is the type that could sit just off the pace and run them down. Madison Rae (6) at 4-1 with Harry Hernandez for Jonathan Wong figures to be involved throughout.

Key Contenders

Cincy's Anna (4) at 2-1 with Colby Hernandez for Samuel Breaux is a top contender. Breaux has runners on the card throughout tonight, and Cincy's Anna (4) being sent out at co-favoritism in a $34,000 optional claimer suggests the barn has strong confidence. Colby Hernandez is aboard in multiple races tonight and is riding with purpose.

Pharoahs Baby Gyal (7) at 2-1 with Julio Ramirez Jr. for Benard Chatters is the co-equal choice from the rail-to-rail post. Chatters has Wonderrand (3) also in this field at 8-1, and a barn with two horses in a seven-horse field is worth watching. Pharoahs Baby Gyal (7) has the Chatters stable's best shot based on morning line support.

Secondary Choices

Madison Rae (6) at 4-1 with Harry Hernandez for Jonathan Wong is a strong secondary selection. Wong's barn has been busy all card and Madison Rae (6) at 4-1 with Hernandez represents a legitimate live threat to the co-favorites. Jojo Bean (5) at 5-1 with Melancon for Landry is always worth following when Melancon takes a 5-1 shot in a non-sprint. His ability to rate horses in longer routes is a distinct advantage.

Longshots

Wonderrand (3) at 8-1 with Edward Santiago for Benard Chatters is the second Chatters entry and offers some secondary stable connection value. Rosieontheriver (2) at 12-1 with Jamison Mudd for Jervon Broussard is a mid-range longshot. Prima Bella (1) at 15-1 with T.L. Pompell for Brett Brinkman is the longest shot in the field at the rail and is a deep longshot.

Selections

Win: Cincy's Anna (4) Place: Madison Rae (6) Show: Jojo Bean (5)

Betting Strategy: The co-favorite situation at 2-1 makes single-horse win bets on each co-favorite marginally profitable only if you have a strong lean. Consider using Cincy's Anna (4) and Madison Rae (6) in exactas both ways for coverage. A trifecta key using Cincy's Anna (4) on top over Madison Rae (6), Jojo Bean (5), and Pharoahs Baby Gyal (7) is the recommended exotic play.

RACE 8 — Post 9:40 PM — 1320f | D | A | Alw 41000n1x | BUN | Purse $41,000

Ten horses enter this allowance sprint at six furlongs for a $41,000 purse for horses that have not won a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter. This is the feature race of the evening and draws what should be the best field on the card. Meroney (2) at 3-1 with Colby Hernandez for Jonas Gibson and Asthecoldwindblows (1) at 4-1 with Isaac Castillo for Alan Klanfer are the top morning line choices.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

Six furlongs at EVD with allowance horses is typically a fast-pace scenario. Asthecoldwindblows (1) in post 1 with Castillo figures to be sent forward quickly off the rail. Meroney (2) with Colby Hernandez should also be forwardly placed given its morning line position as the top choice. If these two duel each other through the early fractions, Cool Guitar (9) at 5-1 with Joel Dominguez for Antonio Alberto could sweep late. I Got The Hint (4) at 4-1 with Melancon for Allen Ray Landry is another horse that could stalk and pounce.

Key Contenders

Meroney (2) at 3-1 with Colby Hernandez for Jonas Gibson is the narrowest morning line choice in the feature. Gibson is a trainer who targets spots with preparation, and Meroney (2) with the top jockey available at 3-1 suggests a horse with legitimate allowance credentials. At six furlongs, a horse with tactical speed and the ability to sustain it is exactly what wins at this level.

Asthecoldwindblows (1) at 4-1 with Isaac Castillo for Alan Klanfer is a compelling alternative. The rail post in a six-furlong sprint is a significant advantage at EVD, and Castillo is a capable jockey who can use the rail position to maximum effect. Klanfer is a trainer who has success with allowance horses at smaller circuit tracks.

Secondary Choices

I Got The Hint (4) at 4-1 with Melancon for Allen Ray Landry is arguably the most interesting horse on the card at this price. Melancon on a 4-1 shot in the feature event is a situation smart bettors respect. Landry is one of the more active and productive trainers at EVD, and I Got The Hint (4) at equal odds to Asthecoldwindblows (1) could be the night's best value play.

Cool Guitar (9) at 5-1 with Dominguez for Antonio Alberto rounds out the secondary choices. Alberto has a good feel for the EVD allowance ranks and Cool Guitar (9) with a capable closer's jockey could be the horse that catches a tiring pace.

Longshots

Native Red (3) at 8-1 with Carlos Perez for Thomas Lee — Lee has horses in Races 1 and 8 — is worth a look at the price. Yankeestrolgy (5) at 10-1 with Kevin Roman for Samuel Breaux is a mid-level longshot. C F Spunie Style (8) at 12-1 with Carlos Lozada for Hance Robbins Jr. and Seitan (10) at 12-1 with Devin Magnon for Rylee Magnon are both deeper longshots. Kohen The Man (7) at 15-1 with C. Fusilier for Landry — the second Landry entry in this race alongside I Got The Hint (4) — and Ampitup (6) at 20-1 with T.L. Pompell for Eduardo Ramirez are the longest shots in the feature.

Selections

Win: Meroney (2) Place: I Got The Hint (4) Show: Cool Guitar (9)

Betting Strategy: The feature offers the best opportunity for a meaningful exacta score. Meroney (2) on top with I Got The Hint (4) and Asthecoldwindblows (1) underneath is the primary exacta play. Use Cool Guitar (9) as a third horse in trifectas. A win parlay from Race 7 into Race 8 — if Cincy's Anna (4) wins — is an aggressive but rewarding strategy.

RACE 9 — Post 10:07 PM — 1320f | D | C | Clm 5000n3l | BUM | Purse $11,000

Eleven horses close the card in this six-furlong dirt claiming race for horses that have not won three races lifetime. The $5,000 claiming price is the lowest on the card, and these horses reflect that with a wide range of form. Campout (10) at 2-1 with Joel Dominguez for Isai Gonzalez is the morning line favorite.

Race 9

Pace Analysis

In a six-furlong sprint with eleven horses, pace will sort out quickly. Campout (10) from a wide post will need to establish position early or find a clear running lane on the outside. Venice Vibe (7) at 4-1 with Javier Antonio Hernandez for Chasey Deville Pomier and Papiringa (8) at 4-1 with Julio Ramirez Jr. for Rosa Ramirez are the co-second choices and likely pace or pace-stalking horses. Won Bright Light (5) at 5-1 with Elio Barrera for Isai Gonzalez is the second Gonzalez entry — alongside Campout (10) — which bears watching as stables often know which of their horses is the better runner.

Key Contenders

Campout (10) at 2-1 with Dominguez for Gonzalez is the top choice despite the outside post. Dominguez has ridden throughout the card tonight and finishes strong on Campout (10) as the card-closing favorite. Gonzalez sending out two horses in this race — Campout (10) and Won Bright Light (5) — suggests a barn that is active and engaged tonight.

Venice Vibe (7) at 4-1 with Javier Antonio Hernandez for Pomier is a live contender. The 4-1 price in a field of this quality represents value, and Pomier is a trainer capable of developing horses at this claiming level.

Papiringa (8) at 4-1 with Julio Ramirez Jr. for Rosa Ramirez is another legitimate co-second choice. Ramirez's jockey has been active all evening and Papiringa (8) at an equal price to Venice Vibe (7) deserves equal consideration.

Secondary Choices

Won Bright Light (5) at 5-1 with Barrera for Gonzalez is a key secondary play and arguably the most interesting horse in the race given the stable connection to Campout (10). If the barn's intentions are with Won Bright Light (5), the price could be generous. Mor Mor Music (9) at 8-1 with Edward Santiago for Henry West is a secondary choice at value odds.

Longshots

D'busker (1) at 12-1 with Kelvin Arana for Ronnie Averett is a mid-range longshot with rail post advantage in a sprint. Lil Temptation (3) at 15-1 with Emanuel Nieves for Raul Quinones and Bikini Bottom (11) at 15-1 with Johan Rengifo for Vincent Broussard are both deeper longshots. Classy Mimi (6) at 20-1 with C.J. McMahon for Alvin Dussette, This Gray Mischiev (4) at 20-1 with Jamison Mudd for Alvin Dussette — also from the Dussette barn — and Madame Markievicz (2) at 20-1 with Carlos Lozada for Alfonso Balderas are all at the outer limits of usefulness and are best left off primary tickets.

Selections

Win: Campout (10) Place: Venice Vibe (7) Show: Papiringa (8)

Betting Strategy: Campout (10) at 2-1 is a reasonable straight-up win bet to close the card. Use Campout (10) in exactas over Venice Vibe (7), Papiringa (8), and Won Bright Light (5). A trifecta box of Campout (10), Venice Vibe (7), and Papiringa (8) is the primary closing exotic.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Jansen Melancon is the premier jockey at Evangeline Downs and his presence on any horse immediately lifts that horse's prospects. Tonight he rides El Dan (4) in Race 1, Consecrated (5) in Race 4, Brisa Veloz (7) in Race 6, Jojo Bean (5) in Race 7, and I Got The Hint (4) in Race 8. That is a five-race book spread across multiple distances and surfaces, including the grass in Race 6. When Melancon accepts mounts at non-favorite prices — particularly El Dan (4) at 5-1 and I Got The Hint (4) at 4-1 in the feature — those horses command extra attention.

Harry Hernandez is the second-busiest rider on the card tonight with mounts in Races 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. His most important assignment is Coboch (4) in Race 3, where he pilots the even-money favorite, and Madison Rae (6) in Race 7 at 4-1 for the Jonathan Wong barn. Hernandez and Wong have a productive relationship throughout the EVD meet, and their combinations are worth following across multiple races.

Elio Barrera has a strong book tonight, including Sunday Breeze (2) in Race 2, Brock's Boy (6) in Race 3, Traitour (4) in Race 4, and Dreamrosa (5) in Race 6. Barrera is riding with form and is one of the more underrated jockeys in the EVD colony. His association with the George Leonard III barn through Brock's Boy (6) and Traitour (4) is particularly worth tracking.

Colby Hernandez rides in Races 1 and 7, with his most significant mount being Cincy's Anna (4) in Race 7 at 2-1. He has ridden for the Breaux barn throughout the meet and this is a live co-favorite in a $34,000 optional claimer. His Star Apriority (1) mount in Race 1 at 12-1 is a longer shot but the trainer-jockey combination is familiar.

C.J. McMahon has a solid book with Bandido Deal (8) in Race 1, Our Majestic (5) in Race 2, and Julia's Warrior (1) in Race 5. McMahon is reliable in claiming company and his mount on Our Majestic (5) at 5-1 in Race 2 is worth noting.

Joel Dominguez bookends the card, riding Royal Hope (6) in Race 1 and Campout (10) in Race 9, with appearances in Races 5 and 8. His closing assignment aboard Campout (10) is his most important ride of the night.

Carlos Lozada rides Causeway Benny (3) in Race 2 — a key mount — as well as Pyromania (11) in Race 4 and C F Spunie Style (8) in Race 8. If Causeway Benny (3) wins at 2-1, Lozada's night is a success regardless of outcomes elsewhere.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Jonathan Wong is the most active trainer on the card tonight with multiple entries. He saddles Coboch (4) in Race 3 at 1-1 — the most heavily favored horse on the program — as well as Kingscote (4) and Changing Times (6) in Race 5, Jezebel (10) and Tiz A Hero (9) in Race 6, and Madison Rae (6) in Race 7. When a trainer has this many horses working on a single card, it often signals a barn in strong form. The performance of Coboch (4) in Race 3 will be an early barometer.

Allen Ray Landry fields horses in Races 2, 5, 7, and 8 — with two entries in Race 8. Order Up (6) in Race 2 is a longshot, Bind Faith (7) in Race 5 is a live contender, Jojo Bean (5) in Race 7 with Melancon is a legitimate threat, and both I Got The Hint (4) and Kohen The Man (7) run in the feature Race 8. Landry is one of EVD's most productive claiming and allowance trainers, and the Melancon booking on Jojo Bean (5) and I Got The Hint (4) is significant.

Antonio Alberto has Gabe's Possum (7) in Race 1, Brisa Veloz (7) in Race 6 — the morning line turf favorite — and Cool Guitar (9) in Race 8. Alberto landing Melancon on Brisa Veloz (7) at 2-1 in the turf event is the clearest signal of confidence in this barn's preparation.

Joseph O. Duhon has Midnight Mischief (7) in Race 3, Instamatical (8) in Race 4, and Myglorybee (8) in Race 2. The Duhon barn has been active throughout the meet and their entries at reasonable prices — particularly Instamatical (8) at 4-1 — deserve attention.

Benard Chatters runs Wonderrand (3) and Pharoahs Baby Gyal (7) in Race 7. Having two horses in a seven-horse field at a mile and three-sixteenths is an aggressive barn strategy, and Pharoahs Baby Gyal (7) at 2-1 is the barn's stated best chance.

Samuel Breaux has Cincy's Anna (4) in Race 7, Scarlet Heart (2) in Race 6, and Yankeestrolgy (5) in Race 8. His most important entry is Cincy's Anna (4) as the co-favorite in the optional claimer.

Isai Gonzalez runs both Campout (10) and Won Bright Light (5) in the closing Race 9, and also has Come On Mulitch (2) in Race 4. The stable's closing double entry deserves attention.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The headline value play on the card is I Got The Hint (4) in Race 8, the feature allowance sprint. At 4-1 with Jansen Melancon aboard for Allen Ray Landry, this horse is priced identically to Asthecoldwindblows (1) despite Melancon's superior record and the Landry barn's track record. If the morning line holds or I Got The Hint (4) drifts slightly in the wagering pools, the price-to-quality ratio is favorable.

The second-best value play is El Dan (4) in Race 1 at 5-1 with Melancon. A Melancon mount at 5-1 in a sprint with a credible trainer is a situation that experienced EVD handicappers have learned to respect. The race is competitive, but El Dan (4) at morning line odds represents a reasonable overlay compared to Bandido Deal (8) at 2-1.

For the Pick 4 running through Races 6, 7, 8, and 9: In Race 6, use Brisa Veloz (7) as the single if the turf course is firm. If the turf comes off, diversify to at least three horses. In Race 7, spread with Cincy's Anna (4), Madison Rae (6), and Jojo Bean (5) for coverage. In Race 8, use Meroney (2) and I Got The Hint (4) as the primary pair, with Cool Guitar (9) as a backup. In Race 9, single Campout (10) if the pools support it, or spread to Campout (10) and Venice Vibe (7).

A base Pick 4 of Brisa Veloz (7) with Cincy's Anna (4), Madison Rae (6), Jojo Bean (5) with Meroney (2), I Got The Hint (4) with Campout (10) costs a manageable 12 combinations at a $1 base and offers a solid chance at a meaningful score given the mix of favorites and overlays across those four races.

For the Pick 3 in Races 7, 8, and 9, use Cincy's Anna (4) and Madison Rae (6) in Race 7, Meroney (2) and I Got The Hint (4) in Race 8, and Campout (10) and Venice Vibe (7) in Race 9. That is an eight-combination $1 Pick 3 with a potentially rewarding payoff if any of the overlays land.

The best single-race exotic structure on the card is the Race 8 exacta using Meroney (2) over I Got The Hint (4) and I Got The Hint (4) over Meroney (2). The feature race exactas in six-furlong sprints at EVD can return $15 to $30 on modest investments when two logical choices finish in either order.

Coboch (4) in Race 3 at 1-1 is the card's most probable winner but offers no win value. Use Coboch (4) as a single in multi-race exotic sequences — particularly the early Pick 4 or Pick 5 if one is offered — where a certain winner allows you to spread more aggressively in other legs.

Brisa Veloz (7) in Race 6 at 2-1 on turf is the best single on the card from a probability standpoint among the horses that offer some return. A $20 win bet on Brisa Veloz (7) is a defensible aggressive investment if the turf course is in good shape at post time.
