Race Day Overview — Evangeline Downs | August 31, 2026

Evangeline Downs closes out its summer meet on a high note this Sunday evening, presenting an eight-race card anchored by four Louisiana-bred stakes worth $100,000 each. The card features the Au Revoir Stakes (Race 4), the Louisiana Stallion Stakes for fillies (Race 5), the Louisiana Stallion Stakes for colts (Race 7), and the First Lady of Louisiana Stakes (Race 8) — a robust stakes program that makes this one of the most consequential nights on the Evangeline calendar. Supporting those headliners are three allowance races and an maiden special weight opener, giving bettors a full slate of handicapping angles to work with.

The meet has been running at a competitive level, with a core of regular Evangeline conditioners bolstered by a few outside shippers looking to cap their summers with a stakes victory. Allen Ray Landry operates a strong barn at this meet and saddles multiple starters today. Michael J. Maker, one of the premier grass trainers in North America, ships in Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) for the Au Revoir Stakes and will be the horse to beat in that turf route. Brett Brinkman continues to be productive at this meet and has live chances across the card.

The four stakes races skew toward Louisiana-breds, which tightens the talent pool but also creates some productive wagering overlays in the win pools and exotics. The maiden special weight in Race 1 and the two n1x allowances that follow set the early card, with the stakes action dominating from the fourth race forward. Plan your budget accordingly — the back half of this card is where the money should flow.

Weather and Track Conditions — Evangeline Downs | August 31, 2026

August in the Acadiana region of Louisiana means heat, humidity, and the perpetual threat of afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Evangeline Downs, located in Opelousas, sits in the heart of St. Landry Parish, where late-summer dewpoints frequently exceed 70 degrees and daily storm cells are common through the evening racing hours.

Weather modeling for the Opelousas area on August 31 shows partly cloudy skies at post time with temperatures in the low-to-mid 90s cooling slightly into the upper 80s as racing progresses into the evening. A moderate chance of scattered thunderstorms exists for the late afternoon into early evening, which aligns with the card's 5:00 PM first post. If a passing storm cell moves through before racing begins, the main track could show some moisture for the early races before drying as the card progresses. Bettors should monitor any track condition changes closely — a wet-fast or sloppy main track at Evangeline can significantly alter pace dynamics, particularly in the sprint races.

The turf course at Evangeline Downs is a relatively tight circuit that rewards horses with tactical speed or the ability to sit off a pace and accelerate through the turn. The turf has been racing consistently through the summer meet. Firm or good footing is expected for the turf races in Race 4 and Race 6, barring pre-race rainfall. A soft or yielding turf would scramble the form considerably in the Au Revoir Stakes, as it would eliminate some of the speed-favoring angles that currently apply.

Evangeline's main track has been playing with a slight early speed bias through much of the summer meet, consistent with what is typical for this circuit. The 1320-foot sprints (one turn) reward horses that can get a clean break from the gate and establish position along the rail in the early going. In the two-turn routes on dirt (1760 feet), the pace picture is more forgiving and closers have shown the ability to get home.

Track and Post Position Bias

Evangeline Downs is a five-eighths-mile oval with a relatively tight turn radius, which puts a premium on early speed and inside positioning in sprints. Historically, the one and two posts in sprint races at Evangeline offer an efficiency advantage, while outside posts beyond six or seven can be costly in terms of ground loss around the turn. In route races, the inside posts can be trappy if a horse gets caught in traffic, and posts three through six tend to produce the most winners over a full season sample.

On the turf course at Evangeline, inside posts are highly advantageous at the 1100-foot distance used in Race 6 due to the short run to the first turn. Horses breaking from posts seven and beyond must be ridden aggressively in the early stages or risk being three to four wide entering the bend, costing significant ground. At the 1760-foot turf route distance in Race 4, the rail is less of an absolute advantage, though the inside still outperforms over a season-long sample.

For today's main-track sprints, expect the pace setters and stalkers to have the best of it if the track is dry and fast. Any moisture in the surface could help closers, as the Evangeline strip tends to play slightly deeper when wet.

RACE 1 — Post 5:00 PM — 1320f | D | S | Maiden Special Weight | Purse $40,000

This is a maiden special weight sprint for fillies and mares going one turn over the Evangeline main track. Nine runners go to post in what projects as a wide-open affair, with the morning line installing Dolabella (POST 6) as the slight favorite and All You (POST 5) as the second choice. The field features a mix of first-time starters and horses with previous maiden experience, making pace projections somewhat uncertain.

Pace Analysis

With a sprint distance of 1320 feet and the Evangeline rail-favoring tendency, early speed will be at a premium. The Red Wicked One (POST 1) from the inside post should be aggressive early under jockey C. Fusilier for trainer Allen Ray Landry. Dolabella (POST 6) figures to show tactical speed as well. The presence of multiple early movers could lead to a contested pace that sets up for a closer or a stalker who can sit just off the heat and pounce in the stretch. All You (POST 5) is likely to work from a stalking trip under T.G. Thornton.

Key Contenders

Dolabella (POST 6) opens as the morning line favorite at 2-1, trained by Lee Thomas and piloted by T.L. Pompell. Thomas has been a steady conditioner on the Evangeline circuit for many seasons and typically sends his horses ready to run. Pompell is a capable hand around this oval. The 2-1 price suggests connections have high regard for this filly's maiden chances, and she deserves respect as the public choice.

All You (POST 5) is trained by William Bret Calhoun, a name that carries considerable weight in Gulf Coast racing. Calhoun runs a professional operation, and horses breaking their maiden for his barn at this level are frequently well-prepared. T.G. Thornton, one of the leading riders at this meet, takes the call. The 3-1 morning line is attractive if Calhoun sends this one out firing.

Secondary Choices

The Red Wicked One (POST 1) has the rail and Allen Ray Landry behind her, two significant advantages at this sprint distance. Fusilier can save ground from post one, and if this filly breaks cleanly, she can dictate the pace or sit comfortably in second. The 4-1 morning line likely underestimates her positional advantage.

Melissa Gale (POST 8) at 5-1 for trainer Joseph O. Duhon with Isaac Castillo aboard represents a fair price. Castillo has been active at this meet and Duhon is competent at placing his runners. Outside post is a concern in the sprint, but if Melissa Gale (POST 8) has genuine speed, she can work her way into contention.

Cairo Empress (POST 9) at 6-1 for trainer David Terre with Harry Hernandez up is the deepest outside post in the field. Distance and post are both challenges, but the 6-1 morning line offers some value if this filly is well-meant.

Longshots

Preach It Sister (POST 2) at 15-1 for trainer Chadwick J. Mouton with Javier Antonio Hernandez riding is a price worth monitoring. If Hernandez can navigate the early traffic and Preach It Sister (POST 2) has any back class, a payday is possible. Kyli's Carlos (POST 3) at 15-1 for Kearney Segura and Edward Santiago is another longshot to watch for price. Bouxjee Roux (POST 4) at 10-1 for trainer Jervon Broussard and Jamison Mudd faces a tough field but is not without a puncher's chance. Bobby's Native One (POST 7) at 20-1 for Randy DeGeyter Jr. and Jansen Melancon is the longest price in the field and likely faces too much quality to factor.

Betting Strategy

This race has a legitimate favorite in Dolabella (POST 6) but the morning line is tight at 2-1 for a maiden special weight. Exacta combinations linking Dolabella (POST 6) and All You (POST 5) back and forth make sense as the foundation. Adding The Red Wicked One (POST 1) as a saver in the exacta and trifecta is worth the extra investment given her positional edge. Avoid building complex structures in Race 1 — save your exotic budget for the stakes races later on the card.

Selections

Win: Dolabella (POST 6) Place: All You (POST 5) Show: The Red Wicked One (POST 1)

RACE 2 — Post 5:27 PM — 1760f | D | A | Allowance n1x | Purse $33,000

An allowance route for fillies and mares going 1760 feet on the main track. This is a non-winners of one race other than maiden or claiming condition, meaning these horses have been placed correctly and may be stepping up in class for the first time. Eight fillies and mares contest this event, with Nomoretanlines (POST 6) installed as the 2-1 morning line choice.

Pace Analysis

The route distance at 1760 feet around two turns at Evangeline sets up as a more patient race. Spare Me (POST 2) and Princess Is Olivia (POST 4) should both show early interest. Nomoretanlines (POST 6), despite being the favorite, may be content to stalk. If Spare Me (POST 2) sets a pressured pace, horses with tactical position mid-pack could benefit. The two-turn format at Evangeline does reward closers more than the sprints, though consistent early position remains important.

Key Contenders

Nomoretanlines (POST 6) at 2-1 for Brett Brinkman with T.L. Pompell aboard is the morning line choice. Brinkman has been one of the more productive trainers at this meet, and Pompell on the favorite is a reliable combination. From post six in a route, Nomoretanlines (POST 6) has enough room to get a clean trip and should rate comfortably. The 2-1 price is fair if the form justifies it.

Spare Me (POST 2) at 3-1 for Alan Klanfer with Emanuel Nieves riding is the main challenger. Klanfer has multiple runners on today's card and is an experienced conditioner. From post two, Spare Me (POST 2) can establish rail position early and control the pace if she desires. Nieves has been solid when given horses with tactical speed.

Princess Is Olivia (POST 4) at 4-1 for trainer Juan Munoz Cano and Carlos Perez makes considerable appeal. Cano places his horses intelligently, and from post four, Princess Is Olivia (POST 4) can sit a comfortable stalking trip. The 4-1 morning line could be generous if this filly has improved.

Secondary Choices

Shesabeast (POST 3) at 5-1 for Eric Ramaekers with Javier Antonio Hernandez is a competitive price. Ramaekers has horses who generally show up prepared, and Hernandez is a live booking. Shesabeast (POST 3) from post three can find a comfortable position just off the pace in this route.

Hard Spirits (POST 5) at 8-1 for Isai V. Gonzalez and Alexander Castillo is worth a look at the price. The Gonzalez barn is active at Evangeline and this filly at 8-1 offers some overlay potential if the pace sets up favorably.

Longshots

Above The World (POST 1) at 10-1 for Alvin J. Romero with Elio J. Barrera from the rail is interesting at the price. Rail in a route is not as punishing as in a sprint, and if this filly can stalk along the inside, she could pop at a big price. No Map Needed (POST 7) at 12-1 for Edith A. Mojica and Jose Luis Rodriguez is a longer shot who needs a pace collapse to factor. Cause We Can (POST 8) at 20-1 for trainer W.J. Zeringue and Julio Ramirez Jr. is the longest price in the field and faces a significant challenge from the outside post.

Betting Strategy

Nomoretanlines (POST 6) at 2-1 is thin on value in the win pool. Look to build exacta structures using Spare Me (POST 2) on top of Nomoretanlines (POST 6), and consider Princess Is Olivia (POST 4) underneath both at the 4-1 price. A trifecta wheel using Nomoretanlines (POST 6) and Spare Me (POST 2) on top with Princess Is Olivia (POST 4), Shesabeast (POST 3), and Above The World (POST 1) rounding out the third spot offers a reasonable cost structure.

Selections

Win: Nomoretanlines (POST 6) Place: Spare Me (POST 2) Show: Princess Is Olivia (POST 4)

RACE 3 — Post 5:54 PM — 1320f | D | A | Allowance n1x | Purse $33,000

A sprint allowance for males going 1320 feet on the main track. Ten horses contest this n1x condition, which typically produces a sharper field than the maiden route that preceded it. Guns (POST 1) opens as the 2-1 morning line choice for the powerful Landry-Fusilier combination, while Flashy Lover (POST 4) and Begforforgiveness (POST 9) share 4-1 billing as co-second choices.

Pace Analysis

With Guns (POST 1) drawing the rail and Fusilier aboard, expect aggressive early fractions. Allen Ray Landry's horses tend to be trained up sharp for their spots, and a front-running effort from the one hole is the path of least resistance. Flashy Lover (POST 4) from Phillip Mark Dison also figures to be forwardly placed. The pace could get genuine in this allowance sprint, which opens the door for a stalker or pace-presser to close. Begforforgiveness (POST 9) from the outside post for Juan Munoz Cano may be asked to make up ground from off the pace.

Key Contenders

Guns (POST 1) at 2-1 for Allen Ray Landry is the clear public choice. Fusilier and Landry have a productive working relationship at this meet, and the rail post in a sprint at Evangeline is a coveted spot. If Guns (POST 1) can break sharply and clear to the front or rail position, he will be very difficult to reel in. The 2-1 price is short but reflects a horse that connections clearly believe belongs.

Flashy Lover (POST 4) at 4-1 for Phillip Mark Dison with Kelvin Arana is a legitimate threat. Dison is a capable trainer who knows this circuit well and has multiple horses on today's card. From post four, Flashy Lover (POST 4) can break cleanly and establish a pressing position. The 4-1 morning line offers fair value if this horse has been working well coming in.

Begforforgiveness (POST 9) at 4-1 for Juan Munoz Cano with Elio J. Barrera is intriguing at a shared second-choice price despite drawing the far outside. Cano ships horses to Evangeline with purpose, and if Begforforgiveness (POST 9) has a legitimate class edge, he can overcome the post. However, in a sprint at this oval, post nine is a significant disadvantage and the horse needs to be exceptional to overcome the ground loss.

Secondary Choices

String Theory (POST 6) at 6-1 for Rylee Magnon with Devin H. Magnon aboard is a family operation that has shown it can compete at this level. The 6-1 price offers value if String Theory (POST 6) has been training well and Magnon can find a patient trip off the speed.

Duke De Vere (POST 3) at 8-1 for Brett Brinkman with T.L. Pompell represents the Brinkman barn which is live on this card. From post three, Duke De Vere (POST 3) can find a spot early without burning too much ground and close into a legitimate trifecta slot.

Fake Smart (POST 8) at 10-1 for Ronnie Ward and Harry Hernandez is a double-digit price in a field where the pace should be brisk. If Fake Smart (POST 8) can find the rail position behind the speed and make one run, the price is attractive. Weitzman (POST 2) at 12-1 for Eric Ramaekers and Javier Antonio Hernandez offers some Ramaekers barn value from a good post.

Longshots

Grand Oracle (POST 7) at 15-1 for Phillip Mark Dison and Misael Alvarez is the second Dison runner, suggesting the trainer prefers Flashy Lover (POST 4) of the two but will not shy away from using Grand Oracle (POST 7) as a legitimate threat. Rocketeightyeight (POST 10) at 15-1 for Sarah Martinez and Isaac Castillo faces a daunting outside post in a sprint and must be considered a genuine longshot. Ripple's Rocket (POST 5) at 20-1 for Sarah Martinez and Juan P. Vargas is the other Martinez trainee and faces a similarly steep challenge.

Betting Strategy

Guns (POST 1) is short but has the profile and position to justify a small win bet. Better value is found in the exactas by pairing Guns (POST 1) on top with Flashy Lover (POST 4) and String Theory (POST 6) underneath. A trifecta structure using Guns (POST 1) on top, Flashy Lover (POST 4) and Begforforgiveness (POST 9) in the middle, and Duke De Vere (POST 3) and String Theory (POST 6) in the third spot covers the likely scenarios well. Given the crowded field of ten, the trifecta will pay reasonably even with the public choice winning.

Selections

Win: Guns (POST 1) Place: Flashy Lover (POST 4) Show: String Theory (POST 6)

RACE 4 — Post 6:21 PM — 1760f | T | N | Au Revoir Stakes | Purse $100,000

The first stakes race of the evening is the Au Revoir Stakes, a 1760-foot turf route open to Louisiana-breds. Eight horses contest this event, with Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) and Wicked As Haggart (POST 8) sharing 2-1 billing as co-morning line choices. This is the marquee turf event of the Evangeline summer meet, and the presence of Michael J. Maker brings outside credibility to the race.

Pace Analysis

The turf route at Evangeline figures to produce an honest tempo. Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) for Maker is typically professionally ridden and will likely sit mid-pack or just off the leaders. Wicked As Haggart (POST 8) from the outside post for Allen Ray Landry will need to either show early speed to find a forward position or settle wide — neither ideal from the eight hole. The pace figures to be set by one of the lesser-regarded runners, giving the class horses a chance to close into the stretch. A Million Moons (POST 6) with Colby J. Hernandez and Good And Stout (POST 7) with Marcelino Pedroza both figure to track the pace.

Key Contenders

Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) at 2-1 represents Michael J. Maker, one of North America's elite grass trainers. Maker ships horses to smaller venues when he believes they have a class advantage, and his presence here sends a strong signal. C.J. McMahon takes the mount from a favorable post position. Maker's turf horses regularly overperform their morning line odds at tracks where his name is not as familiar to the public, but 2-1 is already a reasonable price for a trainer of his caliber. If the turf is firm, Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) is the horse to beat.

Wicked As Haggart (POST 8) at 2-1 for Allen Ray Landry and Jansen Melancon is clearly a top local contender. Landry keeps multiple runners sharp and Melancon is one of the meet's leading jockeys. The outside post is a concern at this distance, and Melancon will need to either get Wicked As Haggart (POST 8) into the clear early or be prepared for a wide trip. The 2-1 morning line is respectable.

Secondary Choices

A Million Moons (POST 6) at 5-1 for Henry B. Johnson Jr. with Colby J. Hernandez is the most intriguing price in the race. From post six on the turf, this horse can find a comfortable mid-pack position and make a sustained rally in the stretch. Johnson is a local conditioner who knows this oval well, and at 5-1 there is genuine overlay potential if A Million Moons (POST 6) has been training sharply.

Good And Stout (POST 7) at 8-1 for Carrol Castille and Marcelino Pedroza is a longer price worth including in exotic structures. Castille is a veteran Evangeline trainer and Pedroza has experience on this turf course. From post seven, the positioning challenge is real, but Good And Stout (POST 7) at 8-1 provides meaningful trifecta value.

Longshots

Star Rock Star (POST 5) at 10-1 for Shane Wilson and Harry Hernandez is a double-digit price that could surface if the pace collapses. Wilson has horses at this meet that can compete, and Hernandez is an active booking. Cosmic Train (POST 1) at 12-1 for Jerry Delhomme and T.G. Thornton draws the rail in a turf route, which is genuinely advantageous at Evangeline's turf course. If Cosmic Train (POST 1) can find a clean path from the inside, the rail saves significant ground and the price is attractive. Southscape (POST 4) at 12-1 for Samuel Breaux with Kris Carmouche is another longshot worth monitoring. Carmouche is a quality rider who sometimes connects on longer-priced horses at smaller venues. Bons Temps Roule (POST 2) at 15-1 for Juan A. Larrosa and Isaac Castillo is a deep longshot but carries a fun name and is not without a chance in a race where the top two choices face post position issues.

Betting Strategy

The Co-2-1 morning line tells you the public sees this as a two-horse race between Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) and Wicked As Haggart (POST 8). The sharp play is to use Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) on top with A Million Moons (POST 6) and Cosmic Train (POST 1) as the value underneath selections. An exacta box of those three costs six units and covers several viable outcomes. For the trifecta, wheel Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) on top, then A Million Moons (POST 6), Wicked As Haggart (POST 8), and Good And Stout (POST 7) in the middle, with the full field underneath. This is a stakes race where the exotics should pay well if either A Million Moons (POST 6) or Good And Stout (POST 7) hits the board.

Selections

Win: Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) Place: A Million Moons (POST 6) Show: Wicked As Haggart (POST 8)

RACE 5 — Post 6:48 PM — 1320f | D | N | Louisiana Stallion Stakes (Fillies) | Purse $100,000

The Louisiana Stallion Stakes for fillies and mares runs at 1320 feet on the main track. Seven runners contest this sprint stakes, with Six String (POST 5) installed as the heavy 1-1 favorite for the Landry barn and Secret Faith (POST 1) as the 2-1 second choice for Jayde J. Gelner.

Pace Analysis

Six String (POST 5) at even money signals a dominant public choice, and T.G. Thornton will likely try to establish a stalking or pressing position from post five. Secret Faith (POST 1) from the rail for Gelner with Kris Carmouche should press forward as well, giving this sprint a two-quality-horse battle for supremacy in the early stages. If both Six String (POST 5) and Secret Faith (POST 1) press each other through quick fractions, Whisper Me A Smile (POST 6) at 5-1 could be the beneficiary. The sprint distance at Evangeline rewards front speed, but a contested early duel can collapse, setting up a closer.

Key Contenders

Six String (POST 5) at 1-1 for Allen Ray Landry with T.G. Thornton is the public's overwhelming choice. Landry has been one of the meet's leading trainers and Six String (POST 5) is clearly his best filly for this spot. Even money is a short price, but the Landry-Thornton combination firing in a stakes race merits respect. The middle post position is workable in a seven-horse field.

Secret Faith (POST 1) at 2-1 for Jayde J. Gelner with Kris Carmouche is the logical main challenger. Gelner is a competent trainer, and drawing the rail in a sprint at Evangeline is a legitimate advantage. Carmouche is a top-tier jockey who can absolutely upend even-money favorites when given a horse with talent and position. This is the primary upset threat.

Secondary Choices

Whisper Me A Smile (POST 6) at 5-1 for Benard Chatters and Julio Ramirez Jr. is the best price among the contenders. If the pace between Six String (POST 5) and Secret Faith (POST 1) gets heated, Whisper Me A Smile (POST 6) tracking just behind them could wear them down in the stretch. Chatters is a local trainer who places his horses well, and 5-1 is a playable overlay in a stakes sprint.

Longshots

She's Magnificent (POST 3) at 10-1 for Kearney Segura with Elio J. Barrera is a double-digit price that should find some attention in exotic structures. Segura's barn has representation today and Barrera is active on the card. Lola And Rose (POST 4) at 12-1 for Ricky Courville with Emanuel Nieves has the outside look of a deeper price and would need a complete pace meltdown to factor. Cava De Oro (POST 7) at 12-1 for Joseph M. Foster with Kevin Roman is outside from the widest post and faces a significant class test. Louisiana Cowgirl (POST 2) at 20-1 for David C. Gomez with Alexander Castillo is the longest price in the field and would need a pace collapse and perfect trip to have any hope.

Betting Strategy

At 1-1, Six String (POST 5) is unplayable in the win pool. The correct approach is to use Six String (POST 5) underneath in exactas while keying Secret Faith (POST 1) on top, generating a significant overlay if Carmouche can steal this race from the rail. An exacta of Secret Faith (POST 1) over Six String (POST 5) at a probable 8-1 or better is the play of the race. Include Whisper Me A Smile (POST 6) in trifecta structures in the third position. For the Pick 4 running through Races 5-8, using both Six String (POST 5) and Secret Faith (POST 1) in the first leg keeps cost manageable while covering both most likely outcomes.

Selections

Win: Secret Faith (POST 1) Place: Six String (POST 5) Show: Whisper Me A Smile (POST 6)

RACE 6 — Post 7:15 PM — 1100f | T | A | Allowance n1x | Purse $41,000

A short turf sprint of 1100 feet for males, contested as an allowance n1x. Eleven runners go to post in what is the largest field of the evening. Crimson Red Road (POST 10) opens as the 2-1 morning line choice for Lee Thomas and Colby J. Hernandez. Archtop (POST 5) and Vitruvius (POST 6) share 4-1 billing as co-second choices.

Pace Analysis

The 1100-foot turf sprint at Evangeline is a chaotic affair due to the very short run to the first turn from the gate. Inside posts are at a premium, and horses breaking from posts eight through eleven face a dangerous early scramble. Crimson Red Road (POST 10) at 2-1 from the far outside is a concern from a pace positioning standpoint — Thomas and Hernandez will need to go very early to find a viable spot or risk being forced five and six wide into the first turn. Soft Hands (POST 1) from the rail for Jerry Delhomme has an obvious path advantage. The pace could be chaotic early, which typically sets up a horse that can find a clean early position and coast around the turn.

Key Contenders

Crimson Red Road (POST 10) at 2-1 is the public choice despite drawing the second-worst post in the field. Thomas has been a consistent conditioner at Evangeline and Colby J. Hernandez is a capable turf jockey. The ability of this horse to overcome post ten in a 1100-foot turf sprint is the central question. If Crimson Red Road (POST 10) has a legitimate class edge, Hernandez may choose to go wide-and-early to secure a forward position, but that costs significant ground.

Archtop (POST 5) at 4-1 for Sam B. David Jr. with T.G. Thornton has the advantage of a middle post in a wide field. David is an experienced conditioner and Thornton is one of the meet's most active and effective riders. Post five in a short turf sprint at Evangeline is workable, allowing Archtop (POST 5) to find a position near the rail after the break. At 4-1, this is a fair morning line price with genuine upside.

Vitruvius (POST 6) at 4-1 for Shane Wilson with Harry Hernandez is the other co-second choice. From post six, Vitruvius (POST 6) faces a similar trip scenario to Archtop (POST 5) — workable but requiring a clean break. Wilson trains turf horses effectively and Hernandez rides them well.

Secondary Choices

Soft Hands (POST 1) at 5-1 for Jerry Delhomme and Marcelino Pedroza has the single best post position in the field for this distance and surface. At 5-1, there is genuine overlay potential here. If Soft Hands (POST 1) has any competitive ability, the rail position in a short turf sprint is worth two lengths before the gate opens. This is a horse that should be higher in the market given the post draw.

Mingling Mo (POST 11) at 6-1 for Ronnie Ward and Carlos Perez has the worst post in the field of eleven. Ward will need this horse to break sharply and angle for the rail, or ride along the outside all the way around the turn, neither of which is ideal. The 6-1 price reflects the post position handicap.

Me Promesa (POST 9) at 10-1 for Alfonso Balderas and Alexander Castillo is a double-digit price from a tough outside post. Balderas is an active Evangeline trainer and if Me Promesa (POST 9) has a strong tactical move, the price is interesting.

Longshots

Flashy Boy (POST 7) at 8-1 for Albin Bonin Jr. and Devin H. Magnon is from a manageable post and could find a trip behind the speed from post seven. Bearcat (POST 8) at 15-1 for Alan Klanfer and Jamison Mudd is a Klanfer runner who draws post eight, which is challenging in this short turf event. Petitfor (POST 4) at 15-1 for Shannon L. Moses and C. Fusilier draws a decent post but faces a quality field. Daddy's Gift (POST 2) at 20-1 for Eduardo Ramirez and Isaac Castillo is from a favorable inside post but is priced as a deep longshot. Leobobanna (POST 3) at 20-1 for Ronnie Averett and Kelvin Arana is a similar long price from a decent inside post.

Betting Strategy

The best play in Race 6 is to take Soft Hands (POST 1) at 5-1, given the rail post is significantly undervalued at that price in a short turf sprint. Use Soft Hands (POST 1) on top in exactas over Archtop (POST 5) and Vitruvius (POST 6). For trifectas, include Crimson Red Road (POST 10) in the mix as the likely public wheel horse. An upset trifecta combination of Soft Hands (POST 1) over Archtop (POST 5) or Vitruvius (POST 6) over Crimson Red Road (POST 10) could return a substantial figure given the public's affection for the morning line favorite.

Selections

Win: Soft Hands (POST 1) Place: Archtop (POST 5) Show: Vitruvius (POST 6)

RACE 7 — Post 7:43 PM — 1320f | D | N | Louisiana Stallion Stakes (Colts) | Purse $100,000

The Louisiana Stallion Stakes for colts and geldings goes 1320 feet on the main track. Nine runners contest this sprint stakes, with El Dinero (POST 2) as the 2-1 morning line choice for Patrick Devereux Jr. and Colby J. Hernandez. Achromedoutcat (POST 3) is the 3-1 second choice for Randy DeGeyter Jr.

Pace Analysis

El Dinero (POST 2) figures to show early speed from post two with Hernandez urging early position. Achromedoutcat (POST 3) for DeGeyter Jr. from post three could also be prominent early, creating a potential duel between the top two choices. He's Just Lucky (POST 5) for Allen Ray Landry and Jansen Melancon will likely stalk the pace. Letmikefigureitout (POST 6) at 4-1 for Alan Klanfer should also find a forward position. If the early fractions are genuine between El Dinero (POST 2) and Achromedoutcat (POST 3), the closers could benefit, but Evangeline sprints often reward the pace setters regardless.

Key Contenders

El Dinero (POST 2) at 2-1 for Patrick Devereux Jr. with Colby J. Hernandez has a morning line that reflects a well-regarded stakes colt. Devereux is active on this circuit and Hernandez is riding well. Post two is excellent for a sprint at Evangeline. If El Dinero (POST 2) can establish the front position cleanly, he will be very tough to pass.

Achromedoutcat (POST 3) at 3-1 for Randy DeGeyter Jr. and C.J. McMahon is the primary challenge. DeGeyter is a capable local trainer and McMahon provides skilled handling. From post three, Achromedoutcat (POST 3) can either press El Dinero (POST 2) or track just behind. The 3-1 morning line is competitive.

Letmikefigureitout (POST 6) at 4-1 for Alan Klanfer and Devin H. Magnon is an attractive price among the legitimate threats. Klanfer is having a productive meet with multiple starters today, and Magnon has been a consistent presence. From post six, Letmikefigureitout (POST 6) should find a comfortable spot off the speed and make one sustained run in the stretch.

Secondary Choices

He's Just Lucky (POST 5) at 5-1 for Allen Ray Landry with Jansen Melancon brings the powerhouse Landry barn into this race. Melancon is one of the meet's top riders and will position He's Just Lucky (POST 5) intelligently. At 5-1, this is a live price for a Landry stakes runner.

Mangum (POST 4) at 8-1 for Jeff Delhomme and Harry Hernandez is a manageable post with a capable jockey. The 8-1 morning line suggests Mangum (POST 4) is not considered a primary threat, but in a stakes sprint, any horse can surface at a price.

Longshots

Clear As A Bele (POST 1) at 10-1 for David Terre and Isaac Castillo draws the rail, which is advantageous in a sprint but the 10-1 morning line suggests limited backing from connections. Carpis (POST 7) at 12-1 for Sam B. David Jr. and Elio J. Barrera is a longer price from a tough post but David's barn can produce surprises. Mr Mo Money (POST 8) at 15-1 for Brett Brinkman and T.L. Pompell is another Brinkman entry at a longer price — the trainer has multiple runners on this card and Mr Mo Money (POST 8) appears to be the lesser of his starters today. Daddy's Code (POST 9) at 20-1 for Cesar Govea and Jose Luis Rodriguez is the longest price in the field from the widest post — a genuine longshot in a competitive stakes sprint.

Betting Strategy

El Dinero (POST 2) at 2-1 is thin to back straight in the win pool, but the exacta and trifecta structures are compelling. Key El Dinero (POST 2) on top with Achromedoutcat (POST 3) and Letmikefigureitout (POST 6) underneath. Add He's Just Lucky (POST 5) as the value insurance piece. A trifecta box of El Dinero (POST 2), Achromedoutcat (POST 3), and Letmikefigureitout (POST 6) at a moderate investment covers the most likely finishing order. For the upside, use He's Just Lucky (POST 5) underneath those three in a Part-Wheel structure to generate a larger trifecta payout if the Landry runner surfaces.

Selections

Win: El Dinero (POST 2) Place: Achromedoutcat (POST 3) Show: Letmikefigureitout (POST 6)

RACE 8 — Post 8:13 PM — 1760f | T | N | First Lady of Louisiana Stakes | Purse $100,000

The finale is the First Lady of Louisiana Stakes, a 1760-foot turf route for fillies and mares. Eight runners go to post, with Highly Wicked (POST 3) installed as the prohibitive 1-1 morning line favorite for Sam B. David Jr. and Marcelino Pedroza. Moonie Pie (POST 8) at 2-1 is the clear second choice, also for Sam B. David Jr. but with Elio J. Barrera.

Pace Analysis

The David barn controlling the top two choices in the morning line is an extraordinary situation. Highly Wicked (POST 3) at 1-1 and Moonie Pie (POST 8) at 2-1 from the same stable gives David and his connections leverage over the wagering pools, but it also means jockeys Pedroza and Barrera will need to work independently for position. Kalil (POST 6) at 4-1 for Jeff Delhomme and T.G. Thornton figures to stalk the pace and make a sustained move in the stretch. The 1760-foot turf route should produce a moderate early pace, with the closers having every opportunity to get involved in the stretch.

Key Contenders

Highly Wicked (POST 3) at 1-1 for Sam B. David Jr. and Marcelino Pedroza is the overwhelming choice. David trains this filly as his top selection in this spot, and the 1-1 morning line reflects strong connections confidence. Pedroza is a capable turf jockey who has been effective on this course. From post three, Highly Wicked (POST 3) can find a comfortable stalking position along the rail and make one authoritative move in the stretch. At 1-1, the value is absent in the win pool.

Moonie Pie (POST 8) at 2-1 also for Sam B. David Jr. with Elio J. Barrera is the trainer's second string. The outside post in a turf route is less punishing than in a sprint, and Barrera is a capable turf rider. If Highly Wicked (POST 3) encounters trouble or underperforms, Moonie Pie (POST 8) is the stable backup. At 2-1, there is some modest value compared to the odds-on favorite.

Kalil (POST 6) at 4-1 for Jeff Delhomme and T.G. Thornton is the primary challenger from outside the David barn. Delhomme has runners on this card all evening and Kalil (POST 6) appears to be his top investment. Thornton is riding consistently well at this meet and the 4-1 price for an experienced conditioner's stakes nominee represents genuine overlay potential if the David runners underperform.

Secondary Choices

Becky'sgottahaveit (POST 7) at 12-1 for Anthony Arey and Colby J. Hernandez is a double-digit price that will attract little public support but offers exotic value. Hernandez has ridden multiple races today and knows the track. Clearly Creeps (POST 5) at 8-1 for Melton Wilson and Emanuel Nieves is a mid-range price that projects as a stalker in this route. Wilson is an Evangeline area conditioner and if Clearly Creeps (POST 5) has improved, the 8-1 is interesting.

Longshots

Diva Beach (POST 1) at 15-1 for William Bret Calhoun and C.J. McMahon draws the inside post in a turf route, which is a significant advantage. The 15-1 morning line is surprising for a Calhoun-trained runner given his reputation. If Diva Beach (POST 1) has been working well, this is a horse worth including in trifecta structures purely for position. Precious Money (POST 4) at 20-1 for Eduardo Ramirez and Harry Hernandez is a deep longshot who needs a complete pace meltdown to factor. Saved By Grace (POST 2) at 20-1 for Juan A. Larrosa and Carlos Perez is similarly priced and would need a major effort to threaten the top choices.

Betting Strategy

When a single trainer controls the 1-1 and 2-1 morning line choices, the play is to beat both with the 4-1 third choice. Ticket Kalil (POST 6) on top over Highly Wicked (POST 3) and Moonie Pie (POST 8) in the exacta — if Thornton can steal this at 4-1, the exacta pays extremely well. For the trifecta, Kalil (POST 6) on top over Highly Wicked (POST 3) and Moonie Pie (POST 8) in the second and third slots gives a comfortable structure. As insurance, reverse the exacta with Highly Wicked (POST 3) on top over Kalil (POST 6). Include Diva Beach (POST 1) in your trifecta structures for the bomb price should the David barn's two-horse stranglehold create false security in the pools.

Selections

Win: Kalil (POST 6) Place: Highly Wicked (POST 3) Show: Moonie Pie (POST 8)

Jockey Notes and Insights

T.G. Thornton is one of the most productive riders on the current Evangeline Downs meet. He has live mounts throughout this card, riding in seven of eight races including the favorites or top choices in Six String (POST 5) in Race 5, Archtop (POST 5) in Race 6, and Kalil (POST 6) in Race 8. When Thornton is aboard a well-regarded horse at a fair price, he consistently delivers. His ability on both dirt and turf makes him one of the most versatile riders on this circuit.

Jansen Melancon has the mount on Wicked As Haggart (POST 8) in the Au Revoir Stakes and He's Just Lucky (POST 5) in the Louisiana Stallion Stakes for colts. Melancon has been a fixture at Evangeline for many seasons and rides this oval as well as anyone. He has a knack for getting maximum effort out of sprint horses and his book today reflects strong support from multiple barns.

Kris Carmouche, who comes in with a national reputation from his work at larger tracks, takes the call on Secret Faith (POST 1) in the Louisiana Stallion Stakes for fillies. Carmouche on an inside post in a stakes sprint is a potent combination. His big-meet experience can be a genuine advantage in a key race situation, and if Secret Faith (POST 1) has the ability to challenge Six String (POST 5), Carmouche will ride her perfectly.

C.J. McMahon handles Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) in the Au Revoir Stakes, giving him one of the marquee mounts of the evening. McMahon's assignment from the Maker barn suggests the trainer trusts him in a stakes environment. He also rides Achromedoutcat (POST 3) in Race 7.

Javier Antonio Hernandez is active on the early card, riding in Races 1, 2, and 3. He is a capable middle-card rider who can find positioning and is particularly useful in route races where he can rate a horse patiently.

Elio J. Barrera rides the prestigious Moonie Pie (POST 8) assignment in the First Lady of Louisiana Stakes, as well as Begforforgiveness (POST 9) in Race 3 and several others across the card. Barrera is a consistent presence at this circuit and Sam B. David Jr. trusting him with the second choice in a $100,000 stakes speaks to their working relationship.

Colby J. Hernandez pilots the Au Revoir stakes runner A Million Moons (POST 6) and the Louisiana Stallion Stakes morning line favorite El Dinero (POST 2), as well as the Race 8 longshot Becky'sgottahaveit (POST 7). His three prominent mounts across the stakes races make him one of the busiest key jockeys on the back half of this card.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Allen Ray Landry is the dominant force at this meet, saddling runners in six of the eight races on the card. He sends out The Red Wicked One (POST 1) in Race 1, Guns (POST 1) in Race 3, Wicked As Haggart (POST 8) in the Au Revoir Stakes, Six String (POST 5) in the Louisiana Stallion Stakes for fillies, He's Just Lucky (POST 5) in the Louisiana Stallion Stakes for colts, and presumably additional runners elsewhere. Landry's heavy presence suggests a barn firing on all cylinders, and bettors should respect any of his horses at fair odds. When a leading circuit trainer saddles this many horses on a single card, watch for overlays among his non-favorites — they often run much better than their odds suggest.

Sam B. David Jr. controls the First Lady of Louisiana Stakes with both Highly Wicked (POST 3) at 1-1 and Moonie Pie (POST 8) at 2-1, while also entering Archtop (POST 5) in Race 6 and Carpis (POST 7) in Race 7. Having the top two choices in a $100,000 stakes is a remarkable position of strength. However, trainers who run multiple entries in a single stakes race sometimes find that their horses interfere with each other in the wagering pools, creating overlay situations for their challengers.

Michael J. Maker's presence at Evangeline Downs with Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) in the Au Revoir Stakes is the most significant outside influence on this card. Maker is one of the elite grass trainers in North America, and his decision to ship to Evangeline for a $100,000 stakes strongly implies he believes Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) has the class to dominate this field. Maker's stakes runners at smaller venues frequently go off at artificially short prices, so 2-1 may actually be reasonable value given his national win percentage.

Brett Brinkman has a productive card with Nomoretanlines (POST 6) in Race 2, Duke De Vere (POST 3) in Race 3, and Mr Mo Money (POST 8) in Race 7. Brinkman has been sharp at this meet and Nomoretanlines (POST 6) as the morning line favorite in Race 2 is his best chance for a headline win early.

Alan Klanfer saddles Spare Me (POST 2) in Race 2, Bearcat (POST 8) in Race 6, and Letmikefigureitout (POST 6) in Race 7. The Race 7 runner at 4-1 in a $100,000 stakes represents his most significant opportunity.

Phillip Mark Dison runs two horses in Race 3 — Flashy Lover (POST 4) and Grand Oracle (POST 7). Trainers who split entries in the same race typically have a preferred choice, and Flashy Lover (POST 4) at 4-1 versus Grand Oracle (POST 7) at 15-1 makes the preference clear. Dison's runners in Race 3 are worth monitoring as a unit.

Jerry Delhomme saddles Cosmic Train (POST 1) in Race 4 and Soft Hands (POST 1) in Race 6. Both draw inside posts, which is significant for Soft Hands (POST 1) in the short turf sprint. The rail post for a Delhomme runner in Race 6 at 5-1 may be one of the best value plays on the card.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The eight-race card at Evangeline on August 31 offers four $100,000 stakes races that should generate robust exotic pools. Here is a race-by-race wagering framework built around value and structure.

The single best value play on the card is Soft Hands (POST 1) in Race 6. The 1100-foot turf sprint gives the rail post an enormous advantage that the 5-1 morning line does not adequately compensate for. With an experienced handler in Jerry Delhomme and a capable jockey in Marcelino Pedroza, this horse is correctly positioned for the most significant positional edge on the card. A moderate win bet here is justified before any exotic construction.

The second-best value play is Secret Faith (POST 1) over Six String (POST 5) in the Race 5 exacta. Six String (POST 5) at 1-1 is essentially unplayable to win, but the exacta of Secret Faith (POST 1) beating Six String (POST 5) should return 8-1 or better given the public's fixation on the favorite. Carmouche from the rail is a legitimate threat to make that price come in.

For the Pick 4 running through Races 5-8, the most cost-efficient structure uses double coverage in Races 5 and 8, where the public will be piling onto short-priced favorites. The suggested Pick 4 ticket covers: Race 5 — Six String (POST 5), Secret Faith (POST 1); Race 6 — Soft Hands (POST 1), Archtop (POST 5), Crimson Red Road (POST 10); Race 7 — El Dinero (POST 2), Achromedoutcat (POST 3), Letmikefigureitout (POST 6); Race 8 — Kalil (POST 6), Highly Wicked (POST 3), Moonie Pie (POST 8). At a $1 base, this 2x3x3x3 ticket costs $54 and covers the most viable outcomes in all four races. If Soft Hands (POST 1) wins Race 6 at 5-1 or better and Kalil (POST 6) upsets in Race 8, the Pick 4 return could be substantial.

For the trifecta in Race 4 (Au Revoir Stakes), the key structure is Boss Of All Bosses (POST 3) on top, A Million Moons (POST 6) and Wicked As Haggart (POST 8) in the second spot, and Good And Stout (POST 7), Cosmic Train (POST 1), and Star Rock Star (POST 5) filling the third. This covers the likely favorite winning while generating meaningful payouts from the mid-price second and third horses.

The trifecta in Race 8 (First Lady of Louisiana Stakes) is best constructed with Kalil (POST 6) on top over all combinations of Highly Wicked (POST 3) and Moonie Pie (POST 8), with Diva Beach (POST 1) and Clearly Creeps (POST 5) adding depth to the third slot. A David stable one-two finish at 1-1 and 2-1 pays virtually nothing in the trifecta, making the Delhomme runner at 4-1 the value cornerstone of the entire closing sequence.

Exotic bettors who prefer to stay light on the early card and build up for the stakes should note that Races 5, 7, and 8 constitute an excellent three-race sequence with competitive favorites and legitimate price alternatives. A $0.50 base Pick 3 running through those three races is a high-value structure at a manageable cost, and the payouts will be significant any time a 4-1, 5-1, or longer horse defeats the heavy chalk in any of those legs.
