Del Mar Handicapper Selections — Sunday, August 30, 2026

Fast main track, firm-to-good turf following Saturday's Grade 2. Modest speed bias on dirt favoring inside posts in sprints; turf plays fair with tactical speed rewarded in the stretch. Sadler and Baffert dominate the book; Hernandez and Rosario are the key riders throughout.

Race 1 — Optional Claiming $50,000 | 1 1/16M Dirt

Howie's Law (1) is the clear single from the rail in a small field — if he controls the pace on his own terms, he's very hard to beat. Kid Charlemagne (3) is the most logical challenger, with Fumano's Magic (5) worth including in exacta coverage as a pace presser with upside.

Race 2 — Maiden Special Weight | 1 1/16M Straight Turf

Chiseled In Stone (3) is the stable favorite with a clean middle post on the straight course at a justified 2-1. First Time Listing (1) and Bel Air Blintzcess (2) are the best secondary options; Hallagrey (6) at 12-1 with Van Dyke is the most interesting price play in a wide-open 13-horse field.

Race 3 — Claiming $12,500 | 1M Dirt

Miz Clubcali (8) is the clear top selection in the cheapest race on the card, with Ro Town (6) as the main pace threat and Lady Gregory (3) rounding out the trifecta. At this claiming level, keep investments modest and cover Chasing Kat (1) in wider structures.

Race 4 — Allowance Optional Claiming | 1 3/8M Turf

Cortina D'amprezzo (4) is the most straightforward bet of the turf races — D'Amato in a turf route at Del Mar at 3-1 is historically reliable. Liberation (2) on the inside rail is the main threat, with Run With Liberty (6) and Struck By Her (7) as secondary coverage; Full Moon Tonight (1) at 8-1 from the rail is a viable price inclusion.

Race 5 — Maiden Special Weight | 1M Dirt Fillies

Her Strut (7) and Sono Veloce (8) share favoritism in a genuinely competitive ten-filly field with no clear single. Beautiful Dawn (4) at 6-1 with Rosario is the best value play on the card — use her confidently in exactas under the co-favorites, with Not So Merry Mary (1) as trifecta depth.

Race 6 — Claiming $32,000 | 1 1/16M Turf

Code Duello (9) at 2-1 is a dominant market selection that suggests significant class advantage over this field despite the outside post. Gazon (7) and Daniel's Magic (4) are the best secondary options; Gregory's Pride (8) at 8-1 and Agency (1) at 12-1 with Van Dyke are the most interesting price plays.

Race 7 — Grade 3 Terry Pine Stakes | 1 1/16M Dirt Fillies — $150,000

Rabeeba (3) is the premier single bet of the entire card — Baffert in a Grade 3 at Del Mar with a clean middle post is the clearest play on Sunday. She's No Quant (2) at 3-1 is a legitimate value alternative, with Mohaven (5) the best non-Baffert/Freeman threat; Wolf Hill (7) with Rosario and Bank Shot (1) as front-end speed are viable trifecta fillers.

Race 8 — Maiden Special Weight | 1 3/8M Turf

Janz Joy (6) is the top selection with Glatt's exceptional turf maiden record driving confidence at 4-1. Marla Hooch (4) at 5-1 is equally compelling given D'Amato's turf dominance, and Impressionistic (9) with Rosario at 5-1 completes a strong top three; Zuzu's Classic Gal (7) as the second Glatt entry and First Light (1) at 8-1 are worth including in trifecta coverage.

Race 9 — Allowance Optional Claiming $100,000 | 1M Dirt

Privman (7) is the top Baffert selection with Hernandez aboard, but Mirahmadi (9) at 4-1 with Mike Smith cannot be dismissed — when Baffert splits Smith and Hernandez, both horses are live. The Goat (5) with Rosario and Lyell's Song (6) are the best non-Baffert upset candidates if the stablemates burn each other up.

Race 10 — Optional Claiming $50,000 | 1 3/8M Turf

Midway Lane (1) is the strongest closer to the card — Sadler on the rail at 1 3/8 miles on turf is a structural advantage that is hard to argue against at 3-1. Call Me Sir (8) with Rosario is the best value alternative, with Beyond Stoked (4) and Joejoe Go (10) rounding out the key trifecta coverage in a deep 13-horse field.
