Track Surface & Bias

Century Mile's dirt (D) surface is a one-mile oval that generally plays fair to mildly speed-favoring, especially when listed fast, with an inherent edge to forwardly placed runners and stalkers over deep closers in most sprint configurations. Inside-to-middle posts tend to be preferred in sprints, as runners drawn outside must use more early energy to clear and secure position into the first turn on this relatively long stretch mile layout. In routes, post bias is typically more neutral, but tactical speed remains an asset, as horses able to secure a stalking trip off the rail and make a sustained move around the far turn usually finish best.

Handicapper’s Edge

Under today's expected dirt profile, upgrade horses with tactical speed and the ability to sit close to the pace rather than deep one-run closers, particularly in sprints. Give slight preference to inside and middle posts on the dirt, and be cautious about overcommitting to wide-drawn runners who need to work out a trip or rely on a hot meltdown pace to be effective.
