Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Churchill Downs, May 22, 2026
Track Surface & Bias
With the spring meet in full swing and the main track typically maintained fast absent prolonged rain, expect a fair-to-mildly speed-favoring dirt surface. Historically at Churchill under dry or drying conditions, tactical speed has an advantage at most sprint distances, with forwardly placed runners from middle posts (4–8) often securing the best trips; deep closers need an honest or pressured pace to get involved. In two-turn dirt routes, inside-to-mid posts tend to be preferred, and stalking/pressing types sitting just off the pace usually finish strongest.
On the turf, Churchill commonly plays kind to horses with a strong late kick when the ground is firm, but inside position and saving ground are still important, especially in larger fields. Mild rail movements and a firm or good course often tilt things slightly toward pace-tractable runners who can secure position early and then quicken, rather than true one-run closers dropping far out the back.
Handicapper’s Edge
Given the typical Churchill profile, upgrade dirt runners with tactical speed who can secure position early without needing the outright lead, especially from middle posts. On turf, lean toward horses with tactical positioning plus a proven turn of foot, while downgrading runners who are consistently pace-compromised or dependent on extreme racing luck from far back. Overall, weight trip potential and post position a bit more heavily than usual, especially in full fields on both dirt and turf.
