Track Surface & Bias

Recent cards at Del Mar have featured a fast dirt track (D) and firm turf (T), with the main track consistently labeled Fast and the lawn Firm in official charts and race-day notes. Under these typical summer seaside conditions, the dirt generally plays quick but reasonably fair, with a slight historical lean toward forwardly placed runners who can secure position early and stay within striking range turning for home. On the firm turf, the course tends to be true and relatively fair, but speed and pace-pressers are often favored in shorter sprints, while stalkers sitting just off the pace can enjoy optimal trips in routes where the stretch run and tighter turns reward tactical positioning over deep-closing styles.

Inside and middle posts are usually acceptable on both surfaces, with extreme outside draws at some sprint distances on dirt posing more risk due to ground loss and the need to clear traffic quickly.
