Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Del Mar Racetrack, August 21, 2026

Weather Forecast

Conditions at Del Mar today are expected to be mostly clear and dry, with afternoon temperatures around 70–78°F (21–26°C) and cooler readings in the morning and evening. Precipitation chances are near 0–10%, with no significant hazardous weather indicated for the coastal Del Mar area. Winds should run as a light to moderate onshore breeze from the west–west/southwest, generally in the 5–15 mph range through the afternoon.

Track Surface & Bias

With dry, consistent summer weather and a light onshore breeze, the dirt (D) surface at Del Mar should play close to fair, but historically tends to give a mild edge to stalkers and pace-pressers who sit just off the lead and finish strongly turning for home. Sustained front-runners can still wire fields in shorter sprints, but deeper closers often need a strong pace meltdown to overcome the relatively tight turns and consistent footing. On the turf (T), Del Mar's firm summer ground traditionally favors inside to mid posts and tactical runners—horses saving ground and producing a well-timed move from just behind the pace generally perform better than wide, rallying closers.

Handicapper’s Edge

Given the expected firm, dry dirt and turf, wagering approaches should lean toward tactical speed rather than extreme front-end speed or deep closers, especially in routes where ground loss and trip efficiency are critical. On turf, give extra consideration to horses drawn inside or middle gates with proven ability to sit handy and quicken, and on dirt, prioritize runners with strong pace-pressing profiles who have previously handled Del Mar's summer surface.
