Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Del Mar Racetrack, July 17, 2026
Weather Forecast
Forecasts for Del Mar, CA call for partly cloudy conditions with a high around the upper 70s°F and lows in the upper 60s°F. Winds are expected from the south to south-southwest around 10–15 mph through the afternoon and early evening. Precipitation chances are minimal, with no significant rain expected during racing hours.
Track Surface & Bias
With dry, seasonable coastal weather and moderate S–SSW winds, the dirt (D) track at Del Mar should play fair to slightly speed-favoring, especially in sprints. Historically on similar summer conditions, front-runners and pace-pressers hold an advantage on the dirt, particularly from inside to mid posts, while deep closers generally need a strong early pace to be fully effective.
The turf (T) course under dry, temperate conditions typically plays honest to mildly favoring stalkers, with mid-pack runners and tactical speed performing well when the rail is at standard settings. Inside and mid draws are usually acceptable, though extreme inside posts can be slightly disadvantaged in some longer routes if the pace is soft, making versatile, positionally flexible runners attractive on the grass.
Handicapper’s Edge
On today's dirt races, give a modest upgrade to horses with early speed or pressing styles, particularly those drawn inside to middle who can secure position without working too hard into the S–SSW head/crosswinds. On turf, lean toward tactical stalkers who can sit just off the pace and produce a sustained run, rather than deep closers reliant on an unusual pace meltdown.
