Del Mar's main dirt track in early September historically plays fast and firm, favoring horses with early speed and inside post positions. The rail tends to be the preferred path as the meet wears on through summer, and by early September the inside lanes are typically well-compacted. Front-runners and pace-pressers carrying efficient early fractions have a distinct advantage, particularly around the tight Del Mar turns. Posts 1 through 5 have historically produced a disproportionate share of winners under these late-summer conditions, and horses that can secure a ground-saving trip near the lead are especially well-positioned.

Track Surface & Bias — Turf

The Del Mar turf course in early September is generally at or near its best condition for the meet — firm to good, with consistent footing throughout. The course plays fair to all running styles, though late-season wear near the inside rail can push jockeys toward the two- to four-path. Closers with tactical speed tend to thrive on the turf at Del Mar, particularly in routes where the pace tends to compress in the stretch.
