Track Surface & Bias

On the dirt (D), recent patterns at Delaware Park point to a fast to good surface with a mild speed and tactical-speed bias, especially when the track remains dry. Inside to mid posts have tended to be most efficient, giving an edge to front-runners and pressers who secure position early and avoid wide, ground-losing trips. Deep closers generally need an above-average early pace to fully capitalize, particularly in larger fields where traffic can be an issue.

On the turf (T), footing is typically firm to good in this part of the meet, favoring stalkers and mid-pack runners who can save ground and produce a controlled, well-timed finish. There is usually only a modest preference for inside-to-middle draws, with wide posts more vulnerable if the pace is moderate and trips become too wide into the far turn. Pure late-running closers on turf can still win but tend to rely on a more honest or demanding early tempo to offset the positional advantage of those sitting closer.

Handicapper’s Edge

On dirt, lean toward horses with genuine early speed or tactical speed, and upgrade runners drawn inside to middle who can secure forward position without expending excessive energy; be more demanding of deep closers unless the race projects a strong contested pace. On turf, give extra credit to horses that consistently stalk within 2–4 lengths of the lead, save ground, and show a reliable turn of foot, while slightly downgrading runners dependent on a wide, last-to-first rally.
