Pick Pony Track Condition Report — ELK, September 5, 2026

Weather Forecast

Saturday at ELK looks hot and dry, with afternoon temperatures in the low 100s°F and little to no rain in the forecast. Winds are expected to be southerly around 10–20 mph, with only a low chance of isolated thunderstorms.

Track Surface & Bias

With the card on dirt (D) and a likely fast, tightly packed surface, ELK should lean speed-favoring. The main edge typically goes to front-runners and pace-pressing stalkers, especially those breaking well and securing position before the first turn; inside to mid posts are usually the most efficient trips under these conditions. Closers can still make an impact, but they generally need a contested pace and a cleaner inside flow than usual to sustain a late run.

Handicapper’s Edge

This setup usually rewards horses with early tactical speed and the ability to stay close without using too much energy. Wider-drawn runners may need more intent out of the gate, while deep closers look best only if the pace becomes more demanding than expected.
