Track Surface & Bias

With dirt (D) in play at FAR and midsummer conditions prevailing in the upper Midwest, expect a generally fair but slightly speed-favoring surface, especially in the early races. Historically, similar profiles at North Central dirt ovals tilt mildly toward forwardly placed runners—horses that can secure position on or just off the lead—while deep closers typically need an honest or contested pace to get fully involved late.

Inside-to-middle posts are usually a plus on a standard, well-harrowed dirt track, as they shorten the run into the first turn and make it easier for tactical speed types to secure rail or pocket trips. Wide-drawn runners can still win but often must expend more early energy to clear or risk being hung wide, which is a disadvantage if the track is playing even slightly toward speed.

Handicapper’s Edge

Today's dirt profile should place a premium on early position and tactical speed, so upgrade horses with proven gate speed, good early pace figures, or a history of holding form on “fair to mildly speed-favoring” dirt. In multi-race wagers, lean slightly toward inside and mid-gate posts with pace advantage, and be cautious about over-betting one-run closers who are drawn wide and dependent on a pace collapse to reach contention.
