Track Surface & Bias

Hawthorne's dirt (D) track historically plays as a fair-to-mildly speed-favoring surface, especially when it is dry to lightly moisture-retentive, with early pace and stalking trips from the inside to middle posts typically holding an edge. Long stretch and relatively tight turns mean pressers and stalkers who can save ground and tip out in the lane often finish strongly, while deep closers usually need an above-average pace meltdown to get up. On the turf (T), the configuration and sweeping turns generally reward stalkers and mid-pack runners drawn toward the middle posts, as outside closers can lose too much ground and inside speed can get leg-weary late if pressured.

Handicapper’s Edge

Given these tendencies, upgrade horses on dirt with tactical speed breaking from posts 1–7 who have shown the ability to finish, rather than pure need-the-lead types or deep one-run closers. On the turf, give extra consideration to pace-versatile stalkers drawn away from the far inside and far outside, and be cautious about overcommitting to closers who are overly dependent on an extreme early pace scenario.
