Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Hawthorne Race Course, May 17, 2026

Track Surface & Bias

With a standard spring profile and no prolonged soaking in the lead-up, the Hawthorne dirt (D) is likely to start the card “fast” or close to it, playing fairly through the first couple of races. Historically under these conditions, forwardly placed horses and pace-pressers from middle posts (4–7) tend to hold a slight edge, especially in the two‑turn routes, while deep closers generally need an above‑average early tempo to get involved. If any drying or wind picks up through the afternoon, expect the inside paths to tighten and improve, subtly upgrading rail‑saving trips and tactical speed later in the day.

The turf (T), assuming a reasonably firm to “good” profile, typically rewards efficient stalk-and-pounce types who can secure position by the first turn rather than pure wire speed or last‑to‑first closers. Inside and mid‑gate draws are usually preferred at most Hawthorne turf distances, as wide trips around the turns can be costly; late runners are most effective when fields are large enough to guarantee an honest, contested pace up front.

Handicapper’s Edge

Lean slightly toward horses with tactical speed on both dirt and turf, especially those drawn inside to mid‑gate who have shown the ability to sit just off the pace and finish. Be prepared to adjust quickly: if early races show clear strength from the rail or from a particular running style (e.g., front‑end dominance on dirt or outside rallying on turf), upgrade similar profiles as the card progresses and downgrade runners needing a dramatically different trip than what the surface is actually allowing.
