Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Lone Star Park, June 12, 2026
Track Surface & Bias
Dirt has been playing fast to honest over the past week, with the main track officially listed as Good to Fast in recent cards, and racing completed on dirt even when turf was taken off. Under these conditions at Lone Star, there is typically a mild inside-to-middle lane advantage, with forward or pace-pressing types (front-runners and stalkers within 2–3 lengths of the lead) holding a consistent edge, especially in sprints. Historically, route races on a dry or drying-out dirt strip here still tend to favor tactical speed, but late closers can be more effective when the surface retains a bit of moisture and times slow slightly.
The turf course has recently come off the grass on some days, indicating softer footing and a preference for safety, but when in use after rain, Lone Star's turf has often tilted toward stalkers and mid-pack runners who can quicken turning for home rather than need-the-lead types. Wide, sweeping moves can be effective on the outer lanes when the turf has some cut, though inside posts remain valuable for saving ground into the first turn in routes.
Handicapper’s Edge
On dirt, lean toward horses with tactical speed drawn inside to middle posts, especially in sprints, and downgrade deep closers who rely on extreme late kicks. On turf, give extra credit to stalkers with a sustained turn of foot and riders who time their move from the second flight, rather than committed front-runners who may face pressure on less-than-firm footing.
