Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Lone Star Park, May 17, 2026

Track Surface & Bias

With recent moisture in the region and evidence of off-tracks at the meet (sloppy/muddy main, turf off earlier in the week), expect the dirt (D) to start with some residual moisture and tighten up as the card progresses. Historically at Lone Star, a damp-to-drying main track tends to favor forwardly placed runners and pressers, particularly from middle posts, while deep closers often need a strong and contested pace to get involved. The turf (T), when rated firm to good after recent rain, typically plays fairly but can give a slight edge to tactical speed and stalkers who secure inside or saving-ground trips into the far turn.

Handicapper’s Edge

On the dirt, upgrade horses with proven speed or pressing style who have handled wet or “off” tracks, and be cautious about relying on one-run closers in routes unless there is clear, abundant pace signed on. On turf, give extra credit to runners with tactical speed and demonstrated ability to quicken off the turn, especially those drawn well enough to avoid being parked wide into both turns. As conditions evolve during the card, watch early races closely for any emerging inside/outside lane preference and adjust your wagering emphasis on pace profiles accordingly.
