Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Louisiana Downs, May 18, 2026
Weather Forecast
Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected through the afternoon with high temperatures in the low-to-mid 80s°F. Rain chances appear low to modest, generally in the 10–25% range, with only spotty, light showers possible. Winds should be light to moderate, roughly 6–12 mph, favoring an easterly to southeasterly direction.
Track Surface & Bias
On a dry or only slightly damp day, the Louisiana Downs dirt (D) surface typically plays fair to mildly speed-favoring, with a slight edge to horses showing tactical speed who can secure position early without engaging in prolonged duels. Inside and middle posts usually perform well at common sprint and middle distances, while deep closers often need a contested pace to fully reach their best. The turf (T) course, when firm to good, tends to reward stalking and tracking types sitting just off the leaders, with outside/mid-pack trips often proving advantageous in avoiding traffic and saving enough for the stretch.
Handicapper’s Edge
Under these conditions, give a small preference to pace-pressers and versatile types on dirt who can sit just off the speed and finish, rather than need-the-lead rockets or extreme closers. On turf, upgrade runners with a proven turn of foot who can settle mid-pack and tip out in the lane, especially those drawn in posts that allow a clean stalking trip without being parked wide throughout.
