Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Monmouth Park, May 24, 2026
Track Surface & Bias
With rain impacting the Mid-Atlantic over Memorial Day weekend and Monmouth having already shifted turf stakes due to prolonged wet conditions, expect the main track to be on the wet side (sealed or harrowed off a wet surface) early, gradually drying if the weather cooperates. Historically at Monmouth, a wet or sealed dirt track tends to favor inside to middle posts and forwardly placed runners — speed and pace-pressers often carry better, while deep closers can struggle to make up significant ground. If the turf is in use at all, give an edge to tactical speed and horses drawn in the middle posts, as soft or yielding ground at Monmouth often dulls the late kick of deep closers and magnifies ground loss for wide trips.
Handicapper’s Edge
On the dirt, upgrade horses with proven wet-track form, early speed, and inside-to-middle draws, and be cautious about overrating one-run closers. For any turf races that remain on the grass, lean toward versatile stalkers with prior success on less-than-firm ground and avoid horses that need firm footing and a big, sweeping late run to be effective.
