Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Thistledown Racetrack, July 13, 2026

Track Surface & Bias

Thistledown's dirt (D) surface typically plays fair-to-mildly speed-favoring when listed as fast, with a historical lean toward front-runners and pace-pressing stalkers holding an advantage, especially in sprints. Inside to middle posts (roughly posts 1–6) usually perform best at common sprint distances, while routes tend to even out slightly, rewarding tactical speed that can secure position into the first turn. When the surface tightens up after dry, settled weather, late-running closers often need an honest early pace or a pace collapse to get involved, making trip and race shape particularly important at this oval.

Handicapper’s Edge

Under a typical fast, speed-favoring Thistledown dirt, it is generally wise to upgrade horses with proven early foot and the ability to secure inside or forward position, particularly in dash-type events. In routes, give extra credit to runners with tactical speed who can sit just off the pace and avoid wide, ground-losing trips, while being more skeptical of deep closers who rely on multiple factors going their way.
