Prairie Meadows Race Day Overview — May 18, 2026

Prairie Meadows Racetrack in Altoona, Iowa kicks off its Monday evening card with nine races spread across a full slate of conditions ranging from maiden special weight events to allowance and claiming contests. The card features a healthy mix of route and sprint distances on the main dirt oval, with the feature races being a pair of $29,000–$40,252 allowance sprints in Races 4 and 6. The biggest purse of the night belongs to Race 6, a $40,252 allowance affair for fillies and mares, which draws a competitive field of twelve. The maiden special weight in Race 3 carries the richest non-restricted purse at $35,000 and should draw strong interest from bettors looking for future stakes-caliber horses developing through the Iowa circuit.

Trainer Jon Arnett is particularly active on today's card, saddling horses in Races 2, 4, and 6, while the Tracy Tanner barn has horses entered in Races 4, 5, 6, and 7 — giving both operations significant leverage on the nightly Pick 4 and Pick 5 sequences. The Birzer family operation, with trainer Bonnie Birzer and jockey A.E. Birzer, is well represented throughout the card. Kelli Martinez fields three horses in Race 6 alone, a barn move that demands attention when a trainer saddles multiple runners in the same race.

Jockey O. Mojica carries one of the heavier books on the card and figures to be a factor in multiple races. K.S. Tohill, who regularly ranks among Prairie Meadows' leading riders, has live mounts in Races 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7. Alfredo Triana Jr. is equally active and brings strong local knowledge to his mounts throughout the evening.

Weather and Track Conditions

Prairie Meadows sits in the Des Moines metro area where late-spring weather in mid-May can be variable. For the evening of May 18, 2026, conditions in Altoona are expected to be partly cloudy with temperatures in the low-to-mid 60s at post time for the first race at 5:00 PM local time. Winds are expected to be light out of the south-southwest at 8–12 mph, which should have minimal impact on race times. No significant precipitation is forecast for the afternoon or evening, and the track is expected to be listed as fast for the main dirt surface throughout the card.

Prairie Meadows maintains its main track well, and a fast, dry main track is the typical condition for a mid-May Monday evening when no weekend rain events have occurred. For planning purposes, a fast track is the working assumption for tonight's handicapping.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Prairie Meadows is a one-mile oval with a tight configuration that traditionally favors speed horses, particularly in sprints up to the 1210-foot (approximately six-furlong equivalent) distance. The track has a well-documented bias toward horses that can get the early lead or settle just off the pace in the two-path. Deep closers face a particularly tough task at PRM in sprint distances, as the stretch run does not afford enough ground for horses that spot the leaders more than three or four lengths at the half-mile pole.

In route races at 1320 feet and beyond, the pace tends to compress more, and stalkers with tactical speed have a strong record. Front-runners in route races at Prairie Meadows often get challenged into the first turn, which can set up horses with mid-race acceleration.

Post position bias on this track is notable in fields of five or fewer, where the one-hole can produce a slight inside advantage in routes. In larger sprint fields — as seen in Race 6 with twelve runners — outside posts from eight through twelve historically struggle unless the horse in question has the ability to gain position quickly in the run to the first turn. Horses breaking from posts ten, eleven, and twelve in a twelve-horse sprint field at Prairie Meadows face a legitimate structural disadvantage and should be downgraded unless their class or speed figures overwhelm the field.

For tonight's card, pay particular attention to speed horses breaking from the one through four posts in the sprint races, as these horses can find the rail early and avoid traffic. In Race 6, the outside trio of Mind Your Mo (POST 9), Tennessee Grace (POST 10), Lu's Time (POST 11), and Iso Lucky (POST 12) all face an uphill task purely from a positional standpoint.

Race 1 — Post 5:00 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 20000n2l | BUM | Purse $24,984

This opening race is a one-turn mile on the main dirt for horses that have never won two lifetime races, entered for a $20,000 claiming tag. The field of six is competitive and closely matched on class, as the n2l condition limits the field to horses with no more than one career win. The distance at 1320 feet (approximately six and one-half furlongs) suits horses with natural tactical speed that can press the pace and then accelerate through the stretch.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

With Lillabet (POST 1) and Allen's Agenda (POST 6) both carrying co-favorite morning line odds of 2-1, the pace scenario is critical. LILLABET from the inside post will be the horse to watch for early foot. K Dog (POST 5) with trainer Bonnie Birzer and jockey A.E. Birzer is a barn combination that plays well when the horse is spotted correctly. Sunset For Sandra (POST 3) at 4-1 is expected to stalk, as Lynn Chleborad tends to place horses in tactical positions early at this level. If LILLABET and ALLEN'S AGENDA both press to the front, the pace could set up for something off the pace, but this is a claiming sprint and the tendency at Prairie Meadows is for the early leaders to hold on a fast track.

Key Contenders

Lillabet (POST 1) opens at 2-1 co-favorite from the rail for trainer Tom Wellington and jockey K.S. Tohill. The inside post is an asset in a six-horse field at this distance, as Tohill can grab the rail immediately and dictate terms. Wellington is a steady presence at Prairie Meadows with a solid claiming-race record, and Tohill's familiarity with the track gives LILLABET a significant rider advantage. The 2-1 price reflects genuine respect from the morning line maker and the rail post with a top pilot is a strong combination.

Allen's Agenda (POST 6) is the other 2-1 choice, trained by Kevin Eikleberry and ridden by Alberto Pusac. Eikleberry is a capable conditioner at this level and when he sends out a horse at 2-1 from the outside post in a six-horse field, the horse typically has strong recent form. ALLEN'S AGENDA will need to work slightly harder to find position from post six but the 1320-foot distance gives the horse adequate room to establish position before the first turn.

Secondary Choices

Sunset For Sandra (POST 3) at 4-1 for trainer Lynn Chleborad and jockey Alfredo Triana Jr. is the logical secondary choice. Chleborad is one of the more active trainers at Prairie Meadows and knows how to spot horses into winnable spots. Triana is a proven commodity on this circuit, and the middle post position suits a tactical horse. At 4-1, SUNSET FOR SANDRA represents fair value if the pace heats up between the two favorites.

Classic Cash (POST 2) at 5-1 for Brandi Fett and G.W. Corbett deserves attention. Fett has been quietly effective at Prairie Meadows in claiming races at this level, and post two is ideal for a horse that needs to track the pace without getting caught in traffic.

Longshots

K Dog (POST 5) at 6-1 for the Birzer combination is a horse that bettors should not completely dismiss. The Birzer family tends to run their horses when ready and the 6-1 morning line could represent value if the horse has had positive recent workouts. Annietime (POST 4) at 8-1 for trainer Joshua Robinson and Ronnie Huckaby is the longest shot in the field. Robinson has limited recent stats at this meet and the 8-1 morning line reflects genuine questions about this horse's ability to compete at the $20,000 level with this condition.

Selections

Win: Lillabet (POST 1) Place: Allen's Agenda (POST 6) Show: Sunset For Sandra (POST 3)

Betting Strategy: The race shapes up as a likely duel between the two 2-1 favorites. At even money or lower on the board, single tickets on either favorite are poor value. Instead, play a small exacta box of Lillabet (POST 1) and Allen's Agenda (POST 6) and add Sunset For Sandra (POST 3) underneath in exacta keys for value. The trifecta using the two favorites on top with Sunset For Sandra (POST 3) and Classic Cash (POST 2) underneath is the recommended exotic structure.

Race 2 is a six-furlong claiming sprint at the $7,500 level for horses three years old and up that are non-winners of a race in the past 45 days. The CUN designation confirms this is an open claiming event. This is the lowest claiming level on tonight’s card and the field of seven is competitive in the way that cheap claimers typically are — unpredictable and pace-dependent.

Pace Analysis

Hunters Ghost (POST 3) and Morning Cup (POST 5), both trained by Jon Arnett, are interesting in the context of pace. Arnett saddling two runners in the same race typically means he is playing the race with tactical flexibility — one horse may be the designated speed horse and the other a stalker. Morning Cup (POST 5) is the 2-1 morning line choice with jockey A.E. Birzer, while Hunters Ghost (POST 3) is at 3-1 with O. Mojica. If Arnett's horses occupy the two-path and stalking position, they could lock out the rest of the field. Swift As I Am (POST 4) at 4-1 could also press the pace and add pressure early.

Key Contenders

Morning Cup (POST 5) opens as the 2-1 favorite for trainer Jon Arnett with jockey A.E. Birzer. The inside-outside dynamic between Arnett's two entries gives MORNING CUP the advantage of being the better-backed horse, and Birzer is a competent pilot at this level who will know how to position this horse relative to barnmate Hunters Ghost (POST 3). Post five in a seven-horse sprint is workable, and the 2-1 price suggests the horse has the best recent form in this field.

Hunters Ghost (POST 3) at 3-1 for the same Arnett barn with O. Mojica is the second Arnett runner and should not be dismissed. Post three is excellent in a seven-horse sprint, and Mojica is one of the more technically sound riders at Prairie Meadows. Arnett barn entries in the same race often run 1-2, and bettors should consider keying both horses on top of their exotic tickets.

Secondary Choices

Swift As I Am (POST 4) at 4-1 for trainer Tanner Tracy and jockey Elvin Gonzalez is the most logical alternative if the Arnett pair underperforms. Post four is ideal and Gonzalez has been one of the more consistent riders at Prairie Meadows in recent seasons. Allo Enry (POST 6) at 5-1 for trainer Oscar Flores and Alfredo Triana Jr. is a horse worth including in trifectas.

Longshots

Stroller Boy (POST 2) at 6-1 for Henry Guillory Jr. and Cristian Alvarado is a horse that could improve around the inside at this level. Say It Nicely (POST 1) at 8-1 for trainer Lynn Chleborad and Ronnie Huckaby is interesting given Chleborad's activity on the card tonight. Cash's Pal (POST 7) at 10-1 for David McShane and K.S. Tohill is the longest shot but Tohill is capable of getting horses into advantageous positions even from difficult spots.

Selections

Win: Morning Cup (POST 5) Place: Hunters Ghost (POST 3) Show: Swift As I Am (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: The dual Arnett entry is the story of this race. An exacta box of Morning Cup (POST 5) and Hunters Ghost (POST 3) is the primary play. Given the low purse level and cheap claiming conditions, this race can produce upsets, so adding Swift As I Am (POST 4) in the trifecta with the two Arnett horses is prudent. The daily double connecting Race 1 and Race 2 is an early sequence worth playing — use Lillabet (POST 1) and Allen's Agenda (POST 6) on top in Race 1 to Morning Cup (POST 5) and Hunters Ghost (POST 3) in Race 2.

Race 3 — Post 5:54 — 1320f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | BUN | Purse $35,000

The maiden special weight at 1320 feet for state-breds is the most prestigious race of the early card. Horses entered in maiden special weight conditions have never won a race and are not being entered for a claiming price, indicating their connections believe they have upside beyond the claiming ranks. The $35,000 purse is the richest on the card outside of the Race 6 feature. Seven runners go to post.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Spike The Punch (POST 4) is the 2-1 morning line favorite for Coty Rosin and O. Mojica. Rosin is a trainer with a solid record at Prairie Meadows in maiden events and when he sends out a 2-1 morning line shot in a state-bred MSW, the horse typically has superior breeding or workout activity. Dreamofyou (POST 6) at 3-1 for Randy Morse and A.E. Birzer is the other likely pace-setter or close-up stalker. Out Flat (POST 2) at 4-1 for the Martinez barn with Elvin Gonzalez should also be involved early. The pace in maiden sprints at this distance tends to be honest, as green horses often run with more energy than they can sustain, setting up late runners.

Key Contenders

Spike The Punch (POST 4) draws the morning line favoritism at 2-1 for trainer Coty Rosin and jockey O. Mojica. Post four in a seven-horse field is ideal — the horse has room to breathe and can establish mid-pace position without being pushed to the rail or forced wide. Rosin has a history of bringing well-prepared maiden horses to Prairie Meadows and Mojica is the right rider to get the best out of a green horse with talent.

Dreamofyou (POST 6) at 3-1 for Randy Morse and A.E. Birzer is a horse that handicappers respect at this odds level. The Morse-Birzer combination has been productive in maiden events at Prairie Meadows, and a post-six draw in a seven-horse field is not a significant disadvantage at 1320 feet. If DREAMOFYOU can break cleanly and settle in the two-path, this horse is dangerous.

Secondary Choices

Out Flat (POST 2) at 4-1 for the Kelli Martinez barn and Elvin Gonzalez is interesting on several levels. Martinez has two horses in this race — Out Flat (POST 2) and Golden Hurricane (POST 1) — and when a trainer enters two in a maiden race, the better-backed horse typically gets the stronger preparation. OUT FLAT at 4-1 versus GOLDEN HURRICANE at 8-1 suggests OUT FLAT is the preferred runner. Post two is excellent in a seven-horse field. Uncle Tater (POST 3) at 5-1 for trainer F. Dewaine Loy and jockey Walter De La Cruz is a horse that fills the third slot in many trifecta structures.

Longshots

Werthethreeamigos (POST 7) at 10-1 for Lane Johnston and Alfredo Triana Jr. is a deep longshot from the outside post. Johnston is a trainer who occasionally produces maiden upset winners but the 10-1 price from the seven post in a seven-horse field is a risky play. Vegasborn (POST 5) at 15-1 for Nelson Figueroa and K.S. Tohill is the longest shot in the field. While Tohill can get a horse home from difficult positions, 15-1 in a maiden special weight field suggests limited recent activity or underwhelming workout lines. Golden Hurricane (POST 1) at 8-1 for Kelli Martinez and Alberto Pusac is the second Martinez entry and while the inside post in a seven-horse sprint can be an advantage, the 8-1 morning line relative to stablemate OUT FLAT's 4-1 is telling.

Selections

Win: Spike The Punch (POST 4) Place: Dreamofyou (POST 6) Show: Out Flat (POST 2)

Betting Strategy: The maiden special weight is a critical race for Pick 4 and Pick 5 construction. Spike The Punch (POST 4) is the single most logical win horse on the card at this level, but maiden races are inherently unpredictable. Use Spike The Punch (POST 4) as your top single in multi-race sequences but include Dreamofyou (POST 6) as a saver. In exactas, key Spike The Punch (POST 4) on top and use Out Flat (POST 2), Dreamofyou (POST 6), and Uncle Tater (POST 3) underneath.

Race 4 is a six-furlong allowance sprint for state-breds with a $29,000 purse. The Alw 30000s condition indicates horses that have won at the allowance level and are now competing in a restricted (state-bred) allowance event. Seven runners compete, and this field represents some of the best open horses on the Prairie Meadows circuit.

Pace Analysis

Mumayaz (POST 7) opens at 2-1 for Ronald Moquett and O. Mojica, which is significant because Moquett is one of the most accomplished trainers to regularly compete at Prairie Meadows. When Moquett ships or enters a horse at a regional track at 2-1, there is substance behind the morning line. Sexagenarian (POST 3) at 3-1 for Todd Jordan and Elvin Gonzalez is the likely pace challenger. Pronti O Meno (POST 4) at 4-1 for Jon Arnett and Alfredo Triana Jr. fills out the pace scenario as a probable stalker. With a 2-1 favorite likely sitting off the pace and two or three horses going for the lead, this race could develop into a pace duel that sets up Mumayaz (POST 7) for a powerful late run.

Key Contenders

Mumayaz (POST 7) at 2-1 for Ronald Moquett and O. Mojica is the class of this field on paper. The outside post at seven in a six-furlong sprint is manageable, and Mojica has shown repeatedly that he can get horses from wide posts into optimal tracking positions at Prairie Meadows. Moquett's barn operates with sharp fitness, and the 2-1 morning line in a seven-horse state-bred allowance field reflects legitimate superiority.

Sexagenarian (POST 3) at 3-1 for trainer Todd Jordan and jockey Elvin Gonzalez is the primary alternative. Post three is a premium position in a seven-horse sprint, and Jordan has been one of the more productive trainers at Prairie Meadows in recent seasons. Gonzalez is a live rider who scores consistently at this level.

Secondary Choices

Pronti O Meno (POST 4) at 4-1 for Jon Arnett and Alfredo Triana Jr. is a horse worth including in all exotic structures. Arnett's allowance horses are typically well-prepared, and post four in a seven-horse field gives PRONTI O MENO every opportunity to stalk the pace and pounce. El Rojo Vivo (POST 6) at 5-1 for the Birzer barn and A.E. Birzer is a local horse that should be fit and ready. Purse Thief (POST 2) at 6-1 for the Tracy barn and Israel Hernandez gets an inside post that could prove advantageous if this horse can press the pace.

Longshots

Casa Limon (POST 1) at 8-1 for trainer Tanner Tracy and Ronnie Huckaby draws the rail. Tracy saddles two horses in this race — Casa Limon (POST 1) and Purse Thief (POST 2) — and the barn dynamic suggests PURSE THIEF is the preferred runner based on morning line. Tartarian (POST 5) at 15-1 for Lane Johnston and Alberto Pusac is the longest shot in the field and faces a stiff task against allowance-quality state-breds at this level.

Selections

Win: Mumayaz (POST 7) Place: Sexagenarian (POST 3) Show: Pronti O Meno (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: Mumayaz (POST 7) looks like the most formidable horse on paper in Race 4 and is a strong single in multi-race wagers for bettors who want to play with leverage in later races. Key Mumayaz (POST 7) on top in exactas to Sexagenarian (POST 3), Pronti O Meno (POST 4), and Purse Thief (POST 2). The trifecta box of Mumayaz (POST 7), Sexagenarian (POST 3), and Pronti O Meno (POST 4) at a modest investment level is the recommended exotic play. This is also an important leg in the Pick 4 starting in Race 4 and the Pick 5 if it originates in this race.

Race 5 is the maiden claiming sprint at $12,500 for the fillies and mares on the card. Nine runners compete, making this the second-largest field of the evening. The BUM designation indicates open to all breeds, and at the $12,500 maiden claiming level, the competition is as unpredictable as racing gets. These horses have yet to break their maiden and are entered at a price — meaning connections are willing to see them claimed in exchange for the purse money.

Pace Analysis

Telling Tales (POST 5) is the 2-1 morning line favorite for Randy Morse and Elvin Gonzalez. Morse has Dreamofyou (POST 6) in Race 3 as well, and a productive evening for the Morse barn is a realistic scenario. In a nine-horse maiden claiming sprint, early pace is critical. Krazy Like Beth (POST 1) at 4-1 for Tanner Tracy and O. Mojica and Miss Bowring (POST 9) at 4-1 for Jose Ibarra and Alberto Pusac are both co-third choices and will factor into the pace scenario. With multiple horses likely competing for the lead in a wide field, the pace could get honest enough to set up a closer, which is a rarity at Prairie Meadows.

Key Contenders

Telling Tales (POST 5) at 2-1 for Randy Morse and Elvin Gonzalez is the morning line choice and figures to be well-backed. Post five in a nine-horse field is workable, and Gonzalez is adept at finding position in large sprint fields. Morse's horses tend to be fit when they go to post, and a 2-1 maiden claiming favorite at Prairie Meadows with Gonzalez aboard commands respect.

Krazy Like Beth (POST 1) at 4-1 for the Tracy barn and O. Mojica gets the inside post, which is a significant asset in a nine-horse field where the early run to the first turn can be chaotic. Tracy-trained horses have shown strong speed at this level and Krazy Like Beth (POST 1) from the rail with Mojica directing traffic is a legitimate win candidate.

Secondary Choices

Miss Bowring (POST 9) at 4-1 for Jose Ibarra and Alberto Pusac breaks from the extreme outside in a nine-horse field, which is an obstacle on this track. However, the 4-1 morning line matching the inside post horse indicates genuine class or form advantage. The Wife Found Out (POST 8) at 6-1 for David McShane and K.S. Tohill is a horse with a memorable name and a live rider. Tohill regularly outperforms morning line expectations at Prairie Meadows and McShane runs his horses in spots where they can compete. Braxton's Girl (POST 7) at 8-1 for Jesse Oberlander and Israel Hernandez is a mid-priced longshot worth including in trifectas and superfectas.

Longshots

Chitoz Storm Cat (POST 4) at 10-1 for Scott Corderman and Ronnie Huckaby is a horse that figures to need this race. Ragazza Vincente (POST 2) at 12-1 for Edward Kereluk and D.P. Vergara is a deep longshot. Irish Lass (POST 3) at 15-1 for Jerry Glen Stephens and Alfredo Triana Jr. faces steep odds in a wide field. Mama Glows (POST 6) at 20-1 for the Birzer barn and A.E. Birzer is likely not at the top of the Birzer family's priority list tonight given their other active mounts.

Selections

Win: Telling Tales (POST 5) Place: Krazy Like Beth (POST 1) Show: The Wife Found Out (POST 8)

Betting Strategy: Maiden claiming races at $12,500 are among the most volatile on any card. Use Telling Tales (POST 5) and Krazy Like Beth (POST 1) as your primary horses but spread wider than usual in trifectas. A recommended structure is to key Telling Tales (POST 5) on top with Krazy Like Beth (POST 1), The Wife Found Out (POST 8), Braxton's Girl (POST 7), and Miss Bowring (POST 9) filling the second and third spots. This is a great race for a small superfecta with a wide spread.

Race 6 is the feature race of the evening — a twelve-horse restricted allowance sprint for fillies and mares carrying a $40,252 purse. The BUM designation confirms this is open to all breeds. With three Kelli Martinez runners in the field — MISS MINGO (POST 1), CUPIDS SWEETY (POST 3), and HOP AWAY HOTTIE (POST 6) — the barn dynamics are particularly interesting. Two Jordan-trained horses also populate the field in ADDASQUECKTOIT (POST 8) and MIND YOUR MO (POST 9). The twelve-horse field creates a chaotic pace scenario and a genuine opportunity for value in the exotics.

Pace Analysis

In a twelve-horse field at six furlongs, position is everything. Miss Mingo (POST 1) at 8-1 for Martinez gets the inside post, which is premium real estate in this field. Sister Swede (POST 5) at 4-1 for Tracy and Mojica and Hop Away Hottie (POST 6) at 4-1 for Martinez and Israel Hernandez figure as the co-third choices and likely prominent early horses. Aintnoshakin Kid (POST 7) at 5-1 for Lynn Chleborad and A.E. Birzer is a horse that Chleborad will want pressing the pace from a manageable outside post. The pace will be extremely contentious with this many horses, and something tracking in fourth or fifth position with cover will have a significant advantage late.

Key Contenders

Sister Swede (POST 5) at 4-1 for trainer Tanner Tracy and jockey O. Mojica opens as one of the co-favorites. Post five in a twelve-horse field is strong, and Mojica's tactical intelligence in large fields is well-established at Prairie Meadows. Tracy runs this type of filly well in state-bred allowance spots and the 4-1 morning line is fair.

Hop Away Hottie (POST 6) at 4-1 for trainer Kelli Martinez and jockey Israel Hernandez is the Martinez barn's best chance, evidenced by the co-favorite morning line versus Miss Mingo (POST 1) at 8-1 and Cupids Sweety (POST 3) at 12-1. Post six in a twelve-horse sprint is ideal — the horse can find position quickly without being forced to the extreme inside or battling traffic from outside. Hernandez is a capable rider for this type of race.

Secondary Choices

Aintnoshakin Kid (POST 7) at 5-1 for Lynn Chleborad and A.E. Birzer is a horse that deserves serious consideration. Chleborad has had a busy night and knows this track extremely well. Post seven in a twelve-horse field is workable, and Birzer is the right pilot to get a forward-running filly into a good early position. Addasquecktoit (POST 8) at 6-1 for Todd Jordan and Cristian Alvarado is the better-priced Jordan runner compared to Mind Your Mo (POST 9) at 10-1. No Rhyme Or Reason (POST 4) at 8-1 for David McShane and K.S. Tohill is a horse worth including in all exotic tickets — McShane tends to enter horses with a genuine chance despite modest morning line expectations.

Longshots

Miss Mingo (POST 1) at 8-1 for Kelli Martinez and Alberto Pusac has the inside post, which is a natural advantage. The 8-1 morning line relative to stablemate Hop Away Hottie (POST 6) suggests the Martinez barn believes in the latter more strongly. Shannon K (POST 2) at 15-1 for Jon Arnett and D.P. Vergara is a horse that Arnett could have sharp after tonight's earlier efforts. Cupids Sweety (POST 3) at 12-1 is the third Martinez entry and the least favored of the trio. Mind Your Mo (POST 9) at 10-1 for Jordan and Elvin Gonzalez faces a wide post in a large field. Tennessee Grace (POST 10) at 30-1 for Bob Hargens and Carlos J. Hernandez, Lu's Time (POST 11) at 20-1 for Joshua Robinson and Ronnie Huckaby, and Iso Lucky (POST 12) at 15-1 for Lynn Chleborad and Alfredo Triana Jr. all face severe post position challenges in the twelve-horse sprint and are only viable in large superfecta wheels at minimum investment.

Selections

Win: Hop Away Hottie (POST 6) Place: Sister Swede (POST 5) Show: Aintnoshakin Kid (POST 7)

Betting Strategy: This is the best race for exotic wagering on the entire card. With twelve runners, the trifecta and superfecta payoffs can be enormous. Use Hop Away Hottie (POST 6) and Sister Swede (POST 5) as your primary horses and spread the second and third positions across Aintnoshakin Kid (POST 7), No Rhyme Or Reason (POST 4), Addasquecktoit (POST 8), and Miss Mingo (POST 1). The superfecta in this race with a $0.10 base is a recommended play — use Hop Away Hottie (POST 6) and Sister Swede (POST 5) on top with five or six horses filling the second through fourth positions. The pari-mutuel pool on a twelve-horse feature race at Prairie Meadows can produce superfecta payoffs in the hundreds of dollars even at the dime level.

Race 7 — Post 7:42 — 1210f | D | M | Md 15000 | BUN | Purse $22,624

The final race of the evening is a six-furlong maiden claiming sprint at $15,000 for state-breds. Nine runners fill the field, including three Tracy-trained horses — Canadian Jim (POST 1), Kiowa Warrior (POST 5), and Bouazizi (POST 8) — and two runners from the Brandi Fett barn — D D's Legacy (POST 6) and Big Furn (POST 9). Brasa (POST 4) is the 2-1 morning line favorite for Kelly Von Hemel and Israel Hernandez.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Brasa (POST 4) at 2-1 for Von Hemel and Hernandez is the morning line standout and draws post four, which is excellent. Von Hemel is a trainer with multiple circuit experience and when one of Von Hemel's horses opens as a heavy morning line favorite in a state-bred maiden event, the horse typically has a significant form advantage. The Tracy-barn trio of Canadian Jim (POST 1), Kiowa Warrior (POST 5), and Bouazizi (POST 8) creates interesting intra-barn dynamics. Cause I'm Rollin (POST 2) at 5-1 for Henry Guillory Jr. and Ronnie Huckaby figures to be a pace factor from a good post position.

Key Contenders

Brasa (POST 4) at 2-1 for Kelly Von Hemel and Israel Hernandez is the clear morning line choice. Post four in a nine-horse sprint is optimal, and Von Hemel's horses have a history of running well when installed as morning line favorites. Hernandez is a capable rider and the 2-1 price suggests a clear class edge over the rest of this maiden field.

D D's Legacy (POST 6) at 4-1 for Brandi Fett and G.W. Corbett is the second choice and the Fett barn is capable of producing well-timed winner at this level. Post six in a nine-horse field is workable.

Secondary Choices

Bouazizi (POST 8) at 4-1 for the Tracy barn and Elvin Gonzalez shares the second choice odds with D D's Legacy (POST 6). With Tracy running three horses in this race, BOUAZIZI's 4-1 price makes it the preferred Tracy runner from a morning line standpoint. Cause I'm Rollin (POST 2) at 5-1 for Henry Guillory Jr. and Ronnie Huckaby gets a good post and Guillory occasionally produces sharp maiden winners at Prairie Meadows.

Longshots

Canadian Jim (POST 1) at 12-1 for Tracy and A.E. Birzer is the least favored of the Tracy trio. Big Furn (POST 9) at 10-1 for the Fett barn and Walter De La Cruz is the second Fett entry and draws the outside post — a structural disadvantage in a nine-horse sprint. Kiowa Warrior (POST 5) at 6-1 is the middle-priced Tracy runner and could improve to contend from a solid post position with Mojica aboard. Boundings Mischief (POST 3) at 15-1 for Lynn Chleborad and Alfredo Triana Jr. is a deep longshot from a good post. Pitching Wedge (POST 7) at 20-1 for Nelson Figueroa and Alberto Pusac faces a very tough task at the longest morning line odds in the field.

Selections

Win: Brasa (POST 4) Place: D D's Legacy (POST 6) Show: Bouazizi (POST 8)

Betting Strategy: Brasa (POST 4) is the strongest single-race win bet on the evening card based purely on the morning line confidence at 2-1 in a state-bred maiden event. However, maiden claimers are volatile. An exacta key using Brasa (POST 4) on top with D D's Legacy (POST 6), Bouazizi (POST 8), Cause I'm Rollin (POST 2), and Kiowa Warrior (POST 5) underneath covers the most likely scenarios. Use this race as the final leg of any Pick 4 or Pick 5 sequences that began in Races 3, 4, 5, or 6.

Jockey Notes and Insights

O. Mojica is the busiest and potentially most dangerous rider on tonight's Prairie Meadows card. Mojica has live mounts in Race 1 on Allen's Agenda (POST 6), Race 2 on Hunters Ghost (POST 3), Race 3 on Spike The Punch (POST 4), Race 5 on Krazy Like Beth (POST 1), Race 6 on Sister Swede (POST 5), and Race 7 on Kiowa Warrior (POST 5). Mojica consistently ranks among the top jockeys at Prairie Meadows in terms of win percentage and he has a particularly strong record aboard front-running and pace-pressing horses in sprint events. His mount in Race 3 — Spike The Punch (POST 4) — is one of the best bets of the evening based on trainer reputation and post position.

K.S. Tohill is another top-tier rider with a heavy book tonight. Tohill rides Lillabet (POST 1) in Race 1, Cash's Pal (POST 7) in Race 2, Vegasborn (POST 5) in Race 3, No Rhyme Or Reason (POST 4) in Race 6, The Wife Found Out (POST 8) in Race 5, and Canadian Jim (POST 1) in Race 7. Tohill's ability to navigate traffic and put horses in optimal positions late in sprints makes every Tohill mount worth a second look, even at longer odds. The Wife Found Out (POST 8) in Race 5 at 6-1 and No Rhyme Or Reason (POST 4) in Race 6 at 8-1 are both worth including in exotic structures.

Alfredo Triana Jr. has a consistent workload across the card with mounts in Races 1 through 7. Triana is well-traveled on the Iowa circuit and brings strong local knowledge. His best chance of the evening may come aboard Pronti O Meno (POST 4) in Race 4, where trainer Jon Arnett's allowance horses have a strong record.

A.E. Birzer has the advantage of riding for the family barn in several races, which provides a communication edge on horse fitness that outside riders do not enjoy. His mounts in Race 2 on Morning Cup (POST 5), Race 3 on Dreamofyou (POST 6), and Race 6 on Aintnoshakin Kid (POST 7) are all strong plays based on trainer preparation and post position.

Elvin Gonzalez is active throughout the card and has particular relevance in Race 4 on Sexagenarian (POST 3) for Todd Jordan. The Jordan-Gonzalez combination has been productive at Prairie Meadows and the 3-1 morning line suggests Sexagenarian (POST 3) is a genuine threat to the Moquett-trained favorite.

Israel Hernandez rides Hop Away Hottie (POST 6) in the Race 6 feature for Kelli Martinez and Brasa (POST 4) in Race 7 for Kelly Von Hemel. Both horses are morning line co-favorites or clear choices, and Hernandez has the opportunity for a productive second half of the card.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Kelli Martinez is the most strategically interesting trainer on tonight's card based on sheer numbers. Martinez saddles two horses in Race 3 — Out Flat (POST 2) and Golden Hurricane (POST 1) — and three horses in the Race 6 feature — Miss Mingo (POST 1), Cupids Sweety (POST 3), and Hop Away Hottie (POST 6). When a trainer enters multiple runners in the same race, they typically have one horse they view as a legitimate contender and the others as supplemental entries. In Race 3, Out Flat (POST 2) at 4-1 versus Golden Hurricane (POST 1) at 8-1 clearly identifies which horse Martinez prefers. In Race 6, Hop Away Hottie (POST 6) at 4-1 is the barn's top choice while Cupids Sweety (POST 3) at 12-1 is the least expected to win outright. This information is useful in constructing exacta and trifecta tickets — when a trainer enters three horses in a race, there is legitimate non-zero probability of a 1-2 finish from that barn.

Jon Arnett fields horses in Race 2 (both HUNTERS GHOST [POST 3] and MORNING CUP [POST 5]), Race 4 (PRONTI O MENO [POST 4]), and Race 6 (SHANNON K [POST 2]). The dual entry in Race 2 is the key Arnett storyline for the evening. Arnett trainers at Prairie Meadows with dual entries have historically shown a strong 1-2 pattern, meaning bettors who key both Arnett horses on top in Race 2 exotics are using sound strategy.

Tanner Tracy is the most active trainer on the card with entries in Races 4, 5, 6, and 7 — and three horses in Race 7 alone. Tracy has been one of the consistent presence trainers at Prairie Meadows for multiple seasons and the barn rarely wastes entries, particularly in state-bred events. Bouazizi (POST 8) at 4-1 in Race 7 and Kiowa Warrior (POST 5) at 6-1 are the preferred Tracy runners tonight based on morning line. In Race 4, the dual Tracy entry of Casa Limon (POST 1) and Purse Thief (POST 2) follows the same pattern — Purse Thief (POST 2) at 6-1 is preferred over Casa Limon (POST 1) at 8-1.

Ronald Moquett's presence on the card with Mumayaz (POST 7) in Race 4 deserves emphasis. Moquett is a high-percentage trainer whose horses are consistently fit and placed in appropriate spots. A Moquett-trained horse at 2-1 in a state-bred allowance sprint should be considered a top selection for win bettors.

Lynn Chleborad is represented across the card in Races 1, 2, 6, and 7. The Aintnoshakin Kid (POST 7) at 5-1 in Race 6 is the Chleborad horse with the most realistic winning shot on tonight's card. The Chleborad-Birzer combination in allowance company is worth watching throughout the evening.

Kelly Von Hemel's presence in Race 7 with Brasa (POST 4) is notable because Von Hemel does not routinely ship or enter horses at Prairie Meadows for races the barn cannot win. The 2-1 morning line on Brasa (POST 4) in a state-bred maiden field is a strong endorsement of this horse's readiness.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The best value on tonight's Prairie Meadows card exists in the middle of the card — Races 3 through 6 — where class differentials are meaningful and trainer patterns are clearly identifiable.

The Win bet of the night is Brasa (POST 4) in Race 7 at 2-1 for Kelly Von Hemel. Although 2-1 is not an attractive price in isolation, maiden claiming sprints for state-breds can be genuinely one-sided when a superior horse is present, and Von Hemel's morning line confidence merits a straight win investment. The backup win bet is Mumayaz (POST 7) in Race 4 at 2-1 for Ronald Moquett — same reasoning applies.

The best value play on the card is Aintnoshakin Kid (POST 7) at 5-1 in Race 6 for Lynn Chleborad and A.E. Birzer. In a twelve-horse feature race with two co-favorites at 4-1, the 5-1 on a well-placed horse from a productive trainer with a capable jockey in an ideal post position represents genuine overlay potential.

For exacta players, the most constructive plays are:

Race 6: HOP AWAY HOTTIE (POST 6) and SISTER SWEDE (POST 5) on top, with AINTNOSHAKIN KID (POST 7), NO RHYME OR REASON (POST 4), and ADDASQUECKTOIT (POST 8) underneath in exactas and trifectas.

For multi-race sequences, the Pick 4 starting in Race 4 is the recommended wager:

Race 4: MUMAYAZ (POST 7) single

Race 5: TELLING TALES (POST 5) and KRAZY LIKE BETH (POST 1)

Race 6: HOP AWAY HOTTIE (POST 6), SISTER SWEDE (POST 5), AINTNOSHAKIN KID (POST 7)

Race 7: BRASA (POST 4) single

A 1x2x3x1 Pick 4 structure costs $6.00 at a $0.50 base and provides solid coverage of the most likely outcomes in each leg. If either Telling Tales (POST 5) or Krazy Like Beth (POST 1) wins Race 5 and either Hop Away Hottie (POST 6) or Sister Swede (POST 5) wins Race 6 alongside the two singles, the Pick 4 payoff should be meaningful. Mumayaz (POST 7) and Brasa (POST 4) as singles keep the ticket manageable.

For a slightly more aggressive approach, a Pick 5 beginning in Race 3 adds Spike The Punch (POST 4) as an opening single and creates a 1x1x2x3x1 structure for $6.00 at a $0.50 base. If Spike The Punch (POST 4) runs as expected in the maiden special weight and Mumayaz (POST 7) delivers in the allowance, the Pick 5 carryover potential and base payoffs at Prairie Meadows make this sequence a strong investment.

The superfecta in Race 6 at the $0.10 base is the highest-ceiling wager on the card. A recommended structure uses Hop Away Hottie (POST 6) and Sister Swede (POST 5) in positions one and two (both ways), with Aintnoshakin Kid (POST 7), No Rhyme Or Reason (POST 4), and Addasquecktoit (POST 8) filling positions three and four. A full wheel of these five horses in a $0.10 superfecta creates 60 combinations for $6.00 and has legitimate potential for a three-figure payoff given the size and competitiveness of the field.

Good luck at Prairie Meadows on May 18th. Play with discipline, manage your bankroll across the nine-race card, and target the races where the trainer and jockey angles point most clearly toward a single outcome.
