SARATOGA RACE COURSE — WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19, 2026

Race Day Overview

The Spa's summer meet rolls into Wednesday with a full eight-race card that offers a diverse mix of conditions ranging from low-level $30,000 claimers to a $150,000 New York-bred stakes on the inner turf. The headline event is Race 7, the NYSStLbrtB150k stakes on the turf, a $150,000 purse event restricted to New York-bred fillies and mares that figures to draw sharp public interest given the quality of the field. The card opens with a $40,000 claimer on dirt at nine-and-a-half furlongs and closes with a maiden $50,000 claimer on the turf marathon at eleven furlongs, making it an excellent card for exotic players who enjoy variety in surface and distance.

The meet has been defined by Jose Ortiz leading the rider colony with 56 wins through August 17, followed by Manuel Franco (43) and Flavien Prat (40). Irad Ortiz Jr. sits fourth with 30 wins, and Ricardo Santana Jr. rounds out the top five at 22. These five jockeys dominate the meet and are represented heavily across today's card, meaning trainer-jockey connections take on added significance. Linda Rice continues to be one of the most active trainers on the grounds, saddling horses in Races 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8. Chad Brown, Saffie Joseph Jr., and Steve Asmussen also have strong representation, and the big-stable angles will be worth monitoring throughout the afternoon.

The news surrounding Saturday's Grade 1 Alabama is generating significant buzz, with Counting Stars drawing top billing as the 3-year-old filly division standout. Golden Tempo, the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner, worked four furlongs in 47.46 seconds on a labeled track over the weekend, pointing toward a Breeders' Cup campaign. Renegade breezed a half-mile in 50.66 seconds at Saratoga as he builds toward the Travers. Survie completed a remarkable graded stakes double at the meeting, capturing the Grade 1 Christophe Clement Turf 13 days after a previous graded score, confirming that the European-trained turf horses have arrived in serious form this summer. These developments set a high-quality backdrop for today's undercard, where sharp play can be found in the claiming and allowance ranks.

WEATHER AND TRACK CONDITIONS

Saratoga has experienced its typical sultry summer pattern through mid-August 2026, with heat and humidity dominating the Spa's afternoons. Forecasts for Wednesday, August 19 indicate partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the upper 80s and isolated storm chances developing in the late afternoon, consistent with the pattern that has characterized much of the meet. The main track has been labeled “fast” for recent workouts, including the surface description noted during Golden Tempo's Saturday breeze. The inner turf, which hosts Races 5 and 7 today, has been firm to good based on recent racing and should remain raceable provided the afternoon storms hold off until after the card concludes.

Track maintenance at Saratoga has been consistently praised this summer. The main track has shown typical Spa characteristics — a surface that tends to favor horses who can secure position early while not being overly speed-favoring at most distances. The inner turf course, used for shorter maiden turf events and stakes, has been playing evenly with no strongly reported rail bias. Horsemen have noted the turf firm enough to produce solid ground for closers on the outer path, which is worth noting when evaluating pace scenarios in Races 5 and 7.

TRACK AND POST POSITION BIAS

The Saratoga main track through mid-August has shown a modest but present pace-favoring tendency at sprint distances, while routing races have been slightly more kind to stalkers who can secure mid-pack positioning within the first half-mile. Post position studies for the main track this meet suggest that inside posts (one through three) have been at a slight disadvantage at longer dirt routes due to early positioning battles, while outside posts (five through eight) in routes have allowed horses to settle cleanly. At sprint distances, the one and two posts have shown normal or slightly negative returns at Saratoga, where early positioning from the rail can be difficult in full fields.

On the inner turf, the rail has shown no significant advantage this meet. The course has been playing with enough pace that closers get their chances, and the outside post positions in the short inner turf sprints (Race 5 at six furlongs) have not been a hindrance when the pace has been honest. For the 11-furlong turf marathon in Race 8, early positioning matters enormously given the long run to the first turn on the inner course, and horses breaking from posts one through four will have an opportunity to secure ground without burning unnecessary energy.

For Race 7 on the inner turf at 11 furlongs around two turns, posts one through four historically carry an advantage at Saratoga's inner turf layout, as the run to the first turn is manageable from those slots and horses can save significant ground through the long first turn.

RACE 1 — Post (1:10) — 9.5f | D | C | Clm 40000b | BUM | Purse $59,000

Pace Analysis

Nine-and-a-half furlongs on the main track in a $40,000 claimer for non-winners of two races lifetime (the “b” condition). This is a routing claimer that figures to produce a moderate pace scenario. Save Us Melania (POST 2) under Jose Ortiz will likely dictate terms or stalk from close range given her connections, while Street View (POST 4) with Manuel Franco could be forwardly placed as well. All Class (POST 5) with Ricardo Santana Jr. rates as the second choice and may need to be used early from the outside position. Expect a pace that gets honest fractions but doesn't collapse into a true speed duel, setting up a scenario where the horse that controls the fractions or sits second could be sitting on a winning trip at the head of the stretch.

Key Contenders

Save Us Melania (POST 2) is the morning line co-favorite at 2-1 for trainer Linda Rice and jockey Jose Ortiz. Rice is one of the most accomplished trainers on the New York circuit and understands the claiming ranks at Saratoga as well as anyone. Ortiz leads all Saratoga riders with 56 wins through August 17 and has been the dominant force at the meet. The combination of the leading rider and an experienced claiming trainer at a competitive price makes this filly the natural benchmark. She brings class into a non-winners-of-two spot that should be within her range, and the 9.5-furlong distance on the main track suits a stalking-style runner who can close off a moderate pace.

All Class (POST 5) is the other co-favorite at 2-1 for Richard Dutrow and Ricardo Santana Jr. Dutrow has been resurgent as a trainer and knows how to spot horses in spots where they can win. Santana ranks fifth in the jockey standings but has been live in these mid-level claiming events throughout the meet. Post 5 is workable at this distance, and a horse named ALL CLASS in a $40,000 claimer may be dropping from a higher level, which is the optimal pattern for identifying winners at Saratoga.

Secondary Choices

Snide (POST 3) is 3-1 for Linda Rice and Kendrick Carmouche. Rice running two horses in the same race is always worth noting — when a powerful trainer doubles up, handicappers should decide which is preferred, as the stable has made a deliberate choice to run both. Carmouche is a solid veteran who has ridden well at the Spa, and Snide (POST 3) from the three post in a two-turn route has a clean trip setup. The 3-1 morning line suggests the public respects this entry, and Rice's track record in the claiming ranks makes both of her runners dangerous.

Street View (POST 4) at 4-1 for Steven Schauer and Manuel Franco is worth including. Franco is the second-leading rider at the meet with 43 wins, and inside posts in two-turn routes at Saratoga can be advantageous for horses who break alertly and get position. Schauer is a sharp claiming trainer who spots his horses well.

Longshots

Malu (POST 6) at 8-1 for Gustavo Rodriguez and Flavien Prat is the most intriguing of the remaining runners. Prat ranks third among Saratoga riders with 40 wins and is coming off a strong weekend. Rodriguez is a capable conditioner and Malu (POST 6) at 8-1 from the rail-adjacent post six in a six-horse field could find a clean trip on the outside. If the pace sets up perfectly, this runner could be live at a price.

Thirteen Red Flags (POST 1) at 20-1 for Amira Chichakly and Omar Hernandez Moreno is a significant longshot who lacks the class or connections to overcome the morning line. Pass.

Selections

Win: Save Us Melania (POST 2) Place: All Class (POST 5) Show: Snide (POST 3)

Betting Strategy: The Rice-Ortiz combination is the primary bet here. Use Save Us Melania (POST 2) on top in exactas with All Class (POST 5) and Snide (POST 3). The Rice double-up with Snide (POST 3) makes a small saver exacta (POST 3 over POST 2) worth a few dollars. Malu (POST 6) can be used underneath in trifectas for marginal coverage at a price.

RACE 2 — Post (1:45) — 1m | D | AO | OClm 80000n2x | BUM | Purse $125,000

Pace Analysis

One mile on the main track in an optional $80,000 claimer for non-winners of two allowance races. This is a quality condition with a $125,000 purse, and the field of seven features several legitimate contenders with strong connections. Pronghorn (POST 6) for Steve Asmussen and Jose Ortiz figures to be forwardly placed given Asmussen's tendency to position horses on the lead or near it at one mile. Low Country Magic (POST 2) with Manuel Franco could also press the early pace from the two post. The inside posts in this one-mile route may benefit from early position, but the quality of the closers in the field makes pace scenario crucial. Expect honest fractions at this level.

Key Contenders

Pronghorn (POST 6) is the morning line favorite at 2-1 for Steve Asmussen and Jose Ortiz. The combination of the meet's leading rider and one of the sport's most prolific winning trainers commands immediate respect. Asmussen consistently places horses in spots where they are competitive, and the optional claiming conditions at $80,000 for non-winners of two allowance races represents a logical spot for a well-placed router. Ortiz in the irons gives this horse a significant tactical advantage, and a main track router at a mile for Asmussen-Ortiz at 2-1 is the type of play that wins races at Saratoga.

Concurrently (POST 7) at 4-1 for Chad Brown and Flavien Prat is a major threat. Brown is arguably the finest turf trainer in North America, but his main track horses at Saratoga are also competitive, and Concurrently (POST 7) with Prat from the outside post figures to have the ability to find a stalking trip. Brown-Prat is a formidable pairing, and at 4-1, this horse offers value if the pace scenario sets up for a closer.

Ballerina D'oro (POST 4) at 4-1 for Chad Brown and Dylan Davis is another Brown runner in this spot. Brown sending two in the same race is significant — he has the stable depth to run multiple entries and typically wins at a high rate when doubling up. Davis has been solid at the meet. Inside post four in a one-mile route is advantageous for a horse that can find position on or near the lead. Brown's two-horse entry is formidable.

Secondary Choices

Ultimate Authority (POST 3) at 6-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. and Tyler Gaffalione is an interesting middle-priced runner. Joseph saddles two horses in this race (also MIDTOWN LIGHTS), and Ultimate Authority (POST 3) draws the better of the two morning line odds. Gaffalione has been aboard some live horses at the Spa this summer, and the three post in a one-mile route allows for early positioning.

Low Country Magic (POST 2) at 4-1 for Horacio De Paz and Manuel Franco is on the pace. Franco from the two post at a mile can steal position and make it tough for closers in an evenly-run field. De Paz is not the marquee name in this field but has shown improvement at the Spa.

Longshots

Midtown Lights (POST 5) at 15-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. and Edgard Zayas is the second Joseph entry and rates as the longer price of the barn's two runners in this spot. At 15-1, the price is attractive but the morning line suggests lesser credentials. Worth a small inclusion in wide exotic tickets.

Purloin (POST 1) at 12-1 for Linda Rice and Jose Lezcano draws the rail in a one-mile route. The one post at a mile on Saratoga's main track is historically difficult, as the horse must clear early or be stuck on the fence. Lezcano is capable but not among the top riders in the colony this meet. Rice is dangerous anywhere, but the post position is a concern.

Selections

Win: Pronghorn (POST 6) Place: Concurrently (POST 7) Show: Ballerina D'oro (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: Asmussen-Ortiz at 2-1 is a worthy single in multi-race wagers. The Brown double entry complicates exacta wagering — use Pronghorn (POST 6) on top over Concurrently (POST 7) and Ballerina D'oro (POST 4). A key race for the Pick 3 starting here, as the favorite is strong but the Brown double creates value underneath.

RACE 3 — Post (2:20) — 9.5f | D | CO | OClm 75000 | BOF | Purse $78,000

Pace Analysis

Nine-and-a-half furlongs on the main track, optional $75,000 claimer for fillies and mares. This eight-horse field features three Linda Rice runners, making it one of the more complex trainer-centric puzzle races on the card. L'eclair (POST 6) under Jose Ortiz is the 3-1 morning line favorite and figures as the class of the field. Hot Gossip (POST 7) with Manuel Franco is another Rice runner, and Baseball Lady (POST 2) is the third Rice entry with Carmouche. The pace in this two-turn route for fillies and mares figures to be moderate, with Huck's Agenda (POST 1) under John Velazquez potentially forcing an early tempo from the inside. L'eclair (POST 6) figures to stalk and pounce. Distance is slightly long for some speed types, giving the stalkers and closers a reasonable shot.

Key Contenders

L'eclair (POST 6) at 3-1 for Richard Dutrow and Jose Ortiz is the clear public choice. Dutrow placing his best horse with the meet's leading rider in an optional $75,000 claimer for fillies is a textbook winning angle. Ortiz from post six has ample room to find his spot, and at a mile-and-three-sixteenths, a filly who can relax behind the pace and accelerate through the lane is the prototype winner. Dutrow's recent form at the Spa has been solid, and L'eclair (POST 6) deserves full respect as the morning line choice.

Hot Gossip (POST 7) at 4-1 for Linda Rice and Manuel Franco is the pick of the Rice trio in this spot. Rice running three horses in a single race is extraordinary and signals that she has horses ready to fire. Franco has been red-hot all meet with 43 wins, and from post seven in a two-turn route, he can find a stalking trip. The 4-1 morning line is a fair price for one of three stablemates, and if Franco can exploit any pace advantage, Hot Gossip (POST 7) could be the right Rice pick on top.

Secondary Choices

Huck's Agenda (POST 1) at 4-1 for Kenneth McPeek and John Velazquez is an intriguing contender. McPeek is a sharp horseman who does not waste trips at Saratoga, and Velazquez is a Hall of Famer who knows this track better than virtually any rider alive. The inside post in a two-turn route is mixed — Velazquez may be able to find a clean path, and if Huck's Agenda (POST 1) can set or stalk the early pace and get first run in the lane, the horse could wire or hold on.

Cravings (POST 4) at 5-1 for Steven Schauer and Ricardo Santana Jr. occupies a middle-ground post with clean trip potential. Schauer has shown he can train fillies to win in the claiming ranks at these odds, and Cravings (POST 4) could be live if the pace scenario sets up correctly.

Pinky Brier (POST 5) at 6-1 for Gustavo Rodriguez and Flavien Prat is a name worth noting given Prat's current form. Rodriguez-Prat has shown chemistry at the meet, and the 6-1 price makes Pinky Brier (POST 5) a useful inclusion in exotics.

Longshots

Baseball Lady (POST 2) at 6-1 is the third Rice runner. Carmouche is capable but not among the top five riders at the meet by win totals. At 6-1, she is priced similarly to Pinky Brier (POST 5) and may attract action based on the Rice name.

Celestial Body (POST 8) at 8-1 for Lisa Bartkowski and Luis Saez offers an outside post in a two-turn route. Bartkowski is a lesser-known trainer at the Spa, but Saez is a top-tier rider who can overcome post position disadvantages. This runner is worth a look in trifecta coverage.

Sparkling Mama (POST 3) at 15-1 for Dominick Schettino and Edgard Zayas is a significant price in this spot and likely requires a significant pace collapse to factor. Use underneath only in large trifecta boxes.

Selections

Win: L'eclair (POST 6) Place: Hot Gossip (POST 7) Show: Huck's Agenda (POST 1)

Betting Strategy: L'eclair (POST 6) and Hot Gossip (POST 7) as a top-two exacta box with Huck's Agenda (POST 1) and Cravings (POST 4) underneath. The three-horse Rice stable has complicated pricing — L'eclair (POST 6) and Hot Gossip (POST 7) are the preferred Rice runners. Baseball Lady (POST 2) can be included in wide trifectas. Sparkling Mama (POST 3) is a throw-out.

RACE 4 — Post (2:55) — 6.5f | D | CO | OClm 30000 | CUN | Purse $65,000

Pace Analysis

Six-and-a-half furlongs on the main track, optional $30,000 claimer for older horses, colts and geldings. This is the lowest-class claiming race on the card and the most wide-open. Gardiner (POST 7) under Jose Ortiz is the 2-1 morning line favorite and shapes as the class of the field at this level. Treaty Obligation (POST 3) with Edgard Zayas is the second choice at 4-1. The sprint distance brings more speed types into play, and Big Hat Willie (POST 2) and Mischievous M (POST 5) could be forwardly placed. With multiple potential pace horses in the field, fractions could get genuine and set up the closers.

Key Contenders

Gardiner (POST 7) at 2-1 for Joe Sharp and Jose Ortiz is the clear favorite. Sharp is a well-regarded trainer who places his horses with precision, and pairing with the meet's leading rider at the $30,000 claiming level is a powerful combination. The outside post in a sprint is manageable for a horse with early speed or closing ability. Ortiz has won with horses at every level of the claiming scale this summer, and Gardiner (POST 7) is the horse to beat.

Treaty Obligation (POST 3) at 4-1 for Rudy Rodriguez and Edgard Zayas is the public's second choice. Rodriguez saddles two in this race (also DISARMED at post 4), and Treaty Obligation (POST 3) is the preferred entry at the better price. The three post in a sprint is favorable for securing position early in a field of nine, and Zayas has been riding with confidence at the Spa.

Secondary Choices

Mischievous M (POST 5) at 5-1 for Ilkay Kantarmaci and Manuel Franco is a middle-price runner with the second-leading rider at the meet. Franco's 43 wins at the Spa carry significant weight at any class level, and Mischievous M (POST 5) from post five in a sprint has a clean setup. Kantarmaci is not a marquee name but clearly has this horse ready if using Franco.

Runaway Joke (POST 8) at 8-1 for Chad Summers and Tyler Gaffalione is the next most interesting option. Gaffalione from post eight in a sprint will need traffic to break his way, but the 8-1 morning line offers genuine value if this horse has early speed or can pounce after a pace collapse. Gaffalione has been sharp throughout the meet.

Protected (POST 9) at 8-1 for Carlos Martin and Kendrick Carmouche is another outside runner in a nine-horse field. Martin is a capable trainer at the Spa level, and Carmouche can be opportunistic in sprint races. The outside post in a sprint requires alertness out of the gate.

Longshots

Disarmed (POST 4) at 10-1 is the second Rodriguez-Rodriguez entry (jockey Silvestre Gonzalez). Gonzalez is not among the top riders at the meet, which limits appeal at 10-1 even with a capable trainer.

Big Hat Willie (POST 2) at 10-1 for Lolita Shivmangal and Ricardo Santana Jr. is interesting solely because of the Santana connection. Santana is fifth at the meet with 22 wins, and even at 10-1, a Santana horse in a low-level claimer at Saratoga is worth a small exotic play.

Trust Issues (POST 1) at 15-1 for Gregory Charlerie and Dylan Davis is a longshot from the rail in a sprint. The one post in a sprint at Saratoga can be hazardous in a full field.

Conniving (POST 6) at 15-1 for Rachael Keithan and Katie Davis is a deep longshot that requires a perfect trip to factor.

Selections

Win: Gardiner (POST 7) Place: Treaty Obligation (POST 3) Show: Mischievous M (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: Ortiz-Sharp is the play of choice. Gardiner (POST 7) on top in exactas with Treaty Obligation (POST 3) and Mischievous M (POST 5). Runaway Joke (POST 8) and Big Hat Willie (POST 2) can serve as trifecta fillers given the value of their respective odds.

RACE 5 — Post (3:30) — 6f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | BUN | Purse $100,000

Pace Analysis

Six furlongs on the inner turf, maiden special weight for juveniles. This is a first-level maiden race on the turf for two-year-olds, which introduces significant uncertainty. The $100,000 purse reflects the quality of stock entered. Sweetnessthrtyfour (POST 10) is the 2-1 morning line choice and figures as the most experienced or best-bred runner in the field. Sultan Hassan (POST 3) at 3-1 for Horacio De Paz and Flavien Prat is the second choice. With several first-time starters likely in the field, early pace in a turf sprint for juveniles can be unpredictable — horses that break cleanly and find a comfortable position through the early going typically have an advantage. The inner turf at Saratoga at six furlongs is a demanding test for young horses.

Key Contenders

Sweetnessthrtyfour (POST 10) at 2-1 is the morning line choice despite the outside post in a six-furlong turf sprint. Michael Miceli trains this runner, and Ricardo Santana Jr. has the call, though there is a second Santana mount listed in this race at post five. The morning line assignment at 2-1 suggests this is the most accomplished or best-working horse in the field. Outside posts in turf sprints for juveniles at Saratoga require a clean break, but the class edge should overcome post position concerns.

Sultan Hassan (POST 3) at 3-1 for Horacio De Paz and Flavien Prat is ideally placed from the three post in this turf sprint. Prat has been outstanding at the meet with 40 wins, and De Paz has developed a strong partnership with top jockeys this summer. The combination of an inside draw and a top rider in a maiden turf sprint for juveniles makes Sultan Hassan (POST 3) extremely dangerous.

Secondary Choices

Hot Off The Beach (POST 1) at 4-1 for Richard Dutrow and John Velazquez draws the rail in a turf sprint. The rail post in a juvenile turf sprint at Saratoga is workable if the horse breaks alertly. Velazquez brings Hall of Fame experience, and Dutrow's ability to prepare two-year-olds cannot be discounted. At 4-1, the combination of a capable trainer, a top jockey, and an inside post makes this runner a genuine secondary choice.

True Legend (POST 6) at 4-1 for George Weaver and Manuel Franco occupies a mid-field post with the second-leading rider at the meet. Weaver is an excellent trainer with turf horses and has consistently produced results with juveniles on the grass at Saratoga. Franco-Weaver has been a productive combination this summer.

Engraved (POST 2) at 6-1 for Linda Rice and Jose Ortiz is a horse to watch. Rice with Ortiz in a maiden turf sprint is never to be dismissed — Ortiz is the meet leader and finds ways to win from any post. The two post gives this runner a clean trip setup.

Story Of Rory (POST 8) at 6-1 for Amelia Green and Tyler Gaffalione draws a manageable post. Green is a less-prominent trainer but Gaffalione has been excellent at the meet and can compensate for trainer inexperience.

Longshots

Violent Act (POST 5) at 5-1 for Philip Antonacci and Ricardo Santana Jr. The dual Santana listing in this race between POST 5 and POST 10 needs clarification on rider assignments. At 5-1, Violent Act (POST 5) could be an interesting play depending on which mount Santana takes.

Crazy Busted (POST 7) at 15-1 for Bruce Brown and Edgard Zayas is an outsider with limited appeal at these odds.

Thespian (POST 9) at 20-1 for Bob Dunham and Dylan Davis is another deep longshot in the maiden ranks.

Strobe Light (POST 4) at 20-1 for James Ferraro and Luis Saez deserves mention despite the long price — Saez is capable of overcoming odds in any situation but the morning line suggests limited form.

Selections

Win: Sultan Hassan (POST 3) Place: Sweetnessthrtyfour (POST 10) Show: Hot Off The Beach (POST 1)

Betting Strategy: Prat's inner turf form makes Sultan Hassan (POST 3) the preference over the morning line choice. Exacta: Sultan Hassan (POST 3) over Sweetnessthrtyfour (POST 10) and Hot Off The Beach (POST 1). This is a volatile juvenile maiden race — use multiple horses in trifectas and keep exacta investments modest. True Legend (POST 6) and Engraved (POST 2) make smart trifecta inclusions.

RACE 6 — Post (4:05) — 9.5f | D | R | Alw 55000s | BUN | Purse $78,000

Pace Analysis

Nine-and-a-half furlongs on the main track, straight allowance for three-year-olds (the “s” conditions suggest single allowance or state-bred conditions). Big Gain (POST 6) at 3-1 under John Velazquez is the morning line favorite for Norm Casse. Sea Vista (POST 2) at 4-1 for Michael Trombetta with Jose Ortiz, and Discotheque (POST 3) at 4-1 for J. Kent Sweezey with Luis Saez share the second choice status. South Bend Tom (POST 5) at 4-1 for Albert Stall Jr. and Flavien Prat adds another major rider into the mix. This is a quality allowance race at nine-and-a-half furlongs where pace will be set by whichever horses push forward early — Sergeant Capps (POST 1) and Moment's Notice (POST 4) could establish early fractions.

Key Contenders

Big Gain (POST 6) at 3-1 for Norm Casse and John Velazquez is the public's top choice. Casse is a respected trainer who programs horses effectively in these allowance conditions, and Velazquez brings decades of Saratoga wisdom to this assignment. Post six in a two-turn route at nine-and-a-half furlongs gives this horse room to find a natural trip. The 3-1 morning line reflects legitimate class advantage over this field.

Sea Vista (POST 2) at 4-1 for Michael Trombetta and Jose Ortiz is an extremely dangerous runner given the meet's leading rider. Trombetta is a capable Maryland-based trainer who ships to Saratoga with serious horses, and Ortiz in the irons at any distance in a straight allowance represents a significant threat. The two post in a two-turn route can be tricky, but Ortiz navigates traffic expertly.

South Bend Tom (POST 5) at 4-1 for Albert Stall Jr. and Flavien Prat is another powerful trainer-jockey combination. Stall is a prominent Louisiana-based conditioner who sends sharp horses to Saratoga, and Prat's current form (third-leading rider, 40 wins) makes him one of the most dangerous riders on the grounds.

Secondary Choices

Discotheque (POST 3) at 4-1 for J. Kent Sweezey and Luis Saez rounds out the four co-secondary choices at this price. Saez is a world-class rider and the three post in a two-turn route offers ideal position-securing potential. Sweezey is less prolific than the other trainers in this race but has fielded competitive horses at Saratoga in previous meetings.

Moment's Notice (POST 4) at 6-1 for Joe Sharp and Manuel Franco connects with another top jockey. Sharp's previous entry on the card (GARDINER in Race 4) is the favorite, suggesting he sends quality horses. Moment's Notice (POST 4) at 6-1 with Franco represents value if the horse can stalk behind the pace and close in the stretch.

Longshots

Uncle Jim (POST 7) at 10-1 for Rob Atras and Ricardo Santana Jr. is an outside draw in a two-turn route. Atras is a capable trainer who periodically fires with overlooked horses, and Santana at 10-1 in an eight-horse field has exacta/trifecta value.

Solo Jim (POST 8) at 8-1 for Mark Hennig and Junior Alvarado draws the outside post. Hennig is a veteran trainer who has won at Saratoga throughout his career, and while Alvarado is not among the top five riders at the meet, he is a competent professional. The 8-1 price in an eight-horse field with a competent trainer is worth noting in trifectas.

Sergeant Capps (POST 1) at 10-1 for Panagiotis Synnefias and Luis Rivera Jr. is the longshot from the inside. Rivera is not among the meet's prominent riders, and the combination of an obscure trainer and jockey in a competitive allowance makes this a throw-out.

Selections

Win: Big Gain (POST 6) Place: Sea Vista (POST 2) Show: South Bend Tom (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: This race is competitive enough that a box approach has merit. Exacta box: Big Gain (POST 6), Sea Vista (POST 2), South Bend Tom (POST 5). All three have legitimate winning chances. Use Discotheque (POST 3) and Moment's Notice (POST 4) in trifecta positions underneath the top three.

RACE 7 — Post (4:40) — 11f | t | N | NYSStLbrtB150k | BOF | Purse $150,000

Pace Analysis

Eleven furlongs on the inner turf, New York-bred stakes for fillies and mares ($150,000 purse). This is the marquee race of the day and features a nine-horse field with diverse pace styles. She's Country (POST 7) at 2-1 for George Weaver and Manuel Franco is the morning line favorite. Celtic Dawn (POST 5) at 3-1 for Carlos Martin and Javier Castellano is the second choice. With 11 furlongs on the inner turf, pace distribution is critical — horses who can rate at a comfortable position early while conserving energy for the long run home will have an advantage. Into The Unknown (POST 1) and Lifeisbutadream (POST 6) may be involved in early fractions, while the more classically endowed runners will stalk.

Key Contenders

She's Country (POST 7) at 2-1 for George Weaver and Manuel Franco is the class of this New York-bred field. Weaver has been a fixture at Saratoga throughout his training career and has developed a reputation for producing sharp turf runners. Franco, the meet's second-leading rider with 43 wins, provides elite-level tactical intelligence on the inner turf course at 11 furlongs. This is a stakes race where the trainer-jockey combination matters enormously, and Weaver-Franco is the most accomplished pairing in the field. She's Country (POST 7) from post seven in an 11-furlong inner turf race needs to find position early in the long run to the first turn, and Franco is skilled at precisely that.

Celtic Dawn (POST 5) at 3-1 for Carlos Martin and Javier Castellano is a legitimate threat. Castellano is a Hall of Fame rider who, while not currently leading the meet standings, brings unmatched Saratoga experience and tactical brilliance. Martin has done well with fillies in New York-bred conditions, and Celtic Dawn (POST 5) from post five draws a favorable position for a two-turn 11-furlong race on the inner turf. At 3-1, this is a horse that many handicappers will use as their primary alternative to the favorite.

Secondary Choices

Morning Prayer (POST 3) at 4-1 for Thomas Morley and Ricardo Santana Jr. is a well-positioned secondary choice. The three post in an 11-furlong inner turf stakes is advantageous, and Santana at 4-1 represents value given his strong meet totals. Morley may be less prominent than some trainers in this field, but the combination of a favorable post and a top-five rider makes Morning Prayer (POST 3) a genuine alternative.

Combat Move (POST 4) at 6-1 for Linda Rice and Jose Ortiz is the Rice entry in this stakes. Rice is running horses everywhere on this card, and Combat Move (POST 4) with the meet's leading rider is always a legitimate threat. The four post in an 11-furlong inner turf race is excellent — Ortiz can find a stalking position just off the leaders and make a decisive move. At 6-1, this is real value for a Rice-Ortiz combination in a stakes race.

Greyjoy (POST 2) at 6-1 for John Terranova and Tyler Gaffalione is another turf route runner worth monitoring. The two post in an 11-furlong inner turf race is very favorable for position, and Gaffalione's versatility on the turf makes Greyjoy (POST 2) an interesting alternative.

Longshots

Shake Em Off (POST 8) at 12-1 for Michelle Nevin and Flavien Prat is an intriguing longer price. Prat has been exceptional on the Saratoga turf this meet, and a horse at 12-1 with one of the top three riders in the colony deserves consideration in exotics. Shake Em Off (POST 8) from the outside post needs a better trip, but Prat has shown the ability to engineer results from difficult starting positions.

Lifeisbutadream (POST 6) at 15-1 for M. Anthony Ferraro and Kendrick Carmouche is a large price in a nine-horse field. Carmouche is experienced but not among the top five riders at the meet.

Into The Unknown (POST 1) at 20-1 for Rachel Sells and Luis Saez draws the inside post, which is actually favorable at 11 furlongs on the inner turf, but the 20-1 morning line suggests limited competitive form. Saez's riding ability alone won't overcome a large class gap.

Hanna's Hideaway (POST 9) at 15-1 lists Rider TBA, which creates uncertainty and makes this horse difficult to evaluate. The outside post in an 11-furlong inner turf stakes is the worst possible draw.

Selections

Win: She's Country (POST 7) Place: Celtic Dawn (POST 5) Show: Combat Move (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: She's Country (POST 7) is the play of the card in terms of the combination of class, connections, and condition. Exacta: She's Country (POST 7) over Celtic Dawn (POST 5) and Combat Move (POST 4). Combat Move (POST 4) at 6-1 with Ortiz is the value play in this race and should be used aggressively in exactas and trifectas. Shake Em Off (POST 8) with Prat at 12-1 is the best longshot play on the card and belongs in trifecta combinations and long-shot exacta savers.

RACE 8 — Post (5:15) — 11f | T | M | Md 50000 | BUM | Purse $56,000

Pace Analysis

Eleven furlongs on the inner turf, maiden $50,000 claiming race. With 12 horses entered in this marathon maiden claimer on the inner turf, this race presents extreme complexity. The extended 11-furlong distance on the inner turf is a true endurance test, and horses that have shown an ability to relax and travel in turf routes will have an advantage. Paula's Choice (POST 3) at 2-1 is the morning line choice for Jonathan Thomas and Jose Ortiz, while Suited Connectors (POST 12) at 2-1 for Miguel Clement is the other co-favorite. Two Clicks (POST 9) at 4-1 for Bruce Levine and Javier Castellano is the prominent secondary choice. Pace in a 12-horse inner turf marathon will be pedestrian early, with position at the half-mile pole being the critical factor.

Key Contenders

Paula's Choice (POST 3) at 2-1 for Jonathan Thomas and Jose Ortiz draws the three post in an 11-furlong inner turf maiden claimer, which is an excellent starting position for this distance. Ortiz at 2-1 in a maiden claimer is a classic betting favorite scenario — the meet's leading rider rarely misses when paired with a live horse in these conditions. Thomas placing this filly with Ortiz signals intent. The inside draw means she can save ground through the turns in an 11-furlong race, which is a significant advantage.

Suited Connectors (POST 12) at 2-1 for Miguel Clement has the outside post in a 12-horse field at 11 furlongs on the inner turf. The outside post in this situation is a significant disadvantage, as the horse must either use energy to clear the field or be forced extremely wide throughout. The identical 2-1 morning line with Paula's Choice (POST 3) is interesting — both are co-favored, but the post position difference is stark. Rider TBA creates additional uncertainty.

Secondary Choices

Two Clicks (POST 9) at 4-1 for Bruce Levine and Javier Castellano is an attractive secondary option. Castellano brings Hall of Fame credentials to a $50,000 maiden claimer on the turf, which immediately elevates this horse's chances. Levine is a savvy claiming trainer who knows when to enter a horse in a spot where it can be competitive. The nine post in a 12-horse field at 11 furlongs is manageable if the horse is versatile enough to drop back to a stalking position early.

Roasted Reds (POST 10) at 5-1 for Horacio De Paz and Manuel Franco is a live runner. Franco at 5-1 in any race at this Saratoga meet is worth noting, and De Paz has been placing horses competitively throughout the summer. The 10 post in a 12-horse turf marathon is workable for a horse with tactical versatility.

Bounding Along (POST 5) at 6-1 for Richard Dutrow and Flavien Prat is another top-five rider combination in a maiden claimer. The five post is favorable, and Prat-Dutrow in a maiden claimer on the turf represents significant professional muscle.

Raynham Hall (POST 7) at 6-1 for Rudy Rodriguez and Kendrick Carmouche has mid-field positioning in a 12-horse field. Rodriguez is active on this card with multiple entries, and at 6-1, Raynham Hall (POST 7) is worth monitoring.

Longshots

Not Tapping (POST 4) at 8-1 for Thomas Morley and Edgard Zayas occupies an inside-adjacent post. Morley also saddles MORNING PRAYER in Race 7, suggesting stable activity today. At 8-1, this is a price worth examining.

Stella Fortuna (POST 11) at 12-1 for Michael Miceli and Dylan Davis is an outside post in a 12-horse field. Miceli is active on the card today and 12-1 is a fair maiden price if the horse has been working toward a career debut or first start at this level.

Iwokeuplikethis (POST 1) at 20-1 for Michelle Nevin and Jose Lezcano draws the inside rail in an 11-furlong inner turf maiden. The one post is actually advantageous at this distance and on this surface, and Lezcano is a capable rider. The 20-1 morning line, however, suggests very limited form credentials.

Signal Chat (POST 2) at 50-1 for Rachel Sells and Heman Harkie is effectively a throw-out. The 50-1 morning line and the unfamiliar jockey assignment make this a non-contender.

The Gael (POST 6) at 20-1 for David Duggan and Katie Davis, Addagirl Addie (POST 8) at 20-1 for Robbie Davis and Luis Rivera Jr., and Iwokeuplikethis (POST 1) at 20-1 are all priced out of serious consideration for win wagering.

Selections

Win: Paula's Choice (POST 3) Place: Two Clicks (POST 9) Show: Bounding Along (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: Paula's Choice (POST 3) with the inside draw and Ortiz is the clear preference over Suited Connectors (POST 12) despite identical morning line odds. Back Paula's Choice (POST 3) to win and use in exactas over Two Clicks (POST 9), Bounding Along (POST 5), and Roasted Reds (POST 10). Suited Connectors (POST 12) with the outside post and Rider TBA is discounted significantly from the morning line. This 12-horse field requires wide trifecta coverage.

JOCKEY NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Jose Ortiz leads all Saratoga riders with 56 wins through August 17 and holds mounts in nearly every race on today's card. His assignments include Save Us Melania (POST 2) in Race 1, Pronghorn (POST 6) in Race 2, L'eclair (POST 6) in Race 3, Gardiner (POST 7) in Race 4, Engraved (POST 2) in Race 5, Sea Vista (POST 2) in Race 6, Combat Move (POST 4) in Race 7, and Paula's Choice (POST 3) in Race 8. Ortiz is in the midst of a dominant Saratoga campaign and his mounts carry elevated win probability at every class level. When Ortiz is priced at 2-1 or better, the investment is straightforward. His value rides are at prices of 5-1 or higher — specifically Combat Move (POST 4) at 6-1 in Race 7 and Engraved (POST 2) at 6-1 in Race 5.

Manuel Franco (43 wins) is the second-leading rider and appears in Races 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8. His key mounts include Street View (POST 4) in Race 1, Low Country Magic (POST 2) in Race 2, Hot Gossip (POST 7) in Race 3, Mischievous M (POST 5) in Race 4, True Legend (POST 6) in Race 5, Moment's Notice (POST 4) in Race 6, She's Country (POST 7) in Race 7, and Roasted Reds (POST 10) in Race 8. Franco on She's Country (POST 7) in the stakes race is particularly notable.

Flavien Prat (40 wins) brings elite-level turf skill to his assignments. Key Prat mounts include Malu (POST 6) in Race 1, Concurrently (POST 7) in Race 2, Pinky Brier (POST 5) in Race 3, Sultan Hassan (POST 3) in Race 5, South Bend Tom (POST 5) in Race 6, Shake Em Off (POST 8) in Race 7, and Bounding Along (POST 5) in Race 8. Sultan Hassan (POST 3) in Race 5 on the inner turf is a particularly strong spot, as Prat has excelled on the Saratoga turf this summer.

Irad Ortiz Jr. (30 wins) does not appear prominently in today's card based on the listed assignments, which is worth noting — his absence from several races gives other top riders cleaner opportunities in competitive races.

Tyler Gaffalione appears in Race 2 (ULTIMATE AUTHORITY, POST 3), Race 4 (RUNAWAY JOKE, POST 8), Race 5 (STORY OF RORY, POST 8), and Race 7 (GREYJOY, POST 2). Gaffalione has been solid at the meet and Greyjoy (POST 2) in the turf stakes at 6-1 is a value play worth using in exotics.

Javier Castellano, a Hall of Famer and longtime Saratoga giant, appears in Race 7 (CELTIC DAWN, POST 5) and Race 8 (TWO CLICKS, POST 9). Castellano's experience in New York-bred stakes and turf routing makes his mounts live regardless of odds.

TRAINER NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Linda Rice is by far the most active trainer on today's card, saddling runners in five of the eight races. Her most notable stable strategy is running multiple horses in the same race — three horses in Race 3 (BASEBALL LADY, POST 2; SNIDE, POST 3; HOT GOSSIP, POST 7) and two in Race 1 (SAVE US MELANIA, POST 2; SNIDE, POST 3). When Rice doubles or triples in a race, bettors should identify the highest-odds and best-positioned runner to find value, while the lowest-priced favorite deserves primary respect. Her partnership with Jose Ortiz on Save Us Melania (POST 2) in Race 1 and L'eclair (POST 6) in Race 3 marks these as her priority starts.

Chad Brown's double entry in Race 2 (BALLERINA D'ORO, POST 4 and CONCURRENTLY, POST 7) with Franco and Prat respectively is a significant training stable statement. Brown has been one of the most successful trainers in New York racing, and his ability to win with allowance horses at Saratoga is well documented. When Brown enters two horses with top-five riders, at least one of those horses is highly likely to factor.

Steve Asmussen's single entry Pronghorn (POST 6) in Race 2 with Jose Ortiz stands out as a potential single in multi-race wagers. Asmussen-Ortiz combinations produce wins at a high rate across all levels.

Saffie Joseph Jr. enters Ultimate Authority (POST 3) and Midtown Lights (POST 5) in Race 2 — a double from a trainer who has been active at the Spa this summer. Joseph's preferred runner appears to be Ultimate Authority (POST 3) based on morning line differential.

George Weaver is the trainer to watch in Race 7 with She's Country (POST 7) and also saddles True Legend (POST 6) in Race 5. Weaver's turf horses have been sharp throughout the Spa meet, and She's Country (POST 7) in the stakes race with Franco is his banner start of the day.

Joe Sharp doubles in Races 4 and 6 with Gardiner (POST 7) (Race 4, Ortiz) and Moment's Notice (POST 4) (Race 6, Franco). Both horses carry top-five riders and are priced to attract betting interest.

Richard Dutrow saddles All Class (POST 5) in Race 1, L'ECLAIR in Race 3 — wait, L'eclair (POST 6) in Race 3 is actually trained by Dutrow, and he also has Hot Off The Beach (POST 1) in Race 5 and Bounding Along (POST 5) in Race 8. Dutrow has been resurgent in New York and his partnership with top riders signals active stable form.

BEST WAGERING STRATEGIES AND VALUE PLAYS

The card on August 19 at Saratoga is structured beautifully for multi-race exotic wagering. The major value plays and strategic wagering angles are identified here.

The single best value play on the card is Combat Move (POST 4) in Race 7 at 6-1 with Jose Ortiz for Linda Rice. In a New York-bred stakes on the inner turf, the leading rider at the meet with an active trainer who has proven she can win stakes races is massively undervalued at 6-1. While She's Country (POST 7) deserves respect as the morning line choice, Combat Move (POST 4) at 6-1 in an exacta saver or outright alternate win bet represents the best risk-reward combination on the card.

The second-best value play is Shake Em Off (POST 8) in Race 7 at 12-1 with Flavien Prat. Prat is third at the meet with 40 wins, and placing a 12-1 horse in the stakes race reflects either the outside post assignment or limited form at this level — but Prat's turf skill makes this an excellent trifecta or exacta saver candidate.

For the Pick 3, the sequence of Races 5-6-7 offers an intriguing structure. Sultan Hassan (POST 3) is the preference in Race 5 but using Sweetnessthrtyfour (POST 10) and Hot Off The Beach (POST 1) alongside is prudent in a volatile juvenile turf sprint. In Race 6, Big Gain (POST 6) can be used as a single given the Casse-Velazquez credentials, or expanded with Sea Vista (POST 2) and South Bend Tom (POST 5). In Race 7, using She's Country (POST 7), Celtic Dawn (POST 5), and Combat Move (POST 4) as a three-horse spread completes the sequence.

For the Pick 4 covering Races 5-6-7-8, the key single is Paula's Choice (POST 3) in Race 8 — the inside draw with Ortiz in an 11-furlong maiden claimer is as strong an anchor as exists on the card. Use multiple horses in Race 5 (three horses), consider singling or doubling in Race 6, spread in Race 7 (three horses), and anchor with Paula's Choice (POST 3) in Race 8. This structure gives coverage in the volatile juvenile maiden while leveraging the Ortiz single to boost the payoff.

The Pick 5 covering Races 4-8 should be constructed as follows: Use Gardiner (POST 7) as a single or add Treaty Obligation (POST 3) in Race 4. Spread three horses in Race 5. Use Big Gain (POST 6) with at least two alternatives in Race 6. Use three horses in Race 7, anchored by She's Country (POST 7). Anchor with Paula's Choice (POST 3) in Race 8. This structure should yield a manageable ticket at a competitive price.

The best individual race exacta on the card is Race 7: She's Country (POST 7) over Combat Move (POST 4) at what should be a generous mutual. The combination of the 2-1 favorite and a 6-1 Ortiz runner should pay a premium in a nine-horse field that includes a TBA rider and multiple longshots.

For Race 3, the Linda Rice three-horse puzzle is best attacked with an exacta box of L'eclair (POST 6) and Hot Gossip (POST 7) with trifecta coverage adding Huck's Agenda (POST 1). The trifecta payoff could be significant given the confusion created by Rice running three horses and the legitimate outside threats of Huck's Agenda (POST 1) and Cravings (POST 4).

Morning line prices to watch for movement: Combat Move (POST 4) in Race 7 at 6-1 could drift further if casual money goes toward She's Country (POST 7) — any overlay beyond 6-1 on an Ortiz-Rice combination in a stakes race should be played. Shake Em Off (POST 8) in Race 7 at 12-1 with Prat similarly could offer morning line value if the public underweights Prat's turf prowess. In Race 8, the identical 2-1 morning line between Paula's Choice (POST 3) and Suited Connectors (POST 12) creates a structural inefficiency — Paula's Choice (POST 3) with the three post deserves to be the shorter price, and if Suited Connectors (POST 12) drifts to 3-1 or longer based on the TBA rider and outside post, Paula's Choice (POST 3) at any price is a strong win investment.
