Race Day Overview — Saratoga Race Course, Saturday, August 29, 2026

Saratoga Race Course hosts one of the most prestigious single-day racing cards of the year on Saturday, August 29, 2026, anchored by the 157th running of the Grade 1 DraftKings Travers Stakes, the $1.25 million Midsummer Derby. The 13-race program (with a 14th turf card added in the evening) also features four additional Grade 1 races — the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial, the Personal Ensign, the Forego Stakes, and the Ballerina Stakes — plus the Grade 2 Lake Placid. It is one of the premier racing days in North America, drawing the best horses on the continent and a packed grandstand that routinely exceeds 50,000 fans.

The headline storyline is dual Classic winner Golden Tempo (POST 9), trained by Cherie DeVaux and ridden by Jose Ortiz, making his bid to sweep the Travers in the same season he won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. The colt by Curlin is installed as the 5-2 morning-line favorite and enters as the clear favorite in the sport's eyes, but Saratoga's long-standing reputation as the “Graveyard of Favorites” and the “Graveyard of Champions” makes this anything but a formality.

DeVaux also saddles Englishman (POST 4) in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial at 1-1, giving her stable arguably the two most exciting 3-year-old males in the country on the same afternoon. The barn is operating at a high level and has prepared both horses meticulously for this moment.

Other major storylines include the return of Book'em Danno (POST 5) in the Forego, the reigning Champion Male Sprinter looking to claim a sixth Saratoga victory and defend his title at 7 furlongs. Ways And Means (POST 7) enters the Ballerina as the 2-1 favorite with five wins from six starts at the Spa, including the 2024 Test Stakes. Fully Subscribed (POST 2) and Scottish Lassie (POST 4) are co-favorited at 1-1 in the Personal Ensign, setting up what promises to be a riveting matchup in the 10-furlong Grade 1 for older fillies and mares.

Napoleon Solo (POST 3) has been noted as a major Travers threat by barn notes and industry observers, emerging as a dark horse capable of upsetting the Classic winner. Sea Strike (POST 7), trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Flavien Prat from post 7, represents the most dangerous second choice in the Travers at 5-1 morning line.

The card opens with a maiden special weight at 11:05 AM ET and runs through the evening turf card, providing horseplayers with opportunities across the spectrum of surfaces, distances, and class levels.

Weather and Track Conditions — August 29, 2026

Late August at Saratoga typically brings warm, humid conditions, and the Saturday forecast is consistent with the late-season pattern. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit by mid-afternoon, with partly cloudy skies and manageable humidity. No significant rainfall is forecast during racing hours, though overnight moisture from the prior evening could factor into morning track readings.

The main track at Saratoga is expected to be listed as fast for the dirt races, though early morning showers that moved through the region Thursday night may have left residual moisture that could affect the first few races of the day. Track maintenance crews have had Friday and the early Saturday morning hours to work the surface, and by post time for Race 1 at 11:05 AM, the strip should be drying toward a standard fast condition.

The Saratoga turf course has been well-maintained throughout the 2026 meet and is expected to be listed as firm, which historically plays to horses with clean trips and horses that can handle a true ground course. Any morning dew will burn off quickly, and the turf should be playing at peak condition by the time the first turf race goes to post in Race 4 at 12:56 PM.

Track and Post Position Bias — Saratoga Race Course

Saratoga's main track has historically demonstrated a slight inside bias for sprint races, rewarding horses that can secure a position along the rail early. However, this bias is far less pronounced at today's 8-furlong distance than it would be at shorter distances. In route races on the main track, wide trips are not as costly, and closers have historically fared well here, particularly when the pace has been genuine.

For the Travers at 11 furlongs, Saratoga's long stretch — one of the longest on the East Coast — rewards horses with natural stamina and a sustained late kick. Post position is less decisive at classic distances, though outside posts (8 and beyond in a 10-horse field) can create challenges in the first turn if a horse is not immediately forwardly placed. Golden Tempo (POST 9) drawing post 9 is workable given his last-to-first running style, as his connections will simply let him find his position.

On the turf course for the 1 and 3/16-mile races (Races 4, 7, and 14) and the 1 and 1/8-mile Lake Placid (Race 10), inside posts carry a meaningful edge in field compression, and horses that can find the rail early without burning energy are well-positioned. The Saratoga turf inside rail has been kind to Chad Brown's horses throughout the meet, as his stable is exceptionally well-suited to the ground.

For the dirt sprints (Forego and Ballerina at 7 furlongs over 1 and 3/16 miles), the Saratoga track has shown a tendency to favor horses with forward position. Book'em Danno (POST 5) drawing the center of the gate at 7 furlongs is an ideal scenario for a horse of his style. In the Ballerina, Ways And Means (POST 7) has managed wide posts before at Saratoga and won, so her connections will not panic.

RACE 1 — Post (11:05)/10:05/9:05/8:05 — 1320f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | AON | Purse $115,000

Pace Analysis

Eight maidens go 1 mile on the main track to open the card. This is an all-other-than (AON) male maiden special weight at $115,000, a purse level that indicates significant investment from connections and quality breeding. The pace picture will be set by who is willing to assume the lead from the gate. With Up To The Task (POST 3) for Chad Brown and Subjugation (POST 2) for Steve Asmussen likely to receive aggressive early handling, the pace figures to be honest. Beau Valor (POST 6) for George Weaver and Roll Wave (POST 1) on the inside add further complication. This should set up as a genuine pace scenario where closer types benefit.

Key Contenders

Up To The Task (POST 3) is the 2-1 morning-line favorite trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Flavien Prat. Brown has been the dominant trainer at Saratoga for years, and his maiden runners typically arrive well-prepared for their spots. Prat is one of the top jockeys in the country, and this combination commands respect. The question with Brown's maiden runners is always whether they have the experience to handle the pressure of Saratoga's environment on debut or second start. At 2-1, the price is fair for the favorite but leaves little margin for error.

Subjugation (POST 2) draws the two post under Asmussen, who is perennially among the leaders in training wins nationally. Jose Ortiz in the irons is a significant engagement, as Ortiz saves his best efforts for horses he believes in. Asmussen's barn rarely sends out maiden runners at Saratoga without meaningful preparation, and Subjugation (POST 2) at 4-1 offers a fair price as a legitimate alternative.

Secondary Choices

Beau Valor (POST 6) is trained by George Weaver and ridden by John Velazquez, a partnership that has had success at the meet. At 4-1, Beau Valor (POST 6) represents a live secondary option. Weaver's barn has been training nicely and Velazquez at Saratoga is always dangerous. Mission Integrity (POST 8) for Bill Mott at 4-1 is intriguing, as Mott rarely wastes ammunition in maiden races and Junior Alvarado has been riding with confidence throughout the meet. Two Mott horses in the same maiden race is unusual and worth noting — it suggests the barn has a pair of runners it rates similarly, and either could surface.

Longshots

Exhibit (POST 5) for Todd Pletcher at 8-1 with Tyler Gaffalione is a barn that could run any maiden into contention at Saratoga; Pletcher's win rate in maiden specials at the Spa is among the best in the game, and Exhibit (POST 5) should not be dismissed at 8-1.

Roll Wave (POST 1) at 8-1 for trainer Thomas Proctor with Kendrick Carmouche from the rail is a typical outsider that could steal ground on the lead with a clean break, though Proctor's stable has not been at the forefront of the meet's key action.

Roughkin (POST 4) at 10-1 for Bill Mott with Jose Lezcano is the other Mott runner. Being priced higher than stablemate Mission Integrity (POST 8) suggests the connections prefer the latter, but Mott horses at double digits at Saratoga are always worth a second look.

Club Reign (POST 7) at 12-1 for D. Whitworth Beckman and Edgard Zayas is a significant longshot and likely faces a class hurdle against this field of well-connected maidens.

Selections

Win: Up To The Task (POST 3) Place: Subjugation (POST 2) Show: Mission Integrity (POST 8)

Betting strategy: Use Up To The Task (POST 3) on top in exactas with Subjugation (POST 2) and Mission Integrity (POST 8) underneath. A small saver with Beau Valor (POST 6) and Exhibit (POST 5) in the trifecta third slot is advisable given the maiden uncertainty. Single Up To The Task (POST 3) in any multi-leg wagers that start here, but accept the short price only if the track conditions favor a pace-pressuring type.

RACE 2 — Post (11:42)/10:42/9:42/8:42 — 1320f | D | A | Alw 120000n1x | BUN | Purse $120,000

Pace Analysis

Eight males go one mile on the dirt in a non-winners-of-one-other-than allowance. The field is competitive, featuring horses from top barns that have graduated the maiden ranks and are now attempting to move forward. Sculcos Folly (POST 6) at 2-1 for Richard Dutrow with Jose Ortiz is the clear morning-line choice, and the pace will likely be set by Caldo Candy (POST 1) or Gun Range (POST 7) depending on early aggressiveness. This figures to be a genuine pace scenario with multiple speed types.

Key Contenders

Sculcos Folly (POST 6) is the 2-1 morning-line favorite under Richard Dutrow. Dutrow has been a perennial presence at Saratoga and knows how to prepare a horse for this level. With Jose Ortiz handling the reins, this is the horse to beat by consensus. The 2-1 price, however, is thin for an allowance race with this many legitimate options, and Sculcos Folly (POST 6) will need to perform to justify favoritism.

Dr. Kapur (POST 2) at 5-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. with Tyler Gaffalione is a very live contender. Joseph has been among the most active and successful trainers at Saratoga during the 2026 meet, and Gaffalione is riding at a high level. Dr. Kapur (POST 2) figures to be the most dangerous alternative to the favorite.

Secondary Choices

Caldo Candy (POST 1) at 4-1 for Jorge Abreu with Flavien Prat draws the rail and has every chance to set the pace and dictate terms. Prat from the inside at one mile is a dangerous combination, and Caldo Candy (POST 1) could easily wire this field if the pace falls apart.

Gun Range (POST 7) at 6-1 for Wesley Ward with Luis Saez offers pace-pressing potential from a wider post. Ward's horses at Saratoga often improve off their initial efforts, and Saez is one of the best in the business.

Anyway (POST 5) at 6-1 for Linda Rice with Manuel Franco is another legitimate option. Rice has been training effectively at the meet and Anyway (POST 5) could surface at a price.

Longshots

Emphasis (POST 8) at 8-1 for Todd Pletcher with Ricardo Santana Jr. is never a horse to throw out entirely given Pletcher's record at the Spa. At 8-1, if Emphasis (POST 8) has a sharp workout line and a clean trip from post 8, a small investment is worthwhile.

Oil Capital (POST 4) at 10-1 for Linda Rice with Jose Lezcano is a secondary Rice runner that figures to be outrun by the top choices.

Unbroken Chain (POST 3) at 20-1 for Edward Barker with Kendrick Carmouche needs a complete reversal of form to factor here and is not recommended.

Selections

Win: Sculcos Folly (POST 6) Place: Dr. Kapur (POST 2) Show: Caldo Candy (POST 1)

Betting strategy: Sculcos Folly (POST 6) is the play but the price is thin. Exacta box of Sculcos Folly (POST 6) and Dr. Kapur (POST 2) is the primary play. Add Caldo Candy (POST 1) and Gun Range (POST 7) in trifecta combinations. At 2-1, Sculcos Folly (POST 6) is not a strong single in Pick 3 sequences.

RACE 3 — Post (12:19)/11:19/10:19/9:19 — 1430f | D | A | Alw 105000n1x | BUM | Purse $105,000

Pace Analysis

Nine fillies and mares go 1 and 1/16 miles on the dirt in an open allowance for non-winners of one other than. The distance and surface favor closers at Saratoga, and the pace will hinge on Liberty's Secret (POST 8), Lightning Strike (POST 2), and Grazie (POST 7) establishing early position. This shapes up as a contested early pace that should set up well for horses with a late run.

Key Contenders

Liberty's Secret (POST 8) at 2-1 for Patrick Quick and Jose Ortiz is the morning-line favorite. Quick's barn is respected at the meet and Ortiz from post 8 on a closer at 1 and 1/16 miles has the talent to navigate the field and deliver the winner. Liberty's Secret (POST 8) is the consensus top choice and should be used on top in all exotic structures.

Grazie (POST 7) at 4-1 for Todd Pletcher with Flavien Prat is a high-quality alternative. Pletcher's fillies at Saratoga in allowance races are among the most reliable bets on the card year after year, and having Prat aboard instead of a stable rider signals confidence. Grazie (POST 7) at 4-1 offers the best value in the race.

Secondary Choices

Lightning Strike (POST 2) at 3-1 for Miguel Clement with Manuel Franco is another well-credentialed option. Clement is a skilled conditioner for this type of race and Franco has been riding aggressively all meet. Lightning Strike (POST 2) could easily figure here and represents a meaningful threat to the top two choices.

Fabian's Princess (POST 9) at 8-1 for Horacio De Paz with Gaffalione is a horse worth noting. Gaffalione does not take many throwaway mounts and K Gun (POST 6) at 5-1 with Ricardo Santana Jr. from the same barn is another De Paz runner that could be live if the pace is fast enough.

Longshots

Fedupwiththefed (POST 3) at 10-1 for David Donk with John Velazquez is a Velazquez mount worth tracking. Donk's barn has been quietly effective at the Spa, and if Fedupwiththefed (POST 3) produces a top effort, the 10-1 price rewards.

Central To Success (POST 4) at 10-1 for Robert Reid Jr. with Katie Davis is an underdog facing a stiff class test.

Daniella Marie (POST 1) at 15-1 for Chad Summers with Carmouche needs a career-best effort.

Cloudy Chance (POST 5) at 30-1 is not recommended for investment.

Selections

Win: Liberty's Secret (POST 8) Place: Grazie (POST 7) Show: Lightning Strike (POST 2)

Betting strategy: Grazie (POST 7) at 4-1 is the value play in this race. Exacta key Liberty's Secret (POST 8) over Grazie (POST 7) and Lightning Strike (POST 2). Trifecta: Liberty's Secret (POST 8) / Grazie (POST 7) and Lightning Strike (POST 2) / Lightning Strike (POST 2) and Fabian's Princess (POST 9). Consider a small reverse exacta of Grazie (POST 7) over Liberty's Secret (POST 8).

RACE 4 — Post (12:56)/11:56/10:56/9:56 — 1870f | T | AO | OClm 100000n1x | BON | Purse $120,000

Pace Analysis

Mike Beer of the Daily Racing Form has identified Race 4 as his best bet of the day, which draws immediate attention to this optional claiming event on the turf at 1 and 3/16 miles for males. Nine horses contest this $100,000 claiming condition, and the pace should be honest given the distance. The turf at Saratoga at this distance typically produces tactical pace scenarios where inside position is advantageous. Gulfy (POST 9), installed at 1-1 morning line, is the overwhelming favorite, but this race has value underneath.

Key Contenders

Gulfy (POST 9) at 1-1 for Gustavo Rodriguez with Kendrick Carmouche is the heavy morning-line chalk. While the price is prohibitive, Carmouche has been riding well at the meet and 1-1 favorites on turf often reflect legitimate form edges. However, a 1-1 on a turf optional claimer is difficult to support for win betting given the inherent volatility of the surface.

King's Remark (POST 5) at 2-1 for Miguel Clement with Jose Ortiz is the most logical alternative. Clement on the turf at Saratoga is a formidable combination, and having Ortiz aboard suggests the barn is serious about this horse. At 2-1, King's Remark (POST 5) presents better value than the heavy favorite and is the selection for handicappers looking for a play against the chalk.

Secondary Choices

Instability (POST 7) at 4-1 for Chad Brown with Flavien Prat is a significant threat. Brown dominates turf racing at Saratoga and Prat is his go-to rider at the meet. Any Brown-Prat turf combination at Saratoga commands respect, and Instability (POST 7) at 4-1 is well worth including in all exotic wagering.

Print (POST 4) at 4-1 for Robert Ribaudo with Ricardo Santana Jr. is another live contender. Ribaudo has been training well at the meet and Santana has been delivering on live mounts.

Longshots

Alto Blues (POST 8) at 6-1 for Miguel Clement with Manuel Franco is the second Clement runner in the race. Clement running two in the same optional claimer suggests he has live options in both. At 6-1, Alto Blues (POST 8) is a reasonable inclusion in exotic wagers.

Iron Palace (POST 2) at 6-1 for George Weaver with Edgard Zayas is a Weaver turf runner worth noting. Weaver's turf horses at Saratoga have performed consistently.

Noble Dynasty (POST 1) at 8-1 for Bill Mott with Junior Alvarado from the rail is the quintessential Mott turf horse — patient, well-prepared, and capable of producing a sharp effort from an ideal inside post.

Feline Curious (POST 6) at 12-1 for Kelsey Danner with Gaffalione is a long shot but Gaffalione does not typically accept spots without believing in the mount.

Sound Bite (POST 3) at 20-1 for Kerri Raven with Pascacio Lopez is not recommended as a primary investment.

Selections

Win: King's Remark (POST 5) Place: Instability (POST 7) Show: Gulfy (POST 9)

Betting strategy: This is the DRF expert's best bet of the day and merits a deeper look. Fade Gulfy (POST 9) at 1-1 as a win bet and target King's Remark (POST 5) and Instability (POST 7) in exactas and trifectas. Exacta: King's Remark (POST 5) over Instability (POST 7) and Gulfy (POST 9). Trifecta: King's Remark (POST 5) / Instability (POST 7) and Gulfy (POST 9) / Noble Dynasty (POST 1) and Alto Blues (POST 8). A small play on Instability (POST 7) to win offers the best value in the field given the Brown-Prat pedigree on Saratoga turf.

RACE 5 — Post (1:34)/12:34/11:34/10:34 — 1870f | t | A | Alw 105000n1x | BUN | Purse $105,000

Pace Analysis

Thirteen horses enter this allowance at 1 and 3/16 miles on the inner turf. The large field and the inner turf course at Saratoga create a premium on post position and clean trips. Caroline St. Beat (POST 4) and Calling Card (POST 13) are co-favorites at 2-1, which immediately signals a divisive race. The inner turf rewards horses that can settle behind the pace and find a path on the turn. With 13 runners, traffic issues are a real concern for any horse wide of post 6.

Key Contenders

Caroline St. Beat (POST 4) at 2-1 for Miguel Clement with Manuel Franco draws a favorable post on the inner turf and is trained by one of the best grass conditioners in the game. Franco has been an aggressive rider throughout the meet, and from post 4, Caroline St. Beat (POST 4) has every chance to find a good position early. Clement's turf runners at Saratoga are reliable and this one is appropriately priced.

Love Coin (POST 12) at 4-1 for Clement with a TBA rider (which must be monitored for jockey announcement as the day progresses) is the second Clement runner at an interesting price. If Clement's stable has opted to send both, the barn clearly believes in this horse. The TBA jockey designation is the only concern — an announced rider will clarify this entry considerably.

Secondary Choices

Sammy C Note (POST 8) at 4-1 for Michael Miceli with Jose Ortiz is a significant secondary choice. Ortiz taking a mount for a smaller barn at 4-1 in an inner turf allowance suggests he saw something in the past performances. Sammy C Note (POST 8) from post 8 has to deal with a wider trip but Ortiz is skilled enough to navigate a 13-horse inner turf field.

Sir Oscar (POST 9) at 8-1 for George Weaver with Flavien Prat is an intriguing longshot angle. Prat in this spot at 8-1 with a Weaver horse on the inner turf is a value play. Weaver's turf stable at Saratoga has been competitive and PRAT at 8-1 is always worth a look.

Coach Ryan (POST 3) at 8-1 for Chad Brown with Tyler Gaffalione is a brown horse on the inner turf for Brown, which is a consistent threat pattern at Saratoga. At 8-1, Coach Ryan (POST 3) offers real value.

Longshots

Honoree (POST 5) at 6-1 for Claude McGaughey with Jose Lezcano should not be dismissed. McGaughey is a Hall of Fame trainer who targets specific spots carefully, and Honoree (POST 5) at 6-1 represents a live chance from a central post.

Calling Card (POST 13) at 2-1 for Linda Rice with Manuel Franco (though note Franco is also listed on Caroline St. Beat (POST 4) for Clement — this conflict must be confirmed at scratch/rider change time) presents a scheduling question. If Franco rides for Clement, a replacement rider on Calling Card (POST 13) could affect the horse's chances and odds.

Oat Coutour (POST 10) at 8-1 for Chris Englehart with Junior Alvarado is a late outer post horse that will need a clean trip. Alvarado's recent form has been solid.

Newlyn (POST 11) at 15-1 for George Weaver with Ricardo Santana Jr. is a second Weaver entry that may be outrun by the stable's primary choice in Sir Oscar (POST 9).

Zapruder (POST 1) at 20-1 for Dale Romans with J.J. Castellano from the rail on the inner turf is an interesting form angle — Castellano is not a jockey who wastes Saratoga starts on horses he doesn't believe in, and the rail on the inner turf is an asset. A small saver on Zapruder (POST 1) is not unreasonable.

Dreams Of Rome (POST 6) at 20-1 for De Paz and Twirling Lad (POST 7) at 15-1 for De Paz with Edgard Zayas are longshot possibilities from a barn that runs horses to compete, not just fill fields.

Charles J (POST 2) at 15-1 for Joseph Lee with Luis Saez is not typically the sort of horse Saez takes for value, making this a mild watch.

Selections

Win: Caroline St. Beat (POST 4) Place: Sammy C Note (POST 8) Show: Coach Ryan (POST 3)

Betting strategy: Confirm jockey assignments for Love Coin (POST 12) and Calling Card (POST 13) before wagering. Build trifectas and superfectas using Caroline St. Beat (POST 4) and Sammy C Note (POST 8) on top, spreading to Coach Ryan (POST 3), Sir Oscar (POST 9), and Honoree (POST 5) in the third and fourth slots. The large field in a 13-horse inner turf race makes superfectas appealing at a relatively low cost per combination. Zapruder (POST 1) is a 20-1 saver that could pay handsomely if Romans fires a sharp effort.

RACE 6 — Post (2:09)/1:09/12:09/11:09 — 1320f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | AOF | Purse $115,000

Pace Analysis

Ten fillies contest a one-mile maiden special weight. Multiple speed horses are in the field, setting up a contested pace scenario. Foxiest (POST 3) for Brad Cox is the 2-1 morning-line choice, while Cruising Again (POST 10) and Badittude (POST 1) represent forward types that will pressure early. The shape of this race could favor a presser or closer if the pace gets hot.

Key Contenders

Foxiest (POST 3) at 2-1 for Brad Cox with Manuel Franco is the morning-line chalk. Cox has been among the best trainers in America in recent years and his maiden fillies at Saratoga arrive fit and ready. Franco has been riding aggressively throughout the meet and from post 3, Foxiest (POST 3) has an ideal positioning scenario to track the pace and pounce.

Cruising Again (POST 10) at 4-1 for Dale Romans with Kendrick Carmouche draws the widest post but Romans has been quietly effective at the meet. Carmouche navigating a wide post on a 4-1 shot in a maiden special weight is a legitimate value play.

Secondary Choices

Badittude (POST 1) at 6-1 for Todd Pletcher with Tyler Gaffalione draws the rail. Pletcher's maiden fillies at Saratoga represent some of the most reliably competitive horses on any card, and at 6-1, Badittude (POST 1) is underpriced relative to the quality of the barn.

Virabhadrasana (POST 2) at 6-1 for Kinnon LaRose with Ricardo Santana Jr. is a curious entry. LaRose is a smaller operation, but Santana's engagement at 6-1 suggests this filly has shown something in the morning.

Psalm Beauty (POST 9) at 8-1 for Steve Asmussen with Jose Ortiz is another horse that demands attention whenever Ortiz accepts the mount for a maiden filly at this price at Saratoga. Asmussen's barn is consistently competitive.

Longshots

Letter Of Credit (POST 5) at 8-1 for Chad Brown with Flavien Prat is a Brown-Prat combination in a maiden race, which is automatically worth tracking. At 8-1, Letter Of Credit (POST 5) is worth a small investment.

Quella (POST 7) at 15-1 for Chad Brown with Luis Saez is the second Brown runner, priced higher and presumably the second preference of the barn.

Saytara (POST 6) at 10-1 for Todd Pletcher with John Velazquez is a Pletcher-Velazquez combination that has historically been dangerous at Saratoga. At 10-1, this is a legitimate exotic inclusion.

Wharfie (POST 8) at 12-1 for Bill Mott with Jose Lezcano rounds out the field of horses worth a small inclusion. Mott's maiden fillies have historically fired first or second out.

Call Me (POST 4) at 30-1 for Rudy Rodriguez is not recommended.

Selections

Win: Foxiest (POST 3) Place: Badittude (POST 1) Show: Cruising Again (POST 10)

Betting strategy: Foxiest (POST 3) is the most reliable selection in the race but 2-1 is thin. Build exactas keying Foxiest (POST 3) over Badittude (POST 1), Psalm Beauty (POST 9), and Letter Of Credit (POST 5). Trifecta spread: Foxiest (POST 3) / Badittude (POST 1) and Cruising Again (POST 10) / Psalm Beauty (POST 9) and Saytara (POST 6). A small win bet on Badittude (POST 1) at 6-1 represents real value given Pletcher's Saratoga maiden record.

RACE 7 — Post (2:44)/1:44/12:44/11:44 — 1870f | T | AO | OClm 100000n1x | BOF | Purse $120,000

Pace Analysis

Ten fillies and mares contest the female version of the turf optional claiming at 1 and 3/16 miles. Bella Knows (POST 3) at 2-1 for Brad Cox and Tahlequah (POST 10) at 2-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. are co-favorites with TBA jockey, mirroring the pattern from Race 4 where two horses share morning-line status. Shelzawa (POST 5) at 3-1 for Chad Brown and Flavien Prat is the key value play.

Key Contenders

Bella Knows (POST 3) at 2-1 for Brad Cox with Manuel Franco is a highly regarded turf mare who figures to be competitive at this level. Cox's turf operation has been formidable, and Bella Knows (POST 3) from post 3 on the Saratoga turf at 1 and 3/16 miles is a favorable setup.

Shelzawa (POST 5) at 3-1 for Chad Brown with Flavien Prat is the value selection. Brown and Prat on the Saratoga turf in an optional claiming is one of the most reliable patterns in the game. At 3-1, Shelzawa (POST 5) is attractively priced and should be used aggressively in all exotic wagering.

Secondary Choices

Counterintuitive (POST 9) at 4-1 for Chad Brown with Jose Ortiz is the second Brown entry in the same race, and the fact that both Brown horses are well-priced suggests the barn has two legitimate runners. Counterintuitive (POST 9) with Ortiz at 4-1 is a meaningful secondary option.

Tahlequah (POST 10) at 2-1 with TBA jockey needs a confirmed rider before full commitment. The price will likely move based on the jockey announcement.

Longshots

All Of It (POST 1) at 8-1 for Miguel Clement with Ricardo Santana Jr. from the rail is the kind of horse Clement places carefully. On the Saratoga turf from post 1, ANY Clement runner deserves respect.

Paige Turner (POST 8) at 8-1 for Cherie DeVaux with John Velazquez is a trainer that will have her barn firing on all cylinders today given the Travers and Jerkens entries. Paige Turner (POST 8) at 8-1 with Velazquez could be a live longshot.

River Ride (POST 6) at 8-1 for Claude McGaughey with Jose Lezcano is from a barn that picks spots carefully, and McGaughey's presence in this optional claiming race with River Ride (POST 6) suggests he sees an opportunity.

Code (POST 7) at 10-1 for Todd Pletcher with Tyler Gaffalione is a Pletcher turf runner at double digits — always worth a small inclusion.

Cosmic Candy Girl (POST 2) at 12-1 for James Ryerson and Samartina (POST 4) at 20-1 for Roy Lerman are longer shots that figure to be outrun by the market's top choices.

Selections

Win: Shelzawa (POST 5) Place: Bella Knows (POST 3) Show: Counterintuitive (POST 9)

Betting strategy: Shelzawa (POST 5) is the primary value play at 3-1 in a race where the co-favorites at 2-1 are both legitimate. Exacta box of Shelzawa (POST 5), Bella Knows (POST 3), and Counterintuitive (POST 9). Trifecta key Shelzawa (POST 5) over Bella Knows (POST 3), Counterintuitive (POST 9), and All Of It (POST 1). Confirm Tahlequah (POST 10) jockey before deciding whether to include in exotic wagers.

RACE 8 — Post (3:19)/2:19/1:19/12:19 — 1540f | D | G1 | HAJrknsM-G1 | BON | Purse $500,000

Pace Analysis

The 157th running of the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial is a six-horse field at 1 and 1/16 miles on the main track. This is the perfect spot for one of the most anticipated races of the season: Englishman (POST 4) at 1-1 for Cherie DeVaux, trained to take on older horses. The pace picture will be defined early by who is willing to go after Englishman (POST 4). With Deep Flame (POST 2) as a 3-1 second choice and Local Knowledge (POST 5) at 4-1 as a pace factor, the race could develop into a front-running performance by the favorite or a late-running effort if the pace is pushed.

The Jerkens is a Grade 1 for 3-year-olds at weight-for-age against older horses, and the historical pattern is that elite 3-year-olds who enter this race with strong Classic form are well-equipped to handle older competition at this distance.

Key Contenders

Englishman (POST 4) at 1-1 for Cherie DeVaux with Jose Ortiz is the undisputed morning-line favorite and the horse that barn notes and industry observers identify as one of the two most exciting 3-year-olds in the country. Per the Saratoga notebook, trainer DeVaux notes that Englishman (POST 4) “doesn't have to take a backseat to anyone,” a statement that carries real weight from a conditioner who has Golden Tempo (POST 9 in Race 13) as her stable star. The fact that DeVaux expresses this level of confidence in Englishman (POST 4) ahead of the Jerkens is telling. Jose Ortiz is an elite rider who delivers on big days and the 1-1 price, while thin, reflects an accurate assessment of this horse's ability versus this field.

Deep Flame (POST 2) at 3-1 for Brad Cox with Flavien Prat is the most logical danger. Cox has had a productive Saratoga meet and Prat is a natural fit on turf and dirt alike. From post 2, Deep Flame (POST 2) has an excellent chance to sit just behind the pace and make a run in the stretch. At 3-1, Deep Flame (POST 2) is the primary banker alternative.

Secondary Choices

Local Knowledge (POST 5) at 4-1 for Todd Pletcher with John Velazquez is a formidable secondary option. Pletcher and Velazquez targeting a Grade 1 on Travers Day is always serious, and Local Knowledge (POST 5) at 4-1 should not be dismissed. If Englishman (POST 4) encounters traffic or a pace that does not suit, Local Knowledge (POST 5) could easily move up.

Solitude Dude (POST 3) at 6-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. with Tyler Gaffalione is a horse that could outrun his odds if the pace collapses or gets extremely honest. At 6-1, Solitude Dude (POST 3) is worth a small exotic inclusion.

Longshots

Amberjack (POST 6) at 30-1 for Jorge Delgado with J.J. Castellano is a significant longshot. Castellano rarely accepts mounts at 30-1 without something to offer, and in a short six-horse field, anything can happen in a Grade 1. A minimal saver is not unreasonable.

Stickupwithoutagun (POST 1) at 30-1 for Ilkay Kantarmaci with Manuel Franco is a horse that will struggle against this elite field.

Selections

Win: Englishman (POST 4) Place: Deep Flame (POST 2) Show: Local Knowledge (POST 5)

Betting strategy: Despite the 1-1 price, Englishman (POST 4) is worth a moderate win bet given the confidence from the DeVaux stable and the quality of the preparation. Exacta: Englishman (POST 4) over Deep Flame (POST 2) and Local Knowledge (POST 5). Trifecta: Englishman (POST 4) / Deep Flame (POST 2) and Local Knowledge (POST 5) / Solitude Dude (POST 3) and Amberjack (POST 6). In the Pick 4 or Pick 5 beginning here, Englishman (POST 4) can be used as a single if the other legs offer legitimate angles, as the odds pay more elsewhere in the sequence.

RACE 9 — Post (3:55)/2:55/1:55/12:55 — 1980f | D | G1 | PrsnlEns-G1 | BUM | Purse $500,000

Pace Analysis

The Personal Ensign is one of the most prestigious Grade 1 races in North America for fillies and mares, contested at 1 and 1/4 miles on the main track. Six horses enter, and the race is headed by co-favorites Fully Subscribed (POST 2) at 1-1 for Chad Brown and Flavien Prat, and Scottish Lassie (POST 4) at 1-1 for Jorge Abreu and Jose Ortiz. The pace at 10 furlongs will be steady, set by Speed Shopper (POST 5) or potentially front-running types in the field, but the race ultimately will be decided in the long Saratoga stretch.

Key Contenders

Fully Subscribed (POST 2) at 1-1 for Chad Brown with Flavien Prat is arguably the premier filly or mare on the East Coast and a legitimate Breeders' Cup Classic-distance prospect. Brown's operations at Saratoga have been exceptional throughout the meet, and having Prat aboard a horse he clearly trusts at 10 furlongs is the formula the stable has used successfully all season. Fully Subscribed (POST 2) from post 2 at the Personal Ensign distance has historical precedent for success — the inside post at a mile and a quarter allows a horse to relax early and build momentum.

Scottish Lassie (POST 4) at 1-1 for Jorge Abreu with Jose Ortiz is the co-favorite and the most dangerous rival. Abreu is one of the hottest trainers in the game and Ortiz aboard a major Grade 1 contender on Travers Day is a serious proposition. The 1-1 price on Scottish Lassie (POST 4) suggests the market views this as a genuine 50-50 matchup between the two top choices.

Secondary Choices

Nerazurri (POST 3) at 6-1 for Mark Casse with Luis Saez is the most interesting alternative. Casse is a skilled conditioner for big race days, and Nerazurri (POST 3) at 6-1 in a six-horse field at 1 and 1/4 miles is worth including in all exotic wagers. Saez consistently delivers at Saratoga.

Snowyte (POST 6) at 8-1 for Danny Gargan with Junior Alvarado is an outsider that could surface if the pace gets unusually hot between the co-favorites. Snowyte (POST 6) at 8-1 is a legitimate trifecta inclusion.

Longshots

Speed Shopper (POST 5) at 12-1 for William Walden with John Velazquez is an interesting longshot angle. Velazquez is a Hall of Famer who saves his best work for horses he believes in, and Speed Shopper (POST 5) at 12-1 could cause damage if allowed to steal the lead unchallenged.

Margie's Intention (POST 1) at 12-1 for Brad Cox with Manuel Franco is the second Cox runner, priced significantly higher than Fully Subscribed (POST 2). This is a barn preference situation and Margie's Intention (POST 1) figures to be outrun by the stable's primary entry.

Selections

Win: Fully Subscribed (POST 2) Place: Scottish Lassie (POST 4) Show: Nerazurri (POST 3)

Betting strategy: At 1-1, both top choices are difficult to use as standalone win bets. The best strategy is an exacta box of Fully Subscribed (POST 2) and Scottish Lassie (POST 4). Trifecta: Box of Fully Subscribed (POST 2), Scottish Lassie (POST 4), and Nerazurri (POST 3). Add Snowyte (POST 6) to the trifecta's third slot. A $2 exacta box of the two favorites will return modest profits but is a reasonable play on a race where the top two are clearly separated from the field. Avoid using either co-favorite as singles in multi-leg sequences given the genuine competition from the other.

RACE 10 — Post (4:33)/3:33/2:33/1:33 — 1760f | t | G2 | LakePlcd-G2 | BOF | Purse $400,000

Pace Analysis

The Grade 2 Lake Placid is a 1 and 1/8-mile inner turf race for 3-year-old fillies, a prestigious prep race that has historically produced major autumn campaigners. Nine fillies enter, and the pace will be set by the quicker types in the field. Queen Of Hawaii (POST 1) at 2-1 for Philip Antonacci with Jose Ortiz draws the ideal rail post on the inner turf and is the morning-line favorite. Naomis (POST 5) at 3-1 for Chad Brown with Flavien Prat and Deep Learning (POST 4) at 4-1 for Chad Brown with Manuel Franco are the second and third choices, with the Brown barn sending a formidable pair.

Key Contenders

Queen Of Hawaii (POST 1) at 2-1 for Philip Antonacci with Jose Ortiz draws the most advantageous post in the race. On Saratoga's inner turf at 1 and 1/8 miles, the rail is a tremendous asset, and Queen Of Hawaii (POST 1) with Ortiz has the chance to save ground throughout the entire race. Antonacci is a trainer who targets specific opportunities and the Lake Placid appears to be the plan here.

Naomis (POST 5) at 3-1 for Chad Brown with Flavien Prat is the horse that most observers will identify as the primary threat. Brown's 3-year-old turf fillies at Saratoga have an exceptional record, and Prat aboard a Grade 2 contender at the inner turf distance is a formidable combination. Naomis (POST 5) from post 5 has a reasonable position draw to find the pace and make a sustained run.

Secondary Choices

Deep Learning (POST 4) at 4-1 for Chad Brown with Manuel Franco is the second Brown entry and at 4-1 is attractively priced relative to stablemate Naomis (POST 5) at 3-1. In a situation where both Brown horses are live, the 4-1 offers better returns and Deep Learning (POST 4) with Franco from post 4 has an excellent positioning scenario.

East Jabip (POST 9) at 6-1 for Todd Pletcher with Tyler Gaffalione is a Pletcher 3-year-old turf filly at 6-1, which is always a competitive angle in a Grade 2. East Jabip (POST 9) from the widest post will need a ground-saving trip, which is more difficult from post 9 on the inner turf, but Gaffalione is skilled enough to navigate.

Longshots

Nonconsecutivetrms (POST 7) at 12-1 for Brendan Walsh with John Velazquez is an interesting combination. Walsh is a skilled turf trainer and Velazquez at 12-1 in a Grade 2 represents a potential value overlay. Nonconsecutivetrms (POST 7) is worth including in trifectas.

Ultimate Love (POST 8) at 8-1 for Michael Trombetta with Pascacio Lopez is a horse that could outrun her odds if the pace is contentious.

Kokomotion (POST 2) at 12-1 for D. Whitworth Beckman with Edgard Zayas is a longshot that will need a significant career improvement.

Flowerhead (POST 3) at 15-1 for Charlie Clover with Ricardo Santana Jr. is not a primary investment.

Oscar Bound (POST 6) at 30-1 for Melanie Giddings is not recommended.

Selections

Win: Naomis (POST 5) Place: Queen Of Hawaii (POST 1) Show: Deep Learning (POST 4)

Betting strategy: The Brown barn sends two live contenders and Naomis (POST 5) is the primary preference based on jockey assignment. However, in exotic wagering, include both Naomis (POST 5) and Deep Learning (POST 4) widely. Exacta key Queen Of Hawaii (POST 1) and Naomis (POST 5) over each other and Deep Learning (POST 4). Trifecta: Naomis (POST 5) and Queen Of Hawaii (POST 1) / Deep Learning (POST 4) and East Jabip (POST 9) / Nonconsecutivetrms (POST 7) and Ultimate Love (POST 8). The Brown stable's dual presence makes this a race where spreading is advisable.

RACE 11 — Post (5:11)/4:11/3:11/2:11 — 1540f | D | G1 | Forego-G1 | BUN | Purse $500,000

Pace Analysis

The Grade 1 Forego Stakes at 7 furlongs on the main track is the premier sprint race of Travers Day. Eight males enter, headlined by Book'em Danno (POST 5) at 1-1, the reigning Champion Male Sprinter who is shooting for his sixth win at Saratoga. The pace at 7 furlongs figures to be contested, as multiple horses will want to establish position early. Tip Top Thomas (POST 1) for Todd Pletcher from the rail could press the pace, while Senior Officer (POST 6) for Brad Cox with Luis Saez figures as the most dangerous late runner. The pace here should be honest enough for a come-from-behind type to make a move.

Key Contenders

Book'em Danno (POST 5) at 1-1 for Derek Ryan with Pascacio Lopez is one of the most dominant sprinters on the continent and enters this race having won five previous times at Saratoga. The reigning Champion Male Sprinter from post 5 at 7 furlongs is the ideal setup for a horse of his style. Despite the 1-1 price, Book'em Danno (POST 5) is a horse with a legitimate claim to favoritism — his record at the Spa is exceptional and his current form is excellent. Unlike some 1-1 shots at Saratoga, Book'em Danno (POST 5) has repeatedly proven himself at the highest level at this exact venue.

Senior Officer (POST 6) at 4-1 for Brad Cox with Luis Saez is the most formidable rival. Cox's horses have been sharp all meet, and Senior Officer (POST 6) from post 6 at 7 furlongs has room to maneuver and make a classic closing move. At 4-1, Senior Officer (POST 6) is well-priced as the primary opposition.

Secondary Choices

Tip Top Thomas (POST 1) at 5-1 for Todd Pletcher with Flavien Prat draws the rail at 7 furlongs, which can be advantageous from a positional standpoint if the horse is forwardly placed early. Pletcher's sprint horses at Saratoga have a solid record and Tip Top Thomas (POST 1) at 5-1 is a legitimate exotic inclusion.

Banishing (POST 7) at 10-1 for David Jacobson with Tyler Gaffalione is a horse that could outrun his odds. Jacobson has trained effective sprinters before and Gaffalione at 10-1 in a Grade 1 sprint suggests this horse has shown something.

Longshots

Bring The Smoke (POST 8) at 10-1 for D. Whitworth Beckman with Jose Ortiz is interesting purely from a jockey angle. Ortiz accepting a 10-1 mount in the Forego is worth a minimal investigation, as he typically rides to win.

Hymn (POST 2) at 12-1 for Ronald Moquett with Ricardo Santana Jr. is a longer shot that could benefit from an honest pace.

Crazy Mason (POST 4) at 12-1 for Gregory Sacco with Manuel Franco is a local trainer who knows how to prepare horses for this track. At 12-1 in a Grade 1 sprint, Crazy Mason (POST 4) is a small saver.

T Kraft (POST 3) at 20-1 for Bill Mott with Junior Alvarado is a significant longshot but the Mott name always commands respect.

Selections

Win: Book'em Danno (POST 5) Place: Senior Officer (POST 6) Show: Tip Top Thomas (POST 1)

Betting strategy: Despite the 1-1 price, Book'em Danno (POST 5) can be used as a single in Pick 4 and Pick 5 sequences that start at Race 11 given his exceptional Saratoga record. Exacta: Book'em Danno (POST 5) over Senior Officer (POST 6) and Tip Top Thomas (POST 1). Trifecta: Book'em Danno (POST 5) / Senior Officer (POST 6) and Tip Top Thomas (POST 1) / Banishing (POST 7) and Bring The Smoke (POST 8). A small win bet on Senior Officer (POST 6) at 4-1 is a reasonable hedge against the heavy favorite.

RACE 12 — Post (5:49)/4:49/3:49/2:49 — 1540f | D | G1 | Balrina-G1 | BUM | Purse $500,000

Pace Analysis

The Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes at 7 furlongs for fillies and mares features twelve runners, headlined by Ways And Means (POST 7) at 2-1, who enters with five wins from six starts at Saratoga, including the 2024 Test Stakes. The pace in the Ballerina will be contested with a large field of 12 runners, which creates the potential for a chaotic early portion of the race. Eclatant (POST 12) at 3-1 for Brad Cox with Manuel Franco is the second choice and the primary danger. R Disaster (POST 10) at 5-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. with Tyler Gaffalione figures as a key pace factor.

Key Contenders

Ways And Means (POST 7) at 2-1 for Chad Brown with Flavien Prat has made Saratoga her home track, winning five of six starts here. Her only defeat at the Spa was a second-place finish. The 5-year-old mare enters the Ballerina with a supreme record at this track and at 7 furlongs, and the combination of Brown and Prat gives her the best possible handling. At 2-1 in a 12-horse field, Ways And Means (POST 7) is a legitimate favorite and represents the best chance of the top-priced horses to justify her odds.

Eclatant (POST 12) at 3-1 for Brad Cox with Manuel Franco draws the widest post in a 12-horse field. At 7 furlongs, wide posts are not ideal, and Eclatant (POST 12) will need to overcome some early ground loss. However, Cox's mare is a serious rival at 3-1, and the price reflects her legitimate class edge.

Secondary Choices

R Disaster (POST 10) at 5-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. with Tyler Gaffalione is the most interesting secondary choice. At 5-1, R Disaster (POST 10) represents value in a competitive Grade 1, and Gaffalione has had an excellent Saratoga meet. From post 10, this filly will need a clean break but has the ability to contest the pace or close into a contested fractions scenario.

Kilwin (POST 2) at 8-1 for George Arnold II with Jose Ortiz is worth monitoring. Arnold's stable has had recent success and Ortiz at 8-1 in a Grade 1 for fillies and mares suggests a live mount. Kilwin (POST 2) from post 2 has a clean inside draw.

Longshots

Usha (POST 4) at 12-1 for Bob Baffert with John Velazquez is a significant longshot but the Baffert-Velazquez combination in a Grade 1 is never to be completely dismissed. Usha (POST 4) at 12-1 is worth a small exotic inclusion.

Echo Sound (POST 1) at 15-1 for George Arnold II with Luis Saez is the second Arnold entry. From the rail at 7 furlongs in a 12-horse field, Echo Sound (POST 1) could find a ground-saving trip.

Beauty Reigns (POST 11) at 15-1 for Bill Mott with Junior Alvarado is a Mott Grade 1 entry at double digits, which is always a horse to keep in your peripheral vision.

Maida (POST 8) at 10-1 for Brittany Russell with Sheldon Russell is a trainer-jockey combination worth noting as Maida (POST 8) could offer value if Russell fires a sharp effort.

Munnings Express (POST 3) at 30-1 for Linda Rice, Grammy Girl (POST 5) at 30-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr., Kappa Kappa (POST 6) at 30-1 for Robert Reid Jr., and Paradise City (POST 9) at 30-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. are all significant longshots that figure to be outrun by the top choices.

Selections

Win: Ways And Means (POST 7) Place: Eclatant (POST 12) Show: R Disaster (POST 10)

Betting strategy: Ways And Means (POST 7) is the most compelling win bet of the three Grade 1 afternoon races (Jerkens, Forego, Ballerina) given her Saratoga record and the 2-1 price in a 12-horse field. Exacta: Ways And Means (POST 7) over Eclatant (POST 12) and R Disaster (POST 10). Trifecta: Ways And Means (POST 7) / Eclatant (POST 12) and R Disaster (POST 10) / Kilwin (POST 2) and Usha (POST 4) and Beauty Reigns (POST 11). Ways And Means (POST 7) is an excellent single in Pick 3 and Pick 4 structures.

RACE 13 — Post (6:35)/5:35/4:35/3:35 — 2200f | D | G1 | Travers-G1 | BON | Purse $1,250,000

Pace Analysis

The 157th running of the Grade 1 DraftKings Travers Stakes at 1 and 3/8 miles is the main event of the year at Saratoga. Ten males enter, led by dual Classic winner Golden Tempo (POST 9) at 5-2 for Cherie DeVaux and Jose Ortiz. The Travers at 11 furlongs is a true test of classic stamina, and the long Saratoga stretch rewards horses with a genuine late kick.

The pace picture shapes up as follows: Baby Vino (POST 8) for Lindsay Schultz with Pascacio Lopez and The Puma (POST 4) for Gustavo Delgado with J.J. Castellano could establish the early pace, with Renegade (POST 5) for Todd Pletcher and Tyler Gaffalione pressing from close range. Napoleon Solo (POST 3) for Chad Summers with John Velazquez has been identified by barn note observers as a horse that will be tracking the pace. Golden Tempo (POST 9) is described as a last-to-first runner — the Curlin colt won the Derby and Belmont with a sweeping late run and figures to be last or near last for much of this race before making his explosive move.

If the pace is honest — which is likely given the caliber of the field and multiple horses with forward tendencies — Golden Tempo (POST 9) sets up perfectly for a come-from-behind performance. The 11-furlong distance of the Travers historically rewards horses with deep reserves of stamina, and Golden Tempo (POST 9) has demonstrated those reserves in both the Derby and the Belmont.

Key Contenders

Golden Tempo (POST 9) at 5-2 for Cherie DeVaux with Jose Ortiz is the horse of the moment in American racing. A dual Classic winner arriving at Saratoga with an unbeaten Triple Crown campaign (he won both the Derby and the Belmont as a last-to-first runner) is a horse that demands full respect. DeVaux has been meticulous in her preparation, and the barn notes confirm the colt is fit and ready. Post 9 in a 10-horse field is workable for a closer — Ortiz will position him comfortably off the pace and ask him to deliver his trademark burst in the final three furlongs.

Renegade (POST 5) at 3-1 for Todd Pletcher with Tyler Gaffalione is the morning-line second choice and the most formidable rival by odds. Pletcher targeting the Travers is always serious, and at 3-1, Renegade (POST 5) is well-positioned in the draw to press or stalk the pace from post 5. Gaffalione has been exceptional throughout the Saratoga meet and is fully capable of executing the tactical race Pletcher will need. Renegade (POST 5) is the primary danger to Golden Tempo (POST 9).

Sea Strike (POST 7) at 5-1 for Chad Brown with Flavien Prat is the second-most dangerous rival. Brown has won this race multiple times and knows exactly how to prepare a horse for the Travers. Prat from post 7 on a horse with Brown's strategic planning is a formidable combination. Sea Strike (POST 7) at 5-1 is attractively priced and represents the single best value in the race.

Secondary Choices

Napoleon Solo (POST 3) at 8-1 for Chad Summers with John Velazquez has been discussed extensively in barn notes and industry circles as a horse that could challenge the favorites. The TDN Saratoga Notebook specifically identified Napoleon Solo (POST 3) as the one the rivals have to catch in the Travers, a striking endorsement for an 8-1 morning-line shot. Summers is a capable conditioner who has brought this horse along carefully, and Velazquez's commitment to the mount is significant. At 8-1, Napoleon Solo (POST 3) is the most attractive alternative in terms of value.

The Puma (POST 4) at 8-1 for Gustavo Delgado with J.J. Castellano is an interesting longshot. Castellano is a Hall of Famer who delivers on big race days and his acceptance of this mount at 8-1 in the Travers suggests The Puma (POST 4) has legitimate credentials.

Leading Change (POST 2) at 12-1 for Brad Cox with Manuel Franco is a horse that should not be dismissed entirely. Cox sends horses to win, not to run, and Leading Change (POST 2) at 12-1 from post 2 could find an ideal stalking position.

Longshots

Emerging Market (POST 1) at 15-1 for Chad Brown with Ricardo Santana Jr. is the second Brown runner in the Travers. Brown running two in the Travers — Sea Strike (POST 7) as the primary and EMERGING
