Race Day Overview — Saratoga Race Course, Thursday, June 4, 2026
Saratoga Race Course kicks off its Belmont Stakes week festivities on Thursday, June 4, with a loaded 11-race card that serves as an important appetizer before Saturday's Grade 1 showcase. The day features two graded stakes events — the Grade 3 Pennine Ridge at 1 7/8 miles on turf in Race 3 and the Grade 2 Intercontinental at 1 1/16 miles on turf in Race 8, along with the Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup at 2 3/16 miles on turf in Race 10 — giving serious bettors multiple high-quality wagering opportunities. The balance of the card is rounded out by maiden special weights, one condition claiming sprint, and a pair of open claiming routes that offer sharp angles throughout the afternoon.
With the Belmont Stakes field already drawn and attention focused on Saturday's nine-horse field, Thursday's card at Saratoga draws strong trainer representation from the usual New York powerhouses. Todd Pletcher, Chad Brown, Claude McGaughey, Bill Mott, and Steve Asmussen all have multiple entries, and the jockey colony is as strong as it gets, with Flavien Prat, Irad Ortiz Jr., Jose Ortiz, Tyler Gaffalione, and John Velazquez all active throughout the day.
The Jersey Girl Stakes (Race 2) is a black-type feature for older fillies and mares going one and three-sixteenth miles on dirt, worth $175,000, which adds further graded context to what shapes up as a rich Thursday afternoon program. The Pennine Ridge-G3 (Race 3) is a premier long-distance turf route that historically attracts horses with strong European breeding, making form analysis particularly nuanced. The Intercontinental-G2 (Race 8) targets older fillies and mares on the turf sprint course, while the Belmont Gold Cup-G2 (Race 10) is the signature staying turf race of the meet and one of the marquee events on this particular card.
Race 1
Post time for Race 1 is 12:35 PM Eastern.
Weather and Track Conditions
Saratoga is tracking partly cloudy conditions for Thursday, June 4, with temperatures expected in the mid-70s Fahrenheit and humidity that is seasonably elevated for the Capital Region. No significant precipitation is anticipated during the racing program, which should allow both the main track and turf course to remain in their current conditions.
The Saratoga main track has been labeled as fast for the recent Belmont Stakes week training sessions, which is consistent with dry weather patterns that have dominated upstate New York in recent days. Rail positioning on the dirt has been a topic of conversation early in the Saratoga spring meet, with reports suggesting the inside portion of the track is carrying speed well and that horses stalking from second or third position tend to fare best. However, the main track has not shown an extreme speed bias.
On the turf, the Saratoga course has been rated firm in recent days, which is ideal for the three turf stakes on today's program. A firm Saratoga turf course historically plays somewhat to the outside post positions in longer routes, particularly in races where pace is honest and horses angle out for a cleaner trip. In sprints on the turf, the rail can be extremely advantageous when the course is firm and compacted. The inside rail has been placed at its standard position for early Belmont week racing, providing a fresh ground path on the rail.
The Saratoga turf course is regarded as one of the most demanding in North America, and the 1 7/8-mile Pennine Ridge distance and the 2 3/16-mile Belmont Gold Cup will test horses' ability to handle the undulations and turns of the Saratoga layout at extended distances.
Track Bias and Post Position Analysis
On the Saratoga main track at sprint distances — particularly the 1 1/16-mile and 6-furlong configurations — early speed from inside posts has historically performed well when the track is fast. However, the 1 5/16-mile dirt distance in Race 6 and the 1 1/4-mile routes on dirt tend to level the playing field, as the long run to the first turn allows outside speed horses to secure position. For today's card, no extreme bias is expected on the main track, but horses with natural early foot that can take advantage of inside posts in the sprints deserve a slight edge.
On the turf course, post position becomes increasingly important at route distances. In the Pennine Ridge (Race 3) at 1 7/8 miles and the Belmont Gold Cup (Race 10) at 2 3/16 miles, inside posts can sometimes be a hindrance if a horse is trapped along the rail with no run room in the stretch. Conversely, horses in the middle of the field in turf routes tend to get the best of both worlds — saved ground in the early going and room to maneuver late. In the Intercontinental sprint on turf (Race 8), the rail is historically coveted at Saratoga's 1 1/16-mile turf configuration, and horses from posts 1 through 5 have performed well in recent runnings.
For the 2 3/16-mile Belmont Gold Cup, the long run gives even wide-posted horses a chance to settle into position, and historically the race sets up for closers who can patiently work their way into contention through the first mile and a quarter before making a sweeping run in the final turn.
RACE 1 — Post (12:35)/11:35/10:35/9:35 — 1210f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | AOF | Purse $115,000
This is a six-furlong maiden special weight for older fillies and mares on the main track, one of the more competitive non-black-type events you will find at Saratoga in early June. The $115,000 purse signals the quality of entrants expected, and with nine horses in the field, it is a manageable wagering race.
Race 2
Pace Analysis
The early pace picture is somewhat murky with a field full of maidens, but MARGIE'S GIRL (6) from the McPeek barn figures to press forward, and PERPETUAL (1) from the Pletcher stable has shown willingness to be forwardly placed. LUMINOUS BEAUTY (3) with Flavien Prat has the pedigree and connections to rate just off the pace. If multiple horses test the pace from the outset, the race could set up for a closer, though six furlongs on a fast track at Saratoga can favor horses with tactical speed that rate close to the lead rather than outright front-runners.
Key Contenders
MARGIE'S GIRL (6) is the morning line favorite at 3-1 from the Kenneth McPeek barn with Jose Ortiz up, and that combination demands respect. McPeek operates a sharp outfit that targets maiden races carefully, and Jose Ortiz is one of the very best in the business when it comes to placing inexperienced horses. MARGIE'S GIRL (6) exits what should be quality preparation and figures to be on or near the pace throughout.
PERPETUAL (1) is a Pletcher-trained runner that gets John Velazquez, a pairing that has produced winners at Saratoga on countless occasions. Pletcher's maiden fillies at Saratoga are a reliable angle when the stable is represented by a top jockey, and drawing post 1 at six furlongs here is workable with tactical speed.
LUMINOUS BEAUTY (3) draws significant attention with Flavien Prat in the irons, coming from the Jena Antonucci barn. Antonucci is a respected trainer who does her best work with lightly raced fillies at this distance and surface, and Prat's presence suggests confidence. The 4-1 morning line likely undersells her actual chance at the windows.
Secondary Choices
DINNER PARTY (4) is Pletcher's second entry, guided by Irad Ortiz Jr., and dual Pletcher coverage gives bettors a challenge sorting the stable's preference. Irad Ortiz Jr. is the leading rider at Saratoga by virtually any measure, and when he opts for a horse in a field where his main stable partner has two runners, it often signals the sharper of the two. At 6-1 on the morning line, DINNER PARTY (4) represents interesting value if Irad Jr. is the “live” Pletcher horse.
MINDEE'S WORLD (5) from the Englehart barn with Carmouche gets respect. Jeremiah Englehart has been a consistent winner with maiden fillies at Saratoga and the 5-1 morning line is reasonable. Carmouche has become one of the top riders at the Spa in recent years.
Longshots
MEL WENT HOME (2) at 15-1 from the Robert Medina barn with Gaffalione aboard is an intriguing curiosity — Gaffalione rarely rides longshots unless there's reason to believe. However, in a maiden field with limited form, this is likely more of a jockey booking fill-in situation. BIBLICAL JUSTICE (7) at 6-1 from the Chad Summers barn with Dylan Davis has some appeal in this spot, and Davis has been improving his Saratoga numbers. SO ANGELINA (8) at 30-1 from the Arriaga barn and SAYSOMETHINGNICE (9) at 15-1 from the Giddings operation are both lightly regarded and likely need significant improvement to factor. They can be safely eliminated in most wagers.
Betting Strategy
The top trio of MARGIE'S GIRL (6), PERPETUAL (1), and LUMINOUS BEAUTY (3) figure to dominate the trifecta. Use DINNER PARTY (4) underneath as a live deep price if Irad Jr.'s booking signals stable intent. In win wagering, LUMINOUS BEAUTY (3) at 4-1 with Prat offers the best overlay potential if the morning line holds. Structuring an exacta box using MARGIE'S GIRL (6) / LUMINOUS BEAUTY (3) / DINNER PARTY (4) gives reasonable coverage.
Selections
Win: MARGIE'S GIRL (6) Place: LUMINOUS BEAUTY (3) Show: DINNER PARTY (4)
RACE 2 — Post (1:07)/12:07/11:07/10:07 — 1320f | D | N | JersyGirlB175k | BOF | Purse $175,000
The Jersey Girl Stakes is a one and three-sixteenth mile route for fillies and mares on the main track, a black-type event worth $175,000. This is a six-horse field that projects as a genuine two-horse race based on the morning line, though the exacta and trifecta pools should offer some value given the layers beneath the top pair.
Race 3
Pace Analysis
CARMEL COAST (1) from D. Whitworth Beckman with Gaffalione figures to be on the front end at this distance and is likely to clear from the inside post without much serious pressure. If CARMEL COAST (1) is allowed to dictate on her own terms at a pace she finds comfortable over a mile and three-sixteenth route, she becomes very dangerous. The 2-1 favorite needs to have her early fractions questioned — if she can control the tempo, she will be difficult to catch. MYTHICAL (6) from the Delgado barn at 1-1 should be stalking, with natural ability to close into a moderate or honest pace.
Key Contenders
MYTHICAL (6) is the morning line co-favorite at 1-1 with Edgard Zayas aboard from the Jorge Delgado barn. At even money in a stakes race, MYTHICAL (6) carries expectations of dominant form, and Delgado has been placing this filly confidently in stakes company. Zayas has ridden this horse before and understands her running style. She should rate in behind the pace and launch her bid from the top of the lane.
CARMEL COAST (1) from D. Whitworth Beckman at 2-1 with Tyler Gaffalione is the main speed. Gaffalione is masterful with front-running mares and will get CARMEL COAST (1) into position immediately from the rail. If the pace is soft, she will be very difficult to run down at this distance.
Secondary Choices
GOODALL (3) from Steve Asmussen with Flavien Prat at 4-1 is the most interesting price in this race. Asmussen is one of the top trainers in North America and does not enter stakes races casually. Prat's riding has been exceptional in recent weeks, and GOODALL (3) gets every benefit of the doubt as an Asmussen-Prat combination worth backing. This is a horse that could easily turn the tables on the top pair if they burn each other up.
PAIGE TURNER (4) from Cherie DeVaux with Jose Ortiz at 4-1 has significant connections attached — DeVaux trains GOLDEN TEMPO (9), one of the top Belmont Stakes contenders on Saturday's card, so the barn is in sharp form. Jose Ortiz is riding with tremendous confidence this week. PAIGE TURNER (4) must be respected in the exacta and trifecta.
Longshots
IRISH JIG (5) at 12-1 from the Kelly Lynn Deiter barn with Carol Cedeno is a significant underdog and likely a pace factor at best. Cedeno has had limited impact in stakes company at Saratoga. OSCAR BOUND (2) at 30-1 from the Melanie Giddings barn is a throwout in this field.
Betting Strategy
The race revolves around whether MYTHICAL (6) at near-even money is worth taking on. GOODALL (3) at 4-1 with Prat is the strongest overlay on the board. Use GOODALL (3) on top in exactas with MYTHICAL (6) and CARMEL COAST (1) underneath. A win bet on GOODALL (3) is the play of the race here for value seekers. The trifecta of GOODALL (3) / CARMEL COAST (1) / MYTHICAL (6) or MYTHICAL (6) / CARMEL COAST (1) / GOODALL (3) covers the most likely outcomes.
Selections
Win: GOODALL (3) Place: MYTHICAL (6) Show: CARMEL COAST (1)
RACE 3 — Post (1:40)/12:40/11:40/10:40 — 1870f | T | G3 | PnninRdg-G3 | BON | Purse $300,000
The Grade 3 Pennine Ridge at one and seven-eighths miles on the Saratoga turf is a genuine test of stamina, class, and pacing judgment. This is the first graded stakes of the afternoon and one of the most analytically demanding races on the card. The field of 10 includes some legitimate long-distance turf performers, along with a pair of 50-1 longshots from the Arriaga barn that are unlikely to threaten. TALK TO ME JIMMY (10) is listed with a rider TBA, which is a notable flag that bears watching for a possible late scratch or jockey change.
Race 4
Pace Analysis
WEST END KID (9) from Bill Walden with Gaffalione is the morning line favorite at 2-1 and projects as a pace-controlling type at this distance. TALK TO ME JIMMY (10) at 1-1 could also be involved early depending on jockey instructions. The long distance of the Pennine Ridge typically produces an honest if not strong early pace, and horses that have demonstrated the ability to relax in the early stages while maintaining position for the long run home are at a premium. BOTTAS (1) from the Clement barn with Manny Franco draws the rail and should be able to save ground throughout.
Key Contenders
WEST END KID (9) at 2-1 from Bill Walden's barn with Tyler Gaffalione is the clear betting favorite and earns that distinction based on recent long-distance turf form. Walden is a capable conditioner in the staying turf division, and Gaffalione's ability to judge pace in long-distance turf routes is among his defining strengths. WEST END KID (9) figures to be forwardly placed without being on a suicidal front.
TALK TO ME JIMMY (10) at 1-1 is the co-morning line favorite with a TBA rider — this is a significant concern and bettors should monitor for a potential scratch or a late jockey assignment. From Rudy Rodriguez's barn, this horse has enough talent to compete at this level, but the rider situation creates genuine uncertainty. If a top jockey is assigned, the price could drop sharply.
BOTTAS (1) from the Miguel Clement barn with Manuel Franco at 4-1 is perhaps the most professional play in this race. Clement is among the best turf trainers in New York and excels at preparing horses for demanding route conditions. The rail draw at 1 7/8 miles is workable as long as Franco can rate the horse comfortably through the early fractions. The 4-1 morning line makes BOTTAS (1) an attractive overlay if either of the top two falters.
Secondary Choices
GLAVINE (8) from Thomas Morley with John Velazquez at 4-1 is a horse that deserves serious attention. Velazquez rarely takes Grade 3 mounts at this distance unless the horse has legitimate credentials, and Morley has been steadily placing this runner into positions where he can perform. GLAVINE (8) is a graded stakes price with a Hall of Famer in the saddle — a combination that should not be dismissed.
NOBLE DYNASTY (4) from Bill Mott with Junior Alvarado at 6-1 is a Mott-trained long-distance turf horse, which is essentially as reliable a combination as exists in American racing for this type of event. Mott's horses are always well-prepared for their distance, and Alvarado has been superb in stakes company this spring.
BLINGING IT BACK (6) from Mark Casse at 6-1 with Jose Ortiz is the second Casse entry and the one with the sharper jockey booking. When Casse doubles up in a stakes race, it is worth noting which horse gets the better rider. BLACKMAIL (5) from Casse with JJ Castellano at 8-1 is also in the field — Castellano is not a downgrade and brings exceptional pace-reading ability to a long-distance turf route.
Longshots
CHIPS AND FISH (2) at 50-1 from the Arriaga barn with Christopher Elliott, ASKED AND ANSWERED (7) at 50-1 also from Arriaga with Ruben Silvera, and TIME FOR AMERICA (3) at 15-1 from Michelle Nihei with Carmouche are best used only in deep exotic structures if at all. Nihei's TIME FOR AMERICA (3) at 15-1 could attract some attention as a price play given the distance, but this is speculative at best.
Betting Strategy
The TBA rider situation on TALK TO ME JIMMY (10) is the most critical piece of news to monitor before this race goes off. If TALK TO ME JIMMY (10) draws a top rider and remains at 1-1, the race becomes difficult to beat. If there is a scratch or if the rider assignment is a minor name, pivot entirely to BOTTAS (1) and WEST END KID (9) as the top exacta pair. A tri box of BOTTAS (1) / WEST END KID (9) / GLAVINE (8) or NOBLE DYNASTY (4) is the structural play. The best single bet is BOTTAS (1) at 4-1 if TALK TO ME JIMMY (10) has any negative developments.
Selections
Win: BOTTAS (1) Place: WEST END KID (9) Show: NOBLE DYNASTY (4)
RACE 4 — Post (2:13)/1:13/12:13/11:13 — 1980f | D | AO | OClm 55000n1x | BUM | Purse $120,000
This is a one and a quarter mile open claiming event for older horses at the $55,000 level, restricted to non-winners of one race other than maiden or claiming. The Chad Brown-trained DIRECTIVE (6) enters as a heavy morning line favorite at 1-1, and the race's wagering interest largely centers on whether the price will rise enough to create any value, or whether taking on the favorite is a viable strategy.
Race 5
Pace Analysis
At one and a quarter miles on the dirt, early fractions will be reasonable from this group. DIRECTIVE (6) from Brown with Prat is likely to be covered up early and make a move on the far turn. PURE JOY (2) from Asmussen with Gaffalione could be forwardly placed, and METFARDEH (7) from Pletcher with Velazquez is another horse with tactical speed. The pace should be honest enough to allow the closers to have a chance.
Key Contenders
DIRECTIVE (6) from Chad Brown with Flavien Prat at 1-1 is the clear top choice, and Brown's dominance in New York claiming and allowance routes is well-documented. Prat is in tremendous form heading into Belmont week. Brown horses in this spot — first-level allowance/claiming routes at a mile and a quarter — win at an exceptionally high rate, and DIRECTIVE (6) should be a best-bet candidate if the price is acceptable.
METFARDEH (7) from Pletcher with Velazquez at 6-1 is a capable second option. Pletcher and Velazquez regularly find winning routes in this condition, and at 6-1 against the Brown favorite, this horse represents the best overlay on the board.
Secondary Choices
REALITY STAR (8) from Claude McGaughey with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 8-1 draws attention purely because of the jockey. Irad Jr. does not take throwout mounts in claiming races at Saratoga, and when he accepts a ride in this condition at 8-1, it merits a serious look. McGaughey's barn has been sending horses out with decent form, and REALITY STAR (8) could easily outrun the morning line odds.
PURE JOY (2) from Asmussen with Gaffalione at 5-1 gets the benefit of a top barn and a top rider, and Asmussen has been winning at a brisk clip in this type of spot. This is the third-best ticket in the race.
Longshots
U LITE UP MY LIFE (3) from Saffie Joseph Jr. with Dylan Davis at 10-1, MEASURE (5) from Casse with Jose Ortiz at 10-1, CHIT CHAT (4) from Mott with Alvarado at 20-1, and BERNIEANDTHEROSE (1) from Schettino with Katie Davis at 12-1 are largely secondary considerations. MEASURE (5) with Jose Ortiz from the Casse barn is the most live of the longshots given the connections, but 10-1 is thin value for a horse in this condition off this training pattern.
Betting Strategy
DIRECTIVE (6) is a legitimate short-priced best bet. The question is whether 1-1 is playable. For those who focus on exactas, the single most valuable play is DIRECTIVE (6) over METFARDEH (7) and REALITY STAR (8). A $1 exacta wheel of DIRECTIVE (6) on top over METFARDEH (7) / REALITY STAR (8) / PURE JOY (2) gives smart coverage.
Selections
Win: DIRECTIVE (6) Place: METFARDEH (7) Show: REALITY STAR (8)
RACE 5 — Post (2:46)/1:46/12:46/11:46 — 1210f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | BUM | Purse $115,000
This is a six-furlong maiden special weight on the turf for older males, a full field of 12 horses that creates significant exotic wagering opportunity. With FLORIDA PATRIOT (11) at 2-1 as the morning line choice and NAKOMA (12) at 3-1 right behind, the field sets up as a two-horse morning line race with legitimate prices lurking underneath.
Race 6
Pace Analysis
The turf sprint at six furlongs on the Saratoga turf course will produce a quick early pace with this size field. FLORIDA PATRIOT (11) and NAKOMA (12), both toward the outside of the field, will need to use some early energy to establish position. Horses drawn inside on a firm turf course at six furlongs at Saratoga have historically enjoyed a significant advantage. MY DIVINE SPIRIT (1) draws post 1 with Jose Ortiz, which is an interesting angle worth exploring at 5-1.
Key Contenders
FLORIDA PATRIOT (11) from Thomas Morley with Ricardo Santana Jr. at 2-1 is the morning line choice and Morley's form with turf sprinters has been consistently reliable. Santana Jr. is one of the most underrated riders in New York and rides turf with exceptional patience. FLORIDA PATRIOT (11) needs to overcome a wide post but has the natural speed to fire on first asking on turf.
NAKOMA (12) from Jena Antonucci with Jose Morelos at 3-1 comes out of the same barn responsible for LUMINOUS BEAUTY (3) in Race 1. Antonucci entries from the outside in turf sprints at Saratoga are a well-established betting angle, and NAKOMA (12) at 3-1 carries legitimate chance despite the wide draw. Morelos is a capable rider who has been placed confidently in these spots.
Secondary Choices
MY DIVINE SPIRIT (1) at 5-1 from Jorge Abreu with Jose Ortiz is perhaps the most intriguing play on the entire card. Post 1 in a six-furlong turf sprint at Saratoga is an enormous advantage on a firm course, and Jose Ortiz is one of the best in the world. Abreu's barn has been firing at a sharp clip this spring, and MY DIVINE SPIRIT (1) at 5-1 with the inside post and a top-five jockey is the best overlay of the afternoon.
I'M VERY SWEET (7) from Chad Brown with Flavien Prat at 6-1 carries the Brown-Prat combination that wins at an elite percentage on the turf. Brown is historically one of the most successful trainers of first-time turf runners, and PRAT'S ability to get a horse relaxed early in a turf sprint from post 7 is a genuine asset. This is a must-use horse in all exotic wagers.
BOURBON MILK PUNCH (4) from Horacio De Paz with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 4-1 gets a capable rider and a mid-post draw. De Paz has shown the ability to spot horses in spots where they can win on turf, and Irad Jr. is always dangerous.
Longshots
DANCE CLASS (2) from Mott with Alvarado at 10-1, IMMORTAL POET (3) from Falcone with Dylan Davis at 12-1, CHART THE COURSE (5) from Casse with Castellano at 8-1, RED BEACH (6) from Sacco with Elliott at 30-1, MEDICI ROAD (8) from Clement with Franco at 8-1, MIEL ET CITRON (9) at 50-1, and CLEARLY SOPHIA (10) at 20-1 complete the field. CHART THE COURSE (5) from Casse with JJ Castellano at 8-1 is worth a sprinkle in the trifecta, as Casse regularly produces first-time turf runners that outrun their odds with Castellano's guidance on pace. MEDICI ROAD (8) from Clement at 8-1 with Franco is another Clement turf entry deserving of minor respect.
Betting Strategy
MY DIVINE SPIRIT (1) is the single strongest overlay play on the card for Thursday. Post 1 on a firm Saratoga turf course at six furlongs with Jose Ortiz at 5-1 is the type of situation sharp bettors circle on their cards. Structure a trifecta key using MY DIVINE SPIRIT (1) on top over I'M VERY SWEET (7), FLORIDA PATRIOT (11), NAKOMA (12), and BOURBON MILK PUNCH (4). The $0.50 trifecta key will cover all combinations at a manageable investment.
Selections
Win: MY DIVINE SPIRIT (1) Place: I'M VERY SWEET (7) Show: FLORIDA PATRIOT (11)
RACE 6 — Post (3:19)/2:19/1:19/12:19 — 1540f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | BUM | Purse $100,000
A maiden special weight at one and five-sixteenth miles on dirt for older horses, this 13-horse field is one of the most challenging races to handicap on the card given the maiden status of the competitors and the sprawling field. CARELESS WHISPER (3) from George Weaver and LIBERTY'S ADVANCE (8) from Bill Mott share 4-1 co-favoritism, with TUTHILLTOWN (12) from Rodolphe Brisset and Prat also at 4-1.
Race 7
Pace Analysis
With 13 maidens going more than a mile on dirt, the pace will likely be modest early as inexperienced horses find their way in the race. GOTTA GUN RUNNER (11) from Jorge Abreu with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 8-1 has the name and breeding to be a pace factor. LAKE ARIEL (1) from David Donk with Velazquez could press forward. The long stretch at Saratoga will be unforgiving for horses that go too fast early in a maiden route with this many runners.
Key Contenders
CARELESS WHISPER (3) from George Weaver with Manuel Franco at 4-1 is well-connected and Weaver routinely produces fit maiden runners at Saratoga. Franco is riding with confidence and the combination in a maiden route at this price is worth a serious win bet.
LIBERTY'S ADVANCE (8) from Bill Mott with Junior Alvarado at 4-1 carries the Mott stamp of approval that always warrants respect. Mott's maiden dirt routers are patient, well-prepared horses, and Alvarado's ability to position a horse from post 8 in a 13-horse maiden route is a genuine asset.
TUTHILLTOWN (12) from Rodolphe Brisset with Flavien Prat at 4-1 is the third co-favorite and perhaps the most intriguing given Prat's presence. Brisset is a sharp conditioner who places horses precisely, and his decision to enter TUTHILLTOWN (12) at this level suggests confidence in the horse's readiness.
Secondary Choices
GOTTA GUN RUNNER (11) from Jorge Abreu with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 8-1 commands respect based solely on the jockey. Irad Jr. accepts Saratoga mounts selectively, and an 8-1 morning line runner with Irad Jr. in maiden company is worth including in all exotics. RIZZ (4) from Adam Rice with Gaffalione at 8-1 is a horse that Gaffalione presumably likes, and the 8-1 price makes it a worthwhile exacta inclusion.
BEAU'S BELLA (10) from Englehart with Carmouche at 10-1 gets a knowledgeable trainer and a capable jockey in a spot where Englehart's maiden horses have shown up with competitive efforts.
Longshots
SUITED CONNECTORS (2) from Clement with Santana at 12-1, ENTERPRISINGLY (5) from Duggan with Jose Ortiz at 15-1, READY ROSIE JANE (6) at 50-1 from Zito, AXIS POINT (7) at 20-1 from Bartkowski, CHAUMET (9) at 20-1 from Terranova, LAKE ARIEL (1) at 10-1 from Donk, and INTO THE UNKNOWN (13) at 20-1 from Sells are all longer priced and lacking the connections to project as strong contenders in this field. LAKE ARIEL (1) with Velazquez at 10-1 deserves mention as a live price — Velazquez does not take maiden mounts as fill-ins, and his presence on a 10-1 shot from the Donk barn is worth noting in the exotic pools.
Betting Strategy
This is a difficult race to isolate a single win choice, making it better suited to exacta wheels and trifecta boxing among the top trio. Box the three 4-1 co-favorites — CARELESS WHISPER (3), LIBERTY'S ADVANCE (8), and TUTHILLTOWN (12) — in trifectas, and add GOTTA GUN RUNNER (11) as a fourth wheel. In win wagering, LIBERTY'S ADVANCE (8) from Mott is the top selection based on trainer reliability in maiden routes.
Selections
Win: LIBERTY'S ADVANCE (8) Place: CARELESS WHISPER (3) Show: TUTHILLTOWN (12)
RACE 7 — Post (3:53)/2:53/1:53/12:53 — 2420f | t | AO | OClm 55000n1x | BUN | Purse $120,000
A one and a half mile turf route open claiming event at $55,000, restricted to non-winners of one race other than maiden or claiming. This 13-horse turf route will test endurance and will likely produce a closer-dominated pace scenario. The field is loaded with accomplished connections, making this one of the most competitive claiming turf routes you will find anywhere in the country on a given Thursday.
Race 8
Pace Analysis
At a mile and a half on turf, the opening fractions will be measured and the real race will begin from the half-mile pole. Horses that can rate comfortably and make one sustained run in the final quarter-mile are at a premium. LIKENESS (1) from McGaughey with Prat in post 1 will benefit from the inside but must avoid getting trapped early in a large field. OPERATION OVERLORD (8) from Pletcher with Irad Ortiz Jr. has the ability to come from off the pace at this distance.
Key Contenders
LIKENESS (1) from Claude McGaughey with Flavien Prat at 4-1 is a legitimately dangerous horse in this spot. McGaughey's long-distance turf horses are among the best-prepared in New York, and post 1 in a turf route at this distance with Prat could be a significant advantage. The rail in a 13-horse turf route is a dual-edged sword, but with Prat's experience, the inside rail here is more asset than liability.
OPERATION OVERLORD (8) from Todd Pletcher with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 4-1 is another elite combination. Pletcher has had tremendous success with mid-level turf routes in Saratoga conditions, and Irad Ortiz Jr. at a mile and a half on turf is lethal when the pace is honest.
RIGHT TO VOTE (7) from Chad Brown with Manuel Franco at 4-1 represents the Brown barn's entry, and at 4-1 in a turf route, Brown's horses must be respected. Franco has been riding at a high level all week, and RIGHT TO VOTE (7) appears primed for a big effort.
Secondary Choices
I AM I SAID (9) from Miguel Clement with Gaffalione at 5-1 is perhaps the best value in this race. Clement with Gaffalione in a long-distance turf route at 5-1 is a winning combination historically, and I AM I SAID (9) appears to have the pace profile to sit in a good trip and unleash late.
EMERGENCE (4) from Brad Cox with Jose Ortiz at 6-1 gets the Cox-Ortiz combination that has been particularly effective in turf routes this season. Cox is one of the most accomplished trainers in North America and rarely misses in spots like this.
AMBITION (13) at 6-1 from Ilkay Kantarmaci with Silvestre Gonzalez carries the widest post in the field but has enough early pace to clear and find a position. Gonzalez is an underrated jockey on the Saratoga circuit.
Longshots
HEATHGUARD (2) from Lerman at 12-1, EDGERTON (3) from Stidham at 12-1 with Velazquez, GREYSTONE (5) from Maker at 12-1, POWER SEEKER (6) at 20-1 from Rodriguez, MONTEREY BAY (10) at 10-1 from Wesley Ward, OFFLEE NAUGHTY (11) from Sharp at 8-1 with Jose Ortiz, and WAR OFFICER (12) from Saffie Joseph Jr. at 12-1 round out the field. EDGERTON (3) with Velazquez from Stidham at 12-1 is the most interesting of the secondary tier — Stidham regularly produces fit turf routers and Velazquez in a long-distance turf event is never to be dismissed. MONTEREY BAY (10) from Wesley Ward at 10-1 is worth a sprinkle given Ward's exceptional turf record.
Betting Strategy
Three 4-1 shots and a 5-1 in one race create excellent trifecta value. The key is identifying the correct order among LIKENESS (1), OPERATION OVERLORD (8), RIGHT TO VOTE (7), and I AM I SAID (9). Structure a trifecta using these four horses in all combinations — the $0.50 four-horse box runs only $12 and covers all 24 combinations. Add EMERGENCE (4) as a fifth horse for deeper coverage.

The Grade 2 Intercontinental at one and one-sixteenth miles on turf for older fillies and mares is one of the showcase events of the afternoon. With BAM'S BLISS KISS (11) entering as the 2-1 morning line favorite from the Abreu barn with a TBA rider — another notable flag — this race has a similar dynamic to Race 3's TALK TO ME JIMMY situation. The jockey assignment for BAM'S BLISS KISS (11) must be monitored before post.
Race 9
Pace Analysis
At 1 1/16 miles on the Saratoga turf course, the pace will be honest in a Grade 2 field of this quality. SHOOT IT TRUE (9) from Wesley Ward with Juan Hernandez is likely a forwardly placed type, and TWIRLING QUEEN (1) from D'Angelo with Santana could also be involved in the early fractions. IN OUR TIME (3) from Saffie Joseph Jr. with Prat at 3-1 will need to find a comfortable spot off the pace and launch from the top of the lane. A genuine pace will set up for closers, which is historically the case in the Intercontinental.
Key Contenders
IN OUR TIME (3) from Saffie Joseph Jr. with Flavien Prat at 3-1 is the most compelling wager in this race. Prat in a Grade 2 turf event is always dangerous, and Saffie Joseph Jr. has elevated his game in graded stakes competition in recent seasons. Post 3 is a favorable draw in the Intercontinental configuration, and IN OUR TIME (3) should find a comfortable tracking position before Prat asks for her best in the stretch. At 3-1 in a $250,000 Grade 2, IN OUR TIME (3) is the best bet of the afternoon.
GRATEFULLY (7) from Robert Falcone Jr. with John Velazquez at 4-1 is a significant contender in this spot. Velazquez in a Grade 2 turf sprint is a powerful combination, and Falcone has been quietly producing above-the-line results this spring. GRATEFULLY (7) at 4-1 represents strong value if IN OUR TIME (3) is the horse to beat.
SHOOT IT TRUE (9) from Wesley Ward with Juan Hernandez at 4-1 gets a trainer who is among the absolute best in the world at turf sprints of this distance and configuration. Ward's fillies and mares in graded turf sprints have an extraordinary win percentage, and SHOOT IT TRUE (9) will be forwardly positioned from the start, which could be crucial if the pace collapses.
Secondary Choices
BAM'S BLISS KISS (11) at 2-1 with a TBA rider creates enormous uncertainty. If a top jockey is assigned, this horse becomes the favorite and likely the race's most dangerous runner. If the rider assignment is a secondary name, then IN OUR TIME (3) and GRATEFULLY (7) become the clear top options.
CREED'S GOLD (2) from Mark Casse with JJ Castellano at 8-1 is a horse that deserves exacta inclusion. Castellano is a Grade 1 winner in turf sprints and Casse's graded stakes fillies are always respected. TIME TO DAZZLE (6), also from Casse with Jose Ortiz at 8-1, is the second Casse entry — Jose Ortiz's booking over TIME TO DAZZLE (6) is worth noting.
Longshots
TWIRLING QUEEN (1) at 15-1, READY TO JAM (4) from Cox at 10-1 with Alvarado, LOVE CERVERE (5) from Clement at 10-1 with Franco, ITALIAN SOIREE (8) at 15-1 from H. Graham Motion, and ROJA (10) from Motion at 10-1 with Irad Ortiz Jr. complete the field. ROJA (10) from Motion with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 10-1 is worth attention — Motion is an elite turf trainer and Irad Jr. on a 10-1 shot in a Grade 2 is a genuine overlay angle. READY TO JAM (4) from Cox with Alvarado at 10-1 cannot be ignored given Cox's stable form.
Betting Strategy
IN OUR TIME (3) is the top selection. Use IN OUR TIME (3) on top of exactas with GRATEFULLY (7), SHOOT IT TRUE (9), and BAM'S BLISS KISS (11) in the slots. Monitor the BAM'S BLISS KISS (11) rider situation carefully — if a top jockey is assigned, the morning line will likely shift and you may want to include this horse on top as well. A $1 exacta of IN OUR TIME (3) / GRATEFULLY (7) and IN OUR TIME (3) / SHOOT IT TRUE (9) are the primary plays.

RACE 9 — Post (5:01)/4:01/3:01/2:01 — 1760f | D | R | Alw 55000s | BUN | Purse $78,000
A one and one-sixteenth mile allowance on dirt for older horses. GEORGIA MAGIC (8) from the Schauer barn with Irad Ortiz Jr. is the 3-1 morning line choice, while MAGNANIMOUS MAX (2) from Linda Rice with Manuel Franco at 4-1 is the second choice.
Race 10
Pace Analysis
At a mile and one-sixteenth on the main track, the pace will likely be set by MIAMI FRANK (1) from Saffie Joseph Jr. with Gaffalione at 6-1, who is drawn inside and has tactical speed. GEORGIA MAGIC (8) and MAGNANIMOUS MAX (2) should track the pace and make their bids turning for home. An honest early pace here sets up perfectly for closers with strong late kicks.
Key Contenders
GEORGIA MAGIC (8) from Steven Schauer with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 3-1 is the top selection. Schauer handles a pair of horses in this race — both GEORGIA MAGIC (8) and COCKTAILSNKRINGLE (7) — and the preference for Irad Ortiz Jr. on GEORGIA MAGIC (8) at 3-1 is the critical angle. Irad Jr. knows exactly which horse he wants to ride, and his selection of GEORGIA MAGIC (8) signals the barn's confidence.
MAGNANIMOUS MAX (2) from Linda Rice with Manuel Franco at 4-1 is the second most logical top choice. Rice is a skilled conditioner in the New York allowance ranks and Franco has been riding superbly. MAGNANIMOUS MAX (2) at 4-1 is a reasonable overlay against the favorite.
Secondary Choices
MIAMI FRANK (1) from Saffie Joseph Jr. with Gaffalione at 6-1 is the tactical speed in the race. If MIAMI FRANK (1) can control the tempo without being pushed hard in the early stages, he could easily wire the field. Gaffalione's ability to rate a horse on the lead is exemplary.
COCKTAILSNKRINGLE (7) from Schauer at 6-1 with Ricardo Santana Jr. is the stable companion to GEORGIA MAGIC (8) and will serve as a pace weapon or at minimum pressure the early leaders.
NORWICH (10) from Michael Maker with Prat at 8-1 draws attention with Prat in the irons. Maker is a graded stakes trainer who rarely misses spots in allowance company, and Prat's acceptance of this mount is meaningful at 8-1.
Longshots
SEQUENTIAL (4) from Noda at 8-1, XCEL (5) from Pletcher with Carmouche at 12-1, APALTA (6) from Kantarmaci at 12-1, TURN AND COUNT (9) from Morley at 6-1, and FIRST BLESSING (3) at 20-1 from Jimenez round out the field. TURN AND COUNT (9) from Thomas Morley with Jamie Rodriguez at 6-1 is a viable price play — Morley has been quietly effective this spring. XCEL (5) from Pletcher with Carmouche at 12-1 has the barn, and Carmouche's acceptance of a Pletcher runner is worth minor consideration in exotics. REGISTER (11) at 20-1 is a throwout.
Betting Strategy
GEORGIA MAGIC (8) is the strong top choice, and the exacta with MAGNANIMOUS MAX (2) and MIAMI FRANK (1) in the second spot covers the most likely outcomes. An exacta box of GEORGIA MAGIC (8) / MAGNANIMOUS MAX (2) is the primary play. Win bet on GEORGIA MAGIC (8) at 3-1.
Selections
Win: GEORGIA MAGIC (8) Place: MAGNANIMOUS MAX (2) Show: MIAMI FRANK (1)

The Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup at 2 3/16 miles on turf is one of the premier staying turf events in North America. This nine-horse field features two co-morning line favorites sharing 1-1 odds — CORRUPTION (7) from Mark Casse with John Velazquez and PARCHMENT PARTY (9) from Bill Mott, also with Velazquez listed — though given the same jockey cannot ride two horses, a jockey change or scratch is anticipated. This is a critical race-day development that must be monitored closely.
Race 11
Pace Analysis
At 2 3/16 miles on turf, the Belmont Gold Cup demands that horses conserve energy through the first mile and a half before making their decisive moves. NAVY SEAL (2) from Wesley Ward with Jose Ortiz at 4-1 could be a front-runner or pace factor — Ward's horses in long-distance turf routes are often more versatile than expected. TAWNY PORT (3) from Clement with Prat at 3-1 should rate just off the early pace in a comfortable position. The long run at Saratoga means that horses who get caught wide early or who overextend in the first six furlongs are likely to suffer in the final stages.
Key Contenders
CORRUPTION (7) from Mark Casse with John Velazquez at 1-1 is a significant staying turf horse that enters this race on strong form. Casse has been particularly effective with long-distance turf performers this season, and if Velazquez stays on board, CORRUPTION (7) is essentially a one-horse race at the morning line. The 1-1 price makes it difficult to structure profitable exotic wagers, but the win bet is defensible.
PARCHMENT PARTY (9) from Bill Mott at 1-1 is listed with Velazquez as well, but since one horse will need a different rider assigned, the situation bears monitoring. Mott's staying turf horses are legendary in the sport, and PARCHMENT PARTY (9) at any price deserves the utmost respect. If Velazquez moves to PARCHMENT PARTY (9), a major shift in the odds is likely.
TAWNY PORT (3) from Miguel Clement with Flavien Prat at 3-1 is perhaps the strongest value in this race. Clement is one of the best trainers at Saratoga, and TAWNY PORT (3) at 3-1 with Prat in a Grade 2 staying turf race is a genuine play. If either of the 1-1 favorites has any issues at the windows, TAWNY PORT (3) is likely to take the money.
Secondary Choices
NAVY SEAL (2) from Wesley Ward with Jose Ortiz at 4-1 is a horse that Ward has targeted carefully, and Jose Ortiz is an excellent choice for a horse that may need to run prominently. Ward's horses in Grade 2 turf routes have a remarkable record, and NAVY SEAL (2) at 4-1 is worth exacta inclusion against both favorites.
CONCORD GREEN (6) from McGaughey with Manuel Franco at 8-1 is a longer price that deserves respect. McGaughey trains staying turf horses as well as any trainer alive, and CONCORD GREEN (6) from the Shug McGaughey barn at 8-1 in a Grade 2 staying route is a genuine overlay.
FLASHIEST (1) from Powell with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 5-1 benefits from the rail post in a long-distance turf route with a jockey of Irad Jr.'s caliber. Powell has been steadily improving his record with turf routers, and the combination of an inside post and Irad Jr. makes FLASHIEST (1) a legitimate contender at 5-1.
Longshots
MIZTERTONIC (4) at 20-1, WORTHINGTON (5) at 30-1 both from the Brion barn with Castellano and Elliott, and FLEETFOOT (8) at 12-1 from Barry Foley with Carmouche round out the field. FLEETFOOT (8) from Foley with Carmouche at 12-1 is the most live of the longshots in this staying turf event — Foley has quietly produced results with distance turf horses at this level. Carmouche at 12-1 in a Grade 2 is worth a small exotic inclusion.
Betting Strategy
The dual Velazquez booking is the most critical handicapping issue on the Thursday card. Resolve this before wagering. If CORRUPTION (7) keeps Velazquez, the single strongest play is TAWNY PORT (3) at 3-1 underneath in exactas as Clement-Prat horses at 3-1 in Grade 2 turf routes simply must be used. If PARCHMENT PARTY (9) gets Velazquez, the Mott angle takes over. In either case, TAWNY PORT (3) with Prat and NAVY SEAL (2) with Jose Ortiz are both live exacta and trifecta horses regardless of the Velazquez resolution.
Selections
Win: TAWNY PORT (3) Place: CORRUPTION (7) Show: NAVY SEAL (2)
RACE 11 — Post (6:16)/5:16/4:16/3:16 — 1870f | T | CO | OClm 45000 | BUM | Purse $78,000
The closing race of the day is a one and three-sixteenth mile turf claiming event for older fillies and mares at the $45,000 level, with a staggering 16 horses in the field. DIVIDEND RECAP (6) from Miguel Clement and BIG AIR (14) from Linda Rice share 2-1 co-favoritism with ADRIAN (16), also from Linda Rice, at 2-1 — making this a three-way battle between two barns in the closing race.
Pace Analysis
Sixteen horses in a turf route at this distance creates a highly competitive pace scenario where getting a clean trip from a good post position is at least as important as outright ability. Horses drawn in the outside posts — and there are many here given the 16-horse field — will expend enormous energy to secure position in the early going. Inside posts are significantly advantageous in this spot, making DIVIDEND RECAP (6) in post 6 a natural beneficiary of ground-saving position.
Key Contenders
DIVIDEND RECAP (6) from Miguel Clement with Manuel Franco at 2-1 is the top choice in this race. Post 6 in a 16-horse turf field is an excellent draw, and Clement-Franco in a turf route is one of the most reliable combinations on the Saratoga circuit. At 2-1, the price is not attractive, but the horse is the most logical winner.
BIG AIR (14) from Linda Rice with Flavien Prat at 2-1 is Rice's stronger-jockeyed entry — Prat's presence on BIG AIR (14) over ADRIAN (16) with Manuel Franco is the key differentiator. However, post 14 in a 16-horse turf field is a severe disadvantage, and Prat will need to use significant early energy to find a workable position. This is a genuine concern that could undermine BIG AIR (14)'s chances.
ADRIAN (16) from Linda Rice with Franco at 2-1 draws the worst possible post in the field for a turf route. Post 16 in a 16-horse turf race is almost always a significant disadvantage unless the horse possesses elite early speed, and at 2-1, the morning line price does not account for this post position bias.
Secondary Choices
THAT'S FUNNY (15) from Kantarmaci with Gonzalez at 6-1 is a horse that has been placed carefully by a trainer who knows the claiming turf ranks well. At 6-1 from a wide post in a 16-horse field, the price is the draw, but the wide post is a concern.
PRETTY LAVISH (1) from Rob Atras with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 6-1 gets the best draw in the field combined with the best jockey. Post 1 with Irad Jr. in a 16-horse turf route is a powerful combination, and Atras regularly competes effectively at this claiming level. PRETTY LAVISH (1) at 6-1 with the rail post and Irad Jr. is the strongest overlay play in Race 11 and deserves a serious win bet and exacta use.
AUTONOME (12) from H. Graham Motion with Gavin Lerena at 8-1 is a Motion turf horse at 8-1 with a rider who specializes on turf — this combination is worth exacta and trifecta inclusion regardless of post position.
Longshots
RIVER TAY (2) from Bruce Brown with Katie Davis at 8-1, HEAVENLY LIGHT (3) at 12-1 from De Paz, MO COMPLEX (4) from Schultz at 10-1 with Gaffalione, HAUNTRESS (5) at 20-1, BOBBY JEAN (7) from Hennig at 10-1 with Carmouche, RACING COLORS (8) at 15-1, PRINCESS SUMMER (9) from Maker at 15-1 with Santana, LADY RIVER LILY (10) at 30-1, LOTUS PETAL (11) from Antonucci at 12-1, and PLANET CLARE (13) from Brion at 8-1 with Chuan all fill out this large field. MO COMPLEX (4) from Schultz with Gaffalione at 10-1 is a horse that Gaffalione clearly finds interesting — include in trifectas. PLANET CLARE (13) from Brion at 8-1 with Martin Chuan is worth a minor nod as a longshot. BOBBY JEAN (7) from Hennig with Carmouche at 10-1 gets a capable combination that could outrun the odds in a deep field.
Betting Strategy
The play in Race 11 is PRETTY LAVISH (1) to win at 6-1 and to use on top of exactas against DIVIDEND RECAP (6). The post-position advantage of posts 1 and 6 against fields drawing from 12-16 is enormous in a turf route. Trifecta: PRETTY LAVISH (1) and DIVIDEND RECAP (6) on top over AUTONOME (12), MO COMPLEX (4), and THAT'S FUNNY (15) gives broad coverage in a race where chaos is likely.
Selections
Win: PRETTY LAVISH (1) Place: DIVIDEND RECAP (6) Show: AUTONOME (12)
Jockey Notes and Insights
Flavien Prat is the dominant force in the jockey colony as Belmont Stakes week kicks off, and his workload on Thursday is among the heaviest on the card. He rides in Race 1 (LUMINOUS BEAUTY — Post 3), Race 2 (GOODALL — Post 3), Race 4 (DIRECTIVE — Post 6), Race 5 (I'M VERY SWEET — Post 7), Race 7 (LIKENESS — Post 1), Race 8 (IN OUR TIME — Post 3), Race 10 (TAWNY PORT — Post 3), and Race 11 via various connections. Prat's win percentage at Saratoga on turf routes exceeds 20% historically, and his presence in three graded stakes events on Thursday makes him the pivotal rider of the afternoon.
Irad Ortiz Jr. is the perennial leading rider at Saratoga and rides with a strategic selectivity that handicappers must respect. His key mounts include DINNER PARTY (4) in Race 1, BOURBON MILK PUNCH (4) in Race 5, GOTTA GUN RUNNER (11) in Race 6, OPERATION OVERLORD (8) in Race 7, ROJA (10) in Race 8, GEORGIA MAGIC (8) in Race 9, FLASHIEST (1) in Race 10, and PRETTY LAVISH (1) in Race 11. When Irad Jr. accepts rides on 8-1 and 10-1 shots in allowance and claiming races, it consistently signals live angles worth betting.
Jose Ortiz is in exceptional form heading into Belmont week and handles key mounts including MARGIE'S GIRL (6) in Race 1, PAIGE TURNER (4) in Race 2, MY DIVINE SPIRIT (1) in Race 5, BLINGING IT BACK (6) in Race 3, NAVY SEAL (2) in Race 10, and OFFLEE NAUGHTY (11) in Race 7. His presence on MY DIVINE SPIRIT (1) in Race 5 with post 1 advantage is the most significant value play of the day.
Tyler Gaffalione continues his ascent as one of the premier riders in New York and handles strong mounts including CARMEL COAST (1) in Race 2, WEST END KID (9) in Race 3, PURE JOY (2) in Race 4, MIAMI FRANK (1) in Race 9, and I AM I SAID (9) in Race 7. Gaffalione excels in pace-influenced races where reading the flow of traffic is critical, and his mounts in Races 7 and 9 are particularly well-placed.
John Velazquez's involvement in the dual-booking situation for Race 10 — listed on both CORRUPTION (7) and PARCHMENT PARTY (9) — is the critical jockey storyline of the card and must be resolved before wagering in the Belmont Gold Cup.
Junior Alvarado handles the key Mott mounts throughout the card and has been riding at an exceptional level in graded company.
Trainer Notes and Insights
Chad Brown is the most dominant trainer in New York turf racing and holds multiple entries on today's card. His horses DIRECTIVE (6) in Race 4, I'M VERY SWEET (7) in Race 5, RIGHT TO VOTE (7) in Race 7, and the Grade 2 runner IN OUR TIME (3) in Race 8 are all live contenders. Brown's first-time turf runners and his horses in conditions first allowance spots win at rates well above the industry average.
Todd Pletcher carries his standard Saratoga double-barrel strategy with multiple entries across the card. PERPETUAL (1) and DINNER PARTY (4) in Race 1, METFARDEH (7) in Race 4, XCEL (5) in Race 9, and OPERATION OVERLORD (8) in Race 7 are his key mounts. Pletcher's Saratoga statistics remain among the best in the history of the meet.
Bill Mott continues to be the gold standard for turf routing in North America. His entries NOBLE DYNASTY (4) in Race 3, LIBERTY'S ADVANCE (8) in Race 6, and the potential Grade 2 player PARCHMENT PARTY (9) in Race 10 all deserve maximum respect. Mott's patient approach to preparing horses for demanding distances is particularly relevant in Thursday's two long-distance turf stakes.
Miguel Clement is one of the more underappreciated trainers in New York and has a remarkable record at Saratoga with turf horses. BOTTAS (1) in Race 3, LOVE CERVERE (5) in Race 8, TAWNY PORT (3) in Race 10, and DIVIDEND RECAP (6) in Race 11 give Clement wide exposure on Thursday. His 4-1 shot in the Pennine Ridge and his 3-1 runner in the Belmont Gold Cup are the two highest-profile plays.
Mark Casse is running multiple horses across the card including BLACKMAIL (5) and BLINGING IT BACK (6) in Race 3, MEASURE (5) in Race 4, CHART THE COURSE (5) in Race 5, CORRUPTION (7) in Race 10, CREED'S GOLD (2), and TIME TO DAZZLE (6) in Race 8. Casse's starters in graded stakes events at this level of the meet must always be given serious consideration.
Saffie Joseph Jr. is operating with sharp form heading into Belmont week. His mounts include IN OUR TIME (3) in Race 8 and MIAMI FRANK (1) in Race 9. The connection to the DeVaux barn — which handles GOLDEN TEMPO (9) in Saturday's Belmont Stakes — suggests the entire mid-Atlantic operation is operating at peak form.
Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays
The most significant value plays on Thursday's card are concentrated in the turf sprints and graded stakes events, where inside post positions and elite trainer-jockey combinations create identifiable edges at advantageous prices.
The top single win bet of the entire card is MY DIVINE SPIRIT (1) in Race 5 at 5-1. Post 1 on a firm Saratoga turf course at six furlongs with Jose Ortiz is an exceptionally rare combination at this price, and the Jorge Abreu barn has been firing in top condition this spring. This is the bet to anchor your entire Thursday card.
The second-best win bet is PRETTY LAVISH (1) in Race 11 at 6-1. Post 1 with Irad Ortiz Jr. in a 16-horse turf claiming route is an enormous positional advantage, and Atras with Irad Jr. at 6-1 is a genuine overlay against the co-favorites drawn in posts 14 and 16.
IN OUR TIME (3) in Race 8 at 3-1 with Prat in the Grade 2 Intercontinental is the best bet in stakes company on the card and the Saffie Joseph Jr. angle heading into a major week is compelling.
BOTTAS (1) at 4-1 in the Grade 3 Pennine Ridge is the third graded stakes value play — Clement with Franco on the rail in a staying turf race is the type of angle that wins repeatedly at Saratoga.
