Tampa Bay Downs — Saturday, April 18, 2026 Race Day Overview

Tampa Bay Downs closes out another productive Saturday card with nine races spanning both the main track and turf course. The meeting is winding down toward its conclusion, and today's card reflects the typical late-season mix of claimers, maiden events, and allowance company that has characterized the Oldsmar oval's final weeks. The biggest news out of Tampa Bay Downs heading into this weekend is the track's strong contingent of three-year-olds who earned Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks qualifying points during the current meet, led by Tampa Bay Derby winner The Puma. That group has largely departed for Churchill Downs, leaving today's card to the claiming ranks, maiden hopefuls, and allowance horses who have been competitive throughout the meet.

On the national scene, Life of Joy is out of the Kentucky Oaks, and the Brad Cox barn has confirmed the filly's connections are reassessing her schedule. Arkansas Derby winner Renegade has moved to the top of the national Derby rankings ahead of Florida Derby winner Commandment, and Renegade's recent Palm Beach work drew positive reviews from observers. None of those developments directly impact today's Tampa card, but they reflect the Derby buildup energy that permeates the sport in mid-April.

Derek Ryan, who trained Lady Embrace for a Friday turf sprint, is represented today in Race 7 with Late Call (POST 1), continuing what has been a productive stretch run at the meet for his stable. Michael V. Simone, one of the meet's more active trainers, saddles horses in Races 2, 5, and 7, giving him strong representation across multiple race types today.

The nine-race card opens at 12:14 PM local time with a $10,000 claimer going 1-1/8 miles on the main track and closes with a $55,000 maiden special weight on the turf course at 4:19 PM. Three turf races are carded for today — Races 5, 7, and 9 — making the condition of the Tampa turf course particularly relevant for wagering decisions.

Weather and Track Conditions

Conditions at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday, April 18 are expected to be partly cloudy with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s throughout the afternoon. There is no significant precipitation in the forecast, which should allow both the main track and turf course to remain in good shape throughout the card. The main track is listed as fast, which is the standard condition for late-April racing at Oldsmar, as the Florida dry season has been well established and the track maintenance crew has kept the surface consistent.

The Tampa turf course is listed as firm, which is the ideal condition for the three turf races carded today. A firm turf at Tampa Bay Downs historically favors horses with tactical speed who can settle into good position early. Closers can get into the mix on the Tampa turf when the pace is honest, but front-runners and pace-pressers have a notable edge when the turf is playing firm, as the ground is harder and cleaner along the rail.

Winds out of the southwest at 10-12 mph are expected in the afternoon hours, which can create a slight headwind for horses going around the final turn and into the stretch on the Tampa main track oval. This is generally a minor factor but can occasionally influence pace development in longer dirt routes.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

The Tampa Bay Downs main track has been playing with a notable speed-favoring bias throughout the final weeks of the meet. Horses that establish position in the first three early are converting at a higher rate than closers, and the inside posts have shown a slight advantage in sprint distances. In the routes on dirt, the bias is somewhat less pronounced, as horses that sprint to the front from outside posts sometimes find themselves caught after the half-mile pole, but clean early position remains a significant asset.

In the 1-1/8 mile dirt races (Races 1 and 2 today), front-running and pressing types from inside or middle posts have the strongest record at this meet. The one-turn sprint at 7 furlongs (Race 6 at 1430f, or approximately 7 furlongs) similarly rewards speed, with inside and rail posts having a slight positional advantage through the opening turn.

On the turf course, the firm going has been favoring horses that can sit within two or three lengths of the pace and have enough kick to accelerate in the final furlong. The inside path on the Tampa turf is worth having when the course is firm, as there is little kickback and horses can save ground. Post position on the turf becomes slightly less critical in the longer routes (1-1/16 miles), but horses shipping from outside posts still need to be ridden actively early to avoid wide trips.

The 1540f main track maiden races (Race 4) run approximately 1-1/16 miles on dirt and, consistent with the overall bias, have seen front-running types performing well. The 1540f distance requires a more measured approach than an outright speed duel, but horses that can sit two or three wide and still maintain a stalking position tend to outperform deep closers in these conditions.

RACE 1 — Post (12:14)/11:14/10:14/9:14 — 1800f | D | C | Clm 10000 | CUM | Purse $26,500

Pace Analysis

This 1-1/8 mile claiming route at the $10,000 level is a typical late-meet Tampa claimer with a field of eight. The pace picture here is somewhat murky, with no obvious dominant speed horse leaping off the page. La Vecchia Signora (POST 3) and Olga (POST 7) both figure to be prominent early and the question is whether they press each other hard enough to set up the closer. Sweet Nola (POST 6) may also be used to establish position. The overall pace figure projection for this level suggests a moderate early pace, which generally favors horses with tactical speed rather than deep closers. If the early fractions are honest, Classic Ballad (POST 8) may have a chance to pick up late-tiring rivals, but a slow pace benefits the front-runners.

Key Contenders

La Vecchia Signora (POST 3) is the co-favorite at 2-1 under trainer Juan Carlos Avila and jockey Israel O. Rodriguez, one of the meet's most consistent riders. This filly or mare shows form that projects well to this distance and claiming level, and the inside post position from the 3-hole is workable in a route. Avila has been patient with this horse and the routing distance at 1-1/8 miles appears to be her preferred condition. At 2-1 she offers a fair price for what figures to be the most professionally placed horse in the field.

Olga (POST 7) is the other morning-line co-favorite at 2-1, trained by Keith W. Harris with Sonny Leon in the irons. Leon has been one of the most active riders at the meet and provides excellent big-field route experience. Harris is not the most prominent trainer on the Tampa grounds but places his horses deliberately. OLGA from the 7-post in a field of eight does face a slightly wider trip in a route, though Leon's experience mitigates that concern. The pace of the race will be critical for OLGA — if she can find a ground-saving trip through the first turn, she becomes dangerous.

Secondary Choices

Sweet Nola (POST 6), trained by Juan Arriagada and ridden by Hector Rafael Diaz Jr., is the 4-1 second choice on the morning line. Arriagada has been active and effective at the meet, and Sweet Nola (POST 6) figures to be positionally aggressive early. If she can secure a stalking position just behind any early speed without getting caught up in a contested pace duel, she has the class profile to be a factor in the stretch. At 4-1 she offers mild overlay potential if the pace develops as projected.

Classic Ballad (POST 8) at 5-1 from trainer Robert G. Smith and jockey Samuel Marin represents the closer's angle in this race. Marin has been riding with confidence at the meet. Classic Ballad (POST 8) would benefit from a fast early pace that softens the front-runners, and from the outside post she will need a ground-saving trip or a wide swinging move to get into contention. The 5-1 price is reasonable if you believe pace will be honest.

Longshots

Mia's Angel (POST 1), the 12-1 morning line shot from trainer David VanWinkle and jockey Alonso Quinonez, gets the rail post but has a long price for a reason at this level. Sing Scat (POST 2) at 30-1 is for horizontal exotic purposes only. Three Run Bolt (POST 4) at 12-1 under trainer Jose Antonio Vargas and jockey Gaddiel A. Martinez is a mild longshot with the right post but doesn't project as a winner here. Too Hot To Stop (POST 5) at 15-1 from trainer Lynn Rarick and jockey Wesley Ho is speculative at best.

Selections

Win: La Vecchia Signora (POST 3) Place: Olga (POST 7) Show: Sweet Nola (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: Straight win play on La Vecchia Signora (POST 3) at 2-1 is marginal value but acceptable given class and jockey. Exacta box La Vecchia Signora (POST 3) and Olga (POST 7) for even money, and add Sweet Nola (POST 6) as the third leg in the trifecta underneath.

RACE 2 — Post (12:44)/11:44/10:44/9:44 — 1800f | D | C | Clm 6250 | CUM | Purse $23,000

Pace Analysis

The $6,250 claiming route is the lowest rung on today's ladder and features a field of seven going 1-1/8 miles on dirt. Pemberley (POST 4) is the prohibitive morning-line favorite at even money, which is an unusual price for a horse at this claiming level and generally signals that the morning-line maker sees a significant class edge. The pace in a field where one horse is this dominant often develops slowly, as rivals defer to the favorite and wait to see if she tires. Allons (POST 5), stablemate to Magnolia Wind (POST 6) under trainer Michael V. Simone, adds a slight pace complexity with two horses from the same barn in the field.

Key Contenders

Pemberley (POST 4) at 1-1 under trainer Jose Francisco D'Angelo and jockey Cipriano Gil is the clear public choice and the form horse. A 1-1 morning line in a $6,250 claimer typically reflects a horse dropping into a very soft spot, and at this level that kind of price is not uncommon for a deserving favorite. D'Angelo places horses with precision at the Tampa meet, and GIL has been a reliable rider throughout the season. The 4-post is ideal for a route on dirt. While the price is short, the risk of getting beat is real in any claiming race, and betting odds of this magnitude require caution.

Allons (POST 5) at 2-1 is trained by Michael V. Simone, who also saddles Magnolia Wind (POST 6) in this race. The Simone barn's presence with two horses is a notable angle — trainers often enter two horses when they believe one of them can beat the field and use the other as a rabbit or backup. Allons (POST 5) is the shorter-priced of the two Simone entries and the more likely intended winner. Samuel Marin rides. The inside-outside dynamic between the two Simone horses could complicate pace development.

Secondary Choices

Magnolia Wind (POST 6) at 5-1, the second Simone entry, ridden by Israel O. Rodriguez, offers value if the connections have somehow landed this horse in a soft spot. Rodriguez is the meet's leading or near-leading rider and takes all mounts seriously. Magnolia Wind (POST 6) from the 6-post does face a slightly wider trip, but Rodriguez can find his way in a route.

Stormy Mitole (POST 7) at 8-1 from trainer Tim Padilla and jockey Wesley Ho is the best longshot play in this field. The name carries an honorable pedigree reference, and the outside post at this level in a routing race is manageable for a horse with tactical speed. Ho is a dependable rider at this meet.

Longshots

One Violent Affair (POST 1) at 12-1 under trainer Gonzalez Aldana and jockey S. Spieth is a long price that reflects modest recent form. Chacarera (POST 2) at 15-1 for trainer Pedro Posadas and jockey Gaddiel A. Martinez is a difficult fade at this level. Unicycle (POST 3) at 20-1 from trainer Mario Roberto Lopez and jockey Natalia Lynch is also a deep price with little to recommend at this level.

Selections

Win: Pemberley (POST 4) Place: Allons (POST 5) Show: Stormy Mitole (POST 7)

Betting Strategy: Pemberley (POST 4) at even money is nearly unplayable for win-only bettors. The better angle is to use Pemberley (POST 4) in exactas with Allons (POST 5) and Magnolia Wind (POST 6) to generate some return. The exacta with both Simone horses running for second and third is a reasonable sequence.

RACE 3 — Post (1:14)/12:14/11:14/10:14 — 1800f | D | M | Md 10000 | BUN | Purse $20,000

Pace Analysis

An eight-horse $10,000 maiden field going 1-1/8 miles on the main track. No Merlot (POST 4) is listed at 0-1 on the morning line, which is extraordinarily short — essentially unplayable for any profitable wagering, and it signals the horse is widely regarded as a mortal lock in this field. Maiden $10,000 contests at a route distance tend to feature plodding fractions and give front-runners a strong chance, though a horse as dominant as No Merlot (POST 4) can win from virtually any trip. The pace for the rest of the field will develop organically without much pressure on the heavy favorite.

Key Contenders

No Merlot (POST 4) at 0-1 under trainer Michelle Hemingway and jockey Sonny Leon is the story of this race. A morning-line price of 0-1 essentially means the morning-line maker is expressing that this horse is a near-certainty to win. At a $10,000 maiden claiming route, a price this extreme is rare and should be taken seriously. Leon is one of the best riders in the Tampa colony, and Hemingway clearly has confidence sending this horse out at this level. Wagering on No Merlot (POST 4) to win will produce almost no return; the value lies entirely in using this horse underneath in exotic wagers.

Amaury M. V. P. (POST 3) at 4-1 from trainer Hernan Parra and jockey Hector Rafael Diaz Jr. is the logical second choice and the horse most likely to inherit a position behind the favorite. At 4-1 with a clean inside post, there is value if Amaury M. V. P. (POST 3) can track the favorite and hold on for second.

Secondary Choices

Kadar Indy (POST 5) at 8-1 from trainer Robert Drake and jockey Marvin Fernandez is a value play for second and third money. Drake is a solid trainer at this level. Yadirayadirayadira (POST 1) at 10-1 from trainer Beverly Jeanette Curto and jockey Angel Serpa has the rail post and can get an uncontested trip if the pace sets up.

Longshots

El Rabano (POST 2) at 15-1 from trainer Mario Roberto Lopez and jockey Natalia Lynch is a deep price. Rapid Roy (POST 7) at 15-1 for trainer Martin Paramo and jockey Ubardo Casique will attract minimal support. Jeffersonian (POST 6) at 20-1 from trainer David VanWinkle and jockey Wesley Ho is a hard fade. Babyback (POST 8) at 30-1 for trainer Jackie Acksel and jockey Gaddiel A. Martinez is strictly for ticket variety in large exotics.

Selections

Win: No Merlot (POST 4) Place: Amaury M. V. P. (POST 3) Show: Kadar Indy (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: Pass the win bet on No Merlot (POST 4) entirely. Use No Merlot (POST 4) as the key leg in the exacta wheeling back to Amaury M. V. P. (POST 3), Kadar Indy (POST 5), and Yadirayadirayadira (POST 1). A small show bet on Amaury M. V. P. (POST 3) might return a reasonable price if the chalk wins easily and the race sets up cleanly for the second slot.

RACE 4 — Post (1:43)/12:43/11:43/10:43 — 1540f | D | M | Md 10000 | BUN | Purse $20,000

Pace Analysis

A ten-horse maiden $10,000 field going approximately 1-1/16 miles on dirt. Sarkis (POST 1) opens at 1-1 as another dominant morning-line favorite, this time from trainer Jose Francisco D'Angelo and jockey Samuel Marin. D'Angelo saddles another heavy choice after doing the same in Race 2 with Pemberley (POST 4). Ten-horse maiden fields at this distance create more pace complexity, and Goldinthesky (POST 3) and Sharp Wonder (POST 7) both figure to be prominent early. The rail post for Sarkis (POST 1) is an asset in a one-turn route, as the horse can angle in and save ground from the beginning.

Key Contenders

Sarkis (POST 1) at 1-1 from D'Angelo and Marin is the class of this field based on morning-line pricing. D'Angelo placing Sarkis (POST 1) at the 1-hole with Marin up is a professional setup, and the trainer's read of this claiming maiden level is clearly that Sarkis (POST 1) is several lengths better than anyone else entered. At 1-1, however, straight win wagering is again mostly for tickets in multi-race sequences.

Goldinthesky (POST 3) at 3-1 from trainer Pablo R. Torres and jockey Israel O. Rodriguez is the value proposition of this race. Torres saddles two horses in this field — Goldinthesky (POST 3) and Firstflashofmoon (POST 5) — but Goldinthesky (POST 3) is clearly the main entry with Rodriguez. The 3-post is excellent for a route on dirt, and if Goldinthesky (POST 3) can get a ground-saving trip while the favorite gets more pressure than expected, Rodriguez will pounce.

Secondary Choices

Sharp Wonder (POST 7) at 5-1 for trainer Jose A. Gallegos and jockey Wesley Ho is intriguing. Gallegos is a competent trainer who spots his horses carefully, and Ho has been one of the busier and more reliable riders at the Tampa meet. Sharp Wonder (POST 7) from the 7-post needs a clean trip but could be dangerous if the pace gets heated early.

Bernardo's Legacy (POST 6) at 6-1 from trainer Joseph F. Orseno and jockey Cesar Gonzalez is worth a look. Orseno is a well-regarded name in the game, and having his horse in a $10,000 maiden at Tampa at this price suggests some confidence. Bernardo's Legacy (POST 6) could easily outrun the 6-1 morning line.

Longshots

All The Luck (POST 4) at 8-1 from trainer Patrick B. McBurney and jockey Sonny Leon has Leon in the irons, which always provides a reason to look twice. Fire Baron (POST 9) at 12-1 from trainer Gary Ellebracht and jockey Alonso Quinonez is a deep price from the outside post. Firstflashofmoon (POST 5) at 20-1 is the second Torres entry and almost certainly a secondary option. Triple Stitched (POST 2) at 30-1 is trained and ridden by the Spanabel connections, which is a family operation that should be respected in terms of effort even if the price is long. Happy Moments (POST 8) at 30-1 from trainer Bertram C. Manchan and jockey Richard Mitchell is a very difficult price. Kenric (POST 10) at 30-1 from trainer Ricky N. Davis and jockey Marvin Fernandez is strictly for big exotic tickets.

Selections

Win: Sarkis (POST 1) Place: Goldinthesky (POST 3) Show: Sharp Wonder (POST 7)

Betting Strategy: Similar structure to Race 3. Use Sarkis (POST 1) on top in exactas, go back to Goldinthesky (POST 3) and Sharp Wonder (POST 7) for second. The trifecta with Sarkis (POST 1) on top, Goldinthesky (POST 3) and Sharp Wonder (POST 7) in second and third (both ways) is the recommended exotic.

RACE 5 — Post (2:16)/1:16/12:16/11:16 — 1870f | T | R | Alw 16000s | CUN | Purse $28,000

Pace Analysis

A nine-horse allowance field going 1-3/16 miles on the turf, restricted to horses that have not won a certain level of races. This is the first of three turf races today and a genuinely competitive field. The Best Distance (POST 4) and Eldest Son (POST 6) are co-second choices at 2-1, while Code Name (POST 3) opens at 3-1. The 1870f turf route favors horses with tactical speed on a firm course, and the two co-favorites from the middle posts project as pace-pressers or closers. Post Command (POST 8) at 4-1 and Into It (POST 5) at 5-1 add depth to the field. The pace should be honest in this allowance field, which sets up potential for closers from outside posts.

Key Contenders

The Best Distance (POST 4) at 2-1 from trainer Jose A. Gallegos and jockey Wesley Ho projects as the most likely winner based on class and connections. The horse's name is literally a confidence statement for today's 1-3/16 miles on turf, and Ho riding for Gallegos is a strong combination that has clicked repeatedly at this meet. The 4-post on the turf in a route is excellent real estate. If this horse runs to his name and his best form, he should be stalking the pace and accelerating in the final furlong.

Eldest Son (POST 6) at 2-1 for trainer Michael V. Simone and jockey Samuel Marin is the other co-favorite. Simone is having a productive final stretch of the meet and clearly rates this horse highly in this company. Eldest Son (POST 6) from the 6-post on turf will need to find a good trip around the final turn, but Marin is adept at navigating turf routes. The question is whether Eldest Son (POST 6) or The Best Distance (POST 4) has the better recent form — at equal morning-line prices, handicappers lean toward the more forwardly positioned horse.

Secondary Choices

Code Name (POST 3) at 3-1 from trainer Juan Arriagada and jockey Israel O. Rodriguez is a live contender. Arriagada is active throughout this card, and Rodriguez is a turf specialist at this level. Code Name (POST 3) from the 3-post is ideally positioned to secure early position on the rail or just off it, which is prime real estate on a firm Tampa turf course. At 3-1 this is the best price-to-probability proposition in the race.

Post Command (POST 8) at 4-1 from trainer Darien Rodriguez and jockey Sonny Leon is the closer's angle. Leon is comfortable sitting off the pace in routes, and Post Command (POST 8) from the outside post needs the pace to be legitimate. If The Best Distance (POST 4) and Eldest Son (POST 6) press each other, Post Command (POST 8) could be flying late.

Longshots

Into It (POST 5) at 5-1 from trainer Kelly J. Breen and jockey D.E. Centeno is a notable angle — Breen is a name trainer who occasionally ships a horse into Tampa, and Centeno is a capable rider. Into It (POST 5) should not be dismissed at this price. Journeyman (POST 9) at 5-1 from trainer Michael W. Wright and jockey J.C. Ferrer is also interesting; Wright and Ferrer have worked together effectively during this meet and from the outside post on turf, a late-closing horse can benefit from a wide trip if the pace is fast enough. Six Fortyfive (POST 1) at 12-1 from trainer Mike Dini and jockey Cipriano Gil has the rail post, which is an asset, but the price suggests modest expectations. Happyisashappydoes (POST 2) at 12-1 for trainer Francisco Alanis and jockey Martina Rojas is a speculative dart. Mackenzie's Novva (POST 7) at 20-1 from trainer Ralph N. Baez and jockey Gaddiel A. Martinez is a deep price for exotics only.

Selections

Win: The Best Distance (POST 4) Place: Code Name (POST 3) Show: Post Command (POST 8)

Betting Strategy: This is the most competitive race through the first half of the card. An exacta box involving The Best Distance (POST 4), Code Name (POST 3), and Eldest Son (POST 6) covers the most likely outcome. Add Post Command (POST 8) to the trifecta underneath. If Into It (POST 5) goes off at 6-1 or better at post time, it's worth a small single on top in a jackpot sequence.

RACE 6 — Post (2:49)/1:49/12:49/11:49 — 1430f | D | CO | OClm 25000 | BOF | Purse $36,500

Pace Analysis

A seven-furlong optional claiming race for fillies and mares going $25,000 optional with a field of eight. Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) is the morning-line favorite at 2-1, and this is a sprint distance where front-running ability and a clean break from the gate are critical on the Tampa main track. Authentic Wave (POST 1) from the rail at 3-1 is the logical speed horse who wants to lead from the jump. Lola's Romance (POST 3) and Elsie's Smile (POST 5) are both at 4-1 and figure to be involved in an early pace battle. If Authentic Wave (POST 1) and one or more of the 4-1 shots get involved in a speed duel, Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) and Prancin Inthe Dark (POST 8) could be closing.

Key Contenders

Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) at 2-1 from trainer Gerald S. Bennett and jockey D.E. Centeno is the morning-line choice in an optional claimer where the connections are protecting a horse they believe can compete without risking a claim. Bennett is a sharp conditioner at this level, and Centeno brings a strong work ethic to every mount. From the 7-post in a sprint, the horse will need to navigate the first turn efficiently, but Centeno is experienced enough to find a stalking spot. If the pace is honest, Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) projects to be finishing strongly.

Authentic Wave (POST 1) at 3-1 from trainer Steve Klesaris and jockey Samuel Marin has the ideal post position for a front-runner at seven furlongs on the Tampa main track. Klesaris is a Florida-based trainer with a strong record in sprint races, and the rail post allows Authentic Wave (POST 1) to clear immediately and set fractions. If allowed to go unchallenged, this horse could wire the field.

Secondary Choices

Lola's Romance (POST 3) at 4-1 from trainer Carlos Narvaez and jockey Sonny Leon is a pace-presser who will track early speed. Leon knows this horse from a regular working relationship with Narvaez, and Lola's Romance (POST 3) from the 3-post can sit just off the leader's hip. If Authentic Wave (POST 1) gets challenged hard early, Lola's Romance (POST 3) stands to benefit as the fresh horse tracking the pace.

Elsie's Smile (POST 5) at 4-1 from trainer Kathleen O'Connell and jockey P.L. Cotto Jr. is a comparable option to Lola's Romance (POST 3). O'Connell places her horses thoughtfully, and Elsie's Smile (POST 5) from the middle post can find a line along the inside on the turn. If the pace heats up as projected, Elsie's Smile (POST 5) has a chance to inherit position.

Longshots

Prancin Inthe Dark (POST 8) at 6-1 from trainer Anthony J. Granitz and jockey Cipriano Gil could be the closer if the pace melts down. At 6-1 she offers mild overlay value. Oh Sheila (POST 6) at 10-1 for trainer Kathy Guciardo and jockey Israel O. Rodriguez gets Rodriguez's attention — any time Rodriguez rides a horse at this level, it's worth a second look. Courageous Diane (POST 2) at 15-1 from trainer Jose Juan Vazquez and jockey Wesley Ho is a hard fade. Kiona (POST 4) at 30-1 from trainer Carlos Narvaez and jockey Marvin Fernandez is the second Narvaez entry and a throwout at this price — Narvaez clearly prefers Lola's Romance (POST 3).

Selections

Win: Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) Place: Authentic Wave (POST 1) Show: Lola's Romance (POST 3)

Betting Strategy: The best play here is an exacta pairing Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) on top of Authentic Wave (POST 1) and Lola's Romance (POST 3). Authentic Wave (POST 1) to win at 3-1 is a live play if you believe the rail speed will go unchallenged. Consider a trifecta with Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) and Authentic Wave (POST 1) in the top two slots over Lola's Romance (POST 3), Elsie's Smile (POST 5), and Prancin Inthe Dark (POST 8).

RACE 7 — Post (3:21)/2:21/1:21/12:21 — 1870f | T | A | Alw 55500n1x | BUN | Purse $55,500

Pace Analysis

The feature race of the card: a $55,500 allowance (non-winners of one, excluding maiden) for 3-year-olds and up going 1-3/16 miles on the turf. A ten-horse field with a wide-open pace picture. Mad Dog N Joe (POST 4) at 3-1 is the morning-line favorite, while Unique Power (POST 3), Resurgo (POST 5), Winnebago (POST 8), and Aegon Targaryen (POST 9) are all at 4-1. The sheer number of co-second choices signals a genuinely competitive race. Late Call (POST 1) from trainer Derek Ryan — fresh off Lady Embrace's productive Friday night — gets the rail post at 6-1 and should be respected. The pace in a competitive allowance turf route will be honest, setting up for closers or late-movers from outside posts.

Key Contenders

Mad Dog N Joe (POST 4) at 3-1 from trainer Michael W. Wright and jockey J.C. Ferrer is the public's choice and a logical one. Wright and Ferrer have been a productive pair at the meet, and the 4-post on the turf gives Mad Dog N Joe (POST 4) clean passage through the first turn. Ferrer is an experienced rider who manages turf routes with patience and knows when to move. If Mad Dog N Joe (POST 4) is sitting on a sharp form cycle, the 3-1 morning line looks fair.

Aegon Targaryen (POST 9) at 4-1 from trainer Gerald S. Bennett and jockey D.E. Centeno is a fascinating runner at this level. The name alone ensures attention, and Bennett has already demonstrated today that he can place a horse competitively with Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) in Race 6. Centeno riding back for Bennett in the feature is a strong angles connection. From the 9-post, Aegon Targaryen (POST 9) needs a pace that falls apart in the final quarter to allow a wide sweeping move — Centeno is capable of executing that pattern.

Late Call (POST 1) at 6-1 from trainer Derek Ryan and jockey Sonny Leon gets the rail post and represents the best closing price on a live horse in this field. Ryan is in form heading into this weekend, and Leon's ability to rate a horse off the rail on turf is well-established. At 6-1 there is genuine overlay potential if Late Call (POST 1) has the tactical speed to sit close to the pace.

Secondary Choices

Unique Power (POST 3) at 4-1 from trainer Jose Antonio Vargas and jockey Samuel Marin is another mid-post contender with Marin, who has had a productive meet. Vargas places horses deliberately and Unique Power (POST 3) from the 3-hole has excellent positional options early. At 4-1 this is a fair price for the second Marin mount in this analysis.

Resurgo (POST 5) at 4-1 from trainer Abraham Gardea and jockey Cipriano Gil is a middle-of-the-pack price horse that could easily close to win or place. Gardea is a reliable trainer at this level. Winnebago (POST 8) at 4-1 from trainer Miguel Clement and jockey Samuel Marin — wait, note that Marin is listed on both Unique Power (POST 3) and Winnebago (POST 8) in Race 7, which would require a jockey change to be resolved at the track. This is worth confirming at the window before betting.

Longshots

Jack Kerouac (POST 2) at 8-1 from trainer Gustavo Amaya and jockey Israel O. Rodriguez is never to be dismissed when Rodriguez rides, even at 8-1. Double Neat (POST 6) at 15-1 from trainer Jose A. Gallegos and jockey Gaddiel A. Martinez is a secondary Gallegos entry who could outrun the price if the pace falls apart. And Thats My Story (POST 7) at 20-1 from trainer Michelle Castillo and jockey Wesley Ho is a deep price but Ho always rides to win. Kid Kaos (POST 10) at 30-1 from trainer Moises R. Yanez and jockey Cesar Gonzalez is a throwout at this price and from the outside post.

Selections

Win: Mad Dog N Joe (POST 4) Place: Late Call (POST 1) Show: Aegon Targaryen (POST 9)

Betting Strategy: The wide-open nature of this field makes single bets risky. An exacta box with Mad Dog N Joe (POST 4), Late Call (POST 1), and Aegon Targaryen (POST 9) is the recommended approach. Add Unique Power (POST 3) and Resurgo (POST 5) as trifecta underneath options. This is a race where a small trifecta box of the top five horses at varying prices could produce significant returns. Verify the Marin double-entry situation before finalizing tickets.

RACE 8 — Post (3:53)/2:53/1:53/12:53 — 1430f | D | M | Md 16000 | BON | Purse $23,000

Pace Analysis

The largest field of the day: thirteen horses going seven furlongs on the main track in a $16,000 maiden sprint. They Call Me Sue (POST 7) opens at 2-1 as the clear morning-line favorite, followed by Knotenloserin (POST 2) at 4-1 and Strategicoperation (POST 13) at 5-1. In a thirteen-horse maiden sprint, post position and early speed are paramount. The rail and inside posts have the best track-bias advantage in Tampa sprints, but with thirteen horses breaking simultaneously, traffic is a real concern. They Call Me Sue (POST 7) from the 7-post should be able to find a comfortable trip while outside horses get sorted.

Key Contenders

They Call Me Sue (POST 7) at 2-1 from trainer Tony Wilson and jockey Samuel Marin is the choice. Marin is aboard for the third time today and will be looking for a straightforward trip. In a thirteen-horse sprint, finding a clean path to the rail coming off the first turn is essential. They Call Me Sue (POST 7) from mid-field should be able to angle in and establish a stalking position. The 2-1 price in a thirteen-horse field is attractive by comparison to other short-priced favorites on today's card.

Strategicoperation (POST 13) at 5-1 from trainer Juan Arriagada and jockey Hector Rafael Diaz Jr. deserves serious attention. The outside post in a sprint is a disadvantage, but Arriagada is having an excellent card today and Diaz Jr. is an aggressive rider who can push to the front from a wide post in a sprint. If Strategicoperation (POST 13) breaks alertly and angles in, the disruption of the outside post is minimized. At 5-1 from a sharp trainer, this is genuine value.

Secondary Choices

Knotenloserin (POST 2) at 4-1 from trainer Jose Francisco D'Angelo and jockey Sonny Leon has D'Angelo's third entry of the day — the trainer is clearly active with promising horses today. The 2-post in a sprint is nearly ideal, and Leon's ability to establish position early on a maiden is well-documented. Knotenloserin (POST 2) at 4-1 with Leon in a seven-furlong sprint on the main track is a live overlay.

Astridshadowmoon (POST 1) at 6-1 from trainer Robert Drake and jockey Gaddiel A. Martinez gets the rail in a thirteen-horse sprint, which is the most coveted post of all at Tampa in these conditions. Drake has been a dependable trainer throughout the meet and Martinez brings energy to every race. Astridshadowmoon (POST 1) from the rail with a clean break could establish a comfortable lead and wire the field at a price.

Longshots

Jimmy The Saint (POST 12) at 8-1 from trainer Chad J. Stewart and jockey Israel O. Rodriguez is worth including in large exotics — Rodriguez never wastes a trip and would not be riding this horse without cause. Fast Prince (POST 6) at 8-1 from trainer Anthony Rini and jockey Angel Serpa is another mid-price option. Desi's Trouble (POST 9) at 15-1 from trainer Mike Dini and jockey Martina Rojas is a speculative dart but Dini has shown form on the card in Race 5. Illustration (POST 10) at 15-1 from trainer Robert G. Smith and jockey Skyler Spanabel is a long price. Grandpa's Ace (POST 11) at 15-1 from trainer Tim Padilla and jockey Alonso Quinonez is a throwout from the outside cluster. Reagan's Renegade (POST 5) at 12-1 from trainer Rory C. Miller and jockey Cesar Gonzalez is a mid-field longshot. High Greatness (POST 3) at 20-1 from trainer Alexis Cordero-Lopez and jockey Cipriano Gil, Countingmyblessing (POST 4) at 20-1 from trainer Christopher T. Shaw and jockey Richard Mitchell, and Our Hope Rising (POST 8) at 20-1 from trainer Peter Wasiluk Jr. and jockey Jose A. Leon are all in the throwout category from a win perspective.

Selections

Win: They Call Me Sue (POST 7) Place: Knotenloserin (POST 2) Show: Strategicoperation (POST 13)

Betting Strategy: Use They Call Me Sue (POST 7) and Astridshadowmoon (POST 1) on top in the exacta. Go deep on the trifecta — They Call Me Sue (POST 7) and Knotenloserin (POST 2) in the top two, then spread to Strategicoperation (POST 13), Astridshadowmoon (POST 1), and Jimmy The Saint (POST 12) for third. The large field creates trifecta and superfecta value.

RACE 9 — Post (4:19)/3:19/2:19/1:19 — 1760f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | BON | Purse $55,000

Pace Analysis

The closing race of the day is the most prestigious on the card: a $55,000 maiden special weight on the turf at approximately 1-1/16 miles. Obra Prima (POST 2) opens as the 1-1 morning-line favorite under trainer Chad C. Brown, the most accomplished trainer on today's entire card. Brown's maiden runners at this price level carry enormous credibility because his stable's maiden special weights are almost always well-prepared debut or near-debut runners. Chester Boy (POST 9) at 2-1 is the second choice from trainer Miguel Clement, who also saddled Winnebago (POST 8) in Race 7. The pace in a Chad Brown-trained maiden race on turf often develops sedately early as the favorite is rated.

Key Contenders

Obra Prima (POST 2) at 1-1 from Chad C. Brown and jockey Samuel Marin is the most compelling individual horse on today's card from a trainer standpoint. Brown is consistently among the leading trainers in North America in terms of win percentage on maiden turf runners, and when he ships a horse to Tampa — a circuit well below his usual Belmont/Saratoga/Gulfstream stomping grounds — it is almost always because the connections believe they have a horse ready to break its maiden at a price below the major-market option. Obra Prima (POST 2) from the 2-post on turf is perfectly positioned. The 1-1 morning line price in a nine-horse field is not as extreme as the 0-1 seen in Race 3 and is generally the appropriate line for a Brown maiden runner in this context.

Chester Boy (POST 9) at 2-1 from trainer Miguel Clement and jockey Cipriano Gil is the competition. Clement is a competent turf trainer and the 2-1 price suggests respect from the morning-line maker. From the 9-post on a turf course, however, Chester Boy (POST 9) needs either an early show of tactical speed to secure position or a pace that falls apart. Gil is a capable turf jockey who has ridden well at this meet.

Secondary Choices

Neo Zapper (POST 7) at 8-1 from trainer Arnoud W. Dobber and jockey Richard Mitchell is a price horse worth noting. Dobber is not a household name at Tampa but has shown ability to develop turf horses, and Neo Zapper (POST 7) at this price could easily outrun expectations in a maiden field where a Brown horse creates soft betting into the chalk.

Six O Clock (POST 3) at 10-1 from trainer Arnaud Delacour and jockey Hector Rafael Diaz Jr. is a horse from a skilled French-influenced conditioner. Delacour is well-regarded for developing grass horses, and having two horses in this field — Six O Clock (POST 3) and Essential Charm (POST 8) — signals stable confidence. Essential Charm (POST 8) at 12-1 ridden by Wesley Ho is the second Delacour entry, and at 12-1 may be underestimated if the trainer is throwing a two-horse shot at the Chad Brown entry.

Mo Action (POST 6) at 10-1 from trainer Juan Carlos Avila and jockey Sonny Leon gives Leon another live afternoon mount to close the card. Gray Obsession (POST 5) at 15-1 from trainer Timothy Hamm and jockey Israel O. Rodriguez keeps Rodriguez busy throughout the afternoon.

Longshots

The Magic Speed (POST 1) at 20-1 from trainer Joseph W. Mazza and jockey Angel Serpa has the rail but a big price. Fifty Two Fifty (POST 4) at 30-1 from trainer S. Matthew Kintz and jockey S. Spieth is a throwout.

Selections

Win: Obra Prima (POST 2) Place: Chester Boy (POST 9) Show: Neo Zapper (POST 7)

Betting Strategy: Obra Prima (POST 2) at 1-1 is more playable than the Race 3 and Race 4 favorites because the Brown pedigree in maiden turf races is unimpeachable and the purse level is significantly higher, attracting better horses. Use Obra Prima (POST 2) on top in all exotics. Exactas keying Obra Prima (POST 2) over Chester Boy (POST 9), Neo Zapper (POST 7), and Six O Clock (POST 3) are the recommended plays. A win bet on Chester Boy (POST 9) at 2-1 is defensible as a saver if you believe Clement has closed the gap.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Israel O. Rodriguez is having one of the most productive final weeks of the Tampa meet, booked on eight horses today across nearly every race on the card. Rodriguez rides La Vecchia Signora (POST 3) in Race 1, Magnolia Wind (POST 6) in Race 2, Code Name (POST 3) in Race 5, Jack Kerouac (POST 2) in Race 7, Gray Obsession (POST 5) in Race 9, and several other mounts throughout the day. His workload today reflects his standing as the premier rider at the Oldsmar oval this season. Rodriguez excels on both the main track and turf course and has shown an ability to rate horses patiently in routes while still being aggressive in sprints. His mounts today are spread across multiple stables, indicating that multiple trainers view him as their first call.

Sonny Leon is the second-busiest rider on the card, aboard Olga (POST 7) in Race 1, No Merlot (POST 4) in Race 3, All The Luck (POST 4) in Race 4, Lola's Romance (POST 3) in Race 6, Late Call (POST 1) in Race 7, and Mo Action (POST 6) in Race 9. Leon's biggest mount of the day is arguably Late Call (POST 1) in the feature at 6-1 — a live longshot in a competitive allowance turf field. Leon's turf route experience is a genuine asset in Race 7.

Samuel Marin appears on Classic Ballad (POST 8) in Race 1, Allons (POST 5) in Race 2, Unique Power (POST 3) in Race 7 (with a potential conflict with WINNEBAGO in the same race to be resolved at the track), and They Call Me Sue (POST 7) in Race 8. The potential double-entry conflict for Marin in Race 7 is worth monitoring. Marin has been riding with consistent form and takes his mounts seriously regardless of morning-line price.

Wesley Ho is booked on multiple mounts including The Best Distance (POST 4) in Race 5, where he partners with trainer Jose A. Gallegos in what appears to be the strongest combination in the allowance turf field. Ho's ability to rate horses through a long turf route makes him an asset on a firm course. He also rides And Thats My Story (POST 7) in Race 7 and Essential Charm (POST 8) in Race 9 for the Delacour barn.

J.C. Ferrer, who rides Mad Dog N Joe (POST 4) in Race 7 and Journeyman (POST 9) in Race 5, is a veteran rider who consistently performs well in the allowance ranks. His experience in competitive turf fields makes him valuable in both afternoon assignments. D.E. Centeno rides Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) in Race 6 and Aegon Targaryen (POST 9) in Race 7, giving trainer Gerald S. Bennett two strong mounts with a trusted rider on back-to-back afternoon races.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Jose Francisco D'Angelo has three horses entered today — Pemberley (POST 4) in Race 2, Sarkis (POST 1) in Race 4, and Knotenloserin (POST 2) in Race 8. Two of those three are morning-line favorites, which is an extraordinary statement of confidence from a single trainer on a single card. D'Angelo's ability to produce ready-to-run horses at exactly the right claiming and maiden claiming level is the defining angle of today's card. He is arguably the most important trainer to follow today.

Michael V. Simone has three entries — Allons (POST 5) and Magnolia Wind (POST 6) in Race 2, and Eldest Son (POST 6) in Race 5. Running two horses in Race 2 is an interesting tactical decision that often signals confidence in one of them but uncertainty about which performs better. The presence of two strong riders (Marin and Rodriguez) on the respective entries gives both horses credibility. Eldest Son (POST 6) in Race 5 is Simone's showcase entry of the day, and the 2-1 morning line reflects genuine confidence.

Juan Arriagada has horses in Race 1 with Sweet Nola (POST 6), Race 5 with Code Name (POST 3), and Race 8 with Strategicoperation (POST 13). Arriagada is having a good final stretch of the meet, and his connections with strong riders throughout the day — Diaz Jr. and Rodriguez — indicate that his barn is in peak operating form.

Chad C. Brown shipping Obra Prima (POST 2) to Tampa for Race 9 is the news item of the day from a pure handicapping standpoint. Brown's maiden turf runners carry a presumption of readiness that no other trainer can match at this level, and the 1-1 morning line will likely firm up further at post time. When Brown ships to Tampa, it almost always means the horse is ready to run and ready to win.

Gerald S. Bennett has Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) in Race 6 and Aegon Targaryen (POST 9) in Race 7, both with Centeno up. A trainer running two horses back-to-back in the afternoon with the same jockey is a pattern that deserves attention — Bennett is clearly confident in the Centeno partnership and has his barn in good order for Saturday's card.

Derek Ryan's barn, which had Lady Embrace in action on Friday night, bounces back with Late Call (POST 1) in Race 7. The continuity of activity from Friday to Saturday for the Ryan barn suggests horses are training and racing at a productive clip heading toward the end of the meet.

Pablo R. Torres enters Goldinthesky (POST 3) and Firstflashofmoon (POST 5) in Race 4, with Rodriguez booked on the main entry at 3-1. Torres clearly targets Goldinthesky (POST 3) as the intended winner, and the split-entry strategy can occasionally produce a surprise from the second horse if the main entry tires.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The standout betting card at Tampa Bay Downs on April 18, 2026 revolves around three strategic themes: finding value when the public's money is forced into short-priced chalk, identifying overlay situations where strong trainer-jockey combinations are available at fair prices, and constructing multi-race exotic tickets that leverage the likely winners in the short-priced favorites while reaching for value in the races without a clear dominant horse.

The most extreme morning-line prices today are No Merlot (POST 4) at 0-1 in Race 3, Sarkis (POST 1) and Pemberley (POST 4) at 1-1 in Races 4 and 2 respectively, and Obra Prima (POST 2) at 1-1 in Race 9. None of these horses produce value on a straight win bet. The proper approach is to use them as bankers in exotic wagers — particularly in the Pick 3 and Pick 4 sequences — while investing more heavily in the races with wide-open competitive fields.

The Pick 3 spanning Races 5, 6, and 7 is the most appealing multi-race sequence of the day. Races 5 and 7 are both competitive allowance turf affairs, and Race 6 is an optional claimer with a 2-1 morning-line favorite in Questnbled'cisions (POST 7). Using The Best Distance (POST 4) and Code Name (POST 3) in Race 5, Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) singled in Race 6, and then spreading to Mad Dog N Joe (POST 4), Late Call (POST 1), Aegon Targaryen (POST 9), and Unique Power (POST 3) in Race 7 creates a ticket structure that can return substantial value if any of the 4-1 or 6-1 horses in Race 7 land on top.

The late Pick 4 covering Races 6 through 9 is another attractive structure. Singling Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) in Race 6, using two horses in Race 7, using They Call Me Sue (POST 7) in Race 8, and singling Obra Prima (POST 2) in Race 9 creates a tight, aggressive ticket. Alternatively, spreading Race 7 wide (four or five horses at equal prices creates pari-mutuel value) while singling the two 1-1 morning-line horses on either end of the sequence represents the value play if you believe both favorites will win.

The best individual value play of the card is Late Call (POST 1) at 6-1 in Race 7. Derek Ryan's barn is in form, Sonny Leon is riding well, the rail post is a genuine asset on the Tampa turf course at this distance, and the horse is available at a price that reflects its outside position in the morning-line pricing rather than any weakness in form. A single win bet on Late Call (POST 1) or a boxed exacta pairing Late Call (POST 1) with Mad Dog N Joe (POST 4) represents the best risk-adjusted value play available today.

The second-best value play is Code Name (POST 3) at 3-1 in Race 5. The combination of trainer Arriagada's form, Rodriguez's consistent riding, and the ideal 3-post on a firm turf course creates an overlay situation relative to the expected final odds. If Code Name (POST 3) opens at 3-1 and stays there, the price is generous for a horse with that combination of factors working in its favor.

For players focused on Race 8's large thirteen-horse maiden field, the trifecta and superfecta pools will be robust and the potential payoffs for unusual combinations will be strong. The recommended approach is a trifecta part-wheel using They Call Me Sue (POST 7) and Astridshadowmoon (POST 1) in the top two positions (both ways) over a spread of four to five horses for third, including Strategicoperation (POST 13), Knotenloserin (POST 2), and Jimmy The Saint (POST 12). The superfecta is worth a small investment in a race of this size, particularly given that deep-priced horses have a meaningful chance at filling out the bottom of the ticket.

Finally, players building a Pick 5 should consider the sequence starting in Race 5 and running through Race 9. Singling The Best Distance (POST 4) in Race 5, using two horses in Race 6 (Questnbled'cisions (POST 7) and Authentic Wave (POST 1)), spreading Race 7 with four horses, using They Call Me Sue (POST 7) in Race 8, and singling Obra Prima (POST 2) in Race 9 creates a manageable ticket cost with meaningful long-shot potential if the Race 7 spread catches a surprising winner. The carryover potential in any late Pick 5 pool at Tampa this time of year is another reason to invest in this sequence.
