Tampa Bay Downs — Race Day Overview: May 1, 2026

Tampa Bay Downs closes out its 2025-2026 meet with a nine-race Friday card that doubles as a satellite Derby Day celebration. While the headlines belong to Churchill Downs and the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby, serious bettors will find genuine value opportunities on this compact Tampa card. The meet has been winding down, so fields are leaning on horses that have been running regularly at this circuit, and the connections are familiar. The card is a mixed bag of surfaces — four dirt routes, three turf routes, one turf sprint, and a pair of turf routes rounding out the lower half — with claiming levels ranging from $6,250 at the bottom of the barrel up to an optional claimer at $75,000 that serves as the day's feature. Purses are modest by stakes standards but competitive for end-of-meet conditions at Tampa.

Silent Tactic scratched out of the Kentucky Derby field earlier this week with a foot bruise, and Great White drew in off the also-eligible list. The Derby buzz is background noise for Tampa bettors, but it does mean some casual money will flow through the windows today, which can create overlay opportunities in the middle and later races for sharp players willing to do their homework.

Weather and Track Conditions

Tampa Bay has been dealing with the classic late-April/early-May Florida transition weather. Afternoon temperatures are forecast in the mid-80s with partly cloudy skies and a moderate chance of afternoon showers, typical for the Gulf Coast in early May. The track superintendent has the main track listed as fast going into the card, though any afternoon rain could push the surface toward good or sloppy conditions by the middle races. Bettors should monitor the tote board and official track condition updates as post time approaches for Races 5 through 9.

The turf course has been rated good to firm through the week. Tampa's turf has held up reasonably well during the latter portion of the meet. If afternoon showers arrive, the turf could be taken off for turf races and those fields would be moved to the dirt. Races 2, 5, 7, and 9 are all scheduled on the turf, so weather will be a critical handicapping factor as the day progresses.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Tampa Bay Downs is a one-mile oval with a relatively short run from the gate to the first turn on routes. This configuration gives an inherent advantage to horses that can establish position early without burning too much energy. On the main track, inside posts in sprint races can be problematic when the track is fast and the rail has traffic concerns, but in routes the inside is generally neutral to slightly favorable. The dirt surface at Tampa historically plays to horses with early speed that can get to the rail and control the pace without pressure.

On the turf, the inside post positions at Tampa carry a slight disadvantage in longer turf routes because horses can get pinned behind traffic in the early going. Outside posts at roughly 4 through 7 tend to produce more winners in Tampa's turf routes. The turf sprint — Race 5 at five and a half furlongs on the turf — rewards horses that break cleanly and establish position quickly.

Late in the meet, the inside of the turf course can show wear. Horses willing to drift out slightly off the rail have been finishing well in the final stages. Jockeys who know to angle away from the rail in turf routes are at a decided advantage.

RACE 1 — Post (12:20) — 1430f | D | C | Clm 16000n2l | BUN | Purse $23,800

Six older males going a mile and 70 yards on the main track, restricted to non-winners of two lifetime. This is a manageable opener for players, as the field is small enough to dissect clearly. The distance slightly favors horses with tactical speed that can track the pace and pick up momentum around the far turn.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

My Satisfaction (6) figures to be the controlling speed in this spot. Trained by Guillermo Morales Jr. and ridden by Marcos Meneses, this horse carries the morning line favoritism at 2-1 and has shown the ability to set fractions on the front end in similar company. Fairfield Bay (1), trained by David Fisher and ridden by Samuel Marin, will likely press from the inside post and could make it a genuine pace battle if MY SATISFACTION opens up too aggressively. Danzing Miner (4) with Alonso Quinonez up figures to track the pace from a stalker position. Lucky Twist (5), handled by Sonny Leon for Mike Dini, has the tactical versatility to sit off the pace or press, which gives this horse an interesting role if the speed collapses.

Key Contenders

My Satisfaction (6) is the public's choice for good reason. Morales runs a respectable barn at Tampa and Meneses has been active on this circuit. At 2-1 on the morning line, this horse likely carries legitimate early speed that can be difficult to catch in a short field at this level. The key question is whether this horse can sustain those fractions over the added ground of a mile and 70 yards, a distance that can expose horses that are more naturally sprinters.

Lucky Twist (5) deserves serious attention. Trainer Mike Dini is a sharp conditioner who spots his horses well, and Sonny Leon is one of the most in-form riders at Tampa Bay. The 4-1 morning line on Lucky Twist (5) represents potential value if the pace plays into the hands of a closer or a presser who can time his run off the leaders.

Fairfield Bay (1) draws the rail, which at this distance on the Tampa oval is a neutral post. David Fisher is a journeyman Tampa trainer who keeps his horses fit, and Samuel Marin is consistently among the leading riders at the meet. The 3-1 price is fair.

Secondary Choices

Danzing Miner (4) at 4-1 for trainer Ty Garrett and jockey Alonso Quinonez is a horse that can sit comfortably off the early pace. Quinonez has been a dependable presence at this meet and can manufacture a strong finishing kick when the pace sets up correctly.

Who's Yer Man (3) at 5-1 for trainer John Vinson and jockey Cipriano Gil is a legitimate contender at a price. Gil has been riding aggressively at Tampa this meet, and Vinson knows the circuit.

Longshots

Night Of Magic (2) at 8-1 for trainer Abraham Gardea and jockey Wesley Ho is the deepest price in the field. Non-winners-of-two conditions can sometimes produce surprise winners from the bottom of the morning line when the pace collapses, so Night Of Magic (2) deserves a passing glance in exotics.

Selections

Win: Lucky Twist (5) Place: My Satisfaction (6) Show: Fairfield Bay (1)

Betting Strategy: Lucky Twist (5) is the play at 4-1 if the price holds, with Sonny Leon giving this horse a significant edge in rider quality. Box Lucky Twist (5), My Satisfaction (6), and Fairfield Bay (1) in the exacta. Include Who's Yer Man (3) as a saver in trifecta exotics.

RACE 2 — Post (12:50) — 1760f | T | C | Clm 20000 | BOF | Purse $32,500

Eight fillies and mares going a mile and a sixteenth on the turf, open claiming at $20,000. This is a field that deserves careful attention because the morning line shows three horses clustered at the top — Wickedthiswaycomes (6), Knowledge Is Good (7), and My Lil Flirt (8) — with the favorite at 1-1 and a pair of co-second choices at 2-1. This kind of bottom-heavy morning line suggests a race where the public is highly concentrated on a few horses, which can sometimes produce overlays in the middle of the field.

Weather note: If afternoon showers arrive, this race could be moved to the main track, which would scramble the entire form analysis. Monitor conditions carefully.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

More turf routes on the Tampa oval reward horses that can travel comfortably in mid-pack and produce a sustained run on the far turn. The pace in this field figures to be contested. Dixi So Fast (4) with Alonso Quinonez for trainer Tim Padilla figures to be involved early. More Vino Rosa (1) and Somerset Mia (2) could also press or set fractions depending on their running styles. My Lil Flirt (8), the morning line favorite at 1-1 for trainer Kathleen O'Connell with Sonny Leon aboard, figures to be rated off the pace, which is the typical Leon approach.

Key Contenders

My Lil Flirt (8) is a heavy short-price favorite that the public clearly believes in. At 1-1, this horse needs to be close to a certainty to justify the price. O'Connell is a competent Tampa trainer and Sonny Leon at his best is tough to beat. However, 1-1 on the morning line for an open claiming turf route for fillies and mares is a price that leaves almost no margin for error. Playing this horse to win requires accepting very little return.

Wickedthiswaycomes (6) at 2-1 for trainer Kevin Rice and jockey Israel Rodriguez is one of the most interesting horses in the field. Rice has been a productive trainer at this meet, and 2-1 on a horse with apparent talent represents slightly better value than the lukewarm favorite.

Knowledge Is Good (7) at 2-1 for trainer Michael Simone and jockey Samuel Marin is the other co-second choice. Simone runs an active and capable stable at Tampa, and Marin riding from the outside post 7 figures to get this horse into a comfortable position on the far turn.

Secondary Choices

Dixi So Fast (4) at 3-1 for Tim Padilla and Alonso Quinonez deserves consideration as a pace-pressing type that could steal this if the 1-1 shot gets caught in traffic.

Precious Sight (3) at 5-1 for trainer Chelsey Moysey and jockey Gaddiel Martinez is a mid-range price worth including in exotics.

Longshots

Somerset Mia (2) at 6-1 for trainer David Vanwinkle and jockey Hector Rafael Diaz Jr. is a horse that could outrun the odds in exotics if the pace collapses.

More Vino Rosa (1) at 4-1 for Kathleen O'Connell and Samuel Marin is interesting as a second O'Connell barn runner. Trainers sometimes run two horses in the same race and let the better-odds horse be the official “try” while the other is a true sleeper.

El Ma'any (5) at 12-1 for Mike Dini and Sonny Leon is well worth including deep in trifecta and superfecta tickets given the short price on the favorite. If My Lil Flirt (8) falters, the race opens wide.

Selections

Win: Wickedthiswaycomes (6) Place: My Lil Flirt (8) Show: Knowledge Is Good (7)

Betting Strategy: Use Wickedthiswaycomes (6) and Knowledge Is Good (7) as the primary horses in exacta boxes. The 1-1 morning line on My Lil Flirt (8) makes a straight win bet poor value. In trifectas, connect Wickedthiswaycomes (6) and Knowledge Is Good (7) on top with My Lil Flirt (8) and Dixi So Fast (4) in the middle. Sprinkle El Ma'any (5) in the third spot for trifecta depth.

RACE 3 — Post (1:25) — 1540f | D | M | Md 16000 | BOF | Purse $23,000

Seven fillies going a mile and 70 yards on the main track, maiden $16,000. The morning line is led by co-favorites Modern Miss (2) at 2-1 and Vali Vali Val (3) at 1-1. A clear standout exists at the top of the field in terms of market confidence, and the battle will be between these two in all likelihood.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Vali Vali Val (3) for trainer Tony Wilson and jockey Cesar Gonzalez is the morning line favorite and likely the controlling speed or a strong presser. At 1-1, Wilson and Gonzalez appear confident. Modern Miss (2) for Derek Ryan and Samuel Marin figures to track and challenge. Welcome Surprise (4) at 4-1 for trainer Jose Francisco D'Angelo and jockey Cipriano Gil could press or sit close. The distance of a mile and 70 yards on the dirt is a bit longer than ideal for maiden claimers at this level, and any early speed wars could set up a closer.

Key Contenders

Vali Vali Val (3) at 1-1 is the morning line choice. Wilson is a Tampa trainer with experience placing horses at the right level, and Gonzalez is a capable local rider. At 1-1, the risk-reward is similar to the Race 2 situation — you're playing for small returns on a race that could see upset results.

Modern Miss (2) at 2-1 for Derek Ryan and Samuel Marin represents better value from a pure odds standpoint. Ryan has been running well at Tampa this meet, and Marin with the 2-1 shot could be the one to beat if Vali Vali Val (3) is overbet by the public.

Secondary Choices

Welcome Surprise (4) at 4-1 for D'Angelo and Gil is worth including in exotics. D'Angelo has been active at Tampa and Gil knows the circuit.

Lioness Lillian (7) at 6-1 for trainer Max Ubide and jockey R. Torres is the final post in this field and worth a look as a stalker type.

Longshots

Ivey My Love (5) at 10-1 for trainer Steven Dye and jockey Manny Jimenez is a long shot that could outrun the odds with a clean trip.

Cloud Kisses (6) at 30-1 for trainer Steven Dye and jockey Gabriel Maldonado is a secondary Dye runner in the same race. Given the 30-1 morning line, this horse is considered a throw-out in straight wagers but could provide trifecta/superfecta value if the race scrambles.

Miss Sunrise (1) at 30-1 for trainer Brian Lusk and jockey Marvin Fernandez is the other longshot at 30-1. The rail post in a dirt route could help if there is a track bias toward the inside, but the morning line suggests this horse is among the least likely winners.

Selections

Win: Modern Miss (2) Place: Vali Vali Val (3) Show: Welcome Surprise (4)

Betting Strategy: Modern Miss (2) at 2-1 is the value play here over the 1-1 favorite. Marin's presence aboard is a quality signal. Box Modern Miss (2) and Vali Vali Val (3) in the exacta. In trifectas, put Modern Miss (2) and Vali Vali Val (3) on top with Welcome Surprise (4) and Lioness Lillian (7) in the third spot.

RACE 4 — Post (1:55) — 1320f | D | C | Clm 8000n2l | BUM | Purse $20,500

Seven males going seven furlongs on the main track, restricted to non-winners of two lifetime, claiming at $8,000. This is the lowest claiming level for males on the card and the sprint distance makes pace the dominant factor.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

Pat'schromecompass (1) at 2-1 for trainer Patrick McBurney and jockey Samuel Marin could press from the inside. Securitylightning (2) at 2-1 for trainer Kathleen O'Connell and jockey Israel Rodriguez is the co-favorite and likely has early speed to go with that price. Tinkatwo (7) at 3-1 for trainer Michael Yates and jockey S. Golibrzuch is the second favorite and figures to stalk the pace from outside. With two co-favorites and a 3-1 shot, the speed figures to be honest, and a pace collapse could benefit closers at longer prices.

Key Contenders

Pat'schromecompass (1) draws the rail, which in a seven-furlong sprint at Tampa is a useful post if the horse can establish position cleanly. McBurney has placed this horse in a winnable spot, and Marin's aggressive early riding style suits the sprint distance.

Securitylightning (2) for O'Connell and Rodriguez is the other 2-1 morning line choice. O'Connell's barn has multiple runners on today's card, which is a sign of an active, well-conditioned stable. Post 2 on the inside is workable for a sprint.

Tinkatwo (7) at 3-1 for Michael Yates and Golibrzuch draws the outside post in a seven-horse field. In a sprint, the outside post can be problematic if the horse needs to work hard to gain position, but at 3-1 there is value if this horse can stalk the co-favorites.

Secondary Choices

J J Monet (5) at 10-1 for trainer Earl Robinson and jockey Wesley Ho is a price worth noting if the pace collapses.

Ain't Noncents (6) at 12-1 for trainer Abraham Gardea and jockey Sara Hess is a live longshot in a small field where pace could set up favorably.

Longshots

Belly Dance (3) at 20-1 for trainer Gerard Ochoa and jockey Cipriano Gil is unlikely to factor based on morning line odds.

Little Carley (4) at 30-1 for trainer Steven Dye and jockey Jose A. Leon is another deep long shot in this field and is considered a throw-out in straight wagering.

Selections

Win: Securitylightning (2) Place: Pat'schromecompass (1) Show: Tinkatwo (7)

Betting Strategy: The two co-favorites warrant exacta play between Pat'schromecompass (1) and Securitylightning (2) in both orders. Tinkatwo (7) is the trifecta third. Include J J Monet (5) as a deep trifecta and superfecta option.

RACE 5 — Post (2:30) — 1760f | T | R | Alw 16000s | CUM | Purse $28,000

Seven fillies and mares going a mile and a sixteenth on the turf, allowance restricted condition. This is one of the most interesting races on the card because Dynamic Actress (3) is posted as the 1-1 morning line favorite in a seven-horse field. Trainer John Pimental and jockey Samuel Marin appear to have the public's full attention here, and at 1-1 this horse carries a significant burden of expectation.

Weather caution applies here as with all turf races today.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

Mrs. Katz (7) at 2-1 for trainer Derek Ryan and jockey Sonny Leon is the other major contender and figures as the primary challenger to Dynamic Actress (3). Leon at 2-1 with Ryan's record at Tampa makes this pairing dangerous. Gridlock (5) at 6-1 for trainer Michael Simone and jockey Cipriano Gil figures to stalk from mid-pack. Chilling Factor (4) at 8-1 for trainer Ben Ramos and jockey Wesley Ho is the pace presser to watch. Tinta Roja (1) and Lady Embrace (2) figure as early pace participants from the inside posts.

Key Contenders

Dynamic Actress (3) at 1-1 is the heavy choice. Pimental has placed this horse in a spot where the public clearly believes the horse belongs, and Marin is the right rider for a turf route. The issue, as with all 1-1 shots, is value. Players who use Dynamic Actress (3) in exotics would be wise to use it in the middle of tickets rather than as the top horse.

Mrs. Katz (7) at 2-1 for Ryan and Leon represents the best alternative. Ryan has been a strong trainer at this meet, and Leon's ability to rate a horse in a one-turn turf route is among his best skills. The outside post 7 in a turf route at Tampa is actually a workable position because it avoids the early traffic.

Secondary Choices

Gridlock (5) at 6-1 for Simone and Gil is a legitimate contender at a price. Simone is among the more active trainers at Tampa and has runners across today's card.

Lady Embrace (2) at 10-1 for Chelsey Moysey and Gaddiel Martinez is a price that could outrun her odds if the two morning line favorites engage each other too aggressively.

Longshots

Chilling Factor (4) at 8-1 for Ramos and Ho is the pace-setter to include in exotics.

Its Satisfactual (6) at 12-1 for trainer Kelly Spanabel and jockey Skyler Spanabel is a trainer-jockey combination from the same family, which is sometimes a sign of a horse that the connections believe is ready.

Tinta Roja (1) at 12-1 for Jose Antonio Vargas and Hector Rafael Diaz Jr. is the inside longshot. The rail in a turf route at Tampa carries risk in terms of early traffic, but at 12-1 the price is attractive enough for inclusion in trifecta/superfecta tickets.

Selections

Win: Mrs. Katz (7) Place: Dynamic Actress (3) Show: Gridlock (5)

Betting Strategy: Mrs. Katz (7) at 2-1 with Leon aboard is the value play over the 1-1 morning line favorite. Leon's record at Tampa in turf routes makes this horse the preferred win bet. Box Mrs. Katz (7) and Dynamic Actress (3) in exactas. In trifectas, connect the top two with Gridlock (5) and Lady Embrace (2) in the third position.

RACE 6 — Post (3:05) — 1540f | D | AO | OClm 75000n1x | BON | Purse $55,500

Six older males going a mile and 70 yards on the main track, optional claiming at $75,000 for non-winners of one allowance condition. This is the feature race of the card and the highest purse at $55,500. A small field of six with Wine Candy (2) as the 2-1 morning line choice.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

El Orejon (1), Ball Of Fire (3), and Permian Basin (6) figure as the pace-setters and pressers in this field. Wine Candy (2) at 2-1 for trainer Michael Yates and jockey Golibrzuch figures to be rated off the pace as a stalker. The mile and 70 yards distance on the dirt slightly favors tactical types that can find a rhythm behind honest early fractions without having to work hard early.

Key Contenders

Wine Candy (2) at 2-1 for Michael Yates and Golibrzuch is the morning line top choice. Yates has been active at Tampa and Golibrzuch has been riding with confidence on this circuit. A stalker style at this optional claiming level could prove optimal if Ball Of Fire (3) and El Orejon (1) establish honest fractions.

Ball Of Fire (3) at 3-1 for Michael Simone and Cipriano Gil is the most prominent secondary choice. Simone has multiple runners on this card across several races, a sign of a trainer who has his horses conditioned and ready. Gil is a capable Tampa jockey who knows how to ride the inside route. At 3-1, this is a legitimate alternative to the favorite.

El Orejon (1) at 4-1 for Steve Klesaris and Samuel Marin is worth respect. Klesaris is a seasoned trainer who does not enter horses carelessly at this level, and Marin from post 1 in a route has experience.

Secondary Choices

Permian Basin (6) at 4-1 for trainer Chad Stewart and jockey Sonny Leon is one of the most interesting horses on the ticket. Stewart is an accomplished trainer, and Leon at 4-1 in the feature is a significant value signal. Leon has been among the most effective riders at Tampa Bay this meet, and a fresh angle here at co-4-1 makes Permian Basin (6) a prime alternative.

Mr. Hooligan (5) at 4-1 for Kevin Rice and Gaddiel Martinez is the third horse at 4-1 in this race. Martinez has been increasingly active on the Tampa circuit and provides a useful alternative at a generous price.

Longshots

Mr In Personal (4) at 12-1 for Tim Padilla and Alonso Quinonez is the lone double-digit price in this field. At 12-1, this horse is a deep exotic inclusion rather than a serious win contender.

Selections

Win: Permian Basin (6) Place: Ball Of Fire (3) Show: Wine Candy (2)

Betting Strategy: Permian Basin (6) with Leon at 4-1 is the best value play in the feature. Leon's record in dirt routes at Tampa makes this horse a genuine win candidate at a price that will pay. Box Permian Basin (6), Ball Of Fire (3), and Wine Candy (2) in the exacta. Use those three on top with El Orejon (1) and Mr. Hooligan (5) underneath in trifectas. Mr In Personal (4) belongs in superfectas only.

RACE 7 — Post (3:40) — 1870f | T | M | Md 10000 | BUN | Purse $20,000

Ten males going a mile and 3/16ths on the turf, maiden $10,000 claiming. This is the largest field of the day — ten horses on the turf at this minimal claiming level — and it is the most chaotic race on the card. Maiden $10,000 claimers on the turf over a long distance at the end of the meet are routinely unpredictable. Efficacy (2) is the 2-1 morning line favorite for trainer Kathy Guciardo and jockey Samuel Marin.

Weather caution: This race is particularly vulnerable to a turf-to-dirt switch if showers arrive. A surface change would dramatically alter the complexion of the race.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

With ten horses at this level, pace is difficult to project. Goldinthesky (1), Silver Punch (3), and Great Hunt (8) figure as potential pace participants. The mile and 3/16ths on the turf will require horses to settle early and conserve energy. In a ten-horse field at this maiden claiming level, the pace is often modest early, which can produce a field-wide surge in the stretch that makes the result unpredictable.

Key Contenders

Efficacy (2) at 2-1 is the public choice for Guciardo and Marin. Marin is clearly in demand today — he picks up mounts across the card — and his presence on the 2-1 favorite here is a market signal worth respecting.

Great Hunt (8) at 5-1 for trainer Gerard Ochoa and jockey D.E. Centeno is among the more interesting horses in this field. Ochoa has runners on today's card, and the 5-1 morning line suggests this horse has legitimate form.

Goldinthesky (1) at 4-1 for trainer Pablo Torres and jockey Angel Serpa is a co-second choice that draws the rail. As noted in the track bias section, the inside post on the turf at Tampa is not ideal in longer routes, but at 4-1 the price compensates.

Silver Punch (3) at 4-1 for trainer Ben Ramos and jockey Cipriano Gil is the other 4-1 horse. Ramos has multiple runners on the card today.

Secondary Choices

Fifteen Hundred R (9) at 10-1 for trainer Pedro Garcia Jr. and jockey Sonny Leon is an interesting value play. Leon picking up this mount at 10-1 is a worth-noting angle, as Leon rarely takes mounts he doesn't believe have a chance.

Babyback (5) at 12-1 for trainer Jackie Acksel and jockey Gaddiel Martinez deserves exotic inclusion.

Longshots

Jeffersonian (6) at 15-1 for trainer David Vanwinkle and jockey Wesley Ho is a mid-range longshot that could outrun the odds with a clean trip.

Distinguished Gent (10) at 15-1 for trainer Eduardo Luces and jockey Jose A. Leon is another 15-1 shot in a field full of them.

Happy Moments (7) at 30-1 for trainer Bertram Manchan and jockey Carlos Martinez is a deep throw-out.

Asymbolus (4) at 30-1 for trainer Pablo Torres and jockey R. Torres is the other 30-1 shot. The trainer-jockey connection of Pablo Torres and R. Torres may indicate a family or professional partnership, but 30-1 odds are not encouraging for straight wagering.

Selections

Win: Efficacy (2) Place: Great Hunt (8) Show: Fifteen Hundred R (9)

Betting Strategy: In this chaotic ten-horse maiden turf field, the recommended approach is to use Efficacy (2) and Great Hunt (8) as the top two in exactas and connect them with Goldinthesky (1), Silver Punch (3), and Fifteen Hundred R (9) in trifecta third positions. Superfecta play should include all horses priced at 15-1 or shorter on top with the 30-1 shots as cheap fillers in the fourth position.

RACE 8 — Post (4:18) — 1800f | D | C | Clm 6250 | CUN | Purse $23,000

Nine males going a mile and an eighth on the main track, claiming $6,250. This is the lowest claiming level on the card and the longest dirt route. Nine horses at $6,250 claiming going nine furlongs is a recipe for a slow pace and a scrambling finish. The morning line is led by Style Me Royal (2) at 3-1 for trainer Steven Cahill and jockey Sara Hess.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

A nine-furlong race at $6,250 claiming rarely features honest early fractions. The pace will be slow, and horses with tactical speed that can move on the far turn are favored. Blue Slide Park (1) for Simone and Gil, Style Me Royal (2) for Cahill and Hess, and Quistmer (8) for trainer Juan Arriagada and jockey Israel Rodriguez figure as the most active pace participants. The slow early pace could set up a closer that gets a clean trip on the far turn.

Key Contenders

Style Me Royal (2) at 3-1 is the morning line favorite. Cahill is a competent trainer and Hess has been riding with energy on the Tampa circuit. A 3-1 price at $6,250 claiming suggests the public sees this horse as the class of a modest field.

Blue Slide Park (1) at 4-1 for Simone and Gil draws the rail in a nine-furlong route. Simone has multiple runners across today's card and is clearly running an active stable operation. At 4-1, this horse deserves attention, particularly given the trainer's presence throughout the card.

Quistmer (8) at 4-1 for Arriagada and Rodriguez is the other co-4-1 horse. Rodriguez has been a workhorse jockey on this circuit and Arriagada is a trainer who competes regularly at this level.

Surprise Package (5) at 5-1 for O'Connell and Hector Rafael Diaz Jr. is the third O'Connell runner on the day, extending a barn that is clearly ready to fire.

Secondary Choices

Fort Charles (3) at 6-1 for trainer Nik Goodwin and jockey Samuel Marin is worth inclusion. Marin picking up mounts across the card demonstrates confidence from multiple trainers.

Denying (9) at 8-1 for Simone and Sonny Leon is the second Simone runner in this race. With Gil on Blue Slide Park (1) and Leon on Denying (9), Simone is covering the race with two quality riders. This suggests the trainer may prefer Denying (9) as the one to beat, given that Leon has been the superior rider at this meet.

Longshots

Midnight Onyx (4) at 10-1 for trainer Anthony Granitz and jockey J.C. Ferrer is a mid-range longshot worth a trifecta look.

Holiday Fantasy (6) at 20-1 for Padilla and Carlos Martinez is a deep long shot.

Cox Canyon (7) at 20-1 for trainer Peter Wasiluk Jr. and jockey Cesar Gonzalez is the other 20-1 shot. Both are included only in superfecta positions.

Selections

Win: Denying (9) Place: Style Me Royal (2) Show: Quistmer (8)

Betting Strategy: Denying (9) with Sonny Leon at 8-1 is the value selection in this race. When Simone enters two horses and puts Leon — his best available rider for the day — on the 8-1 shot over the 4-1 shot, that is a meaningful signal. Box Denying (9), Style Me Royal (2), and Quistmer (8) in exactas. Use Denying (9) as the primary horse on top in trifectas with Style Me Royal (2) and Quistmer (8) underneath and Blue Slide Park (1) and Fort Charles (3) in the third position.

RACE 9 — Post (4:50) — 1870f | T | C | Clm 16000n3x | CUM | Purse $24,300

Nine fillies and mares going a mile and 3/16ths on the turf, restricted to non-winners of three allowance conditions. Naked Eye (9) is the 2-1 morning line favorite for trainer Juan Arriagada and jockey Israel Rodriguez. The field has some depth at 4-1 and 5-1 with D'argento Bolt (2) and My Gal (4), and the long-shot prices here suggest the public sees a legitimate race with three or four genuine contenders.

Weather caution remains in effect for all turf races on this card.

Race 9

Pace Analysis

The mile and 3/16ths on the turf for fillies and mares going non-winners of three allowance conditions is a sophisticated level compared to earlier races. Pace will be honest but not brutal at this distance. Naked Eye (9) from the outside post 9 for a trainer-jockey combination that had the 4-1 morning line in Race 8 shows the Arriagada barn is operating confidently. D'argento Bolt (2) figures as a key pace presser or stalker type.

Key Contenders

Naked Eye (9) at 2-1 for Arriagada and Rodriguez closes out the day as the public choice. The outside post on the turf at this distance is workable for a horse with enough tactical ability to find the turn. Rodriguez has been consistent, and Arriagada's horses are clearly fit given the multiple entries today.

D'argento Bolt (2) at 4-1 for trainer Gerard Ochoa and jockey D.E. Centeno is the primary alternative to the favorite. Ochoa has multiple runners on today's card and Centeno has been an active presence at Tampa. At 4-1 on a horse that could press or stalk, this is attractive.

My Gal (4) at 4-1 for trainer Victor Carrasco Jr. and jockey Gabriel Maldonado is the other 4-1 morning line horse. A fresh post 4 in a turf route is near ideal, and Maldonado is capable in turf routes.

Secondary Choices

Morgs World (8) at 5-1 for trainer Nik Goodwin and jockey Alonso Quinonez draws post 8 next to the morning line favorite. Goodwin-Quinonez is a combination worth noting, and 5-1 represents solid value if the race opens up.

Silent Melody (5) at 8-1 for Chelsey Moysey and Gaddiel Martinez is the second Moysey runner on the day. The 8-1 price provides legitimate exotic value.

Longshots

Nicky Jolene (1) at 8-1 for trainer Ramon Aguayo and jockey Samuel Marin draws the inside rail on the turf, which in a nine-horse field at this distance creates traffic concerns. At 8-1, Marin's presence is a positive angle, but the post is problematic.

Wicked Luna (6) at 20-1 for trainer Franklin Smith Jr. and jockey Wesley Ho is a mid-level longshot worth including in superfectas.

Jess's Brew (7) at 30-1 for trainer Paul Cudworth and jockey Jacinto Herrera is a deep long shot.

Mighty Madi (3) at 30-1 for trainer Lynn Rarick and jockey Skyler Spanabel is the other 30-1 morning line horse. Both 30-1 shots are throw-outs in straight wagering.

Selections

Win: Naked Eye (9) Place: My Gal (4) Show: D'argento Bolt (2)

Betting Strategy: Accept the 2-1 price on Naked Eye (9) given Arriagada's active barn and Rodriguez's consistent work. Box Naked Eye (9), My Gal (4), and D'argento Bolt (2) in exactas. In trifectas, connect those three on top with Morgs World (8) and Silent Melody (5) in the third position. Superfectas should include Wicked Luna (6) in the fourth spot.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Samuel Marin is the busiest rider on today's Tampa card, with mounts in nearly every race. He draws Fairfield Bay (1) in Race 1, More Vino Rosa (1) in Race 2, Modern Miss (2) in Race 3, Pat'schromecompass (1) in Race 4, Dynamic Actress (3) in Race 5, El Orejon (1) in Race 6, Efficacy (2) in Race 7, Fort Charles (3) in Race 8, and Nicky Jolene (1) in Race 9. Marin has been among the leading riders at Tampa Bay this meet and the volume of quality trainer calls speaks to his standing on the circuit. The fact that Marin rides the 1-1 morning line favorites in both Race 3 and Race 5 indicates significant trainer confidence.

Sonny Leon is the most accomplished rider on the card and arguably the most dangerous. He is aboard Lucky Twist (5) in Race 1, El Ma'any (5) and My Lil Flirt (8) in Race 2 — notably picking up two horses for trainer Mike Dini and trainer Kathleen O'Connell — Mrs. Katz (7) in Race 5, Fifteen Hundred R (9) in Race 7, and Denying (9) in Race 8. Leon's aggressive style in sprint races and his patience in turf routes have made him a consistent threat at Tampa Bay. His presence on Denying (9) in Race 8 at 8-1 over Simone's other runner is the strongest trainer-jockey signal on the card.

Cipriano Gil has a full book of rides including Who's Yer Man (3) in Race 1, Welcome Surprise (4) in Race 3, Belly Dance (3) in Race 4, Gridlock (5) in Race 5, Ball Of Fire (3) in Race 6, Silver Punch (3) in Race 7, and Blue Slide Park (1) in Race 8. Gil's workload across the card shows the confidence multiple trainers have in him, and his mounts in Race 6 and Race 7 deserve particular attention.

Alonso Quinonez rides Danzing Miner (4) in Race 1, Dixi So Fast (4) in Race 2, and Morgs World (8) in Race 9. Quinonez has been steadily effective at Tampa this meet.

Israel Rodriguez picks up mounts in Race 2 on Wickedthiswaycomes (6), Race 4 on Securitylightning (2), Race 8 on Quistmer (8), and Race 9 on Naked Eye (9). Rodriguez has been productive this meet and his connection with trainer Arriagada in Races 8 and 9 is a barn-rider angle worth monitoring.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Michael Simone is the most active trainer on the card, with horses in Race 2 with Knowledge Is Good (7), Race 5 with Gridlock (5), Race 6 with Ball Of Fire (3), Race 7 with no runner listed but active otherwise, Race 8 with Blue Slide Park (1) and Denying (9). A trainer running two horses in the same race, as Simone does in Race 8, and pairing those with different quality jockeys is a significant angle. The fact that Leon takes Denying (9) over Gil's mount on Blue Slide Park (1) strongly suggests Simone's preference in the race.

Kathleen O'Connell has multiple runners on the card: More Vino Rosa (1) and My Lil Flirt (8) in Race 2, Securitylightning (2) in Race 4, and Surprise Package (5) in Race 8. A trainer entering horses in multiple races on the same day at the end of a meet usually has her horses well prepared. The 1-1 morning line on My Lil Flirt (8) reflects public confidence in this barn.

Mike Dini has two horses entered on the card: Lucky Twist (5) in Race 1 and El Ma'any (5) in Race 2. Dini placing both horses with Sonny Leon in Race 1 and then splitting the mounts in Race 2 — Leon picks up My Lil Flirt (8) rather than the Dini horse El Ma'any (5) — suggests Dini's runner in Race 2 is considered less likely than the O'Connell horse.

Kevin Rice runs Wickedthiswaycomes (6) in Race 2 and Mr. Hooligan (5) in Race 6. Rice has been a solid mid-level trainer at Tampa this meet and both of his horses deserve inclusion.

Gerard Ochoa has entries in multiple races: Belly Dance (3) in Race 4, Great Hunt (8) in Race 7, and D'argento Bolt (2) in Race 9. Ochoa's busiest and best opportunity appears to be in Race 9 with D'argento Bolt (2) at 4-1.

Chelsey Moysey runs Precious Sight (3) in Race 2, Lady Embrace (2) in Race 5, and Silent Melody (5) in Race 9. Moysey's busiest day on the card suggests a trainer who has her stable in good condition entering the final week of the meet.

Juan Arriagada runs Quistmer (8) in Race 8 and Naked Eye (9) in Race 9 with Rodriguez on both. The back-to-back entries from the same barn with the same rider suggests an active and confident operation going into the final races of the day.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The best straight win bets on the card based on morning line value and rider/trainer angles are Permian Basin (6) in Race 6 at 4-1 with Sonny Leon, Denying (9) in Race 8 at 8-1 with Sonny Leon, and Mrs. Katz (7) in Race 5 at 2-1 with Sonny Leon. Leon is the thread running through the three best value plays of the day, and his multiple quality mounts represent a unified betting angle.

For exotic wagering, the Pick 5 beginning in Race 5 represents the strongest sequence on the card. The recommended Pick 5 structure:

Race 5: MRS. KATZ (7) and DYNAMIC ACTRESS (3)

Race 6: PERMIAN BASIN (6), BALL OF FIRE (3), and WINE CANDY (2)

Race 7: EFFICACY (2), GREAT HUNT (8), and GOLDINTHESKY (1)

Race 8: DENYING (9), STYLE ME ROYAL (2), and QUISTMER (8)

Race 9: NAKED EYE (9), MY GAL (4), and D’ARGENTO BOLT (2)

This 2x3x3x3x3 structure costs 162 combinations at a dollar base, making it an approachable investment for a sequence that runs through the day's feature and closes with the turf finale.

The daily double in Races 8 and 9 connecting Denying (9) with Naked Eye (9) is a straightforward value play pairing two horses with strong jockey and trainer angles. Expand the double to include Style Me Royal (2) on top with Naked Eye (9) and My Gal (4) on the bottom for coverage.

The exacta in Race 6 deserves particular emphasis. If Permian Basin (6) wins at 4-1 with Ball Of Fire (3) or Wine Candy (2) in the second position, the exacta should return meaningful value. A $2 exacta box across Permian Basin (6), Ball Of Fire (3), Wine Candy (2), and El Orejon (1) covers the primary contenders in the feature and provides solid reward at affordable cost.

Race 2 is the race most likely to produce a monster exotic payout if the 1-1 morning line favorite MY LIL FLIRT (8) loses. Using WICKEDTHISWAYCOMES (6) and KNOWLEDGE IS GOOD (7) on top in trifectas with MY LIL FLIRT (8) underneath and EL MA’ANY (5) at 12-1 in the third position could generate substantial returns at a modest investment. The presence of three co-favorites at varying odds and a 12-1 shot that is trained by a consistent conditioner makes Race 2 the most exotic-friendly race on the card.

The best overall value play of the day is Denying (9) in Race 8 at 8-1. When Simone sends two horses into the same race and deploys Sonny Leon — clearly his preferred jockey — on the 8-1 shot over the 4-1 shot, the market has not caught up to the trainer's intentions. That discrepancy between perceived value and actual trainer intent is the fundamental edge that serious bettors seek and exploit.
