Coach Pope faces Q B Rocket in G1 Breeders Futurity

The 113th Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland on Saturday has come up a compact but high-octane six-horse field, with unbeaten Coach Pope sitting squarely atop the early markets for this key stop on the road to the 2027 Kentucky Derby. Run as Race 9 at 1 1/16 miles with a $650,000 purse and “Win and You're In” entry to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile plus Kentucky Derby qualifying points, the Grade 1 test is set for a 5:16 p.m. ET post and will instantly reshape the two-year-old landscape.

Coach Pope enters off a 12-length demolition of a one-turn mile maiden at Churchill Downs on Sept. 12, where he drew off under minimal urging and stamped himself as one of the most exciting Tapit colts of the fall. Earlier, he had chased home Gaudreau in a salty 6½-furlong Saratoga maiden on Aug. 8, finishing between that colt and future runaway winner U. S. S. Valor, a race that has since proven one of the deepest juvenile sprints of the meet. Churchill Downs reported that Coach Pope breezed a half-mile in 48.20 on Sept. 26, a sharp maintenance move suggesting trainer Kenny McPeek has simply kept him ticking over rather than tightening the screws further ahead of his first two-turn assignment. McPeek has already won the Breeders' Futurity three times and is known for developing late-season two-year-olds who can stretch out, making Coach Pope an obvious key player not just for Saturday but for the broader Derby trail.

If anyone is going to make Coach Pope earn it, it is likely Q B Rocket, the $1.9 million Keeneland September purchase for Spendthrift Farm and Frank Fletcher Racing who turned heads with a front-running debut score at Saratoga in August. That maiden saw Q B Rocket control the tempo before quickening stylishly to hold off Card Man, a Chad Brown colt who has since returned to win going a mile at Belmont, boosting the form and earning Q B Rocket “TDN Rising Star” status. Brad Cox has said in Thoroughbred Daily News that he has liked Q B Rocket from the moment the colt arrived at Keeneland and that the Breeders' Futurity has been the goal all along, hinting that the Saratoga win came with something left in the tank. Q B Rocket tuned up with a five-furlong drill in 1:00.80 at Churchill on Sept. 26, and with Junior Alvarado retaining the mount for Cox he profiles as the primary speed and a classic second-out stakes project. Cox has previously won the Breeders' Futurity with Essential Quality, and Q B Rocket fits the same blueprint of a precocious Saratoga maiden winner stretching out into Grade 1 company.

American History gives Todd Pletcher a live chance to add another Breeders' Futurity to his résumé, coming into the race off an eye-catching debut victory in a 6½-furlong dirt sprint at Saratoga on Alabama Day. The colt has been described in pre-race coverage as an impressive maiden winner alongside Coach Pope and Q B Rocket, and he represents a high-end Constitution purchase for a partnership including WinStar Farm, First Go Racing and CHC Inc., a profile that suggests this spot has been circled for some time. With Hall of Famer John Velazquez named to ride and Pletcher's typical pattern of tightening the screws in the second start, American History projects to sit just behind the speeds and try to make the first run at Q B Rocket turning for home.

The other three entrants—Phone Booth shipping in for Doug O'Neill, Title Worthy for Dallas Stewart and Jaded for Mark Casse—arrive with less fanfare but enough back-class and upside to make the race more than a two-horse affair. Phone Booth has already shown graded-stakes caliber speed by finishing second in both the Best Pal and Del Mar Futurity in California sprints, and his grinding style suggests he could pick up pieces late if the leaders hook up early. Title Worthy brings a perfect two-for-two record on sloppy Kentucky tracks, and if he moves forward on a fast surface he could be the kind of longshot Stewart is famous for sneaking into the exotics. Jaded, meanwhile, switches from a rallying turf win at Kentucky Downs with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, and his pedigree and professionalism first out make him the wild card if he takes to the Keeneland dirt.

From a pace perspective, Q B Rocket is almost certain to be sent from the inside pair of posts, with Phone Booth and Title Worthy in pursuit and Coach Pope likely to adopt a stalking position, the same trip that allowed him to explode away at Churchill. Keeneland's main track typically rewards tactical speed early in the fall meet, but the configuration at 1 1/16 miles can make it difficult for deep closers like Jaded if the front-runners get comfortable fractions. With Breeders' Cup Juvenile starting positions and Derby points on the line, a decisive win by Coach Pope or Q B Rocket would immediately propel the winner to the top tier of early 2027 Kentucky Derby lists and enhance the already-strong reputation of that Aug. 8 Saratoga maiden as a key piece of the juvenile puzzle. For bettors, the race shapes up as a classic choice between raw brilliance and proven class, but whichever colt emerges, the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity once again looks poised to punch a serious ticket to championship company.
