Derby Watch Final Rankings: Intrepido Steps In As Ottinho Exits, Renegade Holds Favorite Spot

The 2026 Kentucky Derby prep season has drawn to a close, and Intrepido (50) has secured a spot on the DRF Watch after trainer Jeff Mullins, initially hesitant following a disappointing Santa Anita Derby performance, bowed to his ownership group's wishes to run her. Meanwhile, Ottinho (39) is out of Derby consideration after trainer Chad Brown made the call to point the colt elsewhere.

Renegade (53) remains the betting favorite at 4-1 for Todd Pletcher, coming off a dominant four-length victory in the Arkansas Derby with a 98 Beyer speed figure. The Todd Pletcher trainee has been the most consistent top-level performer all spring, though the historical reality remains sobering: no betting favorite has won the Kentucky Derby since 2018.

Co-second choices at 5-1 are Brad Cox's talented duo, Commandment (55) and Further Ado (53). Commandment won the Florida Derby by a nose with a 100 Beyer and owns the best Beyer figure in the field at 101. Further Ado, however, turned heads with his dominant 11-length victory in the Blue Grass with a powerful 106 Beyer. That performance has caught the attention of serious handicappers and represents perhaps the most impressive single effort in the prep season.

Chief Wallabee (56) and The Puma (51) occupy the next tier at 8-1 and 10-1 respectively. Bill Mott's colt made headlines with a pair of blinker workouts at Churchill Downs. Monday's half-mile drill in 58 seconds drew particular attention from jockey Junior Alvarado, who reported that the equipment change helped Chief Wallabee focus down the stretch. Handicappers remain cautious about equipment changes entering the Derby, but few have seen a horse of Chief Wallabee's caliber attempt one.

The Puma's Saturday workout at Gulfstream Park impressed Daily Racing Form handicapper David Aragona, who called it the most eye-catching drill of the week. The colt covered nearly seven furlongs with a one-mile gallop-out clocked in just under 1:40 under jockey Javier Castellano. Concerns about kickback from an inside post position remain the primary drawback for this talented colt.

The third tier features So Happy (52) at 12-1, Danon Bourbon at 15-1, Emerging Market at 15-1, and Potente (58) at 15-1. So Happy earned his spot with a decisive 2 3/4-length Santa Anita Derby victory. Emerging Market, trained by Chad Brown, won the Louisiana Derby and showed he can handle the 1 1/4-mile distance despite his modest 90 Beyer at that distance.

Further down the list, Fulleffort and Incredibolt sit at 20-1, with Fulleffort showing promise in his win at the Jeff Ruby Steaks. The Derby Watch rankings also include Golden Tempo, Pavlovian, Albus (37), Wonder Dean, Chip Honcho, Right To Party (35), and Six Speed among other contenders.

One storyline to monitor involves Chip Honcho's final entry decision. Steve Asmussen's colt finished fifth in the Louisiana Derby and currently sits at 50-1 odds. Handicappers view a Chip Honcho entry as significant given the field's perceived shortage of early speed. In a typical 20-horse Derby field, pace presence is at a premium, and Asmussen's colt could provide that element if connections choose to run.

Derby entries were taken Saturday, April 25, at Churchill Downs, with wagering opening Friday, May 1, ahead of the race. The stage is set for the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 2, from Churchill Downs.
