Notable Speech Leads Loaded 2026 Breeders’ Cup Mile

Notable Speech arrives at Keeneland as the horse to beat in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile, but his path to a title defense runs through two very different threats: Rhetorical, a proven Keeneland front-runner, and Deterministic, the high-class rival he recently turned back at Woodbine. The official pre-entries are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 21, with final entries and post positions to follow Oct. 26. The Paulick Report confirms the pre-entry timetable.

Notable Speech has already answered the most important question about his form. On Sept. 12, the Godolphin homebred rallied past Deterministic to win the Woodbine Mile by 1 1/4 lengths, earning another automatic berth through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series. Woodbine's official preview noted that the Charlie Appleby trainee had won the 2,000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes at a mile as a 3-year-old before finishing third, beaten only three-quarters of a length, in the 2025 Breeders' Cup Mile. Woodbine's race coverage also places his recent North American success in the context of an already elite one-mile résumé.

Deterministic has the tactical profile to make the rematch more complicated. He can either press the pace or settle behind it, an especially valuable asset if Rhetorical is challenged early. The Woodbine result showed that Deterministic could control the race but could not repel Notable Speech's late acceleration; the shorter, two-turn Keeneland layout should create a different examination than Woodbine's long straightaway. That distinction matters because a horse with Deterministic's versatility may be able to secure position before the closers begin their run, rather than leaving the outcome entirely to a stretch sprint.

Rhetorical owns the clearest local advantage. He became the first back-to-back winner of Keeneland's Coolmore Turf Mile since Gio Ponti in 2010-11, leading throughout on Oct. 3 and finishing 2 1/4 lengths clear in 1:36.35 for the mile on firm ground. Keeneland's official chart of the race records opening fractions of 24.73 seconds and 49.76, followed by a 1:14.07 six-furlong split—an ideal controlled tempo for a horse with his finishing speed. Keeneland's report confirms that the victory delivered an automatic Mile berth.

The pace is therefore the handicapping hinge. Rhetorical is most dangerous when allowed to dictate, while Notable Speech and Deterministic are better served by a race that gives them room to build momentum. Early market indications have made Notable Speech the clear favorite, with Deterministic among the principal U.S. challengers, while Rhetorical has been priced as a more generous alternative despite his course record. US Racing's current odds board lists Notable Speech at +175, Deterministic at +700 and Rhetorical at +2500, though those numbers remain subject to change before the draw.

For now, Notable Speech owns the strongest recent victory and the defending-champion narrative, Rhetorical owns the most persuasive Keeneland evidence, and Deterministic owns the trip versatility capable of exploiting either scenario. Until the official field and post positions are released, the soundest early read is that Notable Speech deserves favoritism—but a clean run and a manageable pace will determine whether he becomes the first repeat Mile winner since Wise Dan's 2012-13 double.
