Ombudsman will get one final opportunity to turn a brilliant European campaign into an American championship when he starts in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on Oct. 31. John Gosden confirmed the Godolphin-owned five-year-old's participation after the colt emerged from his Champion Stakes victory in good order, according to Racing Post.
The decision gives Ombudsman a chance to close his career on racing's biggest international stage. He defeated Calandagan by nearly four lengths at Ascot on Oct. 17, reversing the result of last year's Champion Stakes, with William Buick aboard for the Gosdens. Godolphin's official race record lists the victory over 1¼ miles on good ground and identifies Ombudsman's rating as 132 before the race. Godolphin's racecard confirms the winning combination of Ombudsman, John and Thady Gosden, and Buick.
The form is compelling, but the assignment is not without a handicapping question. Keeneland's Turf is 1½ miles, a quarter-mile farther than the Champion Stakes and longer than the 1¼-mile races in which the Gosdens have campaigned him this season. Ombudsman's 2026 résumé includes Group 1 wins in the Dubai Turf, Prince of Wales's Stakes and Champion Stakes, yet he was only fourth in the Juddmonte International before rebounding at Ascot. As Daily Racing Form reported, Gosden believes the Keeneland course should suit his charge, a significant consideration for a horse whose acceleration has been his defining weapon.
Ombudsman also arrives with the practical advantage of already having secured a Breeders' Cup berth through his Prince of Wales's Stakes victory, one of the series' automatic qualifying races. The Champion Stakes itself was another Breeders' Cup Challenge Series event, meaning the Ascot performance further strengthened his credentials even though the trip to Kentucky remained a decision for the owners. TrueNicks noted that his Royal Ascot win carried an automatic, fees-paid berth in the Turf.
This will be Ombudsman's first start in the United States and, barring a change of plan, his last appearance before entering stud for Godolphin in 2027. Gosden has won six Breeders' Cup races, including the 2018 Turf with Enable, but Ombudsman presents a different challenge: a high-class 1¼-mile performer stretching out for the first time on foreign soil. He was quickly installed as the market favorite after the Ascot victory, but the decisive handicapping issue at Keeneland will be whether his turn of foot survives the longer distance.
