Sovereignty finished his championship season exactly where his résumé demanded: at the top of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's final 2026 poll. His Breeders' Cup Classic victory secured the No. 1 position, while the weekend's other major winners reshaped the race for year-end honors and pushed three previously overlooked names into the top 10.
The final vote, covering performances through Nov. 1, gave Sovereignty 290 points, well clear of Distaff winner Nitrogen at 250 and Mile winner Deterministic at 211. The rankings were decided by national media on the NTRA's 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-1 scale. Sovereignty had entered the Breeders' Cup as the narrow poll leader over Forever Young, with only one point separating the two in the previous vote. Paulick Report's pre-Breeders' Cup standings documented how little separated the Classic favorites before the decisive weekend.
The Classic win also gave Sovereignty the strongest possible closing argument in a season already loaded with major-race credentials. The Godolphin homebred, trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado, went out with a victory in the $7 million showcase and improved to 8-3-1 in 13 career starts. The Breeders' Cup preview had framed the race as a generational meeting between Sovereignty and Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo; in the end, it was Sovereignty who supplied the closing statement.
Nitrogen's move from fourth to second was nearly as significant. Her Distaff victory displaced Forever Young from the runner-up spot and confirmed that her 2026 campaign could withstand the pressure of a championship-day showdown. Deterministic made the largest jump among the established contenders, rising from ninth to third after defeating Notable Speech in the Mile. The result transformed a horse previously outside the poll's upper tier into a serious Horse of the Year factor.
The weekend's breakthrough performers produced the poll's most dramatic movement. T O Elvis climbed from 15th to fourth after running down Englishman by 1 1/4 lengths in the Cygames Breeders' Cup Sprint. The official Breeders' Cup report credited the Japanese-based sprinter with a six-race winning streak, a 1:08.20 performance for six furlongs and seven victories from 10 lifetime starts. His fourth-place finish in the poll also strengthens his case for top sprinter honors, particularly because the Sprint was only his second start of the year.
Kathynmarissa rose from 22nd to sixth after winning the Filly & Mare Turf, while Ways and Means surged from 18th to eighth after a dominant performance in the Filly & Mare Sprint. Ways and Means won the $1 million race by 6 1/4 lengths as the $4.14 favorite, a performance detailed in the official Breeders' Cup race report. Chad Brown and Flavien Prat also added another championship-level result to a weekend in which Brown's stable captured both the Filly & Mare Turf and Filly & Mare Sprint.
Knightsbridge held fifth, despite slipping from third, while Forever Young fell to seventh after finishing behind Sovereignty in the Classic. Englishman remained ninth and Golden Tempo 10th, with The Puma, Magnitude, Bacio and Hughes among the leading horses receiving votes. The final ballot leaves Sovereignty with the clearest overall résumé, but Nitrogen, Deterministic and the Breeders' Cup winners ensure that the 2026 Eclipse Award debate will extend well beyond the Classic winner's farewell.
