Requires three valid speed figures: the gain from 3-back to 2-back must be at least 4 points, and the gain from 2-back to last race must also be at least 4 points. A single figure improvement can be noise; two consecutive gains of this magnitude suggest a horse on a genuine upward trajectory — responding to training, recovering from a layoff, or maturing. This is the ascending-fitness angle most directly tied to trainer competence. These horses are often still undervalued by the market because the most recent odds were set before the last improvement registered.
