Race Day Overview — Assiniboia Downs, August 24, 2026

Assiniboia Downs kicks off its Sunday card with eight races spanning a range of conditions from maiden specials to optional claimers, with purses running from $10,000 to $40,000. The feature event is Race 1, a $40,000 RC Anderson Stakes run at 1760 furlongs over the main track, which draws just three horses but promises a compelling pace scenario between two barn-mates trained by Michael Nault. The rest of the card leans heavily on the claiming ranks, with several races offering legitimate wagering value in the lower claiming brackets that define the Assiniboia summer meet.

The HISA data breach reported this week has prompted mandatory password resets for portal users beginning today, August 24. Horseplayers using HISA-linked platforms for wagering and registration are advised to update credentials before placing wagers. This administrative disruption has not impacted race-day operations at Assiniboia Downs, which operates under Manitoba Racing Commission jurisdiction with its own regulatory framework.

The Assiniboia summer meet is in its final stretch, and jockey standings are tight. Rachaad Knights and Neville Stephenson have been the dominant riders at the meet, while Antonio Whitehall has been consistently competitive. On the training side, Michael Nault, Jason Homer, and the two-headed Jared Brown operation have been among the meet leaders. Today's card reflects those patterns, with these connections appearing prominently across all eight races.

Weather and Track Conditions

Winnipeg's forecast for August 24, 2026 calls for partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, roughly 75-78 degrees Fahrenheit, with light winds out of the southwest at 10-15 km/h. No precipitation is expected through the afternoon, which is favorable for a fast or good main track.

Assiniboia Downs runs a dirt oval, and the track has been listed as fast in recent days following a dry stretch in the Winnipeg area. The inside of the track has shown some wear as the meet progresses into its later stages, which is typical for Assiniboia in August. Maintenance crews have been working the rail to keep the surface consistent, but late-meet track bias tendencies at Assiniboia typically favor horses that can position within the first three early and are not forced extremely wide into the far turn.

Post position bias at Assiniboia Downs over six furlongs and longer routes tends to be relatively neutral at the inside posts, though horses breaking from posts 1 and 2 in sprint routes (under 1320 furlongs) can occasionally get shuffled back in traffic if the pace is hot. Outside posts beyond 6 in a full field can carry a modest disadvantage in one-turn routes due to the extra ground covered. In today's generally compact fields, post position bias is a lesser factor than pace and class.

RACE 1 — Post 8:30/(7:30)/6:30/5:30 — 1760f | D | N | RCAndrsn40k | BOF | Purse $40,000

Pace Analysis

The RC Anderson Stakes at a mile and a quarter on dirt draws only three horses, and the pace scenario is fascinating given that the top two are trained by Michael Nault. Clippity Cop (1) is the morning-line favorite at 1-1, while Rise Again (2) is actually listed at 0-1, suggesting the morning line compiler views Rise Again as the overwhelming public choice once the public gets a look at the entries. With two horses from the same barn, tactical decisions by trainer Nault will be pivotal. Our Last Penny (3) at 50-1 is the clear outsider. In a route of this length with a small field, pace is likely to be moderate and the winner will need to produce a strong sustained run in the final quarter.

Key Contenders

Rise Again (2) is listed at odds-on and draws the rail, trained by Michael Nault and ridden by Antonio Whitehall. The morning line of 0-1 signals that this horse is considered the dominant class in the race. In the RC Anderson Stakes, which is a restricted stakes condition, Rise Again appears to be the controlling horse with likely tactical advantage at a route distance. Whitehall has been solid in spots for Nault this meet, and the trainer clearly trusts this jockey with his top horse in the feature. At this distance, a horse with the ability to settle and produce a strong turn of foot in the stretch will be rewarded.

Clippity Cop (1) at 1-1 is the other Nault runner and shares the barn with Rise Again. Patterson Javaniel R picks up the mount. When two horses from the same barn face off in a small-field stakes, the connections typically let them run on their merits rather than engaging in tactical manipulation, which means Clippity Cop needs to be better than Rise Again on the day to win. The morning line suggests the public money will land on Rise Again, but Clippity Cop at even money represents solid value if this horse has the higher ceiling.

Secondary Choices

No true secondary choices exist outside the two Nault horses given the race structure. The analysis pivots to the relative merits of the barn-mates.

Longshots

Our Last Penny (3) at 50-1 is trained by Steven Gaskin and ridden by Rachaad Knights. In a three-horse race, this horse draws significant interest simply because of the jockey assignment. Knights is the meet's leading or co-leading rider, and Gaskin has sent out competitive horses at this meet. A 50-1 morning line in a three-horse field, however, suggests a significant gap in class or current form. Our Last Penny (3) is included in exotic coverage but represents a distant third on merit.

Betting Strategy

In a three-horse race of this nature, the win pool will be thin and the juice on the favorite brutal. Rise Again (2) is likely to go off below even money, making win wagering poor value. The best approach is to key Rise Again (2) over Clippity Cop (1) in the exacta, while also boxing the two Nault horses. A small saver on Clippity Cop (1) to win is defensible at even money if you want exposure to both horses. Our Last Penny (3) should be used in exacta and trifecta combinations only as a deep backup, particularly in the trifecta beneath the two favorites.

Selections

Win: Rise Again (2) Place: Clippity Cop (1) Show: Our Last Penny (3)

RACE 2 — Post 9:00/(8:00)/7:00/6:00 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 10000n3l | BUN | Purse $10,100

Pace Analysis

This six-furlong claiming sprint for horses with no more than three lifetime wins is a competitive affair with six runners. Sgt. Filkow (1) is the odds-on choice at 0-1, suggesting a dominant public selection. The pace will likely be set from the front, and in a six-furlong sprint at Assiniboia, the ability to clear to the lead early or press the pace without getting into a speed duel is critical. With the favorite likely on or near the front, the field will have to respond early or give ground on the turn.

Key Contenders

Sgt. Filkow (1) trained by Tiffany Husbands and ridden by Cumberbatch R is the morning-line dominant choice. A 0-1 morning line at this level indicates Husbands has this horse cranked up and ready, and the form figures or recent works must be compelling enough to warrant near-certainty odds. Husbands has been active in the Assiniboia claiming ranks and knows how to place horses to win. Cumberbatch is a capable hand that has been using this meet to build experience. Despite the brutal win-pool value, Sgt. Filkow (1) is the horse to beat.

Amma Jaw Dropper (6) at 5-1 trained by Ryan Desjarlais and ridden by Rachaad Knights is a significant contender. Desjarlais runs a competitive barn at Assiniboia, and the decision to put Knights aboard is a clear intent-to-win signal. At 5-1, this horse offers genuine wagering value if Sgt. Filkow (1) stumbles or faces pace pressure. Knights' ability to find position and conserve energy through the turn gives this horse a definite chance to get up late.

Secondary Choices

Little Eddie (2) at 6-1 trained by Ryan Desjarlais and ridden by Sven Balroop is interesting as a second Desjarlais entry. The barn has two horses in this race, which is worth noting. Desjarlais may be hoping one of them catches a pace meltdown if Sgt. Filkow (1) gets challenged early. Little Eddie (2) at 6-1 with Balroop aboard merits inclusion in exotics.

Jaya Rules (4) at 10-1 trained by Jared Brown and ridden by Neville Stephenson is a legitimate player. Brown has been one of the more active winning trainers at this meet, and Stephenson is a polished jockey with good instincts at Assiniboia. A 10-1 morning line in a race of this class level may understate the horse's chance somewhat, making Jaya Rules (4) a value play in the exotics.

Longshots

Not True (3) at 12-1 trained by Marion C Johnson and ridden by Antonio Whitehall at least carries a competent rider. At this price, Not True (3) would need a pace meltdown and perfect trip to factor, but Whitehall's experience keeps the horse relevant in trifecta coverage.

Turn It Loose (5) at 15-1 trained by Judy Hunter and ridden by Shavon Townsend is the longest shot among the named runners in the win column. Hunter is a smaller presence in the standings, and Townsend is a developing rider. Turn It Loose (5) rounds out trifecta coverage but is a distant consideration.

Betting Strategy

With Sgt. Filkow (1) likely to go off at nearly unplayable odds, the best approach is to single or key Amma Jaw Dropper (6) against the field in pick sequences and use Amma Jaw Dropper (6) and Jaya Rules (4) in exacta combinations beneath Sgt. Filkow (1). The exacta of Sgt. Filkow (1) over Amma Jaw Dropper (6) is the primary ticket. Also play Amma Jaw Dropper (6) over Sgt. Filkow (1) as a reverse at a reduced amount. Trifectas should include Sgt. Filkow (1), Amma Jaw Dropper (6), and Jaya Rules (4) in all combinations.

Selections

Win: Sgt. Filkow (1) Place: Amma Jaw Dropper (6) Show: Jaya Rules (4)

RACE 3 — Post 9:25/(8:25)/7:25/6:25 — 1210f | D | C | Clm 3000n1y | BUN | Purse $10,000

Pace Analysis

Five and a half furlongs for horses that have not won in a year at the $3,000 claiming level is the softest condition on the card. Six horses contest this sprint, and pace will be a key factor. Bossy Holiday (2) at 1-1 figures to be the controlling speed, and how the race sets up behind the favorite will determine the exotic outcome. If Bossy Holiday (2) gets a soft lead, this race is likely over by the time the field hits the stretch call.

Key Contenders

Bossy Holiday (2) at 1-1 trained by Monique Goulet and ridden by Rachaad Knights is the overwhelming choice. The combination of the leading jockey and a trainer who places horses aggressively at Assiniboia is powerful. At this claiming level, horses with even marginal class advantages can dominate, and the morning line reflects confidence. Knights aboard an odds-on horse at a distance where the track has been playing favorably for pace-setters creates a formidable package.

Ave's In Command (4) at 3-1 trained by Robert Maybin and ridden by Christopher Roy Mamdeen is the main danger. Maybin has been a consistent presence at Assiniboia, and Mamdeen is a capable jockey who has been building his book this meet. At 3-1, Ave's In Command (4) needs Bossy Holiday (2) to stumble or face significant pace pressure.

Secondary Choices

Delvecchio (3) at 5-1 trained by Tom Gardipy Jr and ridden by Javaniel R Patterson is an interesting overlay candidate. Gardipy runs two horses in this race, which is a signal of barn confidence. Patterson aboard makes this a credible secondary selection. Delvecchio (3) may offer value if the pace scenario unfolds in a way that benefits a stalker.

Ghost Cowboy (6) at 6-1 trained by Jerry Gourneau and ridden by Damario Bynoe merits mention at this price. Gourneau is active at the meet and Bynoe has been a useful rider. From post 6 in a short sprint at Assiniboia, Ghost Cowboy (6) needs a clean trip to factor, but 6-1 is not an unreasonable price for the risk.

Longshots

Beckett's Best (1) at 20-1 trained by Tom Gardipy Jr and ridden by Tyrone Nelson is the second Gardipy entry. Nelson is a journeyman who is capable of opportunistic rides when the pace collapses. At 20-1, Beckett's Best (1) is best used only in trifecta and superfecta coverage.

Silvercreek Kid (5) at 15-1 trained by Cora Champagne and ridden by Neville Stephenson is an interesting ticket at this price given the jockey. Champagne is a smaller operation, but Stephenson is the kind of rider who can find a trip when the price is right. Silvercreek Kid (5) deserves a small trifecta inclusion.

Betting Strategy

Bossy Holiday (2) is the kind of horse that wins races like this wire to wire, and the exotic structure should reflect that. Use Bossy Holiday (2) on top in exactas paired with Ave's In Command (4) and Delvecchio (3). In trifectas, key Bossy Holiday (2) over the field and spread the bottom two positions across Ave's In Command (4), Delvecchio (3), Ghost Cowboy (6), and Silvercreek Kid (5). The win pool value is poor on the favorite, so concentrate wagers in exactas and trifectas.

Selections

Win: Bossy Holiday (2) Place: Ave's In Command (4) Show: Delvecchio (3)

RACE 4 — Post 10:10/(9:10)/8:10/7:10 — 1320f | D | AO | OClm 22500b | BUN | Purse $21,000

Pace Analysis

Six furlongs in an optional claimer at $22,500 is the classiest claiming event on the afternoon card, and six horses provide a competitive field. Taillights (1) at 1-1 is the morning-line choice, but Diamond Rim (6) at 3-1 and Chief Brady (5) at 4-1 make this a three-way battle on paper. The pace depends heavily on whether Taillights (1) controls the front. If a challenger presses the pace early, the race opens up for closers, making Diamond Rim (6) and Chief Brady (5) dangerous.

Key Contenders

Taillights (1) at 1-1 trained by Steve Keplin Jr and ridden by Damario Bynoe is the morning-line choice from the rail. At the optional claimer level, horses who go to post at 1-1 typically have demonstrated a clear class edge or are in the form of their lives. Keplin is a competent Assiniboia trainer, and Bynoe has been a capable jockey at this meet. From the inside post, Taillights (1) should control pace or sit close.

Diamond Rim (6) at 3-1 trained by Steven Gaskin and ridden by Antonio Whitehall is the primary danger. Gaskin runs multiple horses today, indicating a full, active barn, and the decision to put Whitehall up on Diamond Rim (6) from post 6 in this spot suggests the connections believe this horse has a turn of foot that can overcome the outside post. Whitehall is experienced enough to handle the extra ground and find position efficiently. At 3-1, Diamond Rim (6) is the best overlay in this race.

Secondary Choices

Chief Brady (5) at 4-1 trained by Jerry Gourneau and ridden by Neville Stephenson is a genuine threat. Gourneau has been one of the more active trainers at this meet, and Stephenson's experience in optional claimer fields at Assiniboia makes him dangerous in spots like this. Chief Brady (5) from post 5 with Stephenson likely can find a stalking position and be ready to pounce in the stretch.

Dreaming Of Kona (2) at 6-1 trained by Steven Gaskin and ridden by Rachaad Knights is the third Gaskin horse to appear prominently today. Two Gaskin horses in the same race — Dreaming Of Kona (2) and Diamond Rim (6) — creates interesting tactical dynamics. Knights on Dreaming Of Kona (2) could be used to soften Taillights (1) and set it up for Diamond Rim (6), or both could be genuine win candidates. At 6-1, Dreaming Of Kona (2) is worth including in all exotic combinations.

Longshots

Kauai Dan (4) at 8-1 trained by Jared Brown and ridden by Kerron Khelawan is an outside threat. Brown's barn has been competitive, and Khelawan has shown the ability to put horses in good positions. At 8-1, Kauai Dan (4) is a trifecta inclusion but would need a perfect trip.

Falsely Accused (3) at 20-1 trained by Jason Homer and ridden by Shavon Townsend is a distant consideration. Homer has two horses on the card today but this entry at 20-1 suggests it is well below the class of the top choices. Falsely Accused (3) can be used only in superfecta coverage.

Betting Strategy

The Gaskin barn running two horses here creates a compelling angle for exotic players. Diamond Rim (6) at 3-1 is the best value in the race and deserves a win bet. Structure exactas with Taillights (1) and Diamond Rim (6) keyed against each other and include Chief Brady (5) in trifecta combinations. The key ticket is Diamond Rim (6) over Taillights (1) over Chief Brady (5) in the trifecta, with a backup of Taillights (1) over Diamond Rim (6) over Chief Brady (5). Dreaming Of Kona (2) deserves inclusion in all-in trifecta spreads.

Selections

Win: Diamond Rim (6) Place: Taillights (1) Show: Chief Brady (5)

RACE 5 — Post 10:55/(9:55)/8:55/7:55 — 1210f | D | C | Clm 5500 | BUN | Purse $13,200

Pace Analysis

Five and a half furlongs at the $5,500 claiming level with seven runners is the deepest field on the card, and the pace analysis is complex. Hay Scooby Doo (5) at 2-1 is the morning-line choice, but Bling Bling Bling (7) at 3-1 and Rockets Red Flair (4) at 4-1 create legitimate competition. With seven horses in a short sprint, early positioning is critical and the pace figures to be contested.

Key Contenders

Hay Scooby Doo (5) at 2-1 trained by Jerry Gourneau and ridden by Neville Stephenson is the public selection. Gourneau runs multiple horses on today's card, and Hay Scooby Doo (5) is clearly his most promising entry given the jockey assignment. Stephenson's meet-long consistency in this class range makes this a reliable choice. At 2-1, the price is acceptable for a horse in this form.

Bling Bling Bling (7) at 3-1 trained by Lise Pruitt and ridden by Rachaad Knights is the value selection. The outside post is a concern in a seven-horse sprint, but Knights is skilled at navigating traffic and finding angles. Pruitt is a competent claiming trainer, and the decision to put the meet's top rider up on this horse signals genuine win intent. At 3-1 with Knights aboard, Bling Bling Bling (7) is the best play in the race for value-conscious bettors.

Secondary Choices

Rockets Red Flair (4) at 4-1 trained by Victoria Morse and ridden by Kerron Khelawan is a legitimate pace threat. From post 4, Rockets Red Flair (4) is positioned to either control the early running or sit in a stalking position behind any loose leader. Khelawan has been a solid performer at this meet, and Morse has placed horses well. At 4-1, this is a live secondary selection.

Red Road Runner (3) at 5-1 trained by Michael Nault and ridden by Antonio Whitehall is an interesting Nault entry. Nault has had a productive meet, and Whitehall is a reliable jockey at this level. From post 3, Red Road Runner (3) has a good stalking position and could benefit from any pace collapse.

Longshots

Tiz Romantic (6) at 6-1 trained by Tom Gardipy Jr and ridden by Tyrone Nelson is the best-priced longshot. In a race with multiple legitimate contenders going off at short prices, Tiz Romantic (6) at 6-1 with some talent behind it deserves trifecta consideration.

Fleet Of Hoof (1) at 7-1 trained by Dale Zawislak and ridden by Mathew Bennett is the second-best-priced longshot. Zawislak is a smaller operation, but 7-1 in a seven-horse field represents fair odds on a horse that could benefit from the inside post if the pace gets hot early and the field fans out.

Lt. Norm (2) at 25-1 trained by Sherry Laing and ridden by Sven Balroop is a distant consideration. The long price reflects a significant class or form gap. Lt. Norm (2) is used only in superfecta coverage.

Betting Strategy

This race sets up as the best value event on the card for serious exotic players. Key Bling Bling Bling (7) and Hay Scooby Doo (5) in exactas in both directions, and spread trifectas across Hay Scooby Doo (5), Bling Bling Bling (7), Rockets Red Flair (4), and Red Road Runner (3). A win play on Bling Bling Bling (7) at 3-1 is recommended. Also consider a win saver on Rockets Red Flair (4) if the price holds at 4-1 or better.

Selections

Win: Bling Bling Bling (7) Place: Hay Scooby Doo (5) Show: Rockets Red Flair (4)

RACE 6 — Post 11:20/(10:20)/9:20/8:20 — 1320f | D | M | Md 10000 | BUN | Purse $15,000

Pace Analysis

Six furlongs for maiden $10,000 claimers draws eight horses and is the most unpredictable race on the card. Maiden races at this level are notoriously difficult to handicap, as horses are largely unproven and form can be inconsistent. Areunotentertained (7) at 1-1 is the public choice, while I Conduit (5) at 2-1 is the clear second choice. These two figure to dominate the win pool, and the pace will likely be set by whichever of the outsiders breaks alertly.

Key Contenders

Areunotentertained (7) at 1-1 trained by Jared Brown and ridden by Kerron Khelawan is the morning-line choice. Brown has been one of the more active winning trainers at this meet, and placing his leading maiden choice with Khelawan signals confidence. In a maiden $10,000 race, a horse going off at 1-1 typically has either been knocking on the door or has the physical profile to dominate this field. Khelawan's ability to rate and position in a full eight-horse field is a key advantage.

I Conduit (5) at 2-1 trained by Perry Cavanaugh and ridden by Javaniel R Patterson is the clear second choice. From post 5 in an eight-horse field, I Conduit (5) has a neutral post position with clean sight lines to the early pace. Cavanaugh's decision to use Patterson suggests the trainer has confidence in this horse's readiness. At 2-1, this represents fair value against the short-priced favorite.

Secondary Choices

Onmyradar (8) at 6-1 trained by Michael L Pierce and ridden by Tyrone Nelson is the best secondary choice. Pierce has been an active trainer at Assiniboia this meet, and the assignment of Nelson to this horse at the outside post is notable. In a maiden race, the outside post is a disadvantage, but if Onmyradar (8) can angle in and find a good trip, the 6-1 price is attractive. Nelson is a capable hand who can get horses to settle.

Sea Gold Go (3) at 8-1 trained by Jason Homer and ridden by Neville Stephenson is an interesting live longshot. Homer's barn has been productive at this meet, and putting Stephenson up on this maiden at 8-1 is a potential overlay play. From post 3, Sea Gold Go (3) has a decent position and a quality rider.

Longshots

Oh So Bouncy (4) at 12-1 trained by Jason Homer and ridden by Shavon Townsend is the second Homer entry. Homer running two horses in this maiden field is a positive barn indicator, though the 12-1 morning line suggests Oh So Bouncy (4) is the lesser of the two. Townsend is a developing jockey, and this is included in trifecta coverage only.

Flynnstone (1) at 25-1 trained by Jerry Gourneau and ridden by Dario Dalrymple is a deep longshot. The combination of a lesser rider and a 25-1 morning line suggests Flynnstone (1) is here to fill out the field. Superfecta use only.

Special Gift (2) at 30-1 trained by Jared Brown and ridden by Antonio Whitehall is interesting given the trainer. Brown runs two horses in this field, with Areunotentertained (7) being the stable's main hope. Special Gift (2) at 30-1 with Whitehall could be a dangerous outsider if the stable has surprises, but the morning line suggests Brown's confidence is firmly with his other entry. Superfecta coverage only.

Pleasant Time (6) at 30-1 trained by Steven Thompson and ridden by Roger Hewitt is the weakest entry on paper. At 30-1, Pleasant Time (6) fills out superfecta tickets only.

Betting Strategy

The two chalk horses — Areunotentertained (7) and I Conduit (5) — will dominate the win pool, making exactas between them poor value. The play in this race is to take a shot on Onmyradar (8) or Sea Gold Go (3) as the third leg of a trifecta behind the two favorites. Structure tickets as Areunotentertained (7) and I Conduit (5) over each other over Onmyradar (8), Sea Gold Go (3), and Oh So Bouncy (4). A small win play on I Conduit (5) at 2-1 is a defensible alternative to betting the 1-1 favorite in the win pool.

Selections

Win: Areunotentertained (7) Place: I Conduit (5) Show: Onmyradar (8)

RACE 7 — Post 11:45/(10:45)/9:45/8:45 — 1540f | D | A | Alw 19500n2l | BUN | Purse $19,500

Pace Analysis

Seven furlongs in an allowance condition for horses that have not won two lifetime races is the classiest non-stakes contest on the card. Eight runners provide a competitive field, and the pace scenario is the most interesting of the afternoon. Smokeintheair (3) at 2-1 and Money Mitch (1) at 3-1, both trained by Michael L Pierce, are barn-mates who will likely set up the race tactically. With two Pierce horses in the field, pace can be manipulated to benefit the stable's preferred runner, which is likely Smokeintheair (3) given the shorter price. He's My Uncle (8) at 4-1 and Acquire (5) at 6-1 round out the upper tier.

Key Contenders

Smokeintheair (3) at 2-1 trained by Michael L Pierce and ridden by Sven Balroop is the morning-line choice. Pierce running two horses in this allowance field is a serious intent-to-win signal, and Smokeintheair (3) is the shorter-priced of the two stable entries. Balroop has been a steady performer at Assiniboia this meet. In a seven-furlong allowance, a horse with tactical speed and the ability to sustain a run past the six-furlong mark is essential, and Pierce's conditioning record at this distance is relevant.

Money Mitch (1) at 3-1 trained by Michael L Pierce and ridden by Antonio Whitehall shares the barn with Smokeintheair (3). Whitehall is the more experienced rider of the two Pierce jockeys in this race, and from the rail in a route, Money Mitch (1) has every opportunity to control the early pace or rate just off the leader. If Pierce's preference is to win with Smokeintheair (3), Money Mitch (1) could serve a pacemaking role, but at 3-1, this horse must be respected as a genuine win candidate. In route races at Assiniboia, the inside post has been relatively neutral, and Whitehall's experience handling rail draws is a positive.

Secondary Choices

He's My Uncle (8) at 4-1 trained by Jason Homer and ridden by Tyrone Nelson is the most compelling secondary choice. Homer's barn has been active and successful at this meet, and the outside post draw in a route is the primary concern. However, at 4-1, He's My Uncle (8) offers solid value if Homer has the horse ready to run a big number. Nelson aboard is a manageable concern given the jockey's familiarity with the Assiniboia surface.

Acquire (5) at 6-1 trained by Jason Homer and ridden by Shavon Townsend is the second Homer entry, giving the trainer two horses in this allowance field. Homer using two runners here mirrors the Pierce strategy and suggests the trainer believes the class of the field is beatable with multiple entries. Acquire (5) from post 5 is well-positioned in mid-field and could close ground late in the seven-furlong trip.

Longshots

Princeoftheprairie (6) at 8-1 trained by Carl Anderson and ridden by Kerron Khelawan is an interesting price. Anderson is less prominent in the standings than Pierce or Homer, but a fresh horse at 8-1 with Khelawan aboard merits attention in the exotics. Princeoftheprairie (6) from post 6 is a reasonable stalking position.

Red Dirt Alley (4) at 12-1 trained by Jerry Gourneau and ridden by Neville Stephenson is a deeper longshot with a capable jockey. Gourneau runs multiple horses today, and Stephenson's ability to find a trip gives Red Dirt Alley (4) a puncher's chance in the trifecta.

War Is Hell (7) at 15-1 trained by Wendy Anderson and ridden by Damario Bynoe is a distant consideration. Anderson has two horses in this race, with Acknowledge (2) being the other, and at 15-1 and 20-1 respectively, neither is highly regarded by the morning-line compiler. War Is Hell (7) is trifecta coverage only.

Acknowledge (2) at 20-1 trained by Wendy Anderson and ridden by Christopher Roy Mamdeen is the longest-priced horse in the field aside from the 50-1 entrant in Race 1. At this price in an allowance field, Acknowledge (2) faces a steep class challenge. Superfecta coverage only.

Betting Strategy

This is the most complex wagering race on the card due to the dual barn strategies from Pierce and Homer. The primary ticket is Smokeintheair (3) over Money Mitch (1) over He's My Uncle (8) in the trifecta. Reverse the exacta: Money Mitch (1) over Smokeintheair (3) at a reduced amount. At 4-1, a win play on He's My Uncle (8) is a smart value bet to close the card. Also include Acquire (5) in trifecta spreads for deeper value.

Selections

Win: Smokeintheair (3) Place: Money Mitch (1) Show: He's My Uncle (8)

Jockey Notes and Insights

Rachaad Knights is the headline rider on this card, appearing in six of eight races. His mounts include Rise Again (2) in Race 1 — wait, reviewing the card: Knights rides Our Last Penny (3) in Race 1, Amma Jaw Dropper (6) in Race 2, Bossy Holiday (2) in Race 3, Dreaming Of Kona (2) in Race 4, Bling Bling Bling (7) in Race 5, and SMOKEINTHEAIR… correcting: in Race 7, Knights does not have a mount listed. His best opportunities are Bossy Holiday (2) in Race 3 and Amma Jaw Dropper (6) in Race 2. Knights' ability to keep horses relaxed in the early stages and accelerate into the stretch is particularly well-suited to the Assiniboia layout.

Neville Stephenson has a similarly loaded book, riding in most races on the card. His best chance to win is Chief Brady (5) in Race 4 and Hay Scooby Doo (5) in Race 5. Stephenson is a seasoned rider who understands the Assiniboia track tendencies and does his best work on pace-pressers and stalkers at the six-furlong distance.

Antonio Whitehall has several quality mounts including Rise Again (2) in Race 1, Diamond Rim (6) in Race 4, Red Road Runner (3) in Race 5, and Money Mitch (1) in Race 7. Whitehall's experience in stakes and optional claiming fields makes him a reliable choice in the upper-class races today. His assignment on Diamond Rim (6) in Race 4 is arguably his best win opportunity of the afternoon.

Javaniel R Patterson rides Clippity Cop (1) in Race 1, Delvecchio (3) in Race 3, and I Conduit (5) in Race 6. His mount on I Conduit (5) in the maiden race is noteworthy, as Patterson has demonstrated the ability to get maiden horses to settle and run their best races.

Kerron Khelawan rides Kauai Dan (4) in Race 4, Rockets Red Flair (4) in Race 5, Areunotentertained (7) in Race 6, and Princeoftheprairie (6) in Race 7. His best opportunity is Areunotentertained (7) in Race 6, where the horse is the morning-line favorite.

Damario Bynoe rides Ghost Cowboy (6) in Race 3, Taillights (1) in Race 4, and War Is Hell (7) in Race 7. His strongest chance is Taillights (1) in Race 4, where the morning-line favors that horse.

Sven Balroop rides Little Eddie (2) in Race 2, Lt. Norm (2) in Race 5, and Smokeintheair (3) in Race 7, where he has his best win opportunity of the day.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Michael Nault is the most notable trainer today, running two entries in the featured RC Anderson Stakes. Having both Clippity Cop (1) and Rise Again (2) in a three-horse stakes field gives Nault an extraordinary degree of control over the race, and the morning line suggests the stable's preferred runner is Rise Again (2). Nault's additional entry Red Road Runner (3) in Race 5 shows a full, active barn entering the final stretch of the Assiniboia meet.

Michael L Pierce runs two horses in Race 7 — Smokeintheair (3) and Money Mitch (1) — in addition to Onmyradar (8) in Race 6. Pierce is a significant presence in the Assiniboia standings, and his two-pronged attack in the allowance feature is calculated. Smokeintheair (3) at the shorter price is the preferred Pierce runner in Race 7.

Jason Homer runs horses in Race 4 (Falsely Accused (3)), Race 6 (Sea Gold Go (3) and Oh So Bouncy (4)), and Race 7 (Acquire (5) and He's My Uncle (8)). Homer's three-race presence with multiple entries in two of those races indicates a full barn in good form. He's My Uncle (8) in Race 7 is Homer's best win prospect of the day.

Steven Gaskin enters three horses today: Our Last Penny (3) in Race 1, Dreaming Of Kona (2) and Diamond Rim (6) in Race 4. Two entries in the optional claimer is a strong win signal, and Diamond Rim (6) appears to be the barn's preferred runner given the Whitehall booking.

Jared Brown also has multiple entries, including Little Eddie (2) in Race 2, Kauai Dan (4) in Race 4, Special Gift (2) and Areunotentertained (7) in Race 6. His two entries in Race 6 make the maiden race more interesting, with Areunotentertained (7) clearly the stable's preferred runner at 1-1.

Jerry Gourneau is busy throughout the card with Ghost Cowboy (6) in Race 3, Chief Brady (5) in Race 4, Hay Scooby Doo (5) in Race 5, Flynnstone (1) in Race 6, and Red Dirt Alley (4) in Race 7. Gourneau's highest-percentage runner today is Hay Scooby Doo (5) in Race 5 given the Stephenson booking.

Ryan Desjarlais runs two horses in Race 2 — Little Eddie (2) and Amma Jaw Dropper (6) — and the Knights booking on Amma Jaw Dropper (6) is the better win prospect of the two.

Tom Gardipy Jr also enters two horses in Race 3 — Beckett's Best (1) and Delvecchio (3) — as well as Tiz Romantic (6) in Race 5, giving the trainer three horses on the card.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The most important wagering principle on this card is avoiding the win pool on the multiple 0-1 and 1-1 morning-line favorites. With Rise Again (2) in Race 1, Sgt. Filkow (1) in Race 2, Bossy Holiday (2) in Race 3, and Taillights (1) in Race 4 all listed at near-zero or even money, the win pools in these races will offer almost no value. The smart approach is to use these horses as singles or keys in exotic wagers and extract value from the secondary and longshot positions.

The single best win bet on the card is Diamond Rim (6) in Race 4 at 3-1. The Gaskin barn runs two horses in this optional claimer, Whitehall has the mount, and the outside post is not prohibitive in a six-horse field. A straight win bet on Diamond Rim (6) at morning-line odds of 3-1 represents the best risk-reward ratio on the card.

The best value play is Bling Bling Bling (7) in Race 5 at 3-1 with Knights aboard. The outside post concern is real, but Knights is the best rider at the meet and Pruitt has placed this horse in a spot to win. A win bet at 3-1 is attractive given the field dynamics.

For the Pick 4 spanning Races 4 through 7, structure the ticket as follows: use Diamond Rim (6) and Taillights (1) in Race 4, use Bling Bling Bling (7) and Hay Scooby Doo (5) in Race 5, use Areunotentertained (7) and I Conduit (5) in Race 6, and use Smokeintheair (3) and Money Mitch (1) in Race 7. This four-race sequence with two horses in each leg creates 16 combinations and covers the most likely outcomes in each race. A base unit of $0.50 per combination runs $8.00 and could return a substantial payout given the multi-leg structure.

For the Daily Double in Race 6 and Race 7, pair Areunotentertained (7) over Smokeintheair (3) as the primary ticket, with backups using I Conduit (5) over Money Mitch (1) and I Conduit (5) over Smokeintheair (3).

The trifecta in Race 5 is the highest-upside exotic play of the card. With seven horses in a short sprint at the $5,500 claiming level, a legitimate 6-1 or 7-1 horse landing in the third position behind two short-priced favorites can produce a meaningful payout. Key ticket: Bling Bling Bling (7) and Hay Scooby Doo (5) over each other over Rockets Red Flair (4), Red Road Runner (3), Tiz Romantic (6), and Fleet Of Hoof (1). At a base of $0.50, this creates an eight-combination ticket for $4.00 and covers the most probable outcome range.

For horseplayers looking to close the card strong, the Race 7 allowance trifecta offers genuine value. The Pierce stable's two-horse entry and Homer's two-horse entry create a scenario where the top three finishers could easily come from these two barns. Key ticket: Smokeintheair (3) and Money Mitch (1) in the first two positions over He's My Uncle (8) and Acquire (5) in third. Four combinations at $1.00 is a $4.00 investment with potential for a meaningful return.

Good luck at Assiniboia Downs on August 24, 2026.
