Churchill Downs Derby Day — Saturday, May 2, 2026 — Race Day Overview

The 152nd Kentucky Derby is the centerpiece of a fourteen-race card at Churchill Downs that represents one of the great single-day programs in American racing. The $5 million Run for the Roses goes as Race 12, with a scheduled post time of 6:57 PM ET, but bettors will find serious money available across the entire card, beginning with a maiden special weight opener at 11:00 AM and concluding with a late maiden closer after the Derby dust has settled.

The supporting cast is exceptional. Four Grade 1 races appear on the program — the Duchess of Coolmore Turf Sprint (Race 4), the American Turf (Race 9), the Churchill Downs Stakes (Race 10), and the Turf Classic (Race 11). Two Grade 2 events fill the mid-card: the Turf Sprint (Race 5) and the Derby Day Mile (Race 8). The Knicks Going Listed stakes anchors Race 6. Total purse distribution for the day exceeds $13 million.

Per reporting from TDN, Further Ado (POST 18) tops the morning line for the Kentucky Derby and will carry Spendthrift Farm's orange-and-purple silks. The colt by Gun Runner trained by Brad Cox enters off a strong prep campaign and is reported to be the horse to beat according to connections and early handicapping consensus. Ocelli (POST 22) drew significant attention this week when Tyler Gaffalione, who lost his original book, was named back aboard the longshot trained by D. Whitworth Beckman — a last-minute story with genuine wagering implications given Gaffalione's Derby Day book.

Friday's undercard at Churchill produced several key results worth noting heading into Saturday. Corporate Power took the Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes, On Time Girl captured the Grade 2 Eight Belles, and Kathynmarissa was dazzling in the Churchill Downs Modesty Stakes on the turf. The track itself has been in active use throughout the week under traditional Churchill spring conditions.

Weather Forecast and Track Conditions

Churchill Downs is reporting a partly cloudy to overcast Saturday with temperatures in the low-to-mid 60s at post time for the Derby. Conditions have been variable in Louisville through the week, with some moisture early in the week giving way to drier conditions into the weekend. The main track is expected to be listed as fast to good, with some residual softness in the deeper cushion from earlier in the week. The turf course — which hosts four races on this card — is anticipated to be firm to good, consistent with the conditions Kathynmarissa ran on during Friday's Modesty Stakes.

Track maintenance crews have been active with the Churchill oval throughout Derby Week, and the surface is reported to be in excellent shape for the marquee events. Any morning showers Saturday could push the main track toward good and bring turf ground toward soft, which would have significant implications for Race 7 (the Distaff Turf Mile), Race 9 (the American Turf), and Race 11 (the Turf Classic). Bettors should monitor late scratch activity and any official track variant announcements in the hour leading up to first post.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Churchill Downs in its spring configuration historically presents a surface that rewards early position on the main track, particularly over sprint distances. The one-turn sprint configuration at 7.5 furlongs (1540f) in Races 4 and 10 puts a premium on clean early breaks and the ability to secure good position through the first turn. Speed horses with inside-to-mid draw tend to benefit most at that trip.

At a mile and a quarter (2200f), the Kentucky Derby distance, post position history at Churchill is nuanced. Inside posts through the rail draw have historically produced mixed results — posts 1 through 5 have historically yielded fewer winners than mid-pack draws of 6 through 15. In a field of 24, the wide outside draws (posts 19 through 24) face significant disadvantages due to the difficult first-turn run and the sheer traffic expected in the largest field in the race. Mid-draw positions in the 8-to-15 range provide the most tactical flexibility.

On the turf course, the Churchill Downs lawn has historically been fair to all posts in sprint distances. In the 1.5-mile Turf Classic distance (Race 11, 1980f), early position is less critical, and closers with European-style tactical speed tend to fare well. The one-mile turf route (Race 7, 1760f) over the inner course favors horses that can rate kindly and make one sustained run in the stretch.

The inside post in maiden routes on the main track (Race 1, Race 14) at Churchill often sets up favorably for speed types in the early going, and the one-turn mile configuration at 1870f rewards horses that break well from gates 1 through 6.

RACE 1 — Post 11:00 AM ET — 1870f | Dirt | Maiden Special Weight | Purse $120,000

Pace Analysis

This is a one-turn mile and three-sixteenths maiden race for 3-year-olds on the main track. With eleven horses, the pace picture is somewhat murky. Powershift (POST 11) figures prominently as a Todd Pletcher/Irad Ortiz Jr. coupling with strong works, and Winston Ave (POST 9) from the Bob Baffert/Juan Hernandez barn is expected to contest the early lead from the far outside. Bourbon Dream (POST 8) for trainer Faustio Gutierrez shows natural pace tendencies that could put him on or near the front. The fractions are likely to be moderately honest given the competitive nature of the Derby Day card — horses in this field will be fit and ready.

Key Contenders

Powershift (POST 11) draws the outside post but commands attention as the morning-line favorite at 3-1. The Todd Pletcher operation has a long history of sending debut or lightly-raced runners to the Churchill maiden events on the Derby Day undercard, and Irad Ortiz Jr. does not accept weak mounts on a day this important. Expect Powershift to be forwardly placed and make a sustained bid.

Winston Ave (POST 9) represents the Baffert barn's presence early in the card. Juan Hernandez has been active at Churchill throughout the meeting and knows the surface. At 4-1 morning line, Winston Ave projects as a strong pace presence that could carry his speed the full distance.

Secondary Choices

Silent Way (POST 3) for Peter Eurton trained on the West Coast but ships in with Flavien Prat in the saddle — a significant jockey upgrade that cannot be ignored. Prat is riding at an elite level in 2026 and his presence suggests connections believe this horse is ready to compete at Churchill's level. The 4-1 morning line reflects legitimate respect.

Cromwell (POST 6) for Cherie Devaux comes in at 6-1 with Jose Ortiz aboard. Devaux has been building a strong national book and Jose Ortiz is a legitimate rider who won't waste his time on the opener.

Longshots

Bourbon Dream (POST 8) at 5-1 sits just outside the secondary tier. The Gutierrez family barn entry — trained by Faustio and ridden by Mario — is a local outfit that can occasionally surprise in the Churchill opener. Get Them Roses (POST 5) has the Brendan Walsh/Gaffalione connection, which is noteworthy given Gaffalione's full-card commitment. Bhatia (POST 1) for Davis/Saez is another angle worth noting at 15-1 as a deep-inside post speed horse. Stakeholder (POST 2) for Ian Wilkes at 20-1, Ingleborough (POST 4) for Dale Romans at 20-1, Time To Strike (POST 7) for Mark Casse/Velazquez at 20-1, and Midnight Playboy (POST 10) for Riley Mott at 15-1 complete the field and range from deep longshots to fringe contenders.

Betting Strategy

This race sets up as a structurally sound maiden opener where the Pletcher/Ortiz Jr. combination deserves first call. Powershift (POST 11) is the logical single in early pick sequences. The race-within-a-race between Powershift (POST 11) and Winston Ave (POST 9) is worth watching for pace purposes. An exacta box of Powershift (POST 11), Winston Ave (POST 9), and Silent Way (POST 3) offers solid coverage at reasonable cost.

Selections

Win: Powershift (POST 11) Place: Winston Ave (POST 9) Show: Silent Way (POST 3)

RACE 2 — Post 11:32 AM ET — 1870f | Dirt | Optional Claiming $125,000 NW1X | Purse $127,000

Pace Analysis

A full field of twelve goes in this optional claiming route for horses that have not won two races. Taptastic (POST 8), trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., draws the 3-1 morning line favorite slot and should be prominent early. Memory (POST 4) for Bob Baffert draws post 4 with Flavien Prat and should also be near the pace. Out Of The Woods (POST 1) with Velazquez from the rail could make things interesting early. The presence of multiple potential pace horses means the fractions will be earnest, which could set up for a closer.

Key Contenders

Taptastic (POST 8) commands the most respect based on trainer/jockey combination and morning line. Asmussen and Ortiz Jr. form one of the most lethal partnerships in American racing, and the 3-1 morning line reflects a horse that should be fit and ready. The 8 post in a one-turn route at Churchill is workable.

Memory (POST 4) gives the Baffert barn its second representative in the first two races. Prat in the saddle on a horse drawing post 4 in a one-turn mile points toward a horse that is expected to be tactically positioned. The 4-1 morning line is reasonable.

Secondary Choices

Out Of The Woods (POST 1) for Philip D'Amato ships in with Velazquez. D'Amato horses traveling from the West Coast on Derby Day typically arrive ready to run, and the rail draw at this distance is workable. The 6-1 morning line represents fair value.

Our Moneyman (POST 9) for Bret Calhoun at 6-1 is a local presence that deserves respect. Calhoun conditions horses on the Churchill oval regularly and understands the surface. Lincoln's Law (POST 11) for Philip Bauer with Gaffalione at 10-1 is another angle — Gaffalione's presence on a card of this magnitude means his mounts outside the Derby itself should be monitored for sharp action.

Longshots

Sovereign Law (POST 2) for Brad Cox at 8-1 is hard to dismiss given Cox's Day strength. Make My Day (POST 6) for Pletcher/Saez at 8-1 adds another elite barn. Very Connected (POST 7) for McPeek at 12-1 gives the local trainer another shot. J J Grey (POST 10) and Spirit Of Royal (POST 12) both represent long-shot profiles, as does Steel (POST 3) for William Mott at 20-1 and Seal Bay (POST 5) at 30-1 as essentially a throw-out price.

Betting Strategy

Taptastic (POST 8) figures as the correct single, but Memory (POST 4) at 4-1 is the play if you want the Baffert/Prat bounce. A double with Powershift (POST 11) in Race 1 into Taptastic (POST 8) in Race 2 is an early sequence building block.

Selections

Win: Taptastic (POST 8) Place: Memory (POST 4) Show: Out Of The Woods (POST 1)

RACE 3 — Post 12:05 PM ET — 1760f | Dirt | Optional Claiming $80,000 NW2X | Purse $134,000

Pace Analysis

A full field of fourteen in this one-mile optional claimer produces a complex pace scenario. Who Dey (POST 6) draws the morning-line co-favorite position at 4-1 and is expected to be forwardly positioned. Praetor (POST 12) for Chad Brown/Prat at 3-1 is the favorite from a wide post and figures to close. John Hancock (POST 5) for Brad Cox/Irad Ortiz Jr. at 6-1 adds another top barn to the front of the pace picture. Vibe (POST 10) for Pletcher/Saez at 6-1 could stalk the pace from mid-pack.

Key Contenders

Praetor (POST 12) is the morning-line favorite at 3-1 and Chad Brown's horse draws a workable post given the one-turn configuration. Brown trains an exceptional string of dirt and turf horses, and Prat is Brown's primary pilot when he makes the trip. This combination deserves top billing.

Who Dey (POST 6) at 4-1 from the Thomas Drury barn with BJ Hernandez Jr. draws a clean mid-field post. The 4-1 morning line is not overly generous for a horse positioned inside Praetor.

Secondary Choices

John Hancock (POST 5) gets Irad Ortiz Jr. from the Brad Cox barn — the same barn that will saddle Further Ado (POST 18) in the Derby. Cox's team is focused but deep, and a horse with Ortiz Jr. in the irons at 6-1 in a secondary stakes race on Derby Day warrants respect.

Vibe (POST 10) for Todd Pletcher at 6-1 fits the profile of a Pletcher horse that was pointed to this exact spot. The 10 post in a one-turn mile is manageable, and Saez is capable of making up ground.

Keewaydin (POST 9) for Bill Walden at 8-1 is a live local threat. Bullard (POST 14) for Michael McCarthy/Velazquez at 12-1 gives the California-based McCarthy another shot at the Churchill surface.

Longshots

Comport (POST 4) for Eddie Kenneally/Jose Ortiz at 15-1 has a legitimate jockey. Vamos Carlitos (POST 2) for Greg Foley/Gaffalione at 15-1 has the Gaffalione angle again. Arro Smash (POST 1), Special Caliber (POST 3), Mitochondria (POST 7), Racing Driver (POST 8), Aleman (POST 11), and Attache (POST 13) all project as fringe-to-deep longshots in a field this competitive.

Betting Strategy

Praetor (POST 12) is the bet, with a wide exacta using John Hancock (POST 5) and Who Dey (POST 6) in the underneath spots. This race opens the Pick 3 into the Grade 1 Duchess of Coolmore.

Selections

Win: Praetor (POST 12) Place: John Hancock (POST 5) Show: Who Dey (POST 6)

RACE 4 — Post 12:38 PM ET — 1540f | Dirt | Grade 1 Duchess of Coolmore Turf Sprint | Purse $1,000,000

Pace Analysis

This six-runner Grade 1 at seven and a half furlongs on the main track figures to be a fast-pace affair. Haulin Ice (POST 2) for Saffie Joseph Jr. and Splendora (POST 5) for Bob Baffert with Prat are both likely to contest the early lead. Usha (POST 1) from the rail under the Baffert/Hernandez combination may also be prominent. With multiple pace horses, this race sets up well for Ways And Means (POST 4) to close into a pace duel.

Key Contenders

Ways And Means (POST 4) from the Chad Brown/Jose Ortiz combination draws the morning-line co-favorite at 2-1. Brown's horses in the Grade 1 sprint category at Churchill have a strong record, and the tactical versatility that Ortiz Jose brings from post 4 is ideal. This is the horse to beat.

Splendora (POST 5) at 2-1 provides the Baffert barn with a strong entry. Prat riding for Baffert is always a significant combination, and the 5 post in a straight sprint sets up cleanly. The morning line tie suggests genuine uncertainty between these two.

Secondary Choices

Haulin Ice (POST 2) for Saffie Joseph Jr. at 4-1 is a legitimate front-end horse that could control the pace from post 2. Joseph has been one of the hottest trainers in American racing and Arrieta has a solid Churchill record.

Usha (POST 1) at 4-1 from the Baffert/Hernandez combination on the rail gives Baffert two horses in this six-runner field. The rail draw in a sprint is a natural early-speed position.

R Disaster (POST 6) at 6-1 for the Joseph barn completes the full Saffie Joseph double entry with Haulin Ice. Gaffalione's presence on this horse is a significant positive — the rail-to-stretch run at Churchill's 7.5-furlong configuration puts the 6 post in a clean position.

Longshots

Autumn Evening (POST 3) for D'Angelo/Ortiz Irad Jr. at 20-1 draws post 3 and could be a significant underlay if the track plays to closers, but the morning line reflects a genuine outsider in a field of accomplished graded stakes competitors.

Betting Strategy

This is a race where both morning-line favorites deserve serious consideration. Ways And Means (POST 4) is the single for exacta purposes, with Splendora (POST 5) used prominently underneath. The 4-1 shot Haulin Ice (POST 2) and R Disaster (POST 6) round out exotic coverage. A straight exacta of Ways And Means (POST 4) over Splendora (POST 5) is the primary play.

Selections

Win: Ways And Means (POST 4) Place: Splendora (POST 5) Show: Haulin Ice (POST 2)

RACE 5 — Post 1:12 PM ET — 1210f | Turf | Grade 2 Turf Sprint | Purse $600,000

Pace Analysis

Six furlongs on the Churchill turf with ten runners sets up as a competitive pace affair. My Boy Prince (POST 3) for Mark Casse at 2-1 is the morning-line favorite and should be near the pace. Yellow Card (POST 7) for Michael McCarthy/Prat at 4-1 and Litigation (POST 9) for Brian Lynch/Irad Ortiz Jr. at 3-1 create a well-matched trio at the top of the market. Joe Shiesty (POST 10) from post 10 in a turf sprint typically draws a wide and difficult position, but the Foster/De La Cruz combination is respected.

Key Contenders

My Boy Prince (POST 3) at 2-1 is the public choice and for good reason — the Mark Casse barn conditions excellent turf horses and Jose Ortiz in the irons from post 3 on the Churchill lawn is an ideal setup. This horse should be tracked closely in warm-up circles.

Litigation (POST 9) at 3-1 for Brian Lynch and Irad Ortiz Jr. presents the most interesting fade angle in this race. Lynch-trained turf sprinters at Churchill are reliably consistent, and Ortiz Jr. riding a turf horse from a wide post knows how to angle toward the rail early.

Secondary Choices

Yellow Card (POST 7) at 4-1 for Michael McCarthy/Prat is a legitimate alternative. McCarthy has been a major player in national turf racing, and Prat is an elite turf pilot. The 7 post in a turf sprint is workable.

Mondogetsbuckets (POST 8) for Chris Block/Gaffalione at 8-1 is an interesting play given the pace setup — Block occasionally sends underrated turf horses and Gaffalione is live on every mount today.

Joe Shiesty (POST 10) for Eric Foster at 6-1 closes out the mid-range with a wide post that may require a wide trip.

Longshots

Possiblemente (POST 5) for Joe Sharp/Franco at 10-1 and Its Bourbon Thirty (POST 6) for O'Dwyer/Machado at 15-1 give this race local flavor. Wendelssohn (POST 1) for Hartman/BJ Hernandez at 15-1 draws the rail in a turf sprint, which is a genuine advantage on the Churchill lawn if the horse has gate speed. Bear River (POST 2) and Full Disclosure (POST 4) at 30-1 are effectively throw-out prices.

Betting Strategy

My Boy Prince (POST 3) and Litigation (POST 9) are a logical exacta backbone. The turf sprint is a race where the value player looks to Yellow Card (POST 7) at 4-1 as a strong each-way play. In trifecta construction, use My Boy Prince (POST 3), Litigation (POST 9), and Yellow Card (POST 7) as the primary three with Mondogetsbuckets (POST 8) as a fourth option.

Selections

Win: My Boy Prince (POST 3) Place: Litigation (POST 9) Show: Yellow Card (POST 7)

RACE 6 — Post 1:53 PM ET — 1760f | Dirt | Listed Knicks Going Stakes | Purse $200,000

Pace Analysis

One mile on the dirt for this listed stakes draws eleven runners. Dragoon Guard (POST 2) for Brad Cox at 3-1 and Tour Player (POST 6) for Beckman/Prat at 4-1 figure to be the main pace setters. Be You (POST 4) for Pletcher/Velazquez at 4-1 projects as a stalker. Capital Idea (POST 10) for William Mott/Alvarado at 5-1 shapes up as a late closer if the pace is honest.

Key Contenders

Dragoon Guard (POST 2) at 3-1 for Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz Jr. from post 2 on the main track is the horse to beat. Cox's ability to put horses on the board in mid-card stakes races at Churchill is well-documented, and Ortiz Jr. will have this horse in the best possible tactical position from a clean inside draw.

Tour Player (POST 6) at 4-1 for the Beckman/Prat connection is the main danger. Prat in stakes races at Churchill on Derby Day is a highly profitable angle, and the 6 post allows for clean early position in a one-turn mile.

Secondary Choices

Be You (POST 4) at 4-1 for Todd Pletcher and Velazquez is a legitimate co-secondary. Pletcher targeting this listed stake with Velazquez suggests a horse that has been pointed to this exact opportunity.

Capital Idea (POST 10) at 5-1 for William Mott gives Alvarado a chance in a race where the Mott barn's horses often find the board at generous prices at Churchill.

Moonlight (POST 11) at 8-1 for Chris Block/Jose Ortiz and Will Take It (POST 7) for Dallas Stewart/BJ Hernandez at 8-1 round out the secondary tier.

Longshots

Scotland (POST 9) for William Mott at 20-1 — the second Mott runner — and Bernin Hot (POST 8) at 30-1 are well below market. Brotha Keny (POST 1), Banjo Chris (POST 3), and Prince Of Power (POST 5) are deep longshots with little credentials for this level.

Betting Strategy

Dragoon Guard (POST 2) is the single here. The exacta using Tour Player (POST 6) and Be You (POST 4) in the underneath positions offers reasonable returns. The 5-1 price on Capital Idea (POST 10) makes it an attractive each-way play in a trifecta.

Selections

Win: Dragoon Guard (POST 2) Place: Tour Player (POST 6) Show: Be You (POST 4)

RACE 7 — Post 2:38 PM ET — 1760f | Turf | Grade 2 Distaff Turf Mile | Purse $1,000,000

Pace Analysis

One mile on the Churchill turf for fillies and mares in the Grade 2 Distaff Turf Mile. Sweet Rebecca (POST 2) for Brendan Walsh at 2-1 morning line is the clear public choice and Gaffalione is the pilot. Portfolio Duration (POST 3) for Chad Brown/Prat at 4-1 is the main tactical rival. Pin Up Betty (POST 8) for Michael Maker/Juan Hernandez at 4-1 provides depth. This race figures to be run at a moderate pace with Sweet Rebecca likely on or near the lead and the closers stalking.

Key Contenders

Sweet Rebecca (POST 2) at 2-1 is the morning-line favorite and, with Gaffalione in full command of his Derby Day book, this is one of his most straightforward assignments. Walsh has been one of the better trainers for turf mares at Churchill and post 2 on the inner turf mile is a premium draw.

Portfolio Duration (POST 3) at 4-1 for Chad Brown and Prat is the legitimate threat. Brown's turf mares at Churchill in Grade 2 company represent one of the most statistically reliable patterns in North American racing. Prat from post 3 in a turf mile is extremely well-positioned.

Secondary Choices

Pin Up Betty (POST 8) at 4-1 for Michael Maker ties as a secondary alongside Portfolio Duration. Maker has a deep string at Churchill and Juan Hernandez has been riding with confidence.

Maggie Go (POST 9) at 8-1 for the second Chad Brown/Ortiz Jr. entry gives the Brown barn a double in this race, which adds tactical flexibility and suggests both horses are well-prepared.

Temptable (POST 4) for William Mott/Alvarado at 8-1 ties with Maggie Go on the secondary tier. Mott rarely misses on a Day card of this magnitude.

Longshots

Classic Q (POST 5) for Mark Casse/Velazquez at 6-1 is the most attractive of the secondary longshots. Italian Soiree (POST 1) for H. Graham Motion/Franco at 10-1 has the rail draw — always a factor in a turf mile. Movin On Up (POST 7) for Saffie Joseph/Jose Ortiz at 12-1 and Vina Arana (POST 6) for Jack Sisterson/Beschizza at 20-1 complete the field.

Betting Strategy

Sweet Rebecca (POST 2) and Portfolio Duration (POST 3) are the primary exacta plays. The Chad Brown double of Portfolio Duration (POST 3) and Maggie Go (POST 9) in the underneath of an exacta with Sweet Rebecca (POST 2) is a structurally sound wager. Classic Q (POST 5) at 6-1 is the best value in the race.

Selections

Win: Sweet Rebecca (POST 2) Place: Portfolio Duration (POST 3) Show: Pin Up Betty (POST 8)

RACE 8 — Post 3:23 PM ET — 1760f | Dirt | Grade 2 Derby Day Mile | Purse $750,000

Pace Analysis

One mile on the main track for the Grade 2 Derby Day Mile. Crude Velocity (POST 6) for Bob Baffert at 2-1 and Englishman (POST 1) for Cherie Devaux/Jose Ortiz at 3-1 draw the top two spots in the morning line. Trouble Calling (POST 2) for Greg Foley/Saez at 5-1 could make early pace from post 2. Crown The Buckeye (POST 7) for Michael Maker/Prat at 6-1 is the most logical closer in the field.

Key Contenders

Crude Velocity (POST 6) at 2-1 for Bob Baffert and Florent Geroux draws the morning-line favorite position. Baffert has a strong record in the Grade 2 Derby Day Mile, and Geroux is a proven pilot at Churchill in stakes company. The 6 post allows for a wide trip but avoids early congestion at the rail.

Englishman (POST 1) at 3-1 for Cherie Devaux and Jose Ortiz draws the rail, which at one mile on the main track at Churchill can be either an advantage or a trap depending on early traffic. Devaux and Jose Ortiz form a productive partnership and Englishman is a legitimate favorite-level runner.

Secondary Choices

Crown The Buckeye (POST 7) at 6-1 for Michael Maker and Prat is the play if the pace collapses. Prat closing on a Maker horse in a Grade 2 mile at Churchill is a winning formula when the fractions are honest.

Trouble Calling (POST 2) at 5-1 for Greg Foley/Saez from post 2 could take up a comfortable stalking position and make a sustained bid.

Creole Chrome (POST 8) at 8-1 for Joe Sharp/Irad Ortiz Jr. is the most intriguing value play in the race. Sharp-trained horses at Churchill tend to be underestimated, and Ortiz Jr. will find the best possible trip from post 8.

Longshots

Secured Freedom (POST 4) for Tim Yakteen/Velazquez at 20-1 gives the Yakteen barn a Derby Day presence. Stop The Car (POST 5) for Walsh/Gaffalione at 20-1 has the Gaffalione angle but draws a tough assignment. Work (POST 3) for Doug O'Neill at 50-1, Great White (POST 10) for John Ennis at 12-1, One More Freud (POST 11) for Hess/Hernandez at 15-1, Lockstocknpharoah (POST 9) at 20-1, and Baytown Dreamer (POST 12) at 50-1 complete the field as fringe-to-deep longshots.

Betting Strategy

Crude Velocity (POST 6) is a reasonable single but the 2-1 price limits upside. Crown The Buckeye (POST 7) at 6-1 paired with Crude Velocity (POST 6) in exacta construction is the better play. An exacta box of Englishman (POST 1), Crude Velocity (POST 6), and Crown The Buckeye (POST 7) covers the three most likely outcomes. Creole Chrome (POST 8) is the best value play in the race at 8-1.

Selections

Win: Crude Velocity (POST 6) Place: Crown The Buckeye (POST 7) Show: Englishman (POST 1)

RACE 9 — Post 4:06 PM ET — 1870f | Turf | Grade 1 American Turf Stakes | Purse $1,000,000

Pace Analysis

One mile and three-sixteenths on the turf in the Grade 1 American Turf for 3-year-olds. Stark Contrast (POST 4) for Michael McCarthy/Prat at 4-1 ties with Remember Mamba (POST 12) for Cherie Devaux/Jose Ortiz at 4-1 as morning-line co-favorites. Blackout Time (POST 5) for McPeek/Saez at 10-1 and Final Score (POST 14) for Pletcher/Ortiz Jr. at 8-1 project as pace presences. Greenwich Village (POST 8) for Baffert/Hernandez at 6-1 provides mid-pack depth.

Key Contenders

Stark Contrast (POST 4) at 4-1 for Michael McCarthy and Prat is the most attractive play in the race. McCarthy's turf horses are exceptionally well-prepared for Grade 1 events, and Prat from post 4 in an American Turf mile-and-three-sixteenths setup is textbook positioning.

Remember Mamba (POST 12) at 4-1 ties as the co-favorite and Cherie Devaux has the hot hand nationally. Jose Ortiz aboard brings tactical sophistication from a wide draw, which in a turf route of this distance is manageable if the fractions are moderate.

Secondary Choices

Greenwich Village (POST 8) at 6-1 for Baffert/Hernandez gives the Baffert barn its presence in a Grade 1 on the Derby Day undercard. Baffert's 3-year-old turf horses at Churchill have a respectable record.

Final Score (POST 14) at 8-1 for Todd Pletcher/Ortiz Jr. draws the furthest outside post in the field but Pletcher's ability to prepare horses for the American Turf is exceptional. From post 14, the horse will need early position or a wide sweeping trip.

Alpyland (POST 7) at 8-1 for Mark Casse/Castellano is another elite-barn entry that deserves respect.

Longshots

Honey Dutch (POST 9) at 12-1 for Beckman/Gaffalione — Gaffalione is live on every mount today. Thousandsticks (POST 13) at 15-1 for Brian Lynch/Rosario gives Lynch another Grade 1 runner. Vasy (POST 10) for Walsh/Velazquez at 10-1 rounds out the second tier. Blackout Time (POST 5) for McPeek at 10-1, Street Beast (POST 1) at 15-1, Let's Be Frank (POST 2) and Blinging It Back (POST 3) at 30-1, Black Hornet (POST 6) at 20-1, Steel Imperium (POST 11) at 30-1, and the remaining deep longshots complete the full 14-horse field.

Betting Strategy

Stark Contrast (POST 4) is the single. The exacta with Remember Mamba (POST 12) underneath is the primary play. An American Turf trifecta using Stark Contrast (POST 4), Remember Mamba (POST 12), and Greenwich Village (POST 8) or Final Score (POST 14) is the most cost-effective approach. This race is also a critical leg in the late Pick 5 structure leading into the Derby.

Selections

Win: Stark Contrast (POST 4) Place: Remember Mamba (POST 12) Show: Greenwich Village (POST 8)

RACE 10 — Post 4:50 PM ET — 1540f | Dirt | Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes | Purse $1,000,000

Pace Analysis

Seven and a half furlongs on the main track for the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes. Knightsbridge (POST 6) for William Mott/Alvarado at 2-1 is the morning-line favorite and projects as a front-running or stalking type. Cornucopian (POST 2) for Baffert/Hernandez at 4-1 could challenge for the lead. Imagination (POST 7) for Baffert/Prat at 6-1 draws a clean outside post. Disco Time (POST 1) for Brad Cox/Velazquez at 6-1 from the rail figures to be in the early mix.

Key Contenders

Knightsbridge (POST 6) at 2-1 for William Mott and Junior Alvarado is the horse to beat. Mott's Grade 1 record at Churchill is exceptional, and this is a horse that has been prepared specifically for this spot. From post 6 at seven and a half furlongs, the position is clean and straightforward.

Cornucopian (POST 2) at 4-1 for Baffert/Hernandez is the most dangerous threat. The Baffert barn's presence in the Churchill Downs Stakes with multiple horses historically has been a dangerous pattern, and post 2 sets up for a comfortable early position.

Secondary Choices

Imagination (POST 7) at 6-1 for Baffert and Prat draws a comfortable outside post. With Prat aboard, this horse can be ridden to the situation and represents exceptional value if Knightsbridge draws away pace pressure.

Disco Time (POST 1) at 6-1 for Brad Cox/Velazquez from the rail is a natural front-runner in the Churchill Downs Stakes. Cox and Velazquez have won this race before and the rail draw in a straight sprint is pure early-speed territory.

Disruptor (POST 5) at 8-1 for Pletcher/Ortiz Jr. adds the fourth elite-barn presence to this Grade 1.

Longshots

Banishing (POST 10) at 12-1 for Jacobson/Gaffalione — the Gaffalione value angle again. Hall Of Fame (POST 4) at 20-1 for Asmussen/Jose Ortiz, Crazy Mason (POST 9) at 15-1 for Sacco/Franco, Point Dume (POST 11) at 15-1, T O Elvis (POST 8) at 30-1 for the Japanese invader Takayanagi/Sakai, and Macho Music (POST 3) at 30-1 complete the field.

Betting Strategy

Knightsbridge (POST 6) is the best single on the Derby Day undercard. At 2-1, the price limits return, but the race sets up cleanly for the Mott horse. Exacta plays using Cornucopian (POST 2) and Imagination (POST 7) in second make structural sense. The Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes is a critical leg in the late Pick 3 sequence leading into the Turf Classic.

Selections

Win: Knightsbridge (POST 6) Place: Cornucopian (POST 2) Show: Imagination (POST 7)

RACE 11 — Post 5:39 PM ET — 1980f | Turf | Grade 1 Turf Classic Stakes | Purse $1,500,000

Pace Analysis

One mile and a quarter on the Churchill turf in the Grade 1 Turf Classic. Rhetorical (POST 6) for Bill Walden/Irad Ortiz Jr. at 2-1 is the morning-line favorite. Program Trading (POST 4) for Chad Brown/Gaffalione at 4-1 and Test Score (POST 9) for H. Graham Motion/Franco at 4-1 share secondary favorite billing. Asbury Park (POST 3) for Chad Brown/Prat at 8-1 gives Brown a dual entry. Make Me King (POST 10) for the international barn Al Jehani/Jose Ortiz at 6-1 adds depth.

Key Contenders

Rhetorical (POST 6) at 2-1 for Bill Walden and Irad Ortiz Jr. draws the morning-line favorite in one of the most prestigious races on the card. Walden is one of the most underrated trainers in American racing when it comes to older turf horses at Churchill, and Ortiz Jr. in a Grade 1 at Churchill's mile-and-a-quarter turf trip is a proven combination.

Program Trading (POST 4) at 4-1 for Chad Brown and Gaffalione is the principal danger. Brown's Turf Classic record is outstanding, and Gaffalione is an intelligent jockey in longer turf routes. From post 4, the horse has every tactical option available.

Secondary Choices

Test Score (POST 9) at 4-1 for H. Graham Motion/Franco ties with Program Trading. Motion is arguably the premier trainer in North America for turf routes at a mile and a quarter, and the post 9 draw, while wide, is manageable over the long Churchill turf course.

Make Me King (POST 10) at 6-1 from the Al Jehani connection with Jose Ortiz is an intriguing international presence. Jose Ortiz understands the Churchill turf course intimately.

Gold Phoenix (POST 7) at 10-1 for Philip D'Amato/Berrios Hector Isaac is a late-value angle — D'Amato ships turf horses cross-country with success.

Longshots

Asbury Park (POST 3) for the second Chad Brown entry with Prat at 8-1 means Brown has tactical flexibility throughout this race. Corruption (POST 1) for Mark Casse/Velazquez at 15-1 from the rail is a sleeper. Mercante (POST 5) at 12-1 for Knippenberg/Ramos, Astronomer (POST 8) at 30-1 for Simon Callaghan/Castellano, and Dashman (POST 2) for Lynch/Rosario at 20-1 round out the field.

Betting Strategy

Rhetorical (POST 6) and Program Trading (POST 4) are the backbone of all exotic plays. The 2-1 price on Rhetorical (POST 6) makes it an acceptable win bet, but the value lies in the exacta with Test Score (POST 9) underneath. A trifecta using these three with Make Me King (POST 10) filling the third is the recommended play.

Selections

Win: Rhetorical (POST 6) Place: Program Trading (POST 4) Show: Test Score (POST 9)

RACE 12 — Post 6:57 PM ET — 2200f | Dirt | Grade 1 Kentucky Derby — 152nd Running | Purse $5,000,000

Pace Analysis

The 2200-furlong mile-and-a-quarter Kentucky Derby in a field of 24 creates one of the most complex pace scenarios in American racing. Further Ado (POST 18) for Brad Cox/Velazquez enters as the reported TDN morning-line standout and is expected to be a late-running closer from a mid-to-outside draw. Commandment (POST 6) for Cox/Saez gives Cox a two-pronged attack, and the 6 post is significantly more favorable for tactical early positioning. Renegade (POST 1) for Pletcher/Ortiz Jr. draws the rail — a historically tricky position in a 24-horse field but one that can work for a front-running or stalking type if the horse breaks clean. The Puma (POST 9) for Delgado/Castellano at 10-1 figures to be a mid-pack presence.

The pace in a 24-horse Derby will typically be fast through the first half-mile as multiple horses jockey for position. Several speed-types from the outside posts — including Fulleffort (POST 20) for Cox/Gaffalione — will need to burn early energy to find position, which could set up perfectly for the classiest closers.

The pace picture broadly: Renegade (POST 1) from the rail, Commandment (POST 6), possibly Chief Wallabee (POST 12) from the William Mott barn and Incredibolt (POST 11) from the Riley Mott stable as stalkers, with Further Ado (POST 18) and Emerging Market (POST 15) from Chad Brown/Prat targeting the late stages.

Key Contenders

Further Ado (POST 18) at 6-1 for Brad Cox and John Velazquez is the buzz horse of Derby Week. Per TDN reporting, the Gun Runner colt enters off a strong prep series and carries the Spendthrift Farm silks that won the Derby previously. Cox and Velazquez form one of the most successful partnerships in the modern Derby era. Post 18 requires early energy to find position in a 24-horse field, but Further Ado reportedly has the tactical speed to overcome this challenge. The 6-1 morning line on a horse this well-regarded represents fair value.

Commandment (POST 6) at 6-1 for the same Cox barn and Luis Saez from post 6 is arguably the more advantaged of the Cox duo from a positional standpoint. Post 6 in a 24-horse field is clean, early position is achievable, and Saez has ridden brilliantly in recent Churchill meetings. If the Cox barn wins the Derby, Commandment (POST 6) might be the vehicle.

Renegade (POST 1) at 4-1 for Todd Pletcher and Irad Ortiz Jr. draws the rail and the morning-line favorite slot. Pletcher and Ortiz Jr. have won the Derby before and this horse's preparation — with the top connections on the card — makes the 4-1 price entirely reasonable. The rail draw in a 24-horse field requires a clean break and early luck, but Ortiz Jr. is the best in the business at navigating that scenario.

Secondary Choices

Chief Wallabee (POST 12) at 8-1 for William Mott and Alvarado is the most dangerous mid-card draw in the field. Post 12 in a Derby of 24 is genuinely competitive positioning, Mott runs excellent classic horses, and Alvarado has been riding with elite consistency in 2026. This is a horse that could win at a price.

The Puma (POST 9) at 10-1 for Delgado/Castellano draws a workable post and J.J. Castellano is a proven Derby-caliber jockey who always gives his horses a confident, well-timed ride.

Emerging Market (POST 15) at 15-1 for Chad Brown and Prat gives the Brown barn a third presence in the race with one of the world's best jockeys. A Chad Brown horse with Flavien Prat at 15-1 in any Grade 1 merits serious consideration.

So Happy (POST 8) at 15-1 for Mark Glatt/Mike Smith gives the legendary Mike Smith another late-career Derby opportunity. Smith's positional genius in large fields cannot be discounted, and the 8 post is advantageous.

Longshots

Silent Tactic (POST 13) for Mark Casse/Torres Cristian at 20-1 and Potente (POST 14) for Baffert/Hernandez at 20-1 give two elite barns mid-field draws. Danon Bourbon (POST 7) for the Japanese barn of Ikezoe/Nishimura at 20-1 represents the international angle — Japanese-trained horses in the Kentucky Derby have historically been better than their odds. Incredibolt (POST 11) for Riley Mott/Torres Jaime at 20-1, Corona De Oro (POST 24) for Stewart/BJ Hernandez at 50-1 from the nightmare draw, Right To Party (POST 5) for McPeek/Elliott at 30-1, Albus (POST 2) for Riley Mott/Franco at 30-1, Litmus Test (POST 4) for Baffert/Garcia at 50-1, Intrepido (POST 3) for Mullins/Berrios at 50-1, Wonder Dean (POST 10) for Takayanagi/Sakai at 30-1, Fulleffort (POST 20) for Cox/Gaffalione at 20-1, Pavlovian (POST 16) for O'Neill/Maldonado at 30-1, Six Speed (POST 17) for Seemar/BJ Hernandez at 50-1, Golden Tempo (POST 19) for Devaux/Jose Ortiz at 30-1, Robusta (POST 23) for O'Neill/Jaramillo at 50-1, Ocelli (POST 22) for Beckman/Ramos at 50-1 — despite the Tyler Gaffalione connection per pre-race reporting, note that per the official card Ramos is the assigned pilot — and Great White (POST 21) for Ennis/Achard at 50-1 are the primary longshots worth noting.

Ocelli (POST 22) deserves a special note given the jockey-change story that circulated heading into Derby Week. If Gaffalione ends up on this horse and is reflected in late changes, it elevates the horse's prospects considerably.

Betting Strategy

This is the Kentucky Derby. The most important single concept in Derby wagering is that the winner can come from almost anywhere in the draw, but the field size and post positions influence exotic structure significantly.

Win plays: Renegade (POST 1) at 4-1 is the morning-line call. Further Ado (POST 18) and Commandment (POST 6) for the Cox barn represent the primary threats. A win parlay of Renegade or Commandment is the core strategy.

Exacta: Renegade (POST 1) over Further Ado (POST 18), Chief Wallabee (POST 12), and Commandment (POST 6) in an exacta wheel offers the most cost-effective coverage.

Trifecta: Use Renegade (POST 1), Further Ado (POST 18), and Commandment (POST 6) as the primary three with Chief Wallabee (POST 12), The Puma (POST 9), and Emerging Market (POST 15) filling the third spot in a partial wheel.

Superfecta: Renegade/Further Ado/Commandment/Chief Wallabee is the base ticket. Adding So Happy (POST 8) and Emerging Market (POST 15) as fourth-place options adds cost but dramatically increases return potential on a $1 superfecta.

Selections

Win: Further Ado (POST 18) Place: Commandment (POST 6) Show: Renegade (POST 1)

RACE 13 — Post 8:00 PM ET — 1430f | Dirt | Optional Claiming $125,000 NW1X | Purse $127,000

Pace Analysis

Seven furlongs on the main track in a post-Derby optional claimer. Buetane (POST 10) for Baffert/Ortiz Jr. at 2-1 is the dominant morning-line choice and should control the pace or stalk from a clean outside draw. Noble Affair (POST 11) for Asmussen/Jose Ortiz at 4-1 from post 11 projects as a pace presser. Gilded Bandit (POST 8) for William Mott/Alvarado at 3-1 gives Mott another runner in a race where the barn has the second-best horse.

Key Contenders

Buetane (POST 10) at 2-1 for Baffert/Ortiz Jr. is a strong single post-Derby. The Baffert barn winning a race on Derby night is a common pattern, and Ortiz Jr. on the short favorite in a seven-furlong optional claimer is a straightforward assignment.

Gilded Bandit (POST 8) at 3-1 for William Mott/Alvarado is the most viable threat. Mott's horses at Churchill in late-night optional claimers often run big, and Alvarado is live on this entire card.

Secondary Choices

Noble Affair (POST 11) at 4-1 for Asmussen/Jose Ortiz rounds out the secondary tier. Small Town (POST 1) for McCarthy/Prat at 8-1 and Hulkamania (POST 5) for Beckman/Gaffalione at 8-1 are the most interesting secondary plays given their trainer/jockey combinations.

Thunder Buck (POST 9) for Walsh/Saez at 15-1 and Heartily (POST 2) for Ward/Velazquez at 12-1 round out the live longshots.

Longshots

Cruisin Chuck (POST 6) for Foley at 15-1, Ring Curl (POST 4) at 15-1, Sav'n Money (POST 7) for Catalano/BJ Hernandez at 20-1, Red Lad (POST 3) at 30-1, and the remaining deep-priced runners complete the field.

Betting Strategy

Buetane (POST 10) is the single. The exacta using Gilded Bandit (POST 8) and Noble Affair (POST 11) underneath rounds out the play.

Selections

Win: Buetane (POST 10) Place: Gilded Bandit (POST 8) Show: Noble Affair (POST 11)

RACE 14 — Post 8:33 PM ET — 1540f | Dirt | Maiden Special Weight | Purse $120,000

Pace Analysis

The closing maiden special weight at seven and a half furlongs wraps the Derby Day card. Find No Fault (POST 8) for Dale Romans/Gaffalione at 4-1 and Big Jake (POST 9) for Baffert/Prat at 8-1 draw the most attention from a pace standpoint. Interrogator (POST 3) for Asmussen/Ortiz Jr. at 6-1 and Act Of Parliament (POST 7) for Brad Cox/Saez at 6-1 give the top barns strong representation at similar odds.

Key Contenders

Find No Fault (POST 8) at 4-1 for Dale Romans and Gaffalione is the morning-line favorite. Romans knows Churchill intimately and Gaffalione on the closer heading into the post-Derby hour carries the same day-long energy.

Interrogator (POST 3) at 6-1 for Steve Asmussen/Irad Ortiz Jr. is a prime candidate. Asmussen's maiden horses at Churchill often graduate at second or third asking and the Ortiz Jr. book suggests preparation.

Secondary Choices

Act Of Parliament (POST 7) at 6-1 for Brad Cox/Saez ties Interrogator. The Cox barn's deep Derby Day engagement suggests this runner has been carefully prepared for this spot.

Big Jake (POST 9) at 8-1 for Baffert/Prat from post 9 gives the Baffert barn a final shot at the closing card. Prat riding a Baffert maiden at 8-1 deserves serious respect at any Churchill meeting.

Don's Winner (POST 5) for Joe Sharp/Jose Ortiz at 8-1 and Prize Pick (POST 6) for Lynch/Rosario at 12-1 round out the secondary tier.

Longshots

Boylston (POST 1) for Walden/Velazquez at 10-1, Noble Anthem (POST 13) for Moquett/Castellano at 20-1, Brave Pilot (POST 14) for McCarthy/Hernandez at 8-1, Great Moment (POST 11) for Foley/Morales at 12-1, Chianti Town (POST 10) at 20-1, Sleeping Warrior (POST 4) at 15-1, Bestball (POST 2) at 30-1, and Big Braciole (POST 12) at 30-1 complete the field.

Betting Strategy

Find No Fault (POST 8) is the win play. The exacta with Interrogator (POST 3) and Act Of Parliament (POST 7) underneath covers the primary outcomes. Big Jake (POST 9) at 8-1 is the single best value play in the closing race.

Selections

Win: Find No Fault (POST 8) Place: Interrogator (POST 3) Show: Act Of Parliament (POST 7)

Jockey Notes and Insights

Flavien Prat heads into Derby Day as the single most active elite jockey on the card. He pilots Silent Way (POST 3) in Race 1, Memory (POST 4) in Race 2, Praetor (POST 12) in Race 3, Splendora (POST 5) in Race 4, Yellow Card (POST 7) in Race 5, Tour Player (POST 6) in Race 6, Portfolio Duration (POST 3) in Race 7, Crown The Buckeye (POST 7) in Race 8, Stark Contrast (POST 4) in Race 9, Imagination (POST 7) in Race 10, Asbury Park (POST 3) in Race 11, Emerging Market (POST 15) in Race 12, and Big Jake (POST 9) in Race 14. That is a workload that speaks to both Prat's endurance and the depth of trust elite trainers place in him for significant spots.

Tyler Gaffalione has a similarly heavy book and carries the added intrigue of the Ocelli (POST 22) story from the Derby buildup. He rides Get Them Roses (POST 5) in Race 1, Lincoln's Law (POST 11) in Race 2, Vamos Carlitos (POST 2) in Race 3, R Disaster (POST 6) in Race 4, Mondogetsbuckets (POST 8) in Race 5, Program Trading (POST 4) in Race 11, Honey Dutch (POST 9) in Race 9, Fulleffort (POST 20) in Race 12, Hulkamania (POST 5) in Race 13, Stop The Car (POST 5) in Race 8, and Find No Fault (POST 8) in Race 14. The Derby assignment will be the one most watched, but Gaffalione's non-Derby mounts deserve sharp-money monitoring throughout the day.

Irad Ortiz Jr. holds the morning-line call on the Kentucky Derby through Renegade (POST 1) for Pletcher — the most prestigious single assignment of the day outside of the Chad Brown/Prat duo. He also has Powershift (POST 11), Taptastic (POST 8), John Hancock (POST 5), Autumn Evening (POST 3), Disruptor (POST 5), Litigation (POST 9), Rhetorical (POST 6), Buetane (POST 10), Creole Chrome (POST 8), and Interrogator (POST 3). The Ortiz Jr. book on Derby Day is elite across every level of competition.

Jose Ortiz is Cherie Devaux's go-to rider in multiple races and also pairs with Chad Brown in select spots. He rides Ways And Means (POST 4) in Race 4, My Boy Prince (POST 3) in Race 5, Be You (POST 4) in Race 6, Movin On Up (POST 7) in Race 7, Englishman (POST 1) in Race 8, Remember Mamba (POST 12) in Race 9, Hall Of Fame (POST 4) in Race 10, Make Me King (POST 10) in Race 11, Golden Tempo (POST 19) in Race 12, Noble Affair (POST 11) in Race 13, and Don's Winner (POST 5) in Race 14.

Luis Saez rides Commandment (POST 6) in the Derby and is paired with multiple high-percentage trainers throughout the card. John Velazquez handles the primary Further Ado (POST 18) assignment in the Derby and also rides Time To Strike (POST 7) in Race 1, Out Of The Woods (POST 1) in Race 2, Bullard (POST 14) in Race 3, Classic Q (POST 5) in Race 7, Secured Freedom (POST 4) in Race 8, Disco Time (POST 1) in Race 10, Corruption (POST 1) in Race 11, Heartily (POST 2) in Race 13, and Boylston (POST 1) in Race 14. Junior Alvarado handles Knightsbridge (POST 6) in Race 10 — his most significant assignment — as well as Chief Wallabee (POST 12) in the Derby.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Brad Cox is the most multi-faceted trainer presence on this card. He saddles Sovereign Law (POST 2) in Race 2, John Hancock (POST 5) in Race 3, Dragoon Guard (POST 2) in Race 6, the Kentucky Derby entry Further Ado (POST 18) as the buzz horse, Commandment (POST 6) as the second Derby runner, Fulleffort (POST 20) as a third Derby runner, and Act Of Parliament (POST 7) in Race 14. Cox's ability to manage a three-horse Derby entry while maintaining a full card presence is a testament to the depth and organization of his operation. The Cox barn is unquestionably the barn to follow all day long.

Todd Pletcher's card is built around Renegade (POST 1) in the Derby but extends to Powershift (POST 11) in Race 1, Make My Day (POST 6) in Race 2, Vibe (POST 10) in Race 3, Be You (POST 4) in Race 6, Final Score (POST 14) in Race 9, and Disruptor (POST 5) in Race 10. Pletcher's Derby Day record at Churchill is legendary and the combination of Ortiz Jr. and post 1 for Renegade is the most carefully considered assignment on the card.

Bob Baffert's string includes Usha (POST 1) and Splendora (POST 5) in Race 4, Winston Ave (POST 9) in Race 1, Memory (POST 4) in Race 2, Litmus Test (POST 4) in the Derby, Potente (POST 14) in the Derby, Cornucopian (POST 2) and Imagination (POST 7) in Race 10, Crude Velocity (POST 6) in Race 8, Greenwich Village (POST 8) in Race 9, and Big Jake (POST 9) in Race 14. Baffert's Derby-day volume across non-Derby races often yields significant hits in the undercard graded events.

Chad Brown fields Portfolio Duration (POST 3) and Maggie Go (POST 9) in Race 7, Praetor (POST 12) in Race 3, Ways And Means (POST 4) in Race 4, Program Trading (POST 4) and Asbury Park (POST 3) in Race 11, and Emerging Market (POST 15) in the Derby. Brown's dual entries in Races 7 and 11 give his team multiple chances in two of the most valuable turf events on the card.

William Mott saddles Knightsbridge (POST 6) in Race 10 as his marquee undercard assignment, along with Chief Wallabee (POST 12) in the Derby, Temptable (POST 4) in Race 7, Capital Idea (POST 10) in Race 6, Scotland (POST 9) in Race 6, Steel (POST 3) in Race 2, and Gilded Bandit (POST 8) in Race 13. The Mott barn across multiple disciplines makes it one of the most dangerous outfits to oppose on a full card of this depth.

Michael McCarthy ships from California with a strong book including Stark Contrast (POST 4) in Race 9, Yellow Card (POST 7) in Race 5, Let's Be Frank (POST 2) in Race 9, Small Town (POST 1) in Race 13, and Brave Pilot (POST 14) in Race 14. McCarthy's turf angles — particularly Stark Contrast in the American Turf — are worth following closely.

Brendan Walsh handles Sweet Rebecca (POST 2) in Race 7 as the morning-line favorite, Get Them Roses (POST 5) in Race 1, Stop The Car (POST 5) in Race 8, Black Hornet (POST 6) in Race 9, Vasy (POST 10) in Race 9, and Thunder Buck (POST 9) in Race 13. Walsh's turf-mare record at Churchill is strong and Sweet Rebecca (POST 2) is the primary bankable play in the Distaff Turf Mile.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The Kentucky Derby Day card at Churchill Downs offers some of the deepest and most rewarding exotic wagering structures of the calendar year. Below are the primary recommended strategies.

Daily Double — Race 1 into Race 2: Using Powershift (POST 11) as the single in Race 1 with Taptastic (POST 8) and Memory (POST 4) in Race 2 is a low-cost, high-probability double to open the card.

Pick 3 — Races 1 through 3: A structured Play of Powershift (POST 11) in Race 1, Taptastic (POST 8) and Memory (POST 4) in Race 2, and Praetor (POST 12) and John Hancock (POST 5) in Race 3 creates a cost-effective three-leg opening sequence.

Pick 4 — Races 4 through 7 (The Grade 1 Block): This is the premier Pick 4 sequence of the day. Using Ways And Means (POST 4) and Splendora (POST 5) in Race 4, My Boy Prince (POST 3) and Litigation (POST 9) in Race 5, Dragoon Guard (POST 2) and Tour Player (POST 6) in Race 6, and Sweet Rebecca (POST 2) and Portfolio Duration (POST 3) in Race 7 creates a 16-combination Pick 4 that covers the four most capable
