MOUNTAINEER PARK — RACE DAY OVERVIEW

Sunday, May 31, 2026

Mountaineer Park opens its Sunday evening card with eight races spanning a variety of conditions, distances, and surfaces. The card kicks off at 7:00 PM ET and runs through approximately 10:00 PM, offering bettors a full menu of dirt and turf action from the northern West Virginia oval. Tonight's card features a mix of optional claiming, straight claiming, maiden special weight, allowance, and claiming events, with purses ranging from $9,500 on the lower end to $21,000 in the headline optional claiming contests. The field sizes are robust throughout, particularly in Race 2 and Race 8, which both fill with 12 or more starters, creating prime opportunities for value in the exotics.

Several Mountaineer-based trainers dominate tonight's entries. Jay P. Bernardini has horses entered in five of the eight races, and Jami C. Poole, Juan Pablo Silva, and Alejandro Gomez each have multiple entries across the card. The Bernardini barn has been one of the most active outfits at Mountaineer this season, and his ability to place horses in spots where they can win at solid prices is a key angle throughout this card. On the rider side, Brandon Whitacre, Luis Alberto Batista, and Charle Oliveros are heavily booked throughout the evening and will be factors in nearly every race.

Notably, Race 8 fills with 14 starters for a one-mile claiming event on dirt, giving handicappers a wide-open puzzle to solve. Race 2 goes with 12 runners on the turf for maiden special weight fillies and mares, and the large field creates overlays in the exotics. Race 6 is the lone sprint on dirt at 440 furlongs — a quarter-mile-style dash that will favor horses with pure gate speed and inside posts.

The card carries no graded stakes, but the optional claiming races in Race 1 and Race 4 draw competitive fields with legitimate class questions at the $15,000 and $25,000 levels respectively.

WEATHER AND TRACK CONDITIONS

Mountaineer Park sits in Chester, West Virginia, along the Ohio River, and late-May evenings in this region can be unpredictable. For the evening of May 31, 2026, conditions are expected to be partly cloudy with temperatures in the low-to-mid 60s at post time for the first race, cooling slightly through the card. Humidity levels are moderate, and no significant rainfall is forecast during the racing program. The track superintendent reported the main dirt track as fast earlier in the day, and absent any pre-card shower activity, it should remain fast through the evening races.

The turf course, which sees action in Races 2, 3, and 4, was reported as firm to good following recent dry weather across the upper Ohio Valley. Mountaineer's turf course is a tight oval that rewards horses who can handle tight turns and short stretch runs. Firm turf here tends to favor horses with tactical speed that can secure position early and hold on in the stretch.

Bettors should monitor the track condition report immediately before the first race, as river valley humidity occasionally causes late-day moisture to affect the turf course surface. Any degradation to “yielding” would shift the advantage toward horses with pedigree or experience on softer going.

TRACK BIAS AND POST POSITION ANALYSIS

On the Mountaineer Park dirt main track, a front-running bias has historically been present at sprint distances, particularly in the one-turn races. The main track at Mountaineer is a tight one-mile oval, and horses that break alertly and secure the lead or a stalking spot in the first turn tend to hold an advantage over closers in route races as well. In the 440-furlong dash (Race 6), gate speed is everything, and inside post positions are at a premium.

For the dirt routes at a mile and a half (Race 5) and one mile (Race 8), pace scenarios become more important than raw post position, though horses drawn very wide (posts 10 and above) in large fields face a disadvantage due to the additional ground lost on the first turn.

On the turf course, Mountaineer's layout rewards horses that can settle into the two path and make a single run in the stretch. Inside posts on turf can be a mixed blessing — horses buried on the rail without room can be compromised, while those that can secure the rail and stay covered are often in ideal position. Posts 2 through 6 on the turf tend to be the sweet spot at Mountaineer. Very wide post positions in the 11-12 range on the turf (Race 2) deserve a slight downgrade unless the horse has demonstrated an ability to overcome wide trips.

For the 1,540-furlong turf route in Race 4, the additional distance mitigates some of the post position disadvantage, and horses from posts 8 through 12 have shown competitive results in routes on Mountaineer's turf when pace is honest.

RACE-BY-RACE ANALYSIS

RACE 1 — Post (7:00)/6:00/5:00/4:00 — 1210f | D | AO | OClm 15000n3l | BUN | Purse $21,000

This is an optional claiming race for three-year-olds and up at one mile and 70 yards on the main dirt track, with horses eligible if they haven't won three races at the lifetime level. The $21,000 purse draws a competitive eight-horse field, and the Jami C. Poole barn has two entries — Zealous Storm (POST 4) and Dembe Zuma (POST 6) — which will create a formal entry in the wagering. With two live Poole trainees in the gate, watch for cross-entry wagering implications.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

This race shapes up as having a moderate pace. Prince Jeremy (POST 2) has shown early foot in recent efforts and figures to be near the front end from post 2. Zealous Storm (POST 4) has tactical speed and may press or challenge for the lead. Giacomo Casanova (POST 1) likely wants to stalk from just off the pace rather than lead outright. The pace should be honest but not torrid, setting up a scenario where a stalker or presser has the best chance of closing out the mile-and-70-yard trip. Dancing King (POST 5) and Curb That Tiger (POST 8) project as closers.

Key Contenders

Zealous Storm (POST 4) is the morning-line favorite at 2-1 and is well positioned to deliver for the Poole barn. Trainer Jami C. Poole is one of the more reliable operators at Mountaineer when sending out horses at or near the favorite price, and Zealous Storm (POST 4) draws a mid-field post that should allow jockey Elijah Greenidge to navigate traffic and get a clean trip. The optional claiming condition suits horses that are lightly raced or have limited wins, and Zealous Storm (POST 4) appears to fit the conditions well in terms of class.

Prince Jeremy (POST 2) opens at 3-1 on the morning line and is trained by Dennis Cluley, who knows the Mountaineer conditions thoroughly. Kevin Gonzalez gets the mount and is one of the more consistent riders at the meet. Prince Jeremy (POST 2) has the tactical speed to control this from the front, and if the early fractions are comfortable, he could prove tough to reel in at this distance. Post 2 on the dirt at Mountaineer is a favorable draw for a horse with early speed.

Secondary Choices

A Ok (POST 3) draws at 4-1 under Brandon Tapara for the Jay P. Bernardini barn. Bernardini has been sharp this meet, and A Ok (POST 3) likely has the class to compete here. The inside draw in post 3 helps, and Tapara should be able to get good position off the break. Watch the tote for any significant support on this one — Bernardini shippers and local trainees often outrun their odds.

Giacomo Casanova (POST 1) at 6-1 opens the rail for trainer J. Michael Baird. Angel Diaz gets the call and is a capable rider at this level. Giacomo Casanova (POST 1) should stalk the pace from the front post and has tactical flexibility. The 1-post in a sprint-route hybrid can be a double-edged sword, but if the break is clean, Diaz will be able to establish position before the first turn.

Longshots

Sugar Lips (POST 7) at 8-1 for trainer Gary R. Welsh with Ricardo Barrios up is worth a minor inclusion. The wider post (7) hurts, but Sugar Lips (POST 7) may get overlooked at a fair price if she's been training well heading into today's spot.

Dembe Zuma (POST 6) at 10-1 is the second Poole entry and figures to benefit from any pace pressure generated by stablemate Zealous Storm (POST 4). Alejandro Gomez rides. While the morning line suggests this is the lesser of the Poole duo, stable entries sometimes produce surprise winners from the second horse.

Dancing King (POST 5) at 12-1 under B. Whitacre for Jennifer A. Johnson is a big longshot, and the price reflects a horse that will likely need a contested pace to make a late move. Not impossible in the right scenario but ranks below the primary contenders.

Curb That Tiger (POST 8) at 15-1 for Julie Stansbury with Luis Alberto Batista will need significant pace help from the outside post and figures to be outclassed unless conditions conspire in his favor.

Betting Strategy

This race sets up well for Zealous Storm (POST 4) and Prince Jeremy (POST 2) to fill the exacta. The Bernardini angle on A Ok (POST 3) is worth including in multi-race exotics. A solid exacta play is Zealous Storm (POST 4) over Prince Jeremy (POST 2) with a reverse, and A Ok (POST 3) can be used underneath both as a saver.

Selections

Win: Zealous Storm (POST 4) Place: Prince Jeremy (POST 2) Show: A Ok (POST 3)

RACE 2 — Post (7:25)/6:25/5:25/4:25 — 1650f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | BUM | Purse $19,000

A maiden special weight test for fillies and mares on the turf going one mile and 70 yards, this 12-horse field is among the most challenging puzzles on the card. Maiden turf sprints and routes at smaller tracks often produce chaotic results, but within this group there are several horses with legitimate early-form indicators.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

With 12 starters, the pace in this field will be difficult to project with precision. Imprudent (POST 3) is the morning-line favorite at 2-1 and projects as a prominent runner who may try to control or press early. SIXTH GEAR (POST 6) — listed as Fifth Gear (POST 6) on the card — also has shown early speed tendencies. The field is wide enough that the pace should be honest, potentially benefiting a horse that can settle in mid-pack and make a late run on the turf. Dremscomtrubcseofu (POST 1) has the rail and could try to control from inside.

Key Contenders

Imprudent (POST 3) is the clear public choice at 2-1 for trainer Nestor R. Rivera with Luis Alberto Batista aboard. Rivera has had a productive meet at Mountaineer, and Imprudent (POST 3) figures to be well-meant at the morning-line price. Batista is a top rider at this circuit and will have her in striking position on the turf. The 3-post on the inner turf is a favorable draw. For maiden turf routes, horses trained by established Mountaineer barns with a top jockey aboard deserve respect, and Imprudent (POST 3) checks those boxes.

Fifth Gear (POST 6) at 4-1 for trainer Virginia Demczyk with Ricardo Barrios riding is one of the more interesting speed angles in this race. Post 6 on the turf is in the sweet spot of the draw, and if Fifth Gear (POST 6) can secure a prominent position early, she could prove difficult to run down in the stretch on firm turf.

Secondary Choices

Dremscomtrubcseofu (POST 1) at 4-1 for Eric R. Reed with Charle Oliveros aboard is an intriguing horse from the rail post. Reed is a respected trainer at this level, and the rail on turf at Mountaineer can work in a horse's favor if the rider is patient early and finds a pocket along the fence. Oliveros is capable of executing that trip.

Smart Little Lass (POST 7) at 5-1 for Stephani Norris with Alejandro Gomez riding is another contender with a workable post. Gomez is the trainer-jockey here (he also appears as jockey for Citizens Queen (POST 11)), so watch the configuration carefully. Smart Little Lass (POST 7) at 5-1 offers fair value if she runs to her potential.

Sammy The Shark (POST 2) at 9-1 for Paul McEntee is a secondary option with a solid inside post draw. B. Whitacre takes the mount, and McEntee occasionally sends out live longshots at this circuit.

Longshots

Lucky And Pretty (POST 10) at 10-1 for Juan Carlos Gotera with Michael Y. Pagan offers some turf pedigree intrigue at a price. The wide post (10) is a concern in a 12-horse turf field, but if Pagan can get a good trip early and find the rail, the price is worth a small inclusion.

Working On It (POST 12) at 10-1 for Tim Collins with Charle Oliveros — notably, Oliveros is also riding Dremscomtrubcseofu (POST 1) — so there will be a rider conflict to resolve before post time. The outermost post of the field is a significant disadvantage on a tight turf oval.

Party Queen (POST 4) at 12-1 for Kent Knudsen with Wesley Ho is an outsider that faces a steep hill to climb in this company. Ho is not among the leading riders at this meet.

Sister Sola (POST 8) at 12-1 is trained and ridden by A. R. Ramgeet, a trainer-jockey combination that represents a stable that rarely produces winners at this level. Difficult to recommend.

Citizens Queen (POST 11) at 20-1 is trained and ridden by Alejandro Gomez — the same Gomez who is listed as jockey for Smart Little Lass (POST 7). A conflict is likely, and one of these mounts will need a change before race time. Citizens Queen (POST 11) at 20-1 from post 11 in a turf maiden is very speculative.

Raven's Honor (POST 5) at 20-1 for Rebecca A. Holton with Miguel L. Martinez is another deep longshot that needs significant improvement to be a factor.

Continue (POST 9) at 20-1 for Christopher Logston with Jorge A. Monserrate Jr. is a bottom-of-the-barrel longshot in this company.

Betting Strategy

This is a race to play with modest exacta and trifecta coverage rather than a strong straight win bet. Imprudent (POST 3) is the deserving favorite but 2-1 is thin in a 12-horse maiden turf field. Use Imprudent (POST 3) on top of Fifth Gear (POST 6), Dremscomtrubcseofu (POST 1), and Smart Little Lass (POST 7) in exactas, and open up the trifecta to include Sammy The Shark (POST 2) and Lucky And Pretty (POST 10) in the third spot for value.

Selections

Win: Imprudent (POST 3) Place: Fifth Gear (POST 6) Show: Dremscomtrubcseofu (POST 1)

RACE 3 — Post (7:50)/6:50/5:50/4:50 — 1100f | T | R | Alw 4000s | BUM | Purse $15,000

An allowance condition on the turf going approximately 1,100 feet — which translates to roughly six and a half furlongs on the turf — for a $15,000 purse. This is a nine-horse field with a mix of speed and class angles. The “Alw 4000s” condition suggests a starter-type allowance tied to a specific claiming price, which keeps the overall class of the field relatively consistent and prevents sharp class drops from dramatically altering the landscape.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

With nine runners on the turf, the pace picture is cleaner than in Race 2. New Ways To Dream (POST 3) figures prominently as a speed presence, and Vingativa (POST 1) from the rail may also be sent forward early. Flying To Neptune (POST 9) has shown closing tendencies, and if the pace is genuine, she could be coming late. Glitter Bay (POST 6) is likely a mid-pack stalker for the Bernardini barn. This race could develop into a pace duel if multiple horses contest the lead, which would set up the closers.

Key Contenders

New Ways To Dream (POST 3) at 3-1 for Wilson C. Langley with B. Whitacre is the morning-line co-favorite and one of the most interesting horses on this turf card. Post 3 is an ideal draw for a horse with forward speed on Mountaineer's turf, and Whitacre is among the leading riders at this meet. Langley is a reliable conditioner, and New Ways To Dream (POST 3) should have every opportunity to control this race from the front.

Flying To Neptune (POST 9) at 4-1 for Jose J. Magana with Erik Barbaran is the other 4-1 morning-line co-option and comes in from the widest post in the field. Despite the outside draw, Flying To Neptune (POST 9) projects as a closer who will take back and try to loop the field in the stretch. On firm turf with a genuine pace, closers can fire at Mountaineer, and Flying To Neptune (POST 9) deserves serious respect.

Secondary Choices

Vingativa (POST 1) at 4-1 for Christi Lynn Esposito with Bailey Weatherly draws the rail. In a turf sprint-route, the rail can be advantageous for a horse with early speed if the break is clean. Weatherly has shown competence at this circuit, and Esposito's horses tend to be fairly consistent. Vingativa (POST 1) is a legitimate contender.

Glitter Bay (POST 6) at 5-1 for Jay P. Bernardini with Luis Tapara is the Bernardini entry on this race. Post 6 on the turf is a solid draw, and Tapara is capable of executing a stalking trip from that position. The Bernardini barn angle remains relevant throughout this card.

Opposite The Crowd (POST 8) at 6-1 for Juan Pablo Silva with Luis Negron is an interesting option at a value price. Post 8 is workable for a closer on the turf, and if the pace is genuine up front, Opposite The Crowd (POST 8) could be a trifecta factor.

Longshots

Girl Bye (POST 5) at 7-1 for Jeff Fletcher with Y. Yaranga is a mid-range longshot that could outrun her odds if Fletcher has her ready. Girl Bye (POST 5) at 7-1 is worth minor consideration in trifectas.

Betsy Is The Code (POST 4) at 10-1 for Dennis Cluley with Kevin Gonzalez is a price horse that would need things to set up perfectly. Cluley has occasional live longshots at Mountaineer, and Gonzalez is a capable rider. Small inclusion in wider trifecta tickets is reasonable.

Almond Fudge (POST 2) at 12-1 for Terry Crago with Jorge A. Monserrate Jr. is likely outclassed in this spot, though the inside post (2) helps compensate slightly.

Fortunata Italia (POST 7) at 20-1 for Crystal G. Pickett with Charle Oliveros is a deep longshot with minimal realistic chance. Best left off tickets.

Betting Strategy

This race features a clear top-three with some price options underneath. New Ways To Dream (POST 3) and Flying To Neptune (POST 9) form a logical exacta, and the trifecta with Vingativa (POST 1) and Glitter Bay (POST 6) in the third spot offers reasonable value. An exacta box of New Ways To Dream (POST 3), Flying To Neptune (POST 9), and Vingativa (POST 1) is the core strategy here.

Selections

Win: New Ways To Dream (POST 3) Place: Flying To Neptune (POST 9) Show: Vingativa (POST 1)

RACE 4 — Post (8:15)/7:15/6:15/5:15 — 1540f | T | AO | OClm 25000n2x | BUN | Purse $21,000

The co-featured race of the evening is this optional claiming event at $25,000 for horses that haven't won two races at the claiming price. The race goes 1,540 feet on turf — approximately nine and a half furlongs — for a field of 12. This is the deepest optional claiming event of the night, and Jay P. Bernardini saddles two horses: Abundant Energy (POST 3) and Pallino (POST 6). The Bernardini stable dominance is on full display.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

In a 12-horse turf route, the pace will settle quickly after the first quarter mile. Abundant Energy (POST 3) figures as the public choice and likely wants to stalk off the pace. Force Of Justice (POST 12) and Nate The Great (POST 4) may contest the early lead. Thru The Vine (POST 5) has shown a tendency to make a single sustained run. Timeless Bounty (POST 8) and Thought (POST 2) are pace presences to monitor. With a full field, the early fractions in a 1,540-foot turf route tend to be moderate, setting up a stretch-long battle.

Key Contenders

Abundant Energy (POST 3) at 2-1 is the morning-line favorite for the Bernardini barn with Charle Oliveros riding. Bernardini's hot hand this meet combined with Oliveros being one of the circuit's top riders makes this a well-connected favorite. Post 3 is among the best draws in the field for a nine-and-a-half-furlong turf route, and Abundant Energy (POST 3) is expected to rate just off the pace and make a sustained run in the final quarter mile.

Force Of Justice (POST 12) at 4-1 for Virginia Demczyk with Ricardo Barrios is intriguing despite the outside post. Demczyk has Fifth Gear (POST 6) running earlier in Race 2 and appears to have multiple live horses on the card. Force Of Justice (POST 12) at 4-1 from the outside post in a route is a concern for ground lost early, but Barrios is capable of maneuvering and finding position. Respect this horse.

Nate The Great (POST 4) at 4-1 for Michael E. Jones Jr. with Luis Alberto Batista is a legitimate contender. Batista is heavily booked tonight and consistently performs at a high level on this circuit. Post 4 in a 12-horse turf route is manageable, and Nate The Great (POST 4) figures to have early tactical speed to avoid traffic issues.

Secondary Choices

Thru The Vine (POST 5) at 5-1 for Gary L. Johnson with Elijah Greenidge offers turf route value at a fair price. Post 5 is a workable draw, and Greenidge has shown the ability to rate horses effectively in turf routes.

Timeless Bounty (POST 8) at 6-1 for Crystal Cain with N. Arroyo Jr. is the type of horse that turf bettors search for — experienced in routes, equipped with tactical speed, and carrying a price that reflects some uncertainty. Arroyo is a quality rider, and Timeless Bounty (POST 8) at 6-1 represents genuine each-way value.

Thought (POST 2) at 8-1 for Alejandro Gomez with Jorge A. Monserrate Jr. — note that Gomez trains this horse while also training Letmeknowbeforeugo (POST 1) — gives bettors two Gomez stable entries with legitimate morning-line prices. Thought (POST 2) at 8-1 from an excellent post inside deserves consideration.

Longshots

Pallino (POST 6) at 10-1 is the second Bernardini entry and will be part of the stable entry in the wagering with Abundant Energy (POST 3). B. Whitacre rides. The coupling means betting one covers both, which reduces the effective field size.

Connect The Dots (POST 7) at 10-1 for Anthony Farrior with Erik Barbaran is a price horse worth a small trifecta inclusion if the pace sets up for closers.

Letmeknowbeforeugo (POST 1) at 12-1 for Alejandro Gomez with Gomez riding is the stable's second entry from post 1 on the rail. In a long turf route, the rail can be advantageous for a horse with enough positional speed to avoid being shuffled back.

Tap Em (POST 11) at 12-1 for Tomas Martinez with Luis Tapara is a longshot from a wide post. Difficult to recommend in this field.

Defiant Giant (POST 9) at 15-1 for Timothy Shanley with J. Stokes is an outsider with minimal realistic upside.

Breezer (POST 10) at 20-1 for Jeff Fletcher with Y. Yaranga is best left off primary tickets in this field.

Betting Strategy

Abundant Energy (POST 3) is the play to build around in this race. Couple the Bernardini entry (Abundant Energy (POST 3) and Pallino (POST 6)) with Nate The Great (POST 4), Force Of Justice (POST 12), and Timeless Bounty (POST 8) in exactas and trifectas. Thought (POST 2) at 8-1 is a value inclusion for a third leg in trifectas. This race offers the best trifecta value on the card if Abundant Energy (POST 3) wins and a price horse runs second or third.

Selections

Win: Abundant Energy (POST 3) Place: Nate The Great (POST 4) Show: Timeless Bounty (POST 8)

RACE 5 — Post (8:40)/7:40/6:40/5:40 — 1760f | D | C | Clm 4000n3x | BUM | Purse $9,500

A one-mile claiming race on dirt at the modest $4,000 claiming price, this nine-horse field is restricted to horses that haven't won three races at the claiming level. The $9,500 purse is the lowest on the card, and the class level reflects that. These horses are the hardest to predict reliably, as their form can be inconsistent and their connections are often looking for any edge they can find.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

Handle On You (POST 4) at 3-1 is the morning-line choice and figures to be prominent early. Una Roca (POST 2) and Wild Gold Rush (POST 6) may also contest the early lead. Co Heart (POST 9) projects as a closer who will need the pace to be honest. The distance of one mile on dirt at Mountaineer with six turns (effectively) of running sets up a test of stamina at the $4,000 level.

Key Contenders

Handle On You (POST 4) at 3-1 for Juan Carlos Vazquez with Michael Y. Pagan has the morning-line favoritism and a workable post in this nine-horse field. Vazquez is a solid trainer at this level, and Pagan has been riding competently in lower-level claiming races throughout the meet. Handle On You (POST 4) figures to be on or near the front end and should stay on strongly in the stretch if the pace is moderate.

Una Roca (POST 2) at 4-1 for Nestor R. Rivera with Luis Alberto Batista has Batista — the circuit's premier rider — in the irons, which is significant at this claiming level. When a top jock accepts a mount in a low-level claimer, it often signals the horse is live. Rivera has Imprudent (POST 3) running earlier tonight and appears to have multiple horses ready. Post 2 from the inside is a strong draw.

Wild Gold Rush (POST 6) at 4-1 for John T. Brown with Bailey Weatherly is another co-favorite on the morning line. Post 6 is reasonable, and Wild Gold Rush (POST 6) figures to be forwardly placed. Weatherly has been a consistent performer at Mountaineer.

Secondary Choices

Widerthanamile (POST 1) at 6-1 for Jeff Fletcher with Y. Yaranga draws the rail for a one-mile dirt race. The 1-post in a routing race on Mountaineer's oval can be advantageous or troublesome depending on the early pace. Fletcher has multiple runners tonight, and Widerthanamile (POST 1) at 6-1 may offer some value if she can get a clean trip from the inside.

Super Honey Timber (POST 3) at 5-1 for Tina Ramgeet with A. R. Ramgeet is the trainer-jockey combination again for the Ramgeet stable. Super Honey Timber (POST 3) is a step up from the typical Ramgeet offering and may be worth a token inclusion in trifectas.

Co Heart (POST 9) at 8-1 for Juan Pablo Silva with N. Arroyo Jr. is positioned as the deep closer in this field. Post 9 from the outside in a nine-horse field is workable for a closer at a mile, and if the pace is hot early, Co Heart (POST 9) could be rolling at the top of the stretch.

Longshots

Dixie Rag (POST 5) at 10-1 for Donald T. Blankenship with Miguel L. Martinez is a significant longshot in this field. Blankenship has two entries tonight with Eloper (POST 7) also in the race. Not a factor at this price in a field where better options exist.

Mean To Me (POST 8) at 15-1 for Scott Murphy with B. Whitacre needs significant class improvement to be relevant here.

Eloper (POST 7) at 20-1 for Donald T. Blankenship with Kevin Gonzalez is the second Blankenship entry and figures as a non-factor based on morning-line pricing.

Betting Strategy

This is a race for modest straight wagering and small exacta boxes. Handle On You (POST 4) and Una Roca (POST 2) are the logical top two, with Wild Gold Rush (POST 6) completing the trifecta ticket. Co Heart (POST 9) is the value inclusion underneath for longer shot trifectas at a $4,000 claiming level that can produce surprises.

Selections

Win: Handle On You (POST 4) Place: Una Roca (POST 2) Show: Wild Gold Rush (POST 6)

RACE 6 — Post (9:05)/8:05/7:05/6:05 — 440f | D | C | Clm 10000 | BUM | Purse $14,500

The quarter-mile dash is a unique and pure test of raw speed. At 440 furlongs — a straight quarter mile — there is almost no room for pace development, tactical maneuvering, or late runs. Gate speed and the ability to accelerate immediately from the starting gate are the dominant factors. The inside posts carry a significant advantage in this format, particularly posts 1 through 4. The outer posts (7, 8) lose ground immediately on an angled start.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

All eight runners will break as fast as possible and run flat out for the entire trip. There is no pace shape to speak of — just raw speed. The pace will be maximum from the start. The winner will be whichever horse has the most pure speed, the cleanest break, and the best post position draw.

Key Contenders

Determined Love (POST 2) at 3-1 is the morning-line choice for Dave Treharne with Luis Alberto Batista aboard. Post 2 in a quarter-mile dash is an elite draw, and Batista's ability to get a horse accelerating from the gate immediately is a genuine asset in this format. Treharne is a competent trainer at this level, and Determined Love (POST 2) is correctly positioned as the favorite.

Glory Hallelujah (POST 6) at 4-1 for Terry Crago with Bailey Weatherly is an interesting co-option at 4-1. Crago runs regularly at Mountaineer and sends out occasional sharp horses. Post 6 is farther from the inside than ideal, but if Glory Hallelujah (POST 6) has top-level speed, the post disadvantage can be overcome in a quarter-mile format.

Whiskey Diamond (POST 8) at 4-1 for Jay P. Bernardini with Alejandro Gomez is the Bernardini barn entry in this sprint. Post 8 is the outermost draw in the field for a quarter-mile dash, which is a notable disadvantage. However, Bernardini's consistent form this meet and Gomez's ability may compensate. The 4-1 price deserves scrutiny — if handicappers are respecting Whiskey Diamond (POST 8) at even money with that post, there must be strong underlying form.

Secondary Choices

Can She Scoot (POST 1) at 5-1 for Shane M. Spiess with Y. Yaranga draws the inside rail — the premier post in a quarter-mile dash. If Can She Scoot (POST 1) has the gate speed to match her name, this draw is priceless. Yaranga has been a capable rider throughout the meet, and Can She Scoot (POST 1) at 5-1 may represent the best value on the board in this race. Watch the tote to see if money comes in.

Castle Lights (POST 4) at 7-1 for Juan Pablo Silva with N. Arroyo Jr. is the third of Silva's two entries in this race alongside Shake It Baby (POST 5). Post 4 is a mid-field draw that is workable in the sprint. Arroyo is a quality rider.

Longshots

Golden Nole (POST 3) at 8-1 for Michelle Winters with Alexander Chavez is a price horse with a solid post draw. Chavez is not among the circuit's top riders, but the inside post compensates slightly. Difficult to use as more than a trifecta inclusion.

Shake It Baby (POST 5) at 10-1 for Juan Pablo Silva with Luis Negron is the second Silva entry. Post 5 is not ideal for a quarter-mile dash. Longshot.

Coastalness (POST 7) at 12-1 for Sara Stanoszek with Michael Y. Pagan is unlikely to overcome the wide post in this format.

Betting Strategy

In a quarter-mile dash, the bet is simple: find the fastest horse with the best post. Determined Love (POST 2) is the logical choice, and Can She Scoot (POST 1) at 5-1 may be the best value play in this race. An exacta box of Determined Love (POST 2) and Can She Scoot (POST 1) at 5-1 is excellent value. Include Glory Hallelujah (POST 6) as a trifecta bomb.

Selections

Win: Determined Love (POST 2) Place: Can She Scoot (POST 1) Show: Glory Hallelujah (POST 6)

RACE 7 — Post (9:30)/8:30/7:30/6:30 — 1210f | D | HR | RHP 40-60 | BUM | Purse $13,000

A claiming race using the Horsemen's Claiming system, this seven-horse event at one mile and 70 yards on dirt features horses in the $40-60 range of the RHP (Reclaim Horse Price) structure. This format, used at Mountaineer, creates a specific claiming mechanism designed to keep horses at an appropriate level. The field of seven makes this one of the more manageable races to handicap on the card.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Larimar (POST 2) at 2-1 is the clear morning-line choice and figures to control the pace or rate just off it. The Shoe Lady (POST 1) at 3-1 has tactical speed from the inside. Rock Star Parking (POST 4) and Silver Candice (POST 6) are likely mid-pack stalkers. With only seven runners, the pace should develop clearly, and the class question is which horse can maintain her speed around the one-mile-plus course.

Key Contenders

Larimar (POST 2) at 2-1 for Julie Stansbury with Luis Alberto Batista is the morning-line choice and is well-placed to deliver. Stansbury knows the Mountaineer conditions, and having Batista aboard the favorite signals a well-meant effort. Post 2 on the dirt is a prime draw, and Larimar (POST 2) should be able to secure a front-running or pressing position from the break.

The Shoe Lady (POST 1) at 3-1 for Jami C. Poole with Elijah Greenidge is the second choice and draws the inside rail. Poole has had a productive night with multiple entries on the card, and The Shoe Lady (POST 1) is well-placed to give Larimar (POST 2) a strong fight. Greenidge has been effective for the Poole barn throughout the meet. This shapes up as a duel between the top two choices.

Secondary Choices

Rock Star Parking (POST 4) at 4-1 for Juan Pablo Silva with N. Arroyo Jr. is a legitimate contender at a fair price. Post 4 in a seven-horse field is a workable draw, and Arroyo is consistently solid. Silva has entries throughout this card, and Rock Star Parking (POST 4) at 4-1 represents a viable win candidate if the pace is honest.

Silver Candice (POST 6) at 4-1 for Julie Robillard with Michael Y. Pagan is a second co-option at 4-1. Robillard also has Crimson Nights (POST 7) in this race, making it effectively a stable entry. Silver Candice (POST 6) appears to be the preferred of the two Robillard runners based on morning-line pricing.

A Little Canela (POST 5) at 5-1 for Dave Treharne with Ricardo Barrios is a mid-field option with a workable post. Treharne has Determined Love (POST 2) in Race 6 and sends out multiple horses tonight in good form. A Little Canela (POST 5) at 5-1 is a trifecta inclusion candidate.

Longshots

A Kiss For Khozan (POST 3) at 6-1 for Jay P. Bernardini with B. Whitacre is the Bernardini entry in this race. Given Bernardini's consistent performance throughout the card tonight, A Kiss For Khozan (POST 3) at 6-1 deserves more attention than the morning line implies. Whitacre is the regular Bernardini jockey in many spots tonight. This is a potential overlay.

Crimson Nights (POST 7) at 12-1 for Julie Robillard with Luis Tapara is the second Robillard entry and figures as the lesser of the two based on morning-line pricing.

Betting Strategy

This seven-horse field sets up as a straight-forward race with clear top-three contenders. Larimar (POST 2) to win, The Shoe Lady (POST 1) and Rock Star Parking (POST 4) in the place and show spots, with A Kiss For Khozan (POST 3) as the value alternative. The Bernardini angle at 6-1 makes A Kiss For Khozan (POST 3) worth a win bet at the right price.

Selections

Win: Larimar (POST 2) Place: The Shoe Lady (POST 1) Show: A Kiss For Khozan (POST 3)

RACE 8 — Post (9:55)/8:55/7:55/6:55 — 1760f | D | C | Clm 4000n2x | BUN | Purse $10,000

The finale is a challenging one-mile claiming event on dirt for the $4,000 claiming price, restricted to horses that haven't won two races at the level. With 14 starters, this is the largest field on the card and the most chaotic race of the evening. A full field of 14 in a mile route at a low claiming level produces unpredictable pace scenarios and wide-open results. This race is best attacked with deep, wide exotic tickets.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

With 14 horses, the early pace will likely be contested among several speed horses. Saqeel (POST 12) at 3-1 and North Warden (POST 2) at 3-1 are both morning-line co-favorites and are expected to be prominent early. Braggadocious (POST 1) for the Bernardini barn has tactical speed from the rail. Boldness (POST 8) and Kantpaythetoll (POST 10) are likely mid-pack runners. CO HEART ran earlier tonight in Race 5 — no overlap issue here. The pace will be honest or possibly fast, which could set up the closers in the final turn.

Key Contenders

Saqeel (POST 12) at 3-1 for Juan Pablo Silva with Luis Negron is a co-morning-line choice from post 12 in a 14-horse field. While the outside post is a concern, Saqeel (POST 12) at 3-1 suggests strong underlying form that handicappers should respect. Silva has been active all card with multiple entries, and Saqeel (POST 12) appears to be the barn's best chance in the finale. Negron is capable aboard this type.

North Warden (POST 2) at 3-1 for Julie Robillard with Luis Alberto Batista is the other co-favorite and has a dramatically better post draw than Saqeel (POST 12). Batista closes his busy evening in this race and will be looking to add another win. North Warden (POST 2) from inside post 2 with the circuit's best rider is a formidable combination.

Boldness (POST 8) at 4-1 for Stephani Norris with Y. Yaranga is an interesting third choice at 4-1. Post 8 in a 14-horse field is mid-pack, and Boldness (POST 8) figures to rate off the early speed and make a sustained run. Norris has North Warden (POST 2) — wait, North Warden (POST 2) is Robillard. Norris trains R Cardinal Prince (POST 5) and Boldness (POST 8) in this race, making it a Norris barn entry. Boldness (POST 8) appears to be the preferred runner at 4-1 versus R Cardinal Prince (POST 5) at 12-1.

Secondary Choices

Braggadocious (POST 1) at 5-1 for Jay P. Bernardini with Ricardo Barrios closes out Bernardini's busy evening card from the inside rail. Barrios has ridden effectively for Bernardini tonight, and Braggadocious (POST 1) from the rail in a 14-horse field has the advantage of avoiding traffic if the break is clean. The Bernardini barn angle has been present throughout this card, and Braggadocious (POST 1) at 5-1 is a legitimate contender.

Kantpaythetoll (POST 10) at 6-1 for Alysha Robillard with Luis Tapara is a price option at 6-1 with tactical versatility. Post 10 is workable for a horse with enough speed to get in position early.

Carom (POST 9) at 20-1 for Wilson C. Langley with B. Whitacre is the deep price option from Langley's barn. Whitacre closes out his evening here, and if the pace melts down, Carom (POST 9) at 20-1 could be a rolling closer. This is a real bomb play for trifecta tickets.

Longshots

Luvtheoneurwith (POST 3) at 10-1 for Timothy A. Gilbert with Michael Y. Pagan is a mid-priced longshot with a reasonable inside post. Not a primary selection but could fit underneath in trifectas.

Cool Quartet (POST 4) at 8-1 for Christi Flores with F. Garcia is a secondary longshot. Garcia is not among the circuit leaders.

Zimba Warrior (POST 13) at 10-1 for Andrew Erwin with Angel Diaz is a notable outsider. Diaz started the card on Giacomo Casanova (POST 1) in Race 1 and closes on Zimba Warrior (POST 13) here. Post 13 is a very wide draw in a 14-horse field for a mile route — major concern.

Statesboro (POST 6) at 15-1 for Michelle Winters with Alexander Chavez is unlikely to factor.

Lucky Curlin (POST 7) at 15-1 for Tomas Martinez with Charle Oliveros is a price horse. Martinez also trains Tap Em (POST 11) in Race 4. Lucky Curlin (POST 7) at 15-1 needs career improvement to be relevant.

Mr Hoover (POST 11) at 12-1 for Robert S. Scallan with Bailey Weatherly is a late-card longshot. Weatherly has been active all evening, and SCALLAN's horses are often overlooked. Worth a token inclusion in 50-cent trifecta wheels.

Classic King (POST 14) at 12-1 for Alejandro Gomez with Gomez riding is the outermost post of the entire card. In a 14-horse field at one mile on dirt, post 14 is a near-prohibitive disadvantage. Avoid.

R Cardinal Prince (POST 5) at 12-1 for Stephani Norris with Brandon Tapara is the second Norris entry and the lesser of the two at morning-line pricing.

Race 8 is a chaos race. The best approach is to single NORTH WARDEN (POST 2) or SAQEEL (POST 12) on top of a wide bottom tier for trifectas, and play a double exacta combining both 3-1 co-favorites in any order under BRAGGADOCIOUS (POST 1) and BOLDNESS (POST 8). For the trifecta, use NORTH WARDEN (POST 2) and SAQEEL (POST 12) on top with BRAGGADOCIOUS (POST 1), BOLDNESS (POST 8), KANTPAYTHETOLL (POST 10), and CAROM (POST 9) in the second and third positions.

Selections

Win: North Warden (POST 2) Place: Saqeel (POST 12) Show: Braggadocious (POST 1)

JOCKEY NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Luis Alberto Batista leads this card in terms of sheer quality of mounts and projected impact. He is booked on Una Roca (POST 2) in Race 5, Determined Love (POST 2) in Race 6, Larimar (POST 2) in Race 7, Imprudent (POST 3) in Race 2, North Warden (POST 2) in Race 8, and Nate The Great (POST 4) in Race 4. That is a stunning six-race book for the evening, and Batista consistently finishes among the meet leaders at Mountaineer Park. When a trainer books Batista in a low-to-mid level claiming race, it frequently signals a live effort. His mount on Larimar (POST 2) in Race 7 for Julie Stansbury and North Warden (POST 2) in Race 8 for Julie Robillard are among the most significant of the evening.

Brandon Whitacre is the volume leader on tonight's card with mounts in Race 1 (DANCING KING, POST 5), Race 2 (SAMMY THE SHARK, POST 2), Race 3 (NEW WAYS TO DREAM, POST 3), Race 4 (PALLINO, POST 6), Race 5 (MEAN TO ME, POST 8), Race 7 (A KISS FOR KHOZAN, POST 3), and Race 8 (CAROM, POST 9). Whitacre's best mount of the evening is New Ways To Dream (POST 3) in Race 3, where he combines with trainer Wilson C. Langley on the 3-1 morning-line co-favorite. Whitacre's consistent presence across all eight races makes him the evening's workhorse.

Charle Oliveros has important mounts in Race 2 (DREMSCOMTRUBCSEOFU, POST 1), Race 4 (ABUNDANT ENERGY, POST 3), and Race 8 (LUCKY CURLIN, POST 7). His biggest assignment is Abundant Energy (POST 3) in Race 4 for the Bernardini barn — the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the card's highest-purse turf route. Note the potential rider conflict in Race 2 where Oliveros is listed on both Dremscomtrubcseofu (POST 1) and Working On It (POST 12) — this must be resolved before race time.

Elijah Greenidge handles the primary Poole barn mounts throughout the card: Zealous Storm (POST 4) in Race 1 and The Shoe Lady (POST 1) in Race 7. The Poole connection is Greenidge's primary assignment, and he should be fully focused on these key rides.

Y. Yaranga rides for Jeff Fletcher on multiple occasions: Widerthanamile (POST 1) in Race 5, Can She Scoot (POST 1) in Race 6, and Girl Bye (POST 5) in Race 3. Yaranga's best opportunity may be Can She Scoot (POST 1) in the quarter-mile dash, where the rail post and name suggest a speed profile perfectly suited to the 440-furlong distance.

Ricardo Barrios closes out a productive evening on Braggadocious (POST 1) for Bernardini in Race 8 after riding Sugar Lips (POST 7) in Race 1, SIXTH GEAR (POST 6) in Race 2, A Little Canela (POST 5) in Race 7, and Force Of Justice (POST 12) in Race 4. Barrios has a strong Bernardini book tonight.

TRAINER NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Jay P. Bernardini is the dominant trainer on this card with five horses entered across Races 1 through 8. His entries include A Ok (POST 3) in Race 1, Glitter Bay (POST 6) in Race 3, Abundant Energy (POST 3) and Pallino (POST 6) in Race 4, Whiskey Diamond (POST 8) in Race 6, A Kiss For Khozan (POST 3) in Race 7, and Braggadocious (POST 1) in Race 8. This level of activity suggests a barn in excellent working order, and Bernardini's ability to place horses in appropriate spots has been evident throughout the meet. His use of top riders — Oliveros on Abundant Energy (POST 3), Whitacre on A Kiss For Khozan (POST 3), Barrios on Braggadocious (POST 1) — reflects confidence in each entry. The Bernardini angle is live throughout the card.

Jami C. Poole enters Zealous Storm (POST 4) and Dembe Zuma (POST 6) in Race 1, and The Shoe Lady (POST 1) in Race 7. The dual entry in Race 1 with Greenidge on the favorite (ZEALOUS STORM, POST 4) and Gomez on the longer shot (DEMBE ZUMA, POST 6) is a classic stable hedging approach. Watch for Dembe Zuma (POST 6) to run better than 10-1 suggests if Zealous Storm (POST 4) is the intended pacemaker.

Juan Pablo Silva has four separate entries across Races 5, 6, 7, and 8: Co Heart (POST 9) in Race 5, Castle Lights (POST 4) and Shake It Baby (POST 5) in Race 6, Rock Star Parking (POST 4) in Race 7, and Saqeel (POST 12) in Race 8. The 3-1 morning line on Saqeel (POST 12) despite the wide post suggests this horse enters with strong current form. Silva appears to have multiple live runners tonight.

Alejandro Gomez serves as both trainer and jockey for several horses tonight, including Letmeknowbeforeugo (POST 1) in Race 4, Classic King (POST 14) in Race 8, and potentially Citizens Queen (POST 11) in Race 2 — though rider conflicts may result in jockey changes on some of these horses before post time. Thought (POST 2) in Race 4 is also a Gomez-trained horse, confirming two Gomez stable entries in Race 4.

Nestor R. Rivera has Imprudent (POST 3) in Race 2 and Una Roca (POST 2) in Race 5. Both horses carry top jockeys (Batista on both), and Rivera's ability to book Batista twice in one evening suggests both horses are seriously meant.

Julie Stansbury has Larimar (POST 2) in Race 7 and Curb That Tiger (POST 8) in Race 1. The contrast in morning-line pricing — 2-1 for Larimar (POST 2) and 15-1 for Curb That Tiger (POST 8) — makes the Race 7 entry the clear priority for the stable. Batista's presence on Larimar (POST 2) confirms the stable is pulling out the stops.

Julie Robillard enters North Warden (POST 2) and Silver Candice (POST 6) and Crimson Nights (POST 7) across Races 7 and 8. North Warden (POST 2) in Race 8 with Batista is the premier entry, while Silver Candice (POST 6) and Crimson Nights (POST 7) in Race 7 reflect a dual coverage approach in the seventh.

BEST WAGERING STRATEGIES AND VALUE PLAYS

The single best value on tonight's card is Can She Scoot (POST 1) at 5-1 in Race 6. In a quarter-mile dash, the inside rail post combined with a name that implies sprinting ability and a price that slightly exceeds the favorite makes this horse the most compelling overlay of the evening. Bet to win with confidence, and use in the exacta with Determined Love (POST 2).

The best win bet at a legitimate price is Thought (POST 2) at 8-1 in Race 4 for the Gomez stable from an inside post in a nine-and-a-half-furlong turf route. If Abundant Energy (POST 3) is the designated stable star and Thought (POST 2) gets a quality trip from post 2, 8-1 is an overlaid price for a horse with tactical positional advantages.

The card-long Pick 4 encompassing Races 5 through 8 is the primary exotic target tonight. The suggested structure is:

Race 5: HANDLE ON YOU (POST 4), UNA ROCA (POST 2)

Race 6: DETERMINED LOVE (POST 2), CAN SHE SCOOT (POST 1)

Race 7: LARIMAR (POST 2), THE SHOE LADY (POST 1)

Race 8: NORTH WARDEN (POST 2), SAQEEL (POST 12), BRAGGADOCIOUS (POST 1)

This 2x2x2x3 combination costs 24 tickets at $1 base, or $24 for a $1 Pick 4. The combination of two 3-1 co-favorites in Race 8 provides excellent coverage of the probable top finishers while keeping the ticket cost manageable.

For the Pick 5 running through Races 4 through 8, single Abundant Energy (POST 3) in Race 4 (accepting the stable entry coverage) and spread wide in Race 8 to maximize potential payouts. The Pick 5 structure:

Race 4: ABUNDANT ENERGY (POST 3) / PALLINO (POST 6) — stable entry single

Race 5: HANDLE ON YOU (POST 4), UNA ROCA (POST 2), WILD GOLD RUSH (POST 6)

Race 6: DETERMINED LOVE (POST 2), CAN SHE SCOOT (POST 1)

Race 7: LARIMAR (POST 2), THE SHOE LADY (POST 1), A KISS FOR KHOZAN (POST 3)

Race 8: NORTH WARDEN (POST 2), SAQEEL (POST 12), BRAGGADOCIOUS (POST 1), BOLDNESS (POST 8)

This 1x3x2x3x4 combination costs 72 tickets at $0.50 base, or $36 for a $0.50 Pick 5. If Abundant Energy (POST 3) runs true to favoritism in Race 4, the Pick 5 pool payouts at Mountaineer can be generous on a Sunday evening card with relatively modest handle.

For the daily double in Races 7 and 8, a box of Larimar (POST 2) and The Shoe Lady (POST 1) on top of North Warden (POST 2), Saqeel (POST 12), and Braggadocious (POST 1) offers a manageable 2×3 structure at $1 per combination, costing $6 total. If the two co-favorites land in Races 7 and 8, this double likely pays in the $15-$25 range. Getting both 3-1 morning-line shots to win in tandem could produce a legitimate overlay given the depth of the Race 8 field.

The trifecta of greatest potential value is in Race 2, where a 12-horse turf maiden field can produce significant payouts. Key Imprudent (POST 3) on top, use Fifth Gear (POST 6), Dremscomtrubcseofu (POST 1), and Smart Little Lass (POST 7) in second, and open the third leg to include Sammy The Shark (POST 2), Lucky And Pretty (POST 10), and Party Queen (POST 4). A $0.50 trifecta key of Imprudent (POST 3) over three horses over five horses costs $15 at $0.50 base and can return hundreds if a price horse completes the ticket.

The best single-race exotic play of the evening is the Race 4 exacta. If Abundant Energy (POST 3) lands the win at 2-1, the second spot becomes the key. Nate The Great (POST 4) at 4-1, Timeless Bounty (POST 8) at 6-1, Thought (POST 2) at 8-1, and Force Of Justice (POST 12) at 4-1 all represent legitimate alternatives in the place spot. A $1 exacta part-wheel of Abundant Energy (POST 3) on top of the four secondary choices costs $4 and can return $30-$80 depending on which horse closes the ticket. This is the highest-value exacta structure on the card.
