Race Day Overview — Penn National, May 21, 2026

Penn National Race Course in Grantham, Pennsylvania hosts an eight-race Thursday evening card featuring a mix of claiming, allowance, and maiden contests spanning both the dirt and turf surfaces. The card opens at 5:45 PM ET and runs through the nightcap, which is scheduled for 8:39 PM ET. Tonight's program leans heavily on the lower claiming ranks, with the feature being a $37,000 allowance sprint in Race 5 that figures to attract the most competitive field of the evening.

The card is headlined by a solid allowance event in Race 5, while the rest of the program cycles through maiden claimers, open claimers, and optional claiming races. The bottom of the card features two $4,000 claiming events that will attract maiden and lightly raced horses trying to break their maiden at the lowest level of the claiming ladder.

Of note from the regional racing scene, the 151st Preakness Stakes is scheduled for this weekend at Laurel Park, and connections throughout the Mid-Atlantic horsing community are focused on that event. Taj Mahal, the undefeated two-time stakes winner owned by a partnership led by SF Racing, drew the rail in what promises to be a full field of 14 horses for the classic. While tonight's Penn National card is distinctly separate from that action, the buzz surrounding the mid-Atlantic racing circuit has been strong heading into this stretch of the meet.

Weather and Track Conditions — Penn National, May 21, 2026

Penn National is located in south-central Pennsylvania at approximately 500 feet elevation. Mid-May in that region typically delivers mild to warm evening temperatures. Conditions heading into Wednesday evening suggested partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid-60s Fahrenheit by post time, with a light breeze from the southwest. No significant precipitation is anticipated for the evening, which points toward a fast main track and firm turf for tonight's card.

The Penn National main track is a one-mile oval with a standard dirt composition. Under dry spring conditions, the surface tends to play fast and the times are reliable. The turf course at Penn National is a tight inner course that can favor horses with tactical speed who are capable of finding a comfortable stalking position early. The turf strip has been well-maintained through the spring and is expected to be firm to good for tonight's races.

A fast main track and firm turf are the assumed conditions going forward in this analysis. If any late scratches or surface changes alter these assumptions, adjustments to the selections should be made accordingly.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis — Penn National

Penn National is a one-mile oval that is relatively tight in configuration, which can create some unique pace dynamics. On a fast main track, there is a moderate speed bias at Penn National, particularly in sprint distances where horses breaking from inside posts have a slight advantage in terms of getting into position early without burning energy. However, in longer route distances, outside posts are not a severe disadvantage as the run into the first turn allows horses time to settle.

In sprints on the main track, the one and two posts tend to benefit horses with early speed, while middle posts allow for a clean break and clear run. In route races going a mile or more, horses breaking from the outside posts have historically needed to either show early speed or be rated well off the pace, as the first turn comes up relatively quickly on the far side.

On the turf course, the rail can be a genuine advantage at a tight track like Penn National, particularly if the inside portion of the course is not being avoided due to wear. Post one on the turf is generally considered favorable here, provided the horse in question has the early speed to take advantage of the position or the jockey is skilled enough to find a trip along the inside.

The Penn National jockey colony leans on a handful of regular riders who know the track configuration well. Riders like Jomar Torres, Angel Rodriguez, Wilfredo Corujo, Inoel Beato, and Yabriel Ramos get the majority of the quality mounts and have detailed knowledge of how to navigate the oval. That familiarity is a significant advantage in close races and should be factored into your selections throughout the card.

RACE 1 — Post (5:45)/4:45/3:45/2:45 — 1210f | D | C | Clm 4000n1y | BUM | Purse $12,000

This is a six-and-a-half-furlong dirt sprint for fillies and mares at the $4,000 claiming level restricted to non-winners of a race in the past year. At this bottom level of the claiming ranks, form analysis can be tricky as horses come in with varying degrees of fitness and some have been away from the races for extended periods. The key is identifying horses that are dropping into this spot with a legitimate shot and those that show any sign of current form or sharp works.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

With six horses entered, the pace scenario here is relatively straightforward. Queen Wiggy (POST 2) and Shining Spirit (POST 5) are the two horses most likely to push the pace from the front. The question is whether either of them will be pressured into a contested early pace that allows a closer to run them down. At 6.5 furlongs on the Penn National main track, a moderate early pace typically favors horses that can settle just behind the leaders and make one sustained run. If the early fractions are honest, a horse like Honorable Chill (POST 3) figures to be on or near the front end as well. The pace could get fairly honest early, which would set up for a closer or a mid-pack type.

Key Contenders

Queen Wiggy (POST 2) is the clear morning line favorite at 1-1 and draws favorable from the two post. Trained by Elliott Soto-Martinez and ridden by Yabriel Ramos, she is the horse the book has installed as the heavy chalk, which suggests recent form that is superior to most in this field. At the $4,000 non-winners-in-a-year level, a horse with even modest recent form can dominate, and Ramos is one of the more consistent riders in this colony. She should be respected accordingly, though the short price limits her value in straight win wagering.

Shining Spirit (POST 5) is the second choice at 2-1 and represents a live alternative to the favorite. Trained by Brandon Kulp, who is one of the more active trainers on the Penn National circuit, and ridden by Angel Rodriguez, she has the benefit of a competent connections team. The five post in a six-horse field gives her a clean run and she figures to have enough early speed to put herself in a prominent position. At 2-1 she is fairly priced and makes sense as the primary win alternative.

Secondary Choices

Honorable Chill (POST 3) exits at 4-1 on the morning line with Jomar Torres in the irons. Torres is one of the leading riders at the meet and his presence on a 4-1 shot at this level is worth noting. If the pace gets hot early between the top two choices, Honorable Chill could find herself in a good spot to run them down late. Trainer Bernard Dunham sends her in with what appears to be a calculated placement, and the three post is solid at this distance on Penn's main track.

My Boss Lady (POST 4) is listed at 6-1 and is trained by Carl O'Callahan with Aguilar in the saddle. She draws the four post which is a comfortable middle position and gives rider Aguilar options. At 6-1 she offers some value if the race sets up in her favor, though her price suggests she may not have the overall form of the top two choices.

Longshots

Kentucky Reign (POST 1) is listed at 15-1 and is trained by J.F. Bobadilla with Maicol Inirio up. The rail post is not necessarily a disadvantage at this distance, but 15-1 suggests the form has been difficult to decipher. At this price, she is only interesting in exotic wagering. La Lima (POST 6) is also at 15-1 and draws the six post on the outside. Trained by Mark Ippolito and ridden by Vladimir Diaz, she is the widest of the field and at 15-1 would need the pace to collapse in front of her for any realistic shot. Both longshots can be used underneath in multi-race exotics at low cost.

Betting Strategy

Queen Wiggy (POST 2) is legitimate but at 1-1 the return on investment is minimal. The best play here is to use Shining Spirit (POST 5) as the top win selection and key Honorable Chill (POST 3) with her in the exacta. An exacta box of the 2, 3, and 5 covers the most likely outcomes and pays better than a straight win bet on the favorite.

Selections

Win: Shining Spirit (POST 5) Place: Queen Wiggy (POST 2) Show: Honorable Chill (POST 3)

RACE 2 — Post (6:14)/5:14/4:14/3:14 — 1100f | T | CO | OClm 16000 | BUM | Purse $21,000

This is a six-furlong optional claiming event on the turf for fillies and mares. At $16,000 optional claiming with a $21,000 purse, the field is relatively deep and competitive. Nine horses are entered, and with this kind of a field on the turf, pace analysis and post position take on added importance. The turf at Penn National at six furlongs will require horses to settle quickly and make their best run in the final furlong.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

The pace in this nine-horse turf sprint is likely to be contested. MUSIC CLARIFICATION (POST 2) is the 1-1 morning line choice, suggesting she is capable of setting or pressing the pace. Ballykeefe (POST 6) at 2-1 is the second choice and likely will be ridden to stalk the leaders. Regal Miss Lily (POST 9) at 4-1 draws the far outside, which on the turf sprint course at Penn National can be a significant disadvantage if the pace is honest, as she will need to either angle over quickly or lose ground around the first turn. The ideal pace scenario for this race is a moderate early tempo that allows mid-pack horses to close.

Key Contenders

MUSIC CLARIFICATION (POST 2) is the 1-1 morning line favorite trained by Kathlee Crook-Demasi, who is one of the most active trainers in the Penn National colony and consistently gets her horses ready to fire. Jomar Torres rides, and as noted throughout this report, Torres is among the very best in this jockey colony. The two post on the turf gives her an excellent inside position. The combination of a sharp trainer, top jockey, and favorable post makes her a legitimate favorite despite the low price.

Ballykeefe (POST 6) is the 2-1 second choice trained by Kevin Boniface and ridden by Taylor Kingsley. This horse figures to be close to the pace from a mid-field position and at 2-1 is the most logical alternative to the favorite. Boniface has been solid with his turf horses at this level and Kingsley is comfortable at Penn National. Ballykeefe (POST 6) is the top win alternative.

Secondary Choices

Regal Miss Lily (POST 9) at 4-1 is trained by Flint Stites and ridden by Wilfredo Corujo. Despite the outside post, this is a horse that handicappers have identified as a legitimate contender. Corujo is skilled enough to angle her over and find a reasonable position. At 4-1 she offers value compared to the top two choices and should be included in exacta and trifecta combinations.

Take Charge Boo (POST 7) at 6-1 is trained by Michelle Castillo and ridden by Wesley Ho. She draws the seven post, which is not ideal on the turf but manageable at six furlongs. At 6-1 she is a logical inclusion in trifecta coverage.

Octet (POST 1) at 5-1 is trained by Mark Salvaggio and ridden by Inoel Beato. The one post on the turf is excellent and Beato is capable of rating her close to the pace from the inside. At 5-1 this is a horse that deserves serious consideration, and the favorable post could offset any concerns about recent form.

Longshots

Howdidthatworkout (POST 8) at 8-1 is trained by Phillip Farley and ridden by Angel Cruz. She draws a difficult outside post for a turf sprint and will need to overcome some ground loss early. At 8-1 she is a deep closer type who needs pace help. Avril (POST 3) at 15-1 and Spicy Bubba (POST 4) at 12-1 are both longshots who are difficult to recommend in win wagering but can be sprinkled into trifecta tickets for coverage. No Argument (POST 5) at 12-1 is in a similar category. These horses are at long odds for a reason and would need significant pace collapse in front of them to factor.

Betting Strategy

The favorite MUSIC CLARIFICATION (POST 2) at 1-1 is again difficult to endorse in straight win wagering. The best play is to use Octet (POST 1) to win at 5-1, a horse with the best post position on the turf, a capable jockey in Beato, and a reasonable price. Exacta: wheel Octet (POST 1) over MUSIC CLARIFICATION (POST 2), Ballykeefe (POST 6), and Regal Miss Lily (POST 9). Trifecta: 1 with 2/6 with 2/6/7/9.

Selections

Win: Octet (POST 1) Place: MUSIC CLARIFICATION (POST 2) Show: Ballykeefe (POST 6)

RACE 3 — Post (6:43)/5:43/4:43/3:43 — 1100f | T | C | Clm 10000 | BUN | Purse $22,000

A ten-horse turf sprint on the claiming end at $10,000 for non-winners of a specified condition. This is a large field for a turf sprint at Penn National, and with ten horses going six furlongs on the tight inner course, traffic and trip luck will be significant factors. Trainer and jockey angles, pace setup, and post position will be critical in sorting out this competitive field.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

With ten horses at six furlongs on the turf, the pace scenario is complicated. Gins And Tins (POST 7) is the 3-1 morning line second choice and figures to be prominent early. Made To Hustle (POST 4) at 4-1 suggests a horse with enough speed to press the pace. Harbor Of Gold (POST 9) at 8-1 draws a tough outside post, as does Great Kisser (POST 10) at 10-1. The inside posts figure to be at a premium here, and horses that draw inside have a clear advantage in terms of positioning. A contentious early pace with multiple speed horses pressing each other would set up well for a closer with tactical ability.

Key Contenders

Gins And Tins (POST 7) is the 3-1 morning line second choice trained by Brandon Kulp and ridden by Angel Rodriguez. Kulp is one of the leading trainers at Penn National and his horses consistently perform near their morning line. Rodriguez is a capable jockey who knows how to navigate a crowded turf field. From post seven, the partnership will need to work slightly wide initially, but a horse with enough tactical speed can overcome that from this position. Gins And Tins (POST 7) is the top selection.

Made To Hustle (POST 4) at 4-1 is trained by Ronald Rogers and ridden by Maicol Inirio. The four post is excellent for a ten-horse turf field, giving rider Inirio options to sit inside or press the pace as the race develops. At 4-1 this horse offers value and is a legitimate top choice in a race with no dominant favorite.

Secondary Choices

Curious Soul (POST 5) at 6-1 is trained by Richard Vega and ridden by Inoel Beato. The five post is workable at this distance on turf, and Beato is a capable turf rider. At 6-1 this horse should be included in exacta and trifecta combinations. Masen (POST 3) at 5-1 is trained by Karin Wagner and ridden by Jose Vargas. The three post is excellent on the turf and at 5-1 this horse deserves strong consideration. If Vargas can find a clean early position along the rail, Masen (POST 3) could be a factor late.

Harbor Of Gold (POST 9) at 8-1 is trained by Kathlee Crook-Demasi, who as noted is one of the better trainers at Penn National, with Jomar Torres aboard. Despite the outside post, the combination of a sharp trainer and a top jockey makes this horse dangerous. Torres is skilled enough to find a position from post nine and this barn wins at a respectable clip at this level. Harbor Of Gold (POST 9) is a prime exacta and trifecta inclusion.

Longshots

Shakin Loose (POST 2) at 8-1 draws the two post which is excellent on turf, but the 8-1 price suggests form issues. Trainer Paulina Sinnefia and jockey Julio Hernandez are the connections. Worth a small inclusion in trifecta tickets. Gentle Breeze (POST 6) at 8-1 is trained by Bruce Kravets and ridden by Yabriel Ramos. Kravets conditions two horses in this race, the other being Great Kisser (POST 10), and the presence of two runners from the same barn should be noted. Mission First (POST 1) at 20-1 draws the rail but at that price is a significant longshot. Valore (POST 8) at 20-1 and Great Kisser (POST 10) at 10-1 round out the field. The latter, trained by Kravets with D. Cora up, is at a price that invites a small look in trifecta coverage.

Betting Strategy

With ten horses on the turf, trifecta wagering is the primary angle here. Made To Hustle (POST 4) and Gins And Tins (POST 7) are the primary win selections. Trifecta: use 4 and 7 over 3, 5, 9 over 3, 5, 6, 9. Exacta: 4 and 7 over each other and over 3, 5, and 9.

Selections

Win: Made To Hustle (POST 4) Place: Gins And Tins (POST 7) Show: Harbor Of Gold (POST 9)

RACE 4 — Post (7:12)/6:12/5:12/4:12 — 1830f | D | C | Clm 4000n1y | BUN | Purse $12,000

A mile-and-a-sixteenth dirt route for non-winners in a year at the $4,000 claiming level. This is a small field of five horses, which simplifies the pace analysis but still requires careful evaluation of each horse's ability to handle the distance. Route races at the $4,000 claiming level at Penn National often come down to which horse can run the most consistent fractions.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

With five horses in a route, the pace scenario is manageable. Uninvited Guest (POST 4) is the 1-1 morning line favorite and is likely to set or press the pace. Ocala Dream (POST 5) at 2-1 figures to be close early as the second choice, and the two of them could engage in an early duel that sets up for a closer. Debate (POST 3) at 3-1 is the third choice and, at a route distance, could sit just off the pace and try to run down the leaders in the stretch. The dynamic between the top three choices will determine whether the race is won on the front end or by a closing move.

Key Contenders

Uninvited Guest (POST 4) at 1-1 is trained by Brandon Kulp and ridden by Angel Rodriguez. This is the third Kulp/Rodriguez combination on tonight's card, reinforcing the strength of this trainer-jockey partnership. As the heavy favorite at a $4,000 route, this horse is clearly superior on form, and Kulp's horses at Penn National have shown a consistent ability to perform near their odds. However, the 1-1 price again limits win wagering appeal.

Ocala Dream (POST 5) at 2-1 is trained by Erin McClellan and ridden by Inoel Beato. The five post in a five-horse field is the outside, which at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track means she will have a longer run to the first turn. Beato is a capable rider who can settle her early and keep her in contention. At 2-1 she is the most logical alternative to the favorite.

Secondary Choices

Debate (POST 3) at 3-1 is trained by Bob Wolfe Jr. and ridden by Wilfredo Corujo. The three post is favorable at this route distance, and Corujo is a seasoned rider who can manage a horse in a five-horse field effectively. Trainer Wolfe has done solid work at Penn National and a 3-1 horse in a five-horse field offers legitimate value if the favorite is vulnerable.

Bold Ambition (POST 1) at 8-1 is trained by Bruce Kravets and ridden by D. Cora. The rail post in a route can be either an advantage or a disadvantage depending on early positioning. At 8-1 in a five-horse field, the price is a signal that recent form has been inconsistent, but any horse in a five-horse field is not to be dismissed entirely. Include in trifecta coverage.

Longshots

Bangkok Bob (POST 2) at 10-1 is the longest shot in the field and is trained by David Geist with E. Flores riding. In a five-horse field, a 10-1 shot is a clear form underdog, but at this level of the claiming ranks, his connections would not enter him without some belief in a competitive effort. He can be used as a trifecta fill at minimal cost.

Betting Strategy

The most logical play in this race is to use Debate (POST 3) as the top win selection at 3-1, which offers real value compared to the 1-1 and 2-1 choices. Exacta: 3 over 4 and 5, and 4 over 3 and 5. Trifecta: box 3, 4, and 5 for the primary ticket, with a small bet including 1 as a fourth horse for coverage.

Selections

Win: Debate (POST 3) Place: Uninvited Guest (POST 4) Show: Ocala Dream (POST 5)

RACE 5 — Post (7:41)/6:41/5:41/4:41 — 1320f | D | A | Alw 37000n1x | BUN | Purse $37,000

The feature event of the evening is a mile allowance on the main track for non-winners of a race other than maiden or claiming. This is the highest purse on the card at $37,000 and should feature the best horses of the night. With seven runners entered, the field is manageable and the pace setup is interesting. This race will likely be decided in the stretch of the one-turn mile.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

Confiscated (POST 7) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite and figures to be prominent. Showtime Matinee (POST 1) at 3-1 has early speed characteristics from the rail. Whisper Roar (POST 2) at 4-1 and Great Richie M (POST 3) at 4-1 are co-third choices who figure to be involved early as well. With multiple horses potentially pressing the pace at allowance level, the pace should be honest, which would theoretically set up for a closer. However, in a seven-horse field at one mile on a fast track, front-runners who can relax early have a legitimate shot to wire the field.

Key Contenders

Confiscated (POST 7) at 2-1 is trained by Kathlee Crook-Demasi and ridden by Jomar Torres. This is the fourth appearance of the Crook-Demasi barn on tonight's card, and her horses have been consistently competitive. The combination of the leading trainer on the card and Torres in the saddle makes Confiscated (POST 7) the most dangerous horse in the feature. At 2-1 the price is not generous but is fair for what figures to be the class of the field. Torres from the seven post will need to find early position on the outside but in a seven-horse field that is manageable.

Showtime Matinee (POST 1) at 3-1 is trained by Cody Beattie and ridden by Wilfredo Corujo. The Beattie barn also enters Oneofthegoodguys (POST 4) in this same race, giving the stable two shots at the feature purse. Showtime Matinee (POST 1) breaks from the rail at a one-turn mile, which is not a significant disadvantage, and Corujo can rate him off the early pace if needed. The Beattie/Corujo combination has been effective at Penn National and this horse has the profile of a legitimate contender.

Secondary Choices

Whisper Roar (POST 2) at 4-1 is trained by Brandon Kulp and ridden by Angel Rodriguez, giving Kulp yet another live runner on tonight's card. The two post is excellent at a one-turn mile and Rodriguez will have Whisper Roar (POST 2) close to the pace from the start. Kulp's horses have been fit and ready throughout this card and this one figures to run well. At 4-1 with a favorable post and a top jockey, Whisper Roar (POST 2) is a strong exacta contender.

Great Richie M (POST 3) at 4-1 is trained by Paulina Sinnefia and ridden by Carlos Eduardo Lopez. The three post is solid and Sinnefia has been effective at Penn National. At co-fourth on the morning line, this horse is well-regarded by the linemaker and deserves inclusion in all exotic wagering. Oneofthegoodguys (POST 4) at 5-1 is the second Beattie entrant, ridden by Inoel Beato. As a stablemate of Showtime Matinee (POST 1), connections will likely have a betting preference between the two, and if Showtime Matinee (POST 1) is the primary betting interest, Oneofthegoodguys (POST 4) may drift in the wagering and offer value.

Longshots

Fine Diamond (POST 5) at 15-1 is trained by Ernesto Padilla-Preciado and ridden by Silvestre Gonzalez. At 15-1 in an allowance field, this horse faces a significant class or form challenge. Manseeyasway (POST 6) at 12-1 is trained by Oscar Mancilla and ridden by Jorge Ruiz. Both longshots can be used as trifecta fills at minimal cost but are unlikely to factor in the top two positions.

Betting Strategy

The feature race presents the best multi-race wagering opportunities of the evening. The top win selection is Confiscated (POST 7) at 2-1 based on trainer and jockey, while the best value plays are Whisper Roar (POST 2) and Showtime Matinee (POST 1) in the exacta. Exacta: 7 over 1 and 2, and 1 over 7 and 2. Trifecta: 7 with 1/2/3/4 with 1/2/3/4. If you want to take a stand with a value play, a win bet on Showtime Matinee (POST 1) at 3-1 from the rail makes logical sense.

Selections

Win: Confiscated (POST 7) Place: Showtime Matinee (POST 1) Show: Whisper Roar (POST 2)

RACE 6 — Post (8:10)/7:10/6:10/5:10 — 1320f | D | CO | OClm 25000 | BUM | Purse $24,000

A mile optional claimer at $25,000 for fillies and mares with a $24,000 purse. Seven horses are entered, and this race features a pronounced trainer presence from Bob Wolfe Jr., who saddles two runners, and Brandon Kulp, who also sends two horses. When the same trainer has multiple entries in a race, identifying the barn's preferred runner is a significant handicapping angle.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

Vino Amore (POST 7) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite and should be prominent early. Decree And Declare (POST 2) at 3-1 is also from the Kulp barn, along with Blast Of Mischief (POST 1). With two Kulp horses in the race, the pace could be influenced by their combined presence. Reckless Spending (POST 3) at 4-1 and Blast Of Mischief (POST 1) at 4-1 are both co-fourth choices who add pace pressure. In a seven-horse field at one mile with multiple speed horses, the fractions could get fast early and set up for a closer, though Vino Amore (POST 7) at 2-1 suggests she is the class of this field regardless of pace.

Key Contenders

Vino Amore (POST 7) at 2-1 is trained by Bob Wolfe Jr. and ridden by Yabriel Ramos. This is the second Wolfe entrant in the race alongside Cohesive (POST 6). The 2-1 morning line on Vino Amore (POST 7) indicates she is the stable's primary runner and the most likely candidate for a strong betting effort. Ramos is a capable jockey and the seven post in a one-mile race for mares should not be problematic. She is the top choice.

Decree And Declare (POST 2) at 3-1 is the preferred Kulp runner at 3-1, while Blast Of Mischief (POST 1) at 4-1 is the secondary Kulp entry. In a two-horse barn situation, the lower odds typically indicate the trainer's preferred horse and the one more likely to receive the better ride. With Torres aboard Decree And Declare (POST 2), the connections are clearly aligned behind this runner. The two post is excellent and Torres knows how to win from inside posts at Penn National.

Secondary Choices

Reckless Spending (POST 3) at 4-1 is trained by Elisha Rathman and ridden by Julio Hernandez. At 4-1 in a competitive optional claimer for mares, this horse represents value if the pace sets up correctly. Rathman is a capable conditioner and Hernandez can get her into a good early position from the three post. Blast Of Mischief (POST 1) at 4-1 is the second Kulp entry and draws the rail. While Decree And Declare (POST 2) is the likely preferred runner, Blast Of Mischief (POST 1) cannot be dismissed entirely as the inside post gives Rodriguez options.

Cohesive (POST 6) at 5-1 is the second Wolfe entry, trained by Bob Wolfe Jr. and ridden by Angel Quinones. As the second choice from the Wolfe barn at 5-1 versus Vino Amore (POST 7) at 2-1, she is clearly the lesser preferred by connections but could run a solid race and complicate exacta wagering.

Longshots

Tejas Express (POST 4) at 15-1 is trained by Lydee Shea and ridden by Wilfredo Corujo. The 15-1 price on a horse ridden by a capable jockey like Corujo raises questions about whether there is a confidence issue from connections. Irish Love Song (POST 5) at 12-1 is trained by Flint Stites and ridden by Maicol Inirio. Both are longshots who can fill in trifecta tickets at minimal cost.

Betting Strategy

The key wagering angle here is the trainer coupling between Kulp and Wolfe. Use Decree And Declare (POST 2) over Vino Amore (POST 7) as the primary exacta. Reverse that for coverage. Trifecta: 2 and 7 over 1/3 over 1/3/6.

Selections

Win: Vino Amore (POST 7) Place: Decree And Declare (POST 2) Show: Reckless Spending (POST 3)

RACE 7 — Post (8:39)/7:39/6:39/5:39 — 1760f | D | M | Md 10000 | BUN | Purse $16,000

The nightcap is a mile-and-a-sixteenth maiden claimer at $10,000 for a mixed field of eight horses. Maiden claimers at this level are notoriously difficult to handicap, as horses are trying to break their maiden at a price that reflects limited ability or inconsistency. The key angles in this race are current form, connections, and workout pattern.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Soo Handsome (POST 1) at 3-1 is the morning line favorite and breaking from the rail in a route. Apollo Eleven (POST 8) at 2-1 is the second choice and draws the eight post, the widest in the field. With the two most-favored horses on opposite ends of the starting gate, the pace scenario is interesting. If Apollo Eleven (POST 8) uses early speed from the outside to clear to the lead, he could wire this field, but from post eight in a route, that usually requires a significant burning of early energy. Soo Handsome (POST 1) from the rail can rate comfortably early and time his run for the stretch. A contested pace could benefit Rippin (POST 4) at 4-1 as a stalker type.

Key Contenders

Apollo Eleven (POST 8) at 2-1 is trained by Michael Stidham and ridden by Hunter Rea. Stidham is by far the most accomplished trainer in this field, with a resume that extends well beyond the Penn National circuit. When a trainer of Stidham's caliber places a horse at this maiden claiming level, it typically means the horse has talent that has been difficult to unlock, or the connections are determined to get the maiden tag off. At 2-1, the horse is clearly well-regarded by the book and deserves to be the top choice despite the outside post.

Soo Handsome (POST 1) at 3-1 is trained by Beverly Strauss and ridden by Paul Luna. The rail post is favorable in a route and at 3-1 this horse is clearly on the morning line as one of the two primary contenders. Luna is not among the top colony riders at Penn National, but in a maiden claimer, a capable horse from the inside post can compensate for jockey ability.

Secondary Choices

Rippin (POST 4) at 4-1 is trained by Mark Salvaggio and ridden by Jomar Torres. The four post is solid in a route and Torres aboard a 4-1 shot in the nightcap is a strong angle. Salvaggio is consistently competitive at Penn National and Torres will know how to position Rippin (POST 4) for a run in the stretch. This is the best value play in the race at 4-1 with the top jockey on the card.

Nonstop Flight (POST 6) at 8-1 is trained by Erin McClellan and ridden by Inoel Beato. McClellan has been solid throughout the meet and at 8-1 with a capable jockey, Nonstop Flight (POST 6) is a legitimate trifecta contender. Vignon Manor (POST 7) at 8-1 is trained by Kevin Boniface and ridden by Taylor Kingsley. At 8-1, this horse is interesting as Boniface has shown an ability to place horses competitively.

Christ Is King (POST 5) at 8-1 is trained by Bruce Kravets and ridden by D. Cora. The five post is workable in a route and at 8-1 this horse offers value if form is close to the top choices. Include in trifecta coverage.

Longshots

Whataguyoughtado (POST 2) at 20-1 is trained by Todd Beattie and ridden by Angel Cruz. At 20-1, this horse is an extreme longshot but in a $10,000 maiden claimer, the field is limited in overall ability. Lucky Double Zero (POST 3) at 15-1 is trained by Sandee Beattie and ridden by Yabriel Ramos. The Beattie family has entries in multiple races tonight and Lucky Double Zero (POST 3) is the longest-priced of the group but Ramos in the saddle gives him a capable pilot. Both can be used as trifecta fills.

Betting Strategy

Rippin (POST 4) at 4-1 with Torres in the irons represents the best win value in the nightcap. Apollo Eleven (POST 8) at 2-1 is the logical favorite based on trainer class. Exacta: box 4, 1, and 8. Trifecta: 4 and 8 over 1/6 over 1/5/6/7.

Selections

Win: Rippin (POST 4) Place: Apollo Eleven (POST 8) Show: Soo Handsome (POST 1)

Jockey Notes and Insights

Jomar Torres is the clear standout in tonight's Penn National jockey colony. He holds mounts in Races 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7, making him the busiest and most prominent rider on the card. Torres has the key book tonight, with trainer Kathlee Crook-Demasi trusting him in multiple spots, and he also has the feature mount on Confiscated (POST 7) in Race 5. When Torres has a mount at or near the morning line favorites at Penn National, the strike rate is consistently strong, and his presence on a horse should upgrade that animal's chances regardless of odds.

Angel Rodriguez (referred to in the program as Rodriguez Angel R) has five mounts tonight for trainer Brandon Kulp, including Shining Spirit (POST 5) in Race 1, Gins And Tins (POST 7) in Race 3, Uninvited Guest (POST 4) in Race 4, Whisper Roar (POST 2) in Race 5, and Blast Of Mischief (POST 1) in Race 6. The Kulp/Rodriguez partnership is the busiest trainer-jockey duo on tonight's card and their horses have been consistently fit and competitive at Penn National. When this combination saddles a horse at or near even money, the win percentage is strong.

Wilfredo Corujo has important mounts in Race 3 on Valore (POST 8), Race 4 on Debate (POST 3), Race 5 on Showtime Matinee (POST 1), and Race 6 on Tejas Express (POST 4). Corujo is a seasoned veteran of the Penn National oval and is one of the most competent route riders in this colony. His mount on Showtime Matinee (POST 1) in the feature is worth particular attention.

Inoel Beato appears in Races 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7, with key assignments on Octet (POST 1) in Race 2, Curious Soul (POST 5) in Race 3, Ocala Dream (POST 5) in Race 4, Oneofthegoodguys (POST 4) in Race 5, and Nonstop Flight (POST 6) in Race 7. Beato has been consistent throughout the Penn National meet and is particularly effective on turf, which bodes well for his Race 2 and Race 3 assignments.

Yabriel Ramos has mounts throughout the card including Queen Wiggy (POST 2) in Race 1, Gentle Breeze (POST 6) in Race 3, Vino Amore (POST 7) in Race 6, and Lucky Double Zero (POST 3) in Race 7. His assignment on Vino Amore (POST 7) in Race 6 is the strongest of the group, and he is a capable pilot who performs well at this level.

Hunter Rea is the designated rider for Apollo Eleven (POST 8) in Race 7, the lone mount from trainer Michael Stidham. Rea's connection to Stidham's operation is a positive angle in the nightcap.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Brandon Kulp is the most active trainer on tonight's card by number of entries, with horses in six of eight races. He saddles Shining Spirit (POST 5) in Race 1, Gins And Tins (POST 7) in Race 3, Uninvited Guest (POST 4) in Race 4, Whisper Roar (POST 2) in Race 5, and both Blast Of Mischief (POST 1) and Decree And Declare (POST 2) in Race 6. Kulp's consistent presence and ability to keep horses fit and ready throughout a meet is a hallmark of his operation. When he has a horse as the morning line favorite, the investment is often well-placed. The double entry in Race 6 is the most interesting Kulp angle of the evening.

Kathlee Crook-Demasi has four entries tonight across Races 2, 3, 5, and 6, all with Jomar Torres up in key spots. She is clearly the top trainer with Jomar Torres connections on this card. Her entries include MUSIC CLARIFICATION (POST 2) in Race 2, Harbor Of Gold (POST 9) in Race 3, and Confiscated (POST 7) in the feature, Race 5. When this trainer saddles a horse as a morning line favorite or near the top of the board with Torres, the win rate is above average for this circuit.

Bob Wolfe Jr. saddles horses in multiple races tonight, including Debate (POST 3) in Race 4 and Cohesive (POST 6) and Vino Amore (POST 7) in Race 6. The double entry in Race 6 with Vino Amore (POST 7) as the clear 2-1 preferred runner is an important handicapping clue. When trainers run two horses in the same race, the odds structure typically tells the story of which horse is the live one.

Michael Stidham's lone entry on tonight's card is Apollo Eleven (POST 8) in Race 7. Stidham's name is a clear class upgrade at this level of racing and when a trainer of his caliber places a horse at the $10,000 maiden claiming level, there is typically a plan in place to break the maiden and potentially move up in class afterward.

Cody Beattie has two entries in the feature race in Race 5 — Showtime Matinee (POST 1) with Corujo and Oneofthegoodguys (POST 4) with Beato. The differential odds, with Showtime Matinee (POST 1) at 3-1 and Oneofthegoodguys (POST 4) at 5-1, suggests connections lean toward their rail runner as the primary betting interest.

Bruce Kravets saddles horses in Races 3, 4, 5, and 7, including a double entry in Race 3 with Gentle Breeze (POST 6) and Great Kisser (POST 10). His horses have been competitive at Penn National and represent solid value throughout the card, particularly at the 8-1 and higher prices.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The Penn National Thursday evening card presents several strong exotic wagering opportunities, most notably through the Pick 4 and Pick 5 structures. Below is a breakdown of the best plays across the card.

The single best win bet of the evening is Rippin (POST 4) in Race 7 at 4-1. The combination of trainer Mark Salvaggio, jockey Jomar Torres, a solid middle post in a route race, and a field of maiden claimers that includes at least one horse with a significant post position disadvantage makes Rippin (POST 4) an outstanding value at his morning line price.

The second-best win play is Octet (POST 1) in Race 2 at 5-1. The combination of the best turf post in a nine-horse field and a capable jockey in Inoel Beato makes this horse a legitimate overlay against the 1-1 morning line favorite.

For the Pick 4 covering Races 4 through 7, consider the following structure:

Race 4: DEBATE (POST 3) and UNINVITED GUEST (POST 4)

Race 5: CONFISCATED (POST 7) and SHOWTIME MATINEE (POST 1)

Race 6: VINO AMORE (POST 7) and DECREE AND DECLARE (POST 2)

Race 7: RIPPIN (POST 4) and APOLLO ELEVEN (POST 8)

Using two horses in each leg creates a 16-combination Pick 4 that covers the most likely outcomes based on the morning line. The cost at a $0.50 base is $8.00, which is a reasonable investment for a four-race sequence that includes several horses at competitive prices.

For the Pick 5 covering Races 3 through 7:

Race 3: MADE TO HUSTLE (POST 4) and GINS AND TINS (POST 7)

Race 4: DEBATE (POST 3) and UNINVITED GUEST (POST 4)

Race 5: CONFISCATED (POST 7) and SHOWTIME MATINEE (POST 1)

Race 6: VINO AMORE (POST 7) and DECREE AND DECLARE (POST 2)

Race 7: RIPPIN (POST 4) and APOLLO ELEVEN (POST 8)

That creates a 32-combination Pick 5 at $0.50 base for $16.00. The sequence includes competitive prices and multiple trainer-jockey angles that support the selections.

The best exacta value on the card is Race 2, using Octet (POST 1) over MUSIC CLARIFICATION (POST 2) and Ballykeefe (POST 6). If Octet (POST 1) wins at 5-1 and the favorite runs second, the exacta should return a fair price. If Octet (POST 1) wins and one of the longer-priced horses fills the place, the return could be substantial.

In Race 6, the trainer double-entry angle on both the Kulp barn and the Wolfe barn makes the exacta box of Vino Amore (POST 7) and Decree And Declare (POST 2) an interesting play. Two different trainers each have their preferred runner entered, and the most likely exacta involves those two horses in either order.

The best trifecta value of the evening is Race 7, where the nightcap field of maiden claimers at $10,000 has a wide range of abilities and the presence of trainer Michael Stidham's Apollo Eleven (POST 8) at 2-1 as a form standout means exotic payouts could be generous if either Soo Handsome (POST 1) or Rippin (POST 4) sneaks into the place or show slots at prices above their morning line.
