Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Churchill Downs, October 29, 2026
Track Surface & Bias
Churchill Downs' dirt course should favor speed and tactical positioning if it remains fast or only mildly affected by moisture, with inside-to-middle posts offering efficient ground-saving trips. Front-runners and stalkers are generally preferable, while deep closers may need a strong pace and a clean outside run. The turf course should reward horses able to secure position near the rail without being trapped, with stalkers typically holding an advantage over wide-running closers.
Handicapper’s Edge
Give extra weight to horses with proven Churchill Downs form, tactical speed, and the ability to handle either a firm turf course or a drying dirt surface. Downgrade wide posts that require sustained early exertion, but remain alert for closers if the dirt becomes tiring or the pace turns unusually fast.
