Santa Anita Park — Race Day Overview: Saturday, June 6, 2026

Today's card at Santa Anita Park is a 10-race program headlined by the $100,000 Honeymoon Stakes (Listed), a one-mile turf route for older fillies and mares. The card spans a wide range of conditions from maiden special weights on turf and dirt to claiming races at multiple levels, with the Honeymoon providing the prestige anchor in Race 8. Saturday's program also features the return of guest announcer Pete Aiello in the booth, with regular voice Frank Mirahmadi on assignment at Saratoga for the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival — a reminder that the national spotlight is fixed on the Spa this weekend, but Santa Anita offers its own compelling opportunities for sharp players.

Phil D'Amato enters the day as the trainer to watch, with four horses in the Honeymoon alone — Kintrigue (POST 1), Inbox (POST 2), Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3), and Darya (POST 6) — plus Goodies (POST 1) in the opener and Maury Wills (POST 4) in Race 4. When D'Amato fires a full barn like this, particularly in a stakes race where he saddles the morning line favorite's stablemates, combinatorial betting strategy becomes essential. Joel Rosario rides multiple horses throughout the card for a variety of top stables, which speaks to his strong book today.

Dean Keppler of In the Money has flagged Prince Dolce (POST 2) in Race 4 as his Best Bet of the day, a selection that carries significant weight given the source's track record at Santa Anita.

The meet continues to roll with solid handle and competitive fields. Players making the trip to the paddock and apron at 285 W. Huntington Drive should arrive early to observe warmups and watch the first few races for real-time surface reads.

Weather Forecast and Track Conditions

The Los Angeles basin is experiencing the typical June gloom pattern that characterizes early summer at Santa Anita. Expect overcast morning skies with marine layer clouds potentially lingering into the early afternoon before partially clearing. Temperatures should be mild, ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s Fahrenheit, with light winds out of the west-southwest. No rain is anticipated for the racing surface.

The main track at Santa Anita is expected to be rated fast, having had no significant precipitation in recent days. The turf course, which sees action in Races 1, 4, 6, 8, and 10, is anticipated to be rated firm or good-to-firm, though the marine layer humidity in recent mornings can hold slight moisture in the grass. The turf course has been reported in excellent condition through the current meet. Any late-breaking official track variant announcements should be confirmed at the paddock prior to wagering on turf races.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Santa Anita's main track in its standard fast configuration has historically shown a slight speed bias, particularly at sprint distances. The one-turn mile (1760f, or one mile) on the main track can favor horses that break alertly and establish position in the first turn, especially from the inside three posts. At the six-furlong diStance (1320f), inside speed often holds, as the long run to the first turn at Santa Anita does favor horses with early foot who can establish the rail.

On the turf course, the nine-furlong course (1760f) run for the Honeymoon tends to reward stalkers and closers when the turf is firm, as late pace is rewarded by the downhill section that feeds into the stretch. At sprint turf distances (1430f on the inner course used for Races 1 and 10), outside posts can be a disadvantage in fields this size, particularly in maiden and lower-level claiming company where horses are still learning to settle.

Post position data from recent Santa Anita turf sprints on the inner course suggests that posts 3 through 7 have fared best, with the far outside draws giving up ground early. On the main track dirt routes, the inside rail can be a benefit in early running, though horses that get shuffled back in one-turn mile races with large fields tend to have shorter winning windows.

Players should monitor the first few races closely for any emerging bias, particularly whether front-runners are holding or if closers are making meaningful late runs from off the pace. With the marine layer present, a slightly softer turf surface could actually assist late runners in the Honeymoon.

RACE 1 — Post 4:00 PM — 1430f | Turf | Straight | Maiden Special Weight | Purse $65,000

Fillies and mares, maiden special weight on the inner turf course at 1430f (just under seven furlongs on the straight). This is a nine-horse field featuring several first-time-out prospects and horses with limited records. The distance, a straight-course turf sprint, rewards horses that can find a comfortable rhythm without the aid of a turn and typically plays to horses with good tactical speed.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

With Goodies (POST 1) having shown solid early speed in her debut and Somerset West (POST 5) likely to be forwardly placed with Rosario, the early pace scenario suggests a two-way split with a moderate to fast early fraction. Velvet Reign (POST 6) has tactical versatility under the Callaghan-Hernandez combination. Seeking Attention (POST 9) breaks from the widest viable post and may need to use early energy to get position, which could play into the hands of a stalker.

Key Contenders

Goodies (POST 1): The D'Amato trainee flashed sharp speed in her debut on May 9 at a grass sprint distance, earning a respectable figure before tiring to third. First-time-out efforts for D'Amato on turf are always to be respected, and the fact that she posted a solid speed figure while still finding late traffic indicates she should benefit from the added experience. Hector Isaac Berrios gets the call, and the inside post in a straight-course race is not a hindrance here. The 2-1 morning line reflects consensus support.

Somerset West (POST 5): Saddled by John Sadler, one of the most accomplished turf conditioners in Southern California, and ridden by Joel Rosario, who is having a productive meet. Sadler's maiden turf runners frequently improve significantly off the first effort, and this horse at 2-1 alongside Goodies (POST 1) suggests the public is split between the two. The post 5 draw in the straight course is workable. Watch the morning line for any movement that indicates support.

Secondary Choices

Tiz Alluring (POST 4): Richard Baltas has a history of patient development with his turf runners, and Jaramillo gets a live mount here at 4-1. Post 4 is a favorable draw in straight-course turf sprints, and if Tiz Alluring (POST 4) has shown any ability in the morning, Baltas will have her ready.

Velvet Reign (POST 6): Simon Callaghan conditions this one for Juan Hernandez. At 6-1, there is overlay potential if Velvet Reign (POST 6) has been working with purpose. Callaghan's turf runners tend to be fit on debut or early in their campaigns.

Seeking Attention (POST 9): Peter Eurton's 6-1 entry draws the outside post, which is somewhat disadvantageous in a straight-course sprint where ground loss is immediate. However, Eurton knows the Southern California turf game well, and if Seeking Attention (POST 9) has tactical speed, she can overcome the post.

Longshots

I'll Be Your Baby (POST 2) and Natural Diamond (POST 3) are both trained by Patrick Gallagher, a lower-profile conditioner at the meet, with both listed at 30-1. It would be extraordinary for either to hit the board, though in a contentious maiden field with pace scenarios uncertain, a long-priced Gallagher runner is not impossible.

Decisive Deception (POST 7) from the Neil Drysdale barn at 30-1 deserves a footnote — Drysdale is a Hall of Fame trainer who rarely runs a hopeless animal. If Decisive Deception (POST 7) has been working secretly, the 30-1 may be manufactured. However, without corroborating workout data pointing to a sharp figure, this is a pass.

Kinzlee'scharisma (POST 8) is trained by Daniel Jensen and ridden by T.C. Baze at 20-1. Jensen's operation is small but occasionally surfaces a live runner. Baze is an experienced hand who can get a grass route performance from an unlikely source.

Selections

Win: Goodies (POST 1) Place: Somerset West (POST 5) Show: Tiz Alluring (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: Given the co-favorite scenario with Goodies (POST 1) and Somerset West (POST 5) both at 2-1, the exacta box of these two may offer only marginal value at likely short prices. Consider single-up on Goodies (POST 1) to win and play the exacta 1-5 and 5-1. If Tiz Alluring (POST 4) is available at 4-1 on the board, mixing a 1-4 or 4-1 exacta provides a reasonable return. Pass the trifecta in a race this thin on data.

RACE 2 — Post 4:30 PM — 1760f | Dirt | Straight | Maiden Special Weight | Purse $65,000

One mile on the main track, maiden special weight for horses that have not won, fillies and mares. Six-horse field for a dirt route, which means smaller fields and cleaner trips for most runners. The distance suits horses that have shown some stamina in their prep works or previous route attempts.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

Proud Racer (POST 1) is the lone morning line favorite at even money, and with that kind of support and the rail post in a one-mile dirt route, she is likely to be sent to the front or near it by Juan Hernandez. Low Tox (POST 6) from Papaprodromou may have enough tactical speed to press, but six-horse fields often see moderate early fractions. Hungover (POST 5) with Rosario is positioned to stalk. The pace is expected to be moderate, suiting the front-runner or a well-placed stalker.

Key Contenders

Proud Racer (POST 1): The Peter Miller trainee at even money with Juan Hernandez is the clear public choice. Miller is one of the elite trainers in the country across all surfaces and distances, and his success rate with maiden dirt routes is strong. The rail post in a six-horse field gives Proud Racer (POST 1) first run at the front, and if she has the ability that her odds reflect, the one-mile distance should suit.

Van Gogh Style (POST 4): Sean McCarthy conditions this 4-1 shot for T.C. Baze, who rides with excellent tactical awareness in dirt routes. If Proud Racer (POST 1) gets away clean and establishes a clear lead, Van Gogh Style (POST 4) could track in second and overhaul if the favorite weakens.

Secondary Choices

Hungover (POST 5): Ryan Hanson and Joel Rosario at 5-1 in a maiden dirt route. Rosario's presence elevates any horse in this field, and Hanson has placed his runners competitively this meet. If Hungover (POST 5) has the physical tools for the one-mile distance, a stalking trip behind Proud Racer (POST 1) could produce a late run.

Low Tox (POST 6): George Papaprodromou at 5-1 in a maiden is an interesting angle. Papaprodromou has developed a reputation at Santa Anita for knowing exactly when to point a horse for a specific spot. Low Tox (POST 6) with Maldonado from the outside post in a six-horse field means she will need to be used early to establish a position, but if she handles the stretching-out in distance, she is a contender.

Longshots

Ottis Betts (POST 3): Ronald Ellis trains this 6-1 shot with Armando Ayuso up. Ellis runs horses at multiple levels throughout the meet and occasionally finds the right spot. At 6-1 in a thin maiden field, Ottis Betts (POST 3) is not an impossible play if the price persists.

Its The Bandit (POST 2): Brian Cunningham at 20-1 with Kyle Frey is likely the deep outsider of this field. Without compelling workout data pointing toward a hot figure, the price is probably fair.

Selections

Win: Proud Racer (POST 1) Place: Van Gogh Style (POST 4) Show: Hungover (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: Even-money favorites in small maiden fields are capital killers in terms of return on investment. The better play is the exacta 1-4 and 1-5, which should pay a mild premium over the straight win bet. An exacta box of 4-5 as a backup with Proud Racer (POST 1) failing is a reasonable small investment.

RACE 3 — Post 5:00 PM — 1320f | Dirt | Allowance Optional Claiming | One-Win Horses | Purse $67,000

Six furlongs on the main track, open allowance optional claiming $50,000 for non-winners of a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter. This is the first condition allowance of the day and brings a more experienced field than the maiden events preceding it. Six horses, which makes pace analysis somewhat cleaner.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Red Flag (POST 1) from the Jeff Mullins barn with Tiago Pereira is co-favorited at 2-1, suggesting she has early speed ability and draws the rail at six furlongs — a favorable position for a horse with gate ability at Santa Anita. Santarena (POST 4) is the other 2-1 co-favorite with Rosario, and if she is a more pressing style, the two favorites may set up a contested early pace. Comedy Town (POST 5) at 4-1 from Papaprodromou may press or stalk. Six-horse field at six furlongs means most horses will be in striking position throughout.

Key Contenders

Red Flag (POST 1): Jeff Mullins is a consistent top-tier trainer at Santa Anita with excellent numbers in allowance sprint company. Tiago Pereira is a reliable jockey for this level, and the rail post at six furlongs favors early movers. At 2-1, the price is fair for a horse in a six-horse field with a top trainer and a productive jockey.

Santarena (POST 4): Mark Glatt with Joel Rosario at 2-1 is a formidable combination. Glatt is a meticulous trainer who rarely runs a horse unless it is ready, and Santarena (POST 4) in post 4 of a six-horse sprint is an ideal draw. The fact that Rosario took the mount suggests connections feel strongly.

Secondary Choices

Captivator (POST 2): John Sadler at 4-1 with Jaramillo has tactical flexibility at six furlongs. Sadler's allowance runners tend to be fit and competitive, and Captivator (POST 2) from post 2 is well-positioned to track the leaders and make a run.

Comedy Town (POST 5): Papaprodromou at 4-1 is interesting given his track record of placing horses in the right spot. Comedy Town (POST 5) with Berrios from post 5 in a six-horse sprint is workable, and if either of the two favorites is overbet, Comedy Town (POST 5) represents the best value in the secondary tier.

Longshots

Canani (POST 6): Librado Barocio with Kyle Frey at 10-1 from the outside post. In a six-horse sprint, post 6 does not require excessive early energy to establish position. Barocio's win percentage in allowance races is modest, but at 10-1, a small investment in the trifecta makes sense.

I'm A Bad Boy (POST 3): Luis Mendez at 12-1 with Maldonado. This is a significant overlay price in a six-horse field if the morning line is soft, though 12-1 reflects the public's assessment of the horse's prospects. Toss unless late scratch information changes the complexion of the field.

Selections

Win: Santarena (POST 4) Place: Red Flag (POST 1) Show: Captivator (POST 2)

Betting Strategy: With two co-favorites at 2-1, the exacta 4-1 and 1-4 is the play. This race sets up as a two-horse battle, and the trifecta key of 4 and 1 over Captivator (POST 2) and Comedy Town (POST 5) provides reasonable coverage. If Comedy Town (POST 5) opens at 6-1 or better on the board, it becomes a trifecta player.

RACE 4 — Post 5:30 PM — 1760f | Turf | Allowance Optional Claiming | One-Win Horses | Purse $67,000

One mile on the turf, allowance optional claiming $20,000 for non-winners of a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter. Nine-horse field on the inner turf course. This is the race where the day's consensus Best Bet resides, per handicapping analysis: Prince Dolce (POST 2).

Race 4

Pace Analysis

Prince Dolce (POST 2) from the Steve Knapp barn with Ricardo Gonzalez and Bro Bro (POST 9) from Doug O'Neill with Hernandez are the morning line leaders at 2-1 and 3-1 respectively. One-mile turf routes with nine horses tend to produce a moderate early pace as jockeys navigate the first turn before the field strings out. Nineteenth Hole (POST 3) under Rosario from Tim Yakteen could factor in the pace, as could Matt At Five (POST 5) from Peter Miller with Berrios. The Sadler-trained Stylishlyacclaimed (POST 1) with Jaramillo from the rail presents a pace question in a larger field.

Key Contenders

Prince Dolce (POST 2): The consensus Best Bet of the day from multiple handicapping services. Steve Knapp is a strong turf trainer with winning percentages that climb sharply in allowance company, and Ricardo Gonzalez has been productive at this meet. Post 2 on the inner turf course at one mile is an excellent draw — inside enough to save ground but not buried on the rail in traffic. The 2-1 morning line likely underestimates the win probability given the quality of the spot and the trainer's recent form. This is the race's most heavily played horse for good reason.

Bro Bro (POST 9): Doug O'Neill at 3-1 with Juan Hernandez from post 9 in a nine-horse turf mile. O'Neill is a major player at Santa Anita with high-percentage rates across conditions, and the outside post in a turf mile is not ideal, though Hernandez has the experience to navigate a wide trip and conserve energy. This is the primary danger to Prince Dolce (POST 2).

Secondary Choices

Matt At Five (POST 5): Peter Miller at 4-1 with Berrios is a serious contender. Miller's turf runners are well-prepared, and post 5 in a nine-horse mile is a workable position. If Prince Dolce (POST 2) and Bro Bro (POST 9) set up a two-horse battle, Matt At Five (POST 5) stalking through the turn could be a beneficiary.

Stylishlyacclaimed (POST 1): Carla Gaines at 5-1 with Jaramillo from the rail. The inside post on the inner turf course at one mile can be a double-edged sword — ideal if the horse gets out cleanly, problematic in traffic on the turn. Gaines is a capable conditioner and at 5-1, Stylishlyacclaimed (POST 1) merits inclusion in exotics.

Longshots

Jimmy Blue Jeans (POST 7): Librado Barocio at 10-1 with Frey. Worth including in trifecta coverage at this price in a nine-horse turf field.

Maury Wills (POST 4): The D'Amato trainee at 12-1 with Ayuso. D'Amato horses always get a second look regardless of price, but 12-1 in a nine-horse AOC turf mile suggests the horse faces a class or form question.

Highplainsdrifter (POST 6): Mike Puype at 12-1 with Orantes. Difficult to recommend at this price without a clear angle.

Nineteenth Hole (POST 3): Tim Yakteen at 15-1 with Rosario is interesting only because Rosario does not often take throwaway mounts. However, 15-1 is a steep price that implies a significant gap in class or form. Trifecta only.

Creative Om (POST 8): Aggie Ordonez at 30-1. Pass.

Selections

Win: Prince Dolce (POST 2) Place: Bro Bro (POST 9) Show: Matt At Five (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: Prince Dolce (POST 2) is the day's strongest single. Win bet is primary. The exacta 2-9 and 2-5 make sense. For trifecta, key Prince Dolce (POST 2) on top over Bro Bro (POST 9) and Matt At Five (POST 5), then add Stylishlyacclaimed (POST 1) and Jimmy Blue Jeans (POST 7) in the third slot for coverage. A five-horse trifecta wheel anchored by Prince Dolce (POST 2) on top provides strong coverage at a manageable ticket cost.

RACE 5 — Post 6:04 PM — 1210f | Dirt | Straight | Maiden Special Weight | Purse $65,000

Six furlongs on the main track, maiden special weight for males. Eight-horse field. This is a male maiden sprint, which typically produces competitive pace questions given that colts and geldings in maiden company frequently break sharp and establish early duels.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

Confidence Man (POST 3) from Brian Koriner at 2-1 with Ayuso is the morning line favorite. Forever Ben (POST 2) at 3-1 from Sean McCarthy with Baze will likely be positioned near the lead. What Has Been (POST 7) from Edward Freeman at 5-1 with Frey could press or stalk. If Confidence Man (POST 3) and Forever Ben (POST 2) establish an early duel, closers like Zakiel (POST 8) from Eurton could benefit.

Key Contenders

Confidence Man (POST 3): Brian Koriner's 2-1 morning line favorite with Armando Ayuso. Post 3 is a good draw in a maiden sprint, sitting just inside center and giving Ayuso a clean early look. The public's support at this level suggests either strong workout data or a debut runner with impressive training works.

Forever Ben (POST 2): Sean McCarthy is quietly one of the more solid lower-profile trainers at the meet, and T.C. Baze is an excellent fit for a dirt sprint from post 2. At 3-1, Forever Ben (POST 2) is the clear second choice and a legitimate win threat if Confidence Man (POST 3) has any vulnerability.

Secondary Choices

Positive Times (POST 4): Ryan Hanson at 5-1 with Maldonado from post 4. The mid-field draw in a sprint is workable, and Maldonado has been solid this meet. This is a horse that becomes more interesting if the morning line compresses the top two choices significantly.

What Has Been (POST 7): Edward Freeman at 5-1 with Frey from post 7. In a straight-course sprint, post 7 is not too wide to be a handicap. Frey is a competent rider in sprint conditions and Freeman occasionally surfaces a live runner. At the right price, What Has Been (POST 7) is an exacta player.

Zakiel (POST 8): Peter Eurton at 6-1 with Cesar Belmont from the outside post. Eurton's maiden runners tend to show up ready, and if the pace up front gets contested between Confidence Man (POST 3) and Forever Ben (POST 2), Zakiel (POST 8) tracking in a clear stalking position could close powerfully. The outside post in a straight sprint is the only real concern.

Longshots

He's Proof Of Joy (POST 1): Alberto Ruvalcaba at 12-1 with Cristobal Herrera. The rail post in a sprint can either be a benefit or a trap. Without strong workout support, this is a pass to win.

Proof He Goes (POST 6): Also from the Ruvalcaba barn at 15-1 with Francisco Monroy. Two runners from the same small barn at long odds is a thinning of talent. Pass.

He Got Lit (POST 5): Val Brinkerhoff at 30-1 with Alfredo Bautista. The price says it all.

Selections

Win: Confidence Man (POST 3) Place: Forever Ben (POST 2) Show: Zakiel (POST 8)

Betting Strategy: The top two are the race. Exacta box 3-2 is the primary investment. Add Zakiel (POST 8) into trifecta combinations behind the top two — key 3 and 2 on top, Zakiel (POST 8) third. The value angle is Zakiel (POST 8) in the exacta underneath either favorite if one of the top two gets into early trouble.

RACE 6 — Post 6:35 PM — 1320f | Turf | Claiming $25,000 | Purse $27,000

Six furlongs on the turf, claiming $25,000 for fillies and mares. Twelve-horse field, which creates a complicated pace and trip scenario. A full field of twelve in a turf sprint at this level is a bettor's puzzle — the pace will be contested, traffic is almost guaranteed, and the race frequently falls to a horse that finds the right trip through the chaos.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

With twelve horses in a six-furlong turf sprint, the early fractions will likely be moderately fast as several runners attempt to establish position. Lady Maryann (POST 5) from Gutierrez with Berrios, Preem (POST 8) from Michael McCarthy with Hernandez, and Empress Matilda (POST 9) from R.B. Hess Jr. with Desormeaux are the morning line co-favorites at 4-1, suggesting multiple pace shapes are possible. The widest posts — Cloudy Women (POST 11) at 5-1 and Keep The Pavels (POST 12) at 30-1 — will need to use energy early to establish position. Stalking trips from mid-field posts 4 through 7 may be optimal.

Key Contenders

Preem (POST 8): Michael McCarthy is a high-percentage trainer in claiming turf company, and Juan Hernandez is a strong rider from this post. At 4-1 in a twelve-horse field, the post is middling but manageable if Hernandez gets a clean break.

Empress Matilda (POST 9): R.B. Hess Jr. with Kent Desormeaux at 4-1. Desormeaux is a Hall of Fame rider whose experience in busy fields is invaluable. He has a remarkable ability to find gaps in traffic in turf sprints. Post 9 of twelve is a concern, but with Desormeaux in the irons, Empress Matilda (POST 9) can be forgiven the draw.

Lady Maryann (POST 5): Jorge Gutierrez with Berrios at 4-1 from post 5 in a twelve-horse turf sprint is the ideal post position among the co-favorites. Post 5 gives inside options without being buried on the rail, and Berrios has been active and competent this meet.

Secondary Choices

Cloudy Women (POST 11): At 5-1, this is the best-priced secondary option, trained by Sergio Morfin with Ayuso. Outside post is a concern, but at 5-1 in a large claiming turf field with a competitive morning line, Cloudy Women (POST 11) warrants inclusion in exotics.

Saariselka (POST 7): Carla Gaines at 8-1 with Ricardo Gonzalez from post 7. Gaines had Stylishlyacclaimed (POST 1) earlier in Race 4, and she is capable of placing horses well. Saariselka (POST 7) at 8-1 in a large turf sprint has overlay potential.

Someone Like You (POST 6): Brian Koriner at 8-1 with Orantes from post 6. Koriner had Confidence Man (POST 3) in Race 5, and he is active across the card today. Post 6 in a twelve-horse turf sprint is a viable spot.

Longshots

Rich Of Joy (POST 4): Victor Garcia at 12-1 with Lezcano from a solid post. In a twelve-horse field, any horse at double-digit odds that has the right post and a competent rider can hit the board. Worth a small trifecta investment.

Busy Making Munny (POST 10): Tim McCanna at 15-1 with Jaramillo from post 10. An outside post in a large turf sprint makes this difficult, despite Jaramillo's quality.

Pretty Cecy (POST 2): Victor Garcia at 20-1 with Rosario. The fact that Rosario accepted this mount is worth noting — he rarely takes throwaway rides. Rosario on a 20-1 in a claiming turf field could signal that he sees something in the horse's recent works or that connections believe the horse is dramatically better than her odds suggest. This is the most intriguing longshot angle on the card in Race 6.

Quick Omen (POST 1): Debbie Winick at 30-1 with Herrera. The rail in a twelve-horse turf sprint is problematic from a traffic standpoint.

Vronaway (POST 3): D. Wayne Baker at 30-1 with Garcia. Long shot.

Keep The Pavels (POST 12): Sally Rivera at 30-1 with Aguilar. Pass.

Selections

Win: Lady Maryann (POST 5) Place: Empress Matilda (POST 9) Show: Preem (POST 8)

Betting Strategy: In twelve-horse claiming turf sprints, the exotic approach is almost always superior to straight win wagering. A trifecta key using Lady Maryann (POST 5) and Empress Matilda (POST 9) as the top two, spread to Preem (POST 8), Saariselka (POST 7), Cloudy Women (POST 11), and Rich Of Joy (POST 4) in the third slot creates a manageable investment. The Pretty Cecy (POST 2) Rosario angle is worth a small win investment — if she pops at 20-1 on the board, the return justifies the risk.

RACE 7 — Post 7:20 PM — 1210f | Dirt | Claiming $5,000 | Purse $15,000

Six furlongs on the main track, claiming $5,000. The lowest claiming level of the day, a nine-horse field. Races at this level often feature older horses with physical limitations or chronic conditions that keep them running at the bottom of the claiming ladder. Speed figures tend to be modest and consistency is the exception rather than the rule.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Windribbon (POST 3) and Chasin Munny (POST 7) share the 2-1 morning line favoritism. If both are speed types, the early pace could be genuinely contested, creating opportunity for a horse that stalks from a comfortable position. Carol's Comic (POST 2) at 5-1 may have enough early foot to press. At the $5,000 claiming level, pace collapses are common.

Key Contenders

Windribbon (POST 3): Jose Hernandez Jr. at 2-1 with Ayuso from post 3. The co-favorite in this field, and post 3 in a nine-horse sprint is a solid position. Ayuso is a capable rider at this level.

Chasin Munny (POST 7): Librado Barocio at 2-1 with Joel Rosario is the more interesting of the two co-favorites. Rosario riding at the $5,000 claiming level is a significant signal — top riders typically don't accept bottom-level mounts unless something stands out. Chasin Munny (POST 7) with Rosario suggests the horse may be ready to fire a big race.

Secondary Choices

Carol's Comic (POST 2): Val Brinkerhoff at 5-1 with Jeremy Laprida from post 2. Brinkerhoff is a regular at the lower levels at Santa Anita and occasionally places a horse perfectly. Carol's Comic (POST 2) at 5-1 is a potential show investment.

Melanie's Tiger (POST 1): Manuel Badilla at 6-1 with Frey from the rail. Kyle Frey is well above the typical jockey associated with a $5,000 claimer, which is an angle worth noting.

Voucher (POST 5): Jorge Farias at 8-1 with Alfredo Bautista. Midfield draw at a manageable price — worth a trifecta ticket slot.

Longshots

Run Abboudy Run (POST 6): Jesus Uranga at 10-1 with Salvador Vargas. Pass.

Smarty Nose (POST 8): Sally Rivera at 15-1 with Armando Aguilar. Pass.

Devil Moon (POST 4): Ruben Gomez at 20-1 with Ali Husain. Pass.

Reef City (POST 9): Jeff Bonde at 30-1 with Cristobal Herrera. Pass.

Selections

Win: Chasin Munny (POST 7) Place: Windribbon (POST 3) Show: Carol's Comic (POST 2)

Betting Strategy: The Rosario angle on Chasin Munny (POST 7) is the primary story in this race. A modest win bet on Chasin Munny (POST 7) and an exacta 7-3 is the play. This is not a race to overinvest in from an exotic standpoint — $5,000 claiming races carry significant variance and unexpected outcomes are the norm.

RACE 8 — Post 7:51 PM — 1760f | Turf | Stakes | Honeymoon Listed $100,000 | Purse $100,000

One mile on the turf, the Honeymoon Stakes (Listed), for older fillies and mares. This is the feature race of the card. Ten-horse field with four Phil D'Amato trainees — Kintrigue (POST 1), Inbox (POST 2), Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3), and Darya (POST 6) — giving the trainer an overwhelming presence in the race.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

Light Won Up (POST 9) from Doug O'Neill at 2-1 morning line favorite with Hernandez is the public's top choice and sits in the second-best post draw in a ten-horse turf mile. Inbox (POST 2) with Rosario from D'Amato's barn at 4-1 is the primary stablemate threat. Lookin At Diamond (POST 8) from Leonard Powell at 6-1 with Espinoza adds a layer of intrigue from a mid-field post. The early pace in a one-mile turf route for stakes-caliber fillies and mares will likely be honest — not blazing, but sufficient to test horses that are fit but not firing at peak.

Key Contenders

Light Won Up (POST 9): The 2-1 morning line favorite from the O'Neill barn with Juan Hernandez. O'Neill is a Breeders' Cup-winning trainer who competes aggressively in stakes races at Santa Anita, and Light Won Up (POST 9) appears to have earned this spot through recent form. Post 9 of ten in a turf mile is not ideal, but Hernandez has the experience to find the right position.

Inbox (POST 2): Phil D'Amato's primary weapon in this field at 4-1 with Joel Rosario is the most dangerous of the four D'Amato starters. The barn has enormous firepower in this race — four of ten horses — which creates a training puzzle for bettors. When a trainer runs multiple horses, one typically emerges as the “true” intention. Inbox (POST 2) with Rosario, the second-best jockey associated with D'Amato's runners today, in post 2 is the logical candidate. Rosario does not ride second-best horses without reason.

Darya (POST 6): D'Amato at 5-1 with Berrios from post 6. Darya (POST 6) is another D'Amato runner that merits attention, especially at the 5-1 price. If D'Amato uses his four runners in a complementary pace strategy, Darya (POST 6) from post 6 could be the stalker that benefits from Kintrigue (POST 1) or Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3) pressing early.

Secondary Choices

Lookin At Diamond (POST 8): Leonard Powell with Victor Espinoza at 6-1 from post 8. Espinoza's presence on any horse in a stakes race at Santa Anita is a meaningful angle — he is Hall of Fame caliber and picks his spots carefully at this stage of his career. Lookin At Diamond (POST 8) at 6-1 may represent the best value among non-D'Amato horses in this field.

Wild Like The West (POST 7): Richard Baltas at 10-1 with Ayuso. Baltas is a solid turf conditioner and Wild Like The West (POST 7) from post 7 in a ten-horse turf mile is tractable. At double-digit odds in a stakes field, there is overlay potential if the horse has been training well.

Longshots

Revera (POST 10): John Sadler at 12-1 with Tiago Pereira from post 10. In a ten-horse turf mile, the outside post is the most challenging draw. Sadler's turf runners rarely run without purpose, and at 12-1, Revera (POST 10) is worth a small trifecta inclusion.

Lilo Lil (POST 4): Michael McCarthy at 15-1 with Jaramillo. McCarthy had several horses spread across the card today, and at 15-1 in stakes company, Lilo Lil (POST 4) is a deeper trifecta play.

Kintrigue (POST 1): D'Amato at 15-1 with Maldonado. The rail post in a ten-horse turf mile from Maldonado rather than the barn's top riders suggests Kintrigue (POST 1) is more of a pacemaking role or a lesser intended winner. Worth a small exacta/trifecta inclusion due to the D'Amato connection.

Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3): D'Amato at 20-1 with Mike Smith. Interestingly, Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith is aboard despite the 20-1 morning line. Smith does not ride hopeless animals. His presence here suggests either that D'Amato has four legitimate contenders or that Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3) may be further along than the odds indicate. This is the most intriguing longshot on the entire card.

Bella Lyra (POST 5): Mark Glatt at 20-1 with Gonzalez. Glatt had Santarena (POST 4) earlier in Race 3 and Bella Lyra (POST 5) in the stakes is a long price for the trainer. Pass unless the horse opens significantly shorter on the board.

Selections

Win: Light Won Up (POST 9) Place: Inbox (POST 2) Show: Darya (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: The D'Amato four-pronged attack is the central wagering challenge here. The recommended approach is to oppose the betting public's instinct to box all D'Amato horses and instead single Light Won Up (POST 9) on top in the exacta paired with Inbox (POST 2) and Darya (POST 6). For trifectas, key Light Won Up (POST 9) on top, spread Inbox (POST 2), Darya (POST 6), and Lookin At Diamond (POST 8) in second, then add Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3) and Wild Like The West (POST 7) in third for the exotic coverage. The Mike Smith angle on Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3) at 20-1 justifies a token win investment.

RACE 9 — Post 8:21 PM — 1760f | Dirt | Claiming $16,000 | Purse $26,000

One mile on the main track, claiming $16,000. Ten-horse field. A mid-level claiming mile at night, which is a more analytical race requiring careful evaluation of pace and class.

Race 9

Pace Analysis

Hard To Figure (POST 2) from Ronald Ellis at 2-1 with Hernandez is the morning line choice, and in a ten-horse claiming mile, the even-money favorite from a good post often determines the pace shape. Duran (POST 3) at 5-1 from Isidro Tamayo with Ayuso and Mighty Kai (POST 5) at 5-1 from Steve Sherman with Pereira offer pace pressure. Royal 'n Rando (POST 9) at 6-1 from Mike Puype with Rosario is a significant figure — again, Rosario taking a mid-level claiming mile mount is an angle.

Key Contenders

Hard To Figure (POST 2): Ronald Ellis at 2-1 with Hernandez from post 2 in a ten-horse claiming mile. Ellis conditions horses that are honest and competitive at the claiming level, and Hernandez has been active and effective throughout the card. Post 2 in a one-mile dirt route is a favorable draw.

Royal 'n Rando (POST 9): The Rosario factor is significant here, just as it was in Race 7. Mike Puype at 6-1 with Rosario from post 9 — Rosario riding at the $16,000 claiming level suggests something appealing in this horse's form. At 6-1, this is excellent overlay value if Rosario's presence is a reliable signal.

Secondary Choices

Mighty Kai (POST 5): Steve Sherman at 5-1 with Tiago Pereira from post 5. Sherman is a solid claiming trainer with good numbers at Santa Anita, and Pereira has had an active card today. Center post in a ten-horse mile is viable.

Duran (POST 3): Isidro Tamayo at 5-1 with Ayuso from post 3. A competitive price from a good post. Tamayo is an experienced claiming trainer and Duran (POST 3) at 5-1 in this field is a legitimate win candidate.

Cathal (POST 6): Steve Knapp at 6-1 with Baze. The Knapp barn had Prince Dolce (POST 2) as the Best Bet in Race 4 and is clearly well-represented today. Cathal (POST 6) at 6-1 with Baze from a workable post is a live contender.

Longshots

Mongolian Max (POST 1): Steven Miyadi at 8-1 with Aguilar from the rail. Miyadi occasionally places horses expertly in claiming races and Mongolian Max (POST 1) at 8-1 from the rail in a dirt mile is worth a small trifecta investment.

Leyas Candy (POST 7): Andrew Harris at 12-1 with Maldonado. Pass.

Crypto Ride (POST 4): Simon Hobson at 15-1 with Frey. Pass.

Big Juanito (POST 8): R.B. Hess Jr. at 30-1 with Lezcano. Pass.

Shady Appeal (POST 10): Jeff Bonde at 30-1 with Bautista. The outside post and the long odds make this a non-factor.

Selections

Win: Royal 'n Rando (POST 9) Place: Hard To Figure (POST 2) Show: Cathal (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: This is a race where the Rosario/Puype angle on Royal 'n Rando (POST 9) at 6-1 provides the best risk-reward on the card in the claiming division. Win bet on Royal 'n Rando (POST 9) is justified. Exacta 9-2 as primary, with 2-9 as the reverse. Trifecta key 9 and 2 on top, spread to Cathal (POST 6), Mighty Kai (POST 5), and Duran (POST 3) in third.

RACE 10 — Post 8:51 PM — 1430f | Turf | Maiden Claiming $50,000 | Purse $35,000

Approximately seven furlongs on the inner turf course (1430f), maiden claiming $50,000 for fillies and mares. A fourteen-horse field for the finale. Large fields in maiden claiming turf sprints are among the most difficult races to handicap — variance is high, form is inconsistent, and trips are frequently compromised. The approach here is to identify two or three logical contenders and build exotic coverage around them.

Race 10

Pace Analysis

Winika (POST 4) from Jeff Mullins at 3-1 with Hernandez is the morning line favorite, and Egyptian Mistress (POST 10) from Neil Drysdale at 4-1 with Rosario and Greys Over Bays (POST 14) from Sean McCarthy at 4-1 with Baze are the primary rivals. Fourteen horses in a turf sprint create a busy early pace scenario, with outside posts losing ground immediately and inside posts battling for position.

Key Contenders

Winika (POST 4): Jeff Mullins at 3-1 with Hernandez from a favorable draw. Mullins conditioned Red Flag (POST 1) earlier in Race 3 and has been active across the card. Post 4 of fourteen in a turf sprint is an excellent position. Winika (POST 4) is the morning line favorite for logical reasons.

Egyptian Mistress (POST 10): Neil Drysdale at 4-1 with Rosario from post 10. In a fourteen-horse field, post 10 requires either speed or a wide trip. Rosario will navigate expertly. Drysdale's horses in maiden claiming turf are typically fit on debut or return, and the 4-1 price is fair.

Greys Over Bays (POST 14): Sean McCarthy at 4-1 with Baze from the outside post of fourteen. The draw is the concern — in a turf sprint, post 14 means either using significant early energy to find position or accepting a wide trip throughout. Baze is an experienced turf rider who can manage the situation, but the outside post is a real handicap.

Secondary Choices

Sunny Creed (POST 13): Jeff Mullins gets a second runner at 5-1 with Frey from post 13. Mullins with two in a fourteen-horse field is an interesting scenario — one is likely the preferred, and Winika (POST 4) with the better post and Hernandez appears to be the intended winner. However, Sunny Creed (POST 13) with Frey at 5-1 is not to be dismissed if Mullins has split intentions.

Zuraya (POST 7): Michael McCarthy at 8-1 with Jaramillo from post 7. A mid-field draw in a fourteen-horse turf sprint is a reasonable position. Worth trifecta coverage.

Havana White (POST 6): Mark Glatt at 6-1 with Gonzalez from post 6. Glatt had two earlier on the card and Havana White (POST 6) from a favorable post is a legitimate contender. At 6-1, this is the best price among the secondary tier.

Longshots

Queen Kimbe (POST 5): Craig Dollase at 10-1 with Baze. Note that Baze is also listed on Greys Over Bays (POST 14) — if Baze rides Greys Over Bays (POST 14), then a jockey change on Queen Kimbe (POST 5) should be noted. Dollase trains solid turf runners and post 5 is workable.

Alyn's Girl (POST 1): Mark Glatt at 10-1 with Lezcano from the rail. A second Glatt runner at 10-1 — the inside rail in a fourteen-horse turf sprint is problematic from a traffic standpoint, though if Alyn's Girl (POST 1) breaks cleanly and finds position, the rail can be economical.

Carita Linda (POST 8): Doug O'Neill at 12-1 with Ayuso. O'Neill's maiden turf runners occasionally offer value, and Ayuso has been productive throughout the card.

Whatastarr (POST 12): Leonard Powell at 12-1 with Mike Smith. Smith riding another longshot today — as noted with Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3) in Race 8, the Hall of Famer's presence elevates any runner's credentials.

Magic Wind (POST 2): Hector Palma at 15-1 with Pereira. Outside contention.

Split (POST 3): Tim Yakteen at 20-1 with Belmont. Yakteen has been quiet today.

Swimmingly (POST 9): Aggie Ordonez at 15-1 with Desormeaux. Desormeaux riding again late in the card — he accepted Empress Matilda (POST 9) in Race 6 and Swimmingly (POST 9) here. The Hall of Famer on two long prices late is a bankroll-management concern but an overlay finder's paradise.

Cindys Beach House (POST 11): Bill McLean at 15-1 with Orantes. Deep outsider.

Selections

Win: Winika (POST 4) Place: Egyptian Mistress (POST 10) Show: Havana White (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: In a fourteen-horse maiden claiming turf sprint, the trifecta is the primary vehicle. Key Winika (POST 4) on top, spread Egyptian Mistress (POST 10), Havana White (POST 6), Greys Over Bays (POST 14), and Zuraya (POST 7) in second and third. For a superfecta, add Sunny Creed (POST 13) and Carita Linda (POST 8) to the fourth position. Given the chaotic nature of large maiden turf fields, a modest investment spread across trifecta combinations is far more efficient than a single win bet.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Joel Rosario is the marquee rider on this card with mounts across multiple races and conditions. His book includes Somerset West (POST 5) in Race 1, Santarena (POST 4) in Race 3, Nineteenth Hole (POST 3) in Race 4, Chasin Munny (POST 7) in Race 7, Inbox (POST 2) in Race 8, Royal 'n Rando (POST 9) in Race 9, and Egyptian Mistress (POST 10) in Race 10. When Rosario accepts mounts at the claiming level — Chasin Munny (POST 7) at $5,000 in Race 7 and Royal 'n Rando (POST 9) at $16,000 in Race 9 — it is a meaningful signal. Top riders at major tracks typically have multiple options and choose the best available mount. A Rosario ride at the bottom claiming level should be taken seriously.

T.C. Baze is another veteran with strong craft, riding Van Gogh Style (POST 4) in Race 2, Forever Ben (POST 2) in Race 5, and key mounts in Races 9 and 10. Baze's experience in dirt routes and turf sprints makes him valuable on any horse that requires tactical management.

Armando Ayuso is logging a full card today with mounts in Races 3 through 10, demonstrating that he has developed trust with multiple barns including Sadler, Hanson, and O'Neill. His workload suggests he is in strong form this meet.

Victor Espinoza's single mount — Lookin At Diamond (POST 8) in Race 8 — deserves attention. Hall of Fame riders who ride selectively at this stage of their careers do not take losing rides for sport. This is a horse worth including in exotic combinations regardless of the odds.

Mike Smith riding Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3) in Race 8 at 20-1 and Whatastarr (POST 12) in Race 10 at 12-1 is a similar situation. Smith and Espinoza sharing late-card longshot mounts is unusual and worth tracking through the afternoon's earlier races.

Kent Desormeaux accepts Empress Matilda (POST 9) in Race 6 and Swimmingly (POST 9) in Race 10. Given his legendary career and selective riding schedule, both mounts deserve second looks at their respective prices.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Phil D'Amato's presence on this card is unmatched — six horses across multiple races with the headlining four-pronged attack in the Honeymoon Stakes. D'Amato is consistently among the leading trainers at Santa Anita with outstanding win percentages in turf races, and his ability to develop grass horses from maiden through stakes company is well-documented. When D'Amato runs four horses in a single stakes race, the betting strategy requires identifying his primary intended winner. Inbox (POST 2) with Rosario is the logical choice, but Darya (POST 6) with Berrios at 5-1 and the Mike Smith connection on Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3) at 20-1 suggest D'Amato's roster may be legitimately deep in quality.

John Sadler is represented across the card in Races 1, 3, and 8, consistent with his role as a leading conditioner at Santa Anita. Sadler's turf runners in particular should be followed closely, as his maiden and allowance grass horses tend to be well-prepared.

Jeff Mullins doubles in Race 10 with Winika (POST 4) and Sunny Creed (POST 13), which mirrors the D'Amato strategy at a lower level. Winika (POST 4) with the better post and the morning line favoritism is the preferred choice.

Peter Miller is an elite trainer with horses in Races 2 and 4 — Proud Racer (POST 1) as the even-money maiden favorite and Matt At Five (POST 5) as a legitimate contender in the turf allowance. Miller's success rate across all conditions is among the highest in the country, and both horses deserve respect.

Steve Knapp's Prince Dolce (POST 2) as the consensus Best Bet in Race 4 and Cathal (POST 6) in Race 9 gives the conditioner two legitimate plays on the afternoon. Knapp has been well-regarded in the Southern California turf scene for years.

Doug O'Neill, in the news at Saratoga this weekend with his connections to VITRUVIAN MAN in the Belmont Stakes, is also represented at Santa Anita with Bro Bro (POST 9) in Race 4, Light Won Up (POST 9) in Race 8, and Carita Linda (POST 8) in Race 10. O'Neill operates a bicoastal stable and his Santa Anita runners are always prepared regardless of the trainer's primary attention.

Mark Glatt appears in Races 3, 8, and 10 with multiple horses, and his turf record at Santa Anita supports including his runners in exotic combinations even at longer prices.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The single strongest play on the card is Prince Dolce (POST 2) in Race 4, the consensus Best Bet with multiple handicapping angles supporting the selection. The 2-1 morning line in a nine-horse turf allowance is fair given the post position and trainer/jockey combination, and the horse may compress further at post time. A meaningful win bet on Prince Dolce (POST 2) is the day's primary investment.

The second-best value play is Royal 'n Rando (POST 9) in Race 9 at 6-1. The Rosario angle in a mid-level claiming mile provides excellent overlay potential compared to Hard To Figure (POST 2) at 2-1. If Royal 'n Rando (POST 9) drifts slightly in the pool, this becomes an outstanding value win bet.

Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3) in Race 8 at 20-1 with Mike Smith is the best longshot value play on the card. Hall of Fame riders do not take 20-1 mounts in listed stakes races without reason. A small win investment here, combined with D'Amato's formidable record with turf fillies, creates an asymmetric return opportunity.

Pretty Cecy (POST 2) with Rosario in Race 6 at 20-1 is the most intriguing value anomaly — a Hall of Fame-caliber rider on a 20-1 horse in a twelve-horse claiming turf sprint. The field is chaotic enough that a 20-1 winner is entirely plausible, and the Rosario connection suggests there may be more here than the morning line reflects.

For structured exotic wagering, the Pick 5 spanning Races 6 through 10 is the recommended sequence. Using Lady Maryann (POST 5) with Empress Matilda (POST 9) in Race 6, Chasin Munny (POST 7) in Race 7, Light Won Up (POST 9) with Inbox (POST 2) in Race 8, Royal 'n Rando (POST 9) with Hard To Figure (POST 2) in Race 9, and Winika (POST 4) with Egyptian Mistress (POST 10) in Race 10 creates a manageable Pick 5 ticket. Single Chasin Munny (POST 7) in Race 7 to keep the ticket cost controlled, and double up in Races 6, 8, 9, and 10.

A Pick 4 from Races 7 through 10 using singles in Race 7 (CHASIN MUNNY, POST 7) and Race 9 (ROYAL 'N RANDO, POST 9) while spreading in Races 8 and 10 is an aggressive but cost-effective approach to the back half of the card.

The trifecta in Race 8, the Honeymoon Stakes, is the marquee exotic of the day. Keying Light Won Up (POST 9) on top, with Inbox (POST 2) and Darya (POST 6) in second and Dreaming Of Alys (POST 3) and Lookin At Diamond (POST 8) completing the ticket, produces a ticket that covers the field's most probable outcomes while preserving meaningful payoff potential.
