Race Day Overview

The Spa wraps up its penultimate full week of the 2026 meet with a loaded 12-race card on Friday, August 21. The day carries serious stakes implications heading into the climactic weekend, with the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes looming Saturday and the Grade 1 Travers Stakes the following week. The Alabama field is set around COUNTING STARS, and the confirmation this week that NAPOLEON SOLO will contest the Travers with John Velazquez aboard has generated enormous buzz throughout the backstretch. Both of those storylines cast a long shadow over Friday's program, which is itself a compelling card featuring the $200,000 Fleet Indian Stakes in Race 9 as the day's centerpiece.

Mark Casse is having a blockbuster Saratoga meet, currently sitting third in the trainer standings with 10 wins and over $1.86 million in earnings. His barn will be active throughout Friday's card, and stable connections are optimistic heading into the weekend. Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher remain the dominant forces at the Spa, and both have multiple runners on today's program.

The Marshall Gramm situation — HISA charges for multiple rule violations including fraud and unauthorized access to confidential horse health information — continues to cast a shadow over the broader racing landscape, though it has no direct bearing on today's Saratoga entries.

Dylan Davis enters today's card fresh off a multi-winner performance on Wednesday, which aligns with his current form surge at the meet. Flavien Prat similarly had a strong mid-week book of winners and picks up a full slate of live mounts today.

Race 10 has been flagged by multiple handicappers as the Best Bet of the day, centering on the maiden special weight at 1870f on the inner turf.

Weather and Track Conditions

Saratoga Springs is forecast for partly cloudy conditions on Friday, August 21, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s and manageable humidity following a drier stretch mid-week. No significant rainfall is anticipated during racing hours, which should keep the main track labeled fast and the turf courses in firm-to-good condition. The inner turf course, which hosts Races 1, 8, and 10, has been playing favorably for closers over the past week when the going is good-to-firm, though pace scenarios dictate outcomes as much as surface. The main Widener turf course used in Races 5, 6, and 9 has been consistent. With the track maintenance crew having had a drier week to work with, all surfaces are expected to be at their best ratings heading into the high-profile Saturday card.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Saratoga's main track has been showing a mild speed bias in sprints over recent days, with horses able to get position early from inside posts holding an edge. In two-turn routes on the dirt, inside posts carry a disadvantage due to the tight first turn, with middle posts performing best at the 1760f and 1980f distances. Outside posts beyond eight have faced significant challenges in two-turn dirt routes.

On the inner turf course at 2090f, early pace can be brutal given the tight turns and the proximity of the opening bend. Horses that can settle in good position from the inside or middle posts and make one sweeping move in the lane have been most effective. The Widener turf, used for the maiden sprint in Race 5, has been playing fairly, with a slight lean toward horses that can press the pace from mid-range posts.

Post position is a notable factor in the outer turf maiden route in Race 6 at 1870f, where the field of 16 creates a considerable outside post disadvantage in the early going. Horses drawn inside have a meaningful advantage in getting a clean run through the first turn.

In the Widener turf sprint in Race 8 at 1210f, the rail can be deadly if a speed-biased pace develops, but the 1210f start on the Widener gives horses with tactical speed from posts 3-7 the best setup.

Race 1 — Post 1:10 PM — 2090f | Turf | Older | Optional Claiming $110,000 | Purse $130,000

Pace Analysis

The 2090f inner turf route sets up as a race with legitimate early pace questions. Wynstock (POST 6) will likely try to establish position on the front end, and with Over And Ollie (POST 7) also needing to be forwardly placed, there is a possibility of a genuinely contested early pace. If those two hook up on the front, it sets up beautifully for closers. The distance on the inner turf is unforgiving — horses that go too hard early rarely hold on. The overall pace scenario leans toward a contested, medium-to-fast early tempo, which benefits horses with a late kick in good position.

Key Contenders

Cugino (POST 3) draws the most attention from the handicapping community and it is easy to see why. Trained by Hall of Famer Claude McGaughey III and ridden by Flavien Prat, Cugino (POST 3) is a seasoned performer on the inner turf and fits this optional claiming level comfortably. McGaughey rarely runs a horse below his capabilities, and a 2-1 morning line reflects that respect. Prat is riding with enormous confidence at the current meet after back-to-back winning performances mid-week. The post-3 draw is workable at the inner turf distance.

Tiz Dashing (POST 1) opens at 2-1 co-favoritism under Javier Castellano, who is one of the most accomplished inner turf pilots in North America. The rail post at 2090f on the inner turf is not necessarily a disadvantage for a horse of this style, particularly if the pace develops in front of him. Barclay Tagg has maintained a quietly productive Saratoga meet and conditions here are tailor-made.

Secondary Choices

Right To Vote (POST 5) is the Chad Brown entry, which automatically attracts attention at the Spa. Manuel Franco rides, and Brown's barn has shown excellent form on the turf throughout the summer. The 2-1 morning line reflects how seriously the market will take this one. At the optional claiming level on the inner turf, Brown horses are notoriously difficult to fade.

Capture The Flag (POST 4) represents Todd Pletcher at 8-1 with Velazquez in the irons. Given the Velazquez-to-Travers news cycle this week, connections are clearly focused, but Pletcher's barn has multiple irons in the fire Friday and this one could outrun its number.

Longshots

Carson's Run (POST 2) is trained by Miguel Clement at 5-1. Clement has had a very productive summer at Saratoga and Dylan Davis rode two winners Wednesday. The combination is live at a price. Wynstock (POST 6) opens as the actual morning-line favorite at 1-1 under Jose Ortiz for the Joe Sharp barn. Sharp operates a smaller string but targets spots effectively, and if Wynstock (POST 6) gets an uncontested lead, this one could wire the field. Over And Ollie (POST 7) for Richard Dutrow at 2-1 draws a TBA rider, which is a concern. Sara's Shaman (POST 8) at 12-1 for Kantarmaci is the deepest closer in the field and is a toss in a pace meltdown scenario. Otello (POST 9) also draws TBA from the Kantarmaci barn at 6-1 from the outside post, a significant concern at the inner turf distance.

Selections

Win: Cugino (POST 3) Place: Tiz Dashing (POST 1) Show: Right To Vote (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: The logical play is to use Cugino (POST 3) on top in exactas with Tiz Dashing (POST 1) and Right To Vote (POST 5). If Wynstock (POST 6) fires as the lone speed, the exacta could come back at a healthy price with Cugino (POST 3) running him down late. Small win saver on Carson's Run (POST 2) at 5-1 given the Clement-Davis combination.

Race 2 — Post 1:44 PM — 1760f | Dirt | Older | Optional Claiming $45,000 | Purse $110,000

Pace Analysis

The 1760f two-turn dirt sprint presents a pace puzzle. Dr. Kraft (POST 5) under Prat appears to have early foot and Shadow Dragon (POST 4) with Jose Ortiz is another that prefers to be near the front. Whittington Park (POST 3) for Dylan Davis and Orlando Noda has shown the ability to press. If two or three horses battle for the early lead around the first turn, the closers come into play. Concorde Spirit (POST 6) under Kendrick Carmouche is likely the primary beneficiary if the pace collapses. The one-mile trip on the main track has been favoring mid-range posts this summer.

Key Contenders

Whittington Park (POST 3) opens at 2-1 for the Orlando Noda barn with Dylan Davis, who is in excellent form following his multi-winner Wednesday. The post-3 draw is ideal at the one-mile distance, avoiding the traffic of the rail while staying in favorable territory. At the optional claiming level of $45,000, this appears to be a horse dropping from a higher class, which adds appeal.

Dr. Kraft (POST 5) draws 3-1 with Flavien Prat from the Kantarmaci barn. Kantarmaci runs two horses in Race 1 and another here — a typically aggressive stabling strategy at the Spa. Prat's form is exceptional and the horse gets a tactical post.

Secondary Choices

Shadow Dragon (POST 4) at 4-1 with Jose Ortiz is a logical pace presser from a box draw that suits the distance. Fernando Abreu has been training sharp horses all summer. Concorde Spirit (POST 6) at 4-1 under Carmouche represents the Gustavo Rodriguez barn and is the most likely late runner if the pace develops as projected. The 4-1 price offers reasonable value for the role it figures to play.

Longshots

Quick To Accuse (POST 1) at 5-1 from the rail for the Synnefias barn with Edgar Zayas gets a tough draw at the one-mile distance. Palace Boss (POST 2) at 8-1 for Horacio De Paz with Franco is another that must overcome inside post disadvantage. Jackson Heights (POST 7) at 15-1 from the outside post for Kantarmaci with Ricardo Santana Jr. is the longest shot in the field and faces a brutal draw. Toss unless pace completely implodes.

Selections

Win: Whittington Park (POST 3) Place: Dr. Kraft (POST 5) Show: Concorde Spirit (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: Box Whittington Park (POST 3) and Dr. Kraft (POST 5) in exactas. Include Shadow Dragon (POST 4) as an alternate in the trifecta. Concorde Spirit (POST 6) is worth a small win bet at 4-1 as the pace-collapse beneficiary.

Race 3 — Post 2:18 PM — 1760f | Dirt | Fillies and Mares | Maiden Special Weight | Purse $115,000

Pace Analysis

This maiden special weight for fillies and mares at one mile on the dirt figures to see a modest early pace. Jadorlinija (POST 2) and Moonlit (POST 3) — both from the Clement barn — create an intriguing intra-stable dynamic. Neither is known as a confirmed front-runner, which suggests a pace that could be set by Romala (POST 1) from Chad Brown or others that break alertly. The slower the early fractions, the more likely the race turns into a late-kicking affair. Hypnotica (POST 7) under Prat from the Brown barn is positioned perfectly to capitalize on a slow pace.

Key Contenders

Hypnotica (POST 7) at 4-1 is the Brown entry with Prat, and that combination at Saratoga in a maiden race is one of the most dangerous in the sport. Brown's maiden graduates routinely go on to productive careers and his fillies in particular have been lights-out at the Spa this summer. PRAT on a Brown-trained maiden is a signal the barn believes this one is ready.

Jadorlinija (POST 2) opens at 2-1 co-favoritism for Clement with Santana, and Clement has had multiple winners at the meet. In a field that lacks clear pace, a Clement maiden with a polished work tab is always dangerous.

Secondary Choices

Moonlit (POST 3) at 2-1 is the stablemate of Jadorlinija (POST 2), also from Clement, with Franco. Clement running two at equal odds suggests both deserve equal respect. The logical scenario is one outperforms the other, and Moonlit (POST 3) may be the slightly preferred of the two given Franco's recent form.

Romala (POST 1) at 6-1 for Brown with Ortiz is a third powerhouse combination. Brown rarely runs two in the same maiden race without confidence in both. Romala (POST 1) from the rail must break cleanly, but Ortiz is expert at getting inside post horses into position.

Longshots

Full Of Tact (POST 5) at 12-1 for Oscar Barrera III with Lezcano deserves a longer look than the odds suggest if pace collapses. Epic Selloff (POST 6) at 10-1 for William Morey with Davis could be live given Davis's current form, but the trainer statistics at Saratoga maiden races are not particularly strong. Masquerademistress (POST 4) at 20-1 for Charlton Baker with Katie Davis is the deep longshot; a pace scenario miracle would be needed.

Selections

Win: Hypnotica (POST 7) Place: Jadorlinija (POST 2) Show: Moonlit (POST 3)

Betting Strategy: The Brown-Prat maiden combination is the value play here. At 4-1, Hypnotica (POST 7) offers real return in a race where co-favorites at 2-1 are logical but not generous. Exacta: Hypnotica (POST 7) over Jadorlinija (POST 2) and Moonlit (POST 3). Trifecta: 7 over 2-3 over 1-2-3.

Race 4 — Post 2:52 PM — 1320f | Dirt | Claiming $35,000, Non-Winners of Two Lifetime | Purse $55,000

Pace Analysis

The six-furlong sprint for claimers that have not won two lifetime is likely to see a fast early pace. Nash Potatoes (POST 1) from the Sweezey barn under Carmouche figures to try to establish position from the rail. Island Town (POST 2) from Asmussen with Ortiz is another that projects forwardly. Hot Property (POST 6) with Franco also shows early speed tendencies. If three horses press in the first quarter, the race sets up for a closer. Metatron (POST 7) under Prat from Keri Brion is the most notable late threat.

Key Contenders

Island Town (POST 2) at 2-1 is the Steve Asmussen entry with Jose Ortiz, and this is precisely the kind of spot Asmussen targets effectively — a mid-level claiming race at a major meet with a top jockey. The post-2 draw is excellent at six furlongs. If Island Town (POST 2) can grab a comfortable stalking position early, Ortiz has the tactical intelligence to time a run perfectly.

Metatron (POST 7) at 4-1 from Keri Brion with Prat is the most interesting alternative. Brion is a sharp conditioner who picks spots carefully, and putting Prat on a claimer at this level is a meaningful investment. Metatron (POST 7) will need pace to set up in front of it from the outside post.

Secondary Choices

Nash Potatoes (POST 1) at 4-1 under Carmouche is the rail speed. If the horse breaks cleanly and gets uncontested, this could wire. Kent Sweezey operates a modest string but knows how to place horses. Tartabull (POST 3) at 6-1 for Rohan Crichton with Luis Saez offers each-way value. Saez is perpetually underrated in the Saratoga jockey standings and finds winners at prices.

Longshots

Hot Property (POST 6) at 6-1 for Linda Rice with Franco has some pace engagement appeal. Rice has trained horses at Saratoga for decades and is rarely outclassed at this level. Unauthorized (POST 5) at 8-1 for Rodolphe Brisset with Zayas is a trainer known for landing long-priced winners. Rochester (POST 8) at 8-1 from outside with Santana for Ronald Moquett is difficult from the widest post in a sprint. Peyton (POST 4) at 20-1 for Schettino is a toss.

Selections

Win: Island Town (POST 2) Place: Metatron (POST 7) Show: Nash Potatoes (POST 1)

Betting Strategy: Island Town (POST 2) is a solid single in the Pick 4 if constructing a sequence. Exacta: 2 over 7 and 1. Trifecta: 2 over 7-1 over 1-7-3.

Race 5 — Post 3:26 PM — 1210f | Turf | Maiden Special Weight | Older Males | Purse $115,000

Pace Analysis

The Widener turf sprint at 1210f for older male maidens sets up as a speed-favoring race given the distance. Fire Marshal (POST 8) under Prat for Michael Maker projects as the potential lone speed or at minimum a forwardly-placed horse. Good Aim (POST 2) with Ortiz and Raise The Roof (POST 3) with Franco will also want early position. If three or more horses battle for the front, closer types like Tinian (POST 9) and Gnosis (POST 5) could benefit. The Widener turf sprint at 1210f has been rewarding horses that can stalk just off the early pace.

Key Contenders

Tinian (POST 9) at 4-1 for Mark Casse with Velazquez is the most prominent name on this ticket. Casse's barn has been exceptional at the meet, and Velazquez adds immediate credibility. Casse has shown particular expertise with turf maidens, and Tinian (POST 9) draws a favorable post for a stalker. The trainer's commentary this week reflected genuine optimism about his Saratoga string.

Fire Marshal (POST 8) at 4-1 for Michael Maker with Prat is the other top selection. Maker is an underrated turf trainer with an excellent record at Saratoga in grass routes and sprints alike. Prat has been dominant mid-week and the horse gets a legitimate pace scenario if it can set comfortable fractions.

Secondary Choices

Good Aim (POST 2) at 4-1 for Adam Rice with Ortiz is attractive from a favorable inside draw. Ortiz and Adam Rice have worked well together at the meet. Raise The Roof (POST 3) at 4-1 for Horacio De Paz with Franco from the three-hole sets up well tactically.

Longshots

Gnosis (POST 5) at 6-1 for Raymond Handal with Davis has legitimate closer profile in a fast-pace scenario and Davis is riding sharply. Pyralis (POST 6) at 8-1 for Robert Falcone Jr. with Santana is worth a trifecta inclusion. Royal Reserve (POST 4) at 8-1 for Linda Rice with Lezcano is a second string from the Rice stable. Scalene (POST 7) at 15-1 for Robert Ribaudo with Castellano draws some interest based on trainer reputation, even at a long price. Bet On Zion (POST 1) at 20-1 and Ogugua (POST 10) at 6-1 with a TBA rider from the Rodriguez barn; the TBA status on Ogugua (POST 10) is a concern.

Selections

Win: Tinian (POST 9) Place: Fire Marshal (POST 8) Show: Good Aim (POST 2)

Betting Strategy: Tinian (POST 9) and Fire Marshal (POST 8) form a logical exacta box. Include Good Aim (POST 2) in the trifecta. Use Tinian (POST 9) as a single in the Pick 4 sequence if comfortable with Casse's current form.

Race 6 — Post 4:00 PM — 1870f | Outer Turf | Fillies and Mares | Maiden Special Weight | Purse $115,000

Pace Analysis

A massive field of 16 fillies goes 1870f on the outer Widener turf course in one of the most challenging betting races on the card. The sheer size of the field creates early chaos, particularly from outside posts. With no clear speed indicator dominating the field, the pace could be moderate, which would set up mid-range stalkers perfectly. Golden Siren (POST 3) and Energy Flows (POST 8) are likely to be prominent. The concern is horses from posts 10 through 16 spending excessive energy getting into position in the first half mile.

Key Contenders

Golden Siren (POST 3) at 2-1 is the Mark Casse entry with Ortiz and draws perfectly for the distance. A 2-1 opening line in a 16-horse maiden field is a significant statement from the morning-line maker. Casse's turf maiden success rate at Saratoga has been excellent this summer, and ORTIZ from post 3 at a route distance is among the most reliable combinations at the Spa.

Energy Flows (POST 8) at 3-1 for LaRose with Santana is the other major contender. The 8-post is acceptable at the 1870f outer turf start, and Energy Flows (POST 8) has drawn attention from handicappers as a potential runner to beat if Golden Siren (POST 3) disappoints.

Secondary Choices

Doves And Hawks (POST 6) at 4-1 for Chad Brown with Prat is dangerous. Brown's turf maidens at Saratoga are reliably well-prepared, and PRAT riding for Brown in a maiden is a powerful signal. The 6-post at the 1870f outer turf is workable. Margie's Girl (POST 16) at 4-1 for McPeek with Ortiz is interesting only because Ortiz appears twice in this race (posts 3 and 16), meaning one mount will get changed — track programs should be checked for any jockey switches before post time. Bluegrass Princess (POST 10) at 4-1 for McPeek with Saez is a second McPeek runner.

Longshots

Belisa (POST 5) at 6-1 for Clement with Davis offers some value given Davis's current form. Determined Scholes (POST 2) at 5-1 for Devaux with Franco from inside draws attention; Cherie Devaux is a skilled conditioner of turf fillies. Revenge Of The Sis (POST 15) at 5-1 for George Weaver with TBA has an impossible outside post draw in a 16-horse field. Encrypting (POST 4) at 8-1 for Albert Stall Jr. with Saez (note Saez also rides BLUEGRASS PRINCESS at post 10, another potential jockey change) is a trainer known for shipping turf runners to Saratoga. Superior Returns (POST 11) at 8-1 is a second Brown entry with Franco. Have Hope (POST 7) at 12-1 for Pletcher with Castellano. Belmont Street (POST 1) at 15-1 for Dutrow with Velazquez from the rail in an outside turf course opener is not hopeless. Hunter Creek (POST 9) at 12-1, Keshi (POST 13) at 10-1 for Mott with TBA rider, Get My Good Side (POST 12) at 12-1 for Amelia Green, and Funny Words (POST 14) at 15-1 for Ryerson are all deep longshots in this field. Note the multiple TBA riders in this race — jockey confirmations are important before wagering.

Selections

Win: Golden Siren (POST 3) Place: Energy Flows (POST 8) Show: Doves And Hawks (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: This is a race where exacta wheels are the smart play given the field size. Wheel Golden Siren (POST 3) over top half of the field in exactas. Trifecta: 3 over 8-6 over 2-5-6-8-10. In the Pick 3, use Golden Siren (POST 3) and Doves And Hawks (POST 6) together given the Casse and Brown stable depth.

Race 7 — Post 4:34 PM — 1980f | Dirt | Older | Optional Claiming $80,000, Non-Winners of Two Exceptions | Purse $125,000

Pace Analysis

The 1980f two-turn dirt route at $80,000 optional claiming level has a very interesting pace scenario. Solo Venturi (POST 7) under Prat for William Walden projects as the likely pace-setter or near it, but Georgia Magic (POST 6) with Franco for Steven Schauer may also want to be forwardly placed. If Solo Venturi (POST 7) gets away cleanly and establishes a comfortable lead, the late runners like Yo Daddy (POST 9) and Cooke Creek (POST 8) will need to close enormous ground. The distance on the main track at Saratoga in two-turn routes favors horses that can stalk within striking distance.

Key Contenders

Solo Venturi (POST 7) at 3-1 under Prat is the morning-line favorite and draws the most attention from handicappers. The 7-post at a two-turn route distance is workable, and Prat's ability to rate horses over two turns is elite. The Walden barn has shown consistent improvement with its horses this summer.

Yo Daddy (POST 9) at 4-1 for Linda Rice with Lezcano is the primary closer candidate. Rice is a savvy conditioner who knows exactly how to set these horses up for spots. At the outside post in a two-turn route, LEZCANO will need to work to find position, but if pace develops honestly, this one could swoop late.

Secondary Choices

Georgia Magic (POST 6) at 4-1 for Schauer with Franco is an interesting pace engagement horse. Render Judgment (POST 4) at 5-1 for McPeek with Ortiz gets an excellent post draw and McPeek's optional claiming runners are typically well-spotted. Cooke Creek (POST 8) at 6-1 for Maker with Santana adds another quality closing option in the race.

Longshots

Alan Turing (POST 1) at 12-1 for Patrick Quick with Castellano is at a big price from the rail but Castellano can navigate inside posts. Urban Planner (POST 3) at 12-1 for David Jacobson with Davis draws some attention; Jacobson is an underrated conditioner of route horses. Sherlock's Jewel (POST 5) at 10-1 for Gustavo Rodriguez with Carmouche offers value if pace collapses. Racing Driver (POST 2) at 15-1 for Delgado with Saez faces a tough post and weak morning-line support.

Selections

Win: Solo Venturi (POST 7) Place: Render Judgment (POST 4) Show: Yo Daddy (POST 9)

Betting Strategy: Solo Venturi (POST 7) is a strong single in the Pick 4 sequence leading into the stakes race. Exacta: 7 over 4-9-6. Trifecta: 7 over 4-9 over 4-6-8-9.

Race 8 — Post 5:09 PM — 1210f | Inner Turf | Older | Optional Claiming $55,000, Non-Winners of One Exception | Purse $120,000

Pace Analysis

The 1210f inner turf sprint at the $55,000 optional claiming level is dominated by the presence of Boston's Phinest (POST 3) at 1-1. A morning line of odds-on is rare in a field of 12, and it reflects a genuinely dominant recent performance in this animal's form line. The pace will be set by whoever can break alertly with Boston's Phinest (POST 3) likely to sit just off the pace or on the lead depending on how the field breaks. Sod Siren (POST 6) and One Last Knock (POST 1) have early speed profiles. If the pace is honest, closers like Roman Grace (POST 11) and Only For Now (POST 7) have a chance to close.

Key Contenders

Boston's Phinest (POST 3) at 1-1 is clearly the race to beat. Trained by Bruce Brown and ridden by Ortiz, the 1-1 morning line reflects that handicappers across the board consider this one in a class above the field. At the inner turf sprint distance, post 3 is ideal. The question is simply whether the price warrants playing to win.

Roman Grace (POST 11) at 2-1 for Linda Rice with Santana opens as the clear second choice. Rice runs two in this race — Army Gal (POST 8) at 4-1 with Lezcano and Roman Grace (POST 11) at 2-1 with Santana — and the morning-line differential suggests Roman Grace (POST 11) is the more preferred of the two.

Secondary Choices

Sod Siren (POST 6) at 4-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. with Prat is a powerful combination that should not be overlooked even if Boston's Phinest (POST 3) is dominant on paper. Joseph has had a very productive turf meet and PRAT from post 6 in a 1210f inner turf sprint is a comfortable tactical position. Only For Now (POST 7) at 4-1 for Clement with Franco gives the Clement barn another live runner on the card.

Longshots

Army Gal (POST 8) at 4-1 for Rice with Lezcano, as discussed, is the second Rice runner. Star Of Life (POST 2) at 8-1 for Casse with Saez draws some interest given the barn's form, but a 8-1 morning line reflects the competition here. Taqdeer (POST 10) at 6-1 for Jacobson with TBA has a TBA rider concern. One Last Knock (POST 1) at 4-1 for Brion with Carmouche from the rail is the pace horse that sets it up for others in most scenarios. Lil' Regard (POST 5) at 12-1 for Kantarmaci with Santana, Meg's Foxy Grey (POST 9) at 8-1 with TBA, Ratu Jawa (POST 4) at 15-1 for Seyler, and Edistrudis (POST 12) at 15-1 for Kantarmaci complete the longshot contingent.

Selections

Win: Boston's Phinest (POST 3) Place: Roman Grace (POST 11) Show: Sod Siren (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: At 1-1, Boston's Phinest (POST 3) is best used as a key in exactas and trifectas rather than a straight win bet unless bankroll management demands a safe play. Exacta: 3 over 11-6-7. Trifecta: 3 over 11-6 over 6-7-8-11.

Race 9 — Post 5:44 PM — 1980f | Dirt | Fillies and Mares | Fleet Indian Stakes | Purse $200,000

Pace Analysis

The Fleet Indian Stakes at 1980f on the main track is the featured race of the day and shapes up with a genuine pace battle developing in the early stages. Venetta (POST 3) is a prominent type who will want to be forwardly placed, and Iron Orchard (POST 4) from the Asmussen barn is another that projects near the front. Hot Currency (POST 2) with Franco and Power Of Women (POST 1) with Prat are also potential factors early. If Venetta (POST 3) and Iron Orchard (POST 4) hook up early, it sets the race perfectly for Unlock The Value (POST 8) from Chad Brown, who figures to come from behind.

Key Contenders

Venetta (POST 3) at 2-1 is the morning-line favorite from the Danny Gargan barn with Carmouche. Gargan is a smart conditioner who builds horses methodically, and a 2-1 price reflects genuine favorite status in a strong field. Venetta (POST 3) from post 3 gets a clean look at the early pace at a two-turn distance and Carmouche rides with precision in stakes company.

Iron Orchard (POST 4) at 3-1 for Asmussen with Ortiz is the other major contender. Asmussen's record in graded and non-graded stakes at major venues remains exceptional, and Ortiz aboard a potential pace presser in a two-turn route is a dangerous combination. Post 4 at 1980f is ideal.

Secondary Choices

Unlock The Value (POST 8) at 4-1 for Chad Brown with Dylan Davis is enormously interesting. Brown wins at a very high rate in stakes company at Saratoga, particularly with fillies and mares. DAVIS is riding the best racing of his Saratoga meet after multiple winners Wednesday, and Unlock The Value (POST 8) fits the profile of a well-spotted Brown late-running stakes horse to a tee. The outside post in a two-turn route is the concern.

Hot Currency (POST 2) at 4-1 for Linda Rice with Franco is another legitimate contender from an inside post. Rice enters two in this race and Hot Currency (POST 2) appears to be the marginally preferred entry.

Longshots

Power Of Women (POST 1) at 10-1 for Horacio De Paz with Prat — given Prat's current meet form, this 10-1 deserves consideration in exotics. The inside post at a two-turn route is difficult but Prat has saved ground on the rail successfully all summer. Lady Rose (POST 5) at 8-1 for Linda Rice with Lezcano is the second Rice entry. New York Special (POST 6) at 12-1 for Casse with Zayas has name appeal in the Spa market but opens at a big price. Victory Hall (POST 7) at 15-1 for Morley with Santana is a deep longshot.

Selections

Win: Venetta (POST 3) Place: Iron Orchard (POST 4) Show: Unlock The Value (POST 8)

Betting Strategy: This is the centerpiece exotic race of the day. Exacta: 3-4 box, with Unlock The Value (POST 8) and Power Of Women (POST 1) as alternates. Trifecta key: 3 and 4 over 3-4-8 over 8-2-5-1. For the Pick 4 (Races 9-12), starting with Venetta (POST 3) and Iron Orchard (POST 4) as the top options while spreading to Unlock The Value (POST 8) maximizes coverage.

Race 10 — Post 6:19 PM — 1870f | Inner Turf | Fillies and Mares | Maiden Special Weight | Purse $100,000

Pace Analysis

The final race is a 12-horse maiden special weight for fillies and mares at 1870f on the inner turf, and this has been flagged as the Best Bet of the day by multiple handicappers. The pace at this distance on the inner turf tends to be moderate to soft early, particularly in maiden company, which rewards horses with tactical speed that can sit within a length or two of the lead and pounce in the lane. Promise Me Amelody (POST 12) is the 2-1 morning line favorite and Felixyn (POST 2) is the 3-1 second choice. Zap That Ghost (POST 3) and Fifty Shades Free (POST 4) give trainer Jorge Abreu a two-pronged attack. The outside posts 10-12 carry disadvantage at the inner turf 1870f distance.

Key Contenders

Promise Me Amelody (POST 12) at 2-1 for Clement with Franco is the dominant morning-line choice from the outside post. Clement has trained multiple winners at the Saratoga meet this summer and his turf maiden fillies have been especially productive. The 12-post is a concern at the inner turf distance, but Franco's ability to find ground from wide draws is well-established. Multiple handicappers have identified this as the day's Best Bet, reflecting strong confidence in the Clement barn's preparation.

Felixyn (POST 2) at 3-1 for Thomas Morley with Dylan Davis draws a perfect inside post for the inner turf distance. With Davis in peak form this week and Felixyn (POST 2) drawing post 2 at 1870f on the inner turf, the tactical setup is extremely favorable. The Morley barn has had success placing horses in maiden spots at the Spa.

Secondary Choices

Zap That Ghost (POST 3) at 4-1 for Jorge Abreu with Ortiz draws the textbook inner turf post. Abreu has been quietly effective at the meet and ORTIZ from post 3 at a route distance on the inner turf is among the strongest combinations imaginable at this track. ABREU sending two runners — Zap That Ghost (POST 3) and Fifty Shades Free (POST 4) — suggests real confidence in the barn.

Amazing Gracer (POST 7) at 4-1 for Harold James Bond with Franco is interesting. Bond's maiden horses at Saratoga occasionally spring surprises at value prices and Franco riding here gives it legitimacy.

Longshots

Fifty Shades Free (POST 4) at 6-1 for Abreu with Prat is a powerful tactical combination from a favorable post. At 6-1 with Prat, this is genuinely dangerous. Ganderella (POST 1) at 5-1 for Terranova with Zayas has the rail, which can be workable in a maiden turf route if the horse breaks cleanly. Coach Of The Year (POST 8) at 4-1 for Weaver with Lezcano is another four-to-one option that draws a manageable middle post. Okay Annie (POST 9) at 8-1 for Duggan with TBA; the TBA rider is a concern. Suited Connectors (POST 10) at 4-1 for Clement with TBA is another Clement runner — again TBA rider raises a flag that must be resolved before wagering. Magic In My Eyes (POST 5) at 12-1 for Amelia Green with Santana is a deep longshot, and No Need To Panic (POST 6) at 20-1 for Miceli with Castellano having Castellano in the irons adds some intrigue at a long price. Little Finch (POST 11) at 20-1 for Bond with Zayas completes the field.

Selections

Win: Promise Me Amelody (POST 12) Place: Felixyn (POST 2) Show: Zap That Ghost (POST 3)

Betting Strategy: Despite the outside post, Promise Me Amelody (POST 12) is the Best Bet of the day and worth a win investment. Exacta: 12 over 2-3-4. The Abreu double of Zap That Ghost (POST 3) and Fifty Shades Free (POST 4) with Ortiz and Prat respectively makes a 3-4 exacta box worth considering as a separate wager. Trifecta: 12 over 2-3 over 3-4-7-8.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Flavien Prat enters Friday as arguably the hottest rider at the Saratoga meet. After back-to-back multi-winner performances including two winners Wednesday, Prat has the most sought-after book of any jockey at the Spa. Today he picks up mounts in Race 1 (CUGINO, POST 3), Race 2 (DR. KRAFT, POST 5), Race 3 (HYPNOTICA, POST 7), Race 4 (METATRON, POST 7), Race 5 (FIRE MARSHAL, POST 8), Race 6 (DOVES AND HAWKS, POST 6), Race 7 (SOLO VENTURI, POST 7), Race 9 (POWER OF WOMEN, POST 1), and Race 10 (FIFTY SHADES FREE, POST 4). The sheer volume of live mounts across the card is staggering and speaks to how trainers are responding to his current form.

Dylan Davis is also riding with exceptional confidence. His Wednesday multi-winner performance pushed him into the conversation for the Saratoga jockey title. Today he rides in Race 1 (CARSON'S RUN, POST 2), Race 2 (WHITTINGTON PARK, POST 3), Race 3 (EPIC SELLOFF, POST 6), Race 5 (GNOSIS, POST 5), Race 6 (BELISA, POST 5), Race 7 (URBAN PLANNER, POST 3), Race 9 (UNLOCK THE VALUE, POST 8), and Race 10 (FELIXYN, POST 2). The Race 9 mount aboard a Chad Brown fleet Indian contender is his most high-profile assignment.

Jose Ortiz is omnipresent as always, picking up key mounts for top barns throughout the card. His assignments on Island Town (POST 2) in Race 4, Tinian (POST 9) wait — that is Velazquez — and Render Judgment (POST 4) in Race 7 highlight his book. His dual listing in Race 6 on both Golden Siren (POST 3) and Margie's Girl (POST 16) for McPeek means one will require a jockey change — confirm before wagering.

John Velazquez's major news this week is that he will ride NAPOLEON SOLO in next Saturday's Travers Stakes. That announcement has boosted his profile at the meet. Friday he rides Capture The Flag (POST 4) in Race 1 and Tinian (POST 9) in Race 5, among other assignments.

Luis Saez appears in Race 4 (TARTABULL, POST 3) and Race 6 (ENCRYPTING, POST 4 and potentially BLUEGRASS PRINCESS, POST 10), with the dual Race 6 listing again requiring confirmation before wagering.

Kendrick Carmouche has the high-profile call on Venetta (POST 3) in the Fleet Indian Stakes and adds Nash Potatoes (POST 1) in Race 4 and Sherlock's Jewel (POST 5) in Race 7 to his book.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Chad Brown's presence is felt throughout the entire card. He runs Right To Vote (POST 5) in Race 1, Hypnotica (POST 7) and Romala (POST 1) in Race 3, Doves And Hawks (POST 6) and Superior Returns (POST 11) in Race 6, and Unlock The Value (POST 8) in the Fleet Indian. Brown's turf maiden fillies have been a particular strength this meet. When he doubles up in a maiden race (Race 3) and a large-field turf maiden (Race 6), the key is identifying which entry the barn prefers — Prat's mount is typically the signal.

Mark Casse is in tremendous form. The TDN feature this week highlighted his blockbuster summer with 10 wins and over $1.86 million in earnings. Friday he runs Golden Siren (POST 3) in Race 6, Tinian (POST 9) in Race 5, Star Of Life (POST 2) in Race 8, and New York Special (POST 6) in Race 9. The Race 6 runner is his most interesting wagering proposition given the morning line and jockey assignment.

Miguel Clement runs horses in Race 1 (CARSON'S RUN, POST 2), Race 3 (JADORLINIJA, POST 2 and MOONLIT, POST 3), Race 6 (BELISA, POST 5), Race 8 (ONLY FOR NOW, POST 7), and Race 10 (PROMISE ME AMELODY, POST 12 and SUITED CONNECTORS, POST 10). Clement's turf maiden fillies have been among the sharpest in training at the Spa, and his Race 10 favorite is the consensus Best Bet.

Ilkay Kantarmaci runs in Race 1, Race 2, and Race 8 with multiple entries. The barn's activity suggests targeting spots at specific claiming levels and conditions. KANTARMACI horses are often overlooked in the early morning line but can surprise when pace collapses.

Linda Rice has runners throughout the card, most notably Lady Rose (POST 5) and Hot Currency (POST 2) in Race 9, and Roman Grace (POST 11) in Race 8. Rice is excellent at placing horses in spots where they have tactical advantages, and her horses must always be taken seriously at Saratoga.

Jorge Abreu's dual entry in Race 10 — Zap That Ghost (POST 3) and Fifty Shades Free (POST 4) — with Ortiz and Prat respectively, suggests genuine confidence that at least one of the two is highly competitive. When a trainer deploys two of the meet's top jockeys in the same race, it commands attention.

Steve Asmussen's entries — Island Town (POST 2) in Race 4 and Iron Orchard (POST 4) in Race 9 — are both in targeted conditions that fit the horses' form profiles. Asmussen's record at major meets in route races with Jose Ortiz is among the best in North America.

Todd Pletcher runs Capture The Flag (POST 4) in Race 1 and Have Hope (POST 7) in Race 6. With the Travers dominating stable conversation, these are secondary assignments but Pletcher barns are rarely without purpose even at lower profile spots.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The Best Bet of the day is Promise Me Amelody (POST 12) in Race 10, confirmed by multiple handicappers. The outside post is the only concern on a horse that carries enormous barn confidence from the Clement operation. A straight win bet is justified at 2-1 given the quality of the signal.

The best value play of the card may be Hypnotica (POST 7) in Race 3 at 4-1. The Brown-Prat maiden combination at Saratoga is historically profitable, and getting 4-1 in a maiden race where two co-favorites at 2-1 split the betting public creates real return opportunity.

In Race 9, the Fleet Indian, Power Of Women (POST 1) at 10-1 with Prat from the inside post deserves exotic inclusion. Prat at 10-1 with Horacio De Paz in stakes company on the main track is a price that is likely too generous given current form.

For multi-race wagering, the Pick 4 covering Races 9 through 12 is the signature sequence. A suggested structure:

Race 9 (Fleet Indian): Venetta (POST 3), Iron Orchard (POST 4), Unlock The Value (POST 8) Race 10 (Maiden Turf): Promise Me Amelody (POST 12), Felixyn (POST 2), Zap That Ghost (POST 3) Race 11: Card not provided — use multiple runners Race 12: Card not provided — use multiple runners

A three-horse by three-horse opening leg on the Pick 4 creates nine tickets that should capture the result if the two top contenders in Races 9 and 10 finish.

For the early Pick 5 beginning in Race 1, the suggested structure is to single Cugino (POST 3) in Race 1, use Whittington Park (POST 3) and Dr. Kraft (POST 5) in Race 2, use Hypnotica (POST 7) and Jadorlinija (POST 2) in Race 3, single Island Town (POST 2) in Race 4, and spread to Tinian (POST 9), Fire Marshal (POST 8), and Good Aim (POST 2) in Race 5. This creates a manageable ticket with three singleable races and two spreading points.

The exacta of Venetta (POST 3) over Unlock The Value (POST 8) in the Fleet Indian is the single best exotic play on the card. If Venetta (POST 3) wires the field as the favorite and Brown's late runner finishes second, the price could be substantial given the public's tendency to key Iron Orchard (POST 4) underneath.

Regarding morning line analysis, the Race 6 maiden turf at 4:00 PM presents the most generous distributed odds on the card — with seven horses opening at 4-1 or lower in a 16-horse field, the public will face enormous difficulty identifying value. Golden Siren (POST 3) at 2-1 is the clear overlay play, and in a race where the chalk lands, the exactas and trifectas will return modest payoffs. The real opportunity is in the trifecta with Doves And Hawks (POST 6) and Energy Flows (POST 8) underneath if an overlay horse completes the board.

Final note: All TBA rider assignments should be confirmed at the track before any wagering on affected races. Multiple races today carry unassigned jockeys, most notably Over And Ollie (POST 7) in Race 1, Otello (POST 9) in Race 1, Ogugua (POST 10) in Race 5, several runners in Race 6, Okay Annie (POST 9) in Race 10, and Suited Connectors (POST 10) in Race 10. Jockey changes can significantly alter morning-line odds and pace dynamics.
