Future Stars Friday will put five $1 million-or-more prizes on the line at Keeneland, but the early betting story is concentrated around two Bob Baffert-trained juveniles. Hughes was installed at even money for the $2 million FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile, while Emphatic is the 9-5 choice in the $2 million Juvenile Fillies. The complete entry listings place both favorites in demanding 1 1/16-mile dirt races against fields that include several major fall-stakes winners. BloodHorse's entry tables list the post positions, riders, trainers and morning lines.
Hughes drew post five with Flavien Prat, a favorable middle slot for a horse whose price reflects considerable confidence from the market. He will face American History, the 9-2 second choice from post six for Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez, and Coach Pope, the 4-1 third choice breaking from post seven with Jose Ortiz. The race also contains Salahudin, another Baffert runner, at 6-1, creating a potentially important tactical question: whether Hughes gets an uncontested stalking trip or has to negotiate pace pressure from inside rivals.
Emphatic brings the strongest local storyline among Friday's dirt runners. Keeneland identifies the Brendan Walsh trainee as the winner of the Darley Alcibiades, making her one of the track's fall-meet stakes winners advancing to the championship. She drew post 10 and will have Tyler Gaffalione aboard, while Miss Monica, the 5-2 second choice for Baffert and Flavien Prat, starts from post five. Domain Expansion, at 6-1, gives the race another serious pace-and-position threat from post two. Keeneland's fall-meet review confirms Emphatic's Alcibiades route into the championship.
The turf races are considerably deeper on paper. The 5 1/2-furlong Juvenile Turf Sprint has 17 entries, with Libertango favored at 5-2 from post three and Brickyard Belle next at 3-1 from post four. Keeneland winner Adonius is also in the field after taking the Indian Summer, but his outside post 15 leaves John Velazquez with a more complicated trip to plot. In the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Sun Goddess is the clear 6-5 favorite for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore, with Amusingly at 7-2 and Domestic Agenda at 8-1 providing the principal American challenge.
The closing Brown Advisory Juvenile Turf may offer the day's most competitive betting puzzle. How's Al Today is the 3-1 favorite from post five, Folsom Blues is 7-2, and Great Barrier Reef is 4-1, but Agate arrives as a proven Keeneland winner after capturing the Castle & Key Bourbon. Agate's post 13 and 10-1 line temper the appeal, while Liam's Law, a graded-stakes winner bred in Florida, adds another live longshot for Jose Ortiz. Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association reporting identifies Liam's Law among the Florida-breds entered Friday.
The sequence begins with the Juvenile Turf Sprint at 2:55 p.m. Eastern and ends with the Juvenile Turf at 5:35, giving handicappers five sharply different tests of pace, ground and post position. The two dirt favorites have the clearest form-and-market support, but the oversized turf fields make trip handicapping essential: outside posts, traffic and the condition of Keeneland's turf course could matter as much as the morning line before the gates open.
